An interview with Dave Wyman

At the London game last year, one of my favorite moments was meeting former Seahawks linebacker Dave Wyman.

This week I had an opportunity to interview Dave following the release of his new book, titled ‘If These Walls Could Talk‘. There are some excellent stories and it’s great for Seahawks fans who want to relieve all the eventful moments in team history — many of which Dave has been part of as a player or member of the media.

I like listening to him on KIRO. He always has an intelligent take and is so relaxed about it.

    • Rob Staton

Dave’s a great bloke. Really appreciated his time both here and in London last year.

      • Troy

Great interview Rob, was interesting to hear more about that brutal leg injury he had and also hearing more inside knowledge relating to John Schneider among other subjects.

        • Rob Staton

Thanks Troy — and thanks for listening 🙂

  2. cha

I talked to him a little bit at the Seahawks draft party last year. Great guy, just fun to talk to and willing to just shoot the breeze with fans.

I’ll never forget the look on his face when the Hawks announced the player they’d traded up to get was a punter (Dickson). Hilarious.

    • Rob Staton

      Haha!

  3. TomLPDX

Great interview, just went and got the book. I love this kind of stuff…wouldn’t it be cool to sit and talk to Dave with a few beers and talk about anything. You nailed it Rob!

    • Rob Staton

Dave’s a top bloke, great to listen to his views today and he was very generous with his time. Thanks for listening Tom!

      • TomLPDX

Hey Rob, I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for giving us the seahawksdraftblog.com and the content that you consistently put out that is by far the best, probably for any football team’s fan base! The regulars here are knowledgeable (thanks to you!) and respectful of each other (again, thanks to you) and add so much more to your commentary. This is the only place I spend my time when it comes to serious Seahawk discussion. You keep it real and in perspective.

        Thank you!

        Tom Leavitt in Portland.

        • Rob Staton

Appreciate it Tom, those are really kind words. I give all credit to the community here. It’s a great group.

  4. Ashish

Nice Interview, next in line PC or JS. I’m pretty sure by now Seahawks coaching staff has heard about you and SDB. Good luck.

    • Rob Staton

That would be a dream. Maybe one day.

      • Sea Mode

I bet Jim Nagy would say yes…

BTW, folks, are we getting Rob to the Senior Bowl this year?

        • Gohawk5151

          Take my money!

  5. Jamho3

Fun interview, nice change of pace thanks.

  6. Paul Cook

I like DW a lot. I love his take on kickers. LOL

By the way, Rob, were you ever on the John Clayton Saturday morning radio show? Kind of foggy to me, and I’m fairly new to this site, but I thought maybe I heard you on it…maybe wrong…

Anyway…I love this site. Thank you for it.

    • Rob Staton

No I’ve not talked to JC. I’ve been on Softy’s show a few times and I did a piece with Dave in London last year.

  7. charlietheunicorn

Rob, have you thought about doing an interview with Tony Softli? He is pretty good. Some draft, some NFL and some behind the scenes of how an organization is run (scouting etc). Always enjoy listening to him. He always has some gems at what to watch for at the combine and how players are tested physically, mentally and how teams do background checks on guys or start looking at guys Freshman year sometimes.

    • Rob Staton

I would be interested for sure. I’ve never met Tony or talked to him so not sure how keen he’d be but I’d enjoy interviewing him.

      • charlietheunicorn

I’m not sure if Wyman knows him, but he might be a way to get a foot in the door.
I’m 100% certain Dave “Softy” Mauler knows him… has him on his show lately.
As they say, another “in” to getting in contact with him… heck, I think he has a twitter account…. but I stay way from the twitter… too much drama.

  8. Rob Staton

Poor from Jacob Eason again last night.

Hunter Bryant on the other hand… his stock just goes up and up.

  9. RWIII

Love listening to Wyman. Wyman has a way of telling a football story. Wyman thinks the Seahawks have the talent on defense.

In regards to the 49er game. If Seattle is going to win they cannot afford to turn the ball over. They just can’t do it. Turnovers where the key to the Saints/Ravens loses. The other key is the offensive line. If given the time Russell Wilson will find the open receiver. More importantly their OL needs to open holes for the Hawks running game. I have got the feeling that Rashaad Penny could break one. Kwon Alexander is gone for the season. Is it a coincidence that the 49er defense did not look the same w/o Alexander?

  10. RWIII

If I was Seattle I would bring in Fant and Dickson(if he can play) and I would run right at Dee Ford and Nick Bosa. Ford/Bosa knows how to rush the passer. Let’s see how good they are at defending the run.

Let me say this about Kyle Shanahan. Every one talks about Sean McVay as play caller. Well the Falcons offense has NOT been the same since Shanahan left Atlanta.

    • Rob Staton

Shanahan is legit and his teams always gash us for big yardage. We will give up some yards tomorrow. We will need a lucky turnover or two to balance that out.

Running at SF is the single best way to take steam out of their pass rush. It is a must to help dampen some of the pressure that will come from the DE’s.

    • Trevor

Agree completely about Shanahan one of the best if not the best offensive game planners and callers in the NFL.

  11. Sea Mode

    Ian Rapoport
    @RapSheet

The #Bears are waiving RB Mike Davis, one of their free agent signings this past spring, source said. They gave him $6M over 2 years, but cut him after just 11 carries in part because of how it helps them get a comp pick. He’ll be attractive on the waiver wire.

    Nov 9, 2019

    • Kingdome1976

Good luck to Mike. I’ve liked him since college and was hoping we could get him back in the fold but it doesn’t seem likely now.

    • Bigten

Does this affect our comp picks?

  12. Volume12

Seahawks scouts @ Florida St./BC and LSU/’Bama. Shockingly, not all 32 teams are at that last one. Not a bad player on the field.

    • Trevor

That Bama /LSU game is going to be awesome for talent evaluators. Probably 30+ NFL players on the field.

Both WR and DB groups are loaded so that will be must watch TV.

I am also anxious to see Klavon Chaisson today to see if he is someone to watch going forward. Raquan Davis as well. I would love to see Davis in a Hawks uni as out young version of Calias Campbell.

      • Volume12

Im excited to see ‘Bama S Xavier McKinney against Joe Burrows and his receivers. Grant Delpit is the better player, but McKinney has outplayed him this year.

‘Bama CB Patrick Surtain jr should be a top 10 pick in the 2021 draft.

Corners Trevon Diggs and Kristian Fulton are pretty equal. Diggs has the size and plays/locates the ball better. Fulton mirrors better.

I love ‘Bama OT Jedrick Willis. Has to get better with his UOH though.

  13. Volume12

Im old man. Antoine Winfield jr is now playing. I remember watching his dad and Nate Clements at Ohio St.

This Penn St./Minnesota game is gonna be fun. Row the boat!

    • Bigten

Winfield Jr. has been a stud all year, and had a big game today against penn state. I like his swagger. To bad he’s only a sophomore.

      • Volume12

        Agreed.

  14. Volume12

    I was just thinking.

Cam Newton would be such a great fit for Matt Nagy and the Chicago Bears.

    • Trevor

I was thinking the same thing. I bet that is where he ends up in 2020 or with the Titans

  15. Volume12

Florida St WR Tamorrion Terry (6’4, 205 lbs.) is such an efficient wideout. Just generates big play after play. Gonna make a team very happy on day 2.

5 catches, 124 yds, 1 TD in the 1st half today.

    • Volume12

Minnesota WR Tyler Johnson is gonna be such a stud. Love his game.

      • Trevor

I could see him as one of the Hawks Day 2 picks for sure.

  16. Volume12

BC RB AJ Dillon intrigues me for a few reasons.

At 240 pounds he put up a 135 SPARQ score in HS. At times that athleticism doesn’t seem to translate when the pads come on. Other times his contact balance is so good it doesn’t matter. Can be a bit of a plodder too.

Not many defenders are gonna want to tackle a 240-250 lber when November and December roll around.

Can he be a LaGarrette Blount? Cory Dillon? Or more along the lines of LenDale White?

With all that said, he might be one of the more enticing names on day 3.

    • Eli

This RB class is so deep, ton of guys that had big hype the last couple years could still be available on Day 3 – Dillon, Cam Akers, Zack Moss, Najee Harris.

      • Kingdome1976

Yeah, Najee Harris is my guy. If the Hawks picked him up in the 3-4 round I would be excited.

      • Sea Mode

Yeah, I was getting Kareem Hunt vibes checking out Zack Moss the other day. Not as good an athlete as the big names, so I don’t know how closely the Seahawks might look at him, but contact balance and toughness are outstanding and has a great feel for the way the blocking develops in front of him.

  17. Volume12

Florida St S/LB Hamsah Nasirildeen (6’4, 215 lbs.) is a discount Isaiah Simmons. 22 tackles today for him after he had 17 last week

His combine is a must watch for me.

  18. Sea Mode

    Yupee!

    Gregg Bell
    @gbellseattle

Pete Carroll says safety Quandre Diggs fully ready to play for first time for #Seahawks Monday night at 49ers. Won’t specify where.

    Nov 9, 2019

    • cha

Kittle didn’t practice today, and won’t play Monday unless something drastically changes.

  19. Volume12

Wait. LSU’s TE is the son of Randy Moss?!?

  20. Rob Staton

Been saying it a few weeks… Joe Burrow is the best QB eligible for 2020. What a performance so far.

    • Volume12

      Just looks comfortable.

How good is WR Jamarr Chase? Doing Trevon Diggs dirty. Has WR1 potential for next year written all over him.

    • DriveByPoster

Absolutely, Rob. But whether he likes it or not, he’s going to have to learn how to slide once he’s in the NFL, or it’ll be a very short career for him.

      • Rob Staton

Without doubt. He’ll need to slide. But if that’s the one thing he has to learn, sign me up. I’m glad no NFC West teams need a QB.

    • Trevor

He has been incredibly all season but that 1st half was sick. If he keeps it up in 2nd half he has to be the new Qb#1 in this draft class heading into the draft season right?

      • Rob Staton

He’s been my QB1 for weeks.

  21. cha

Good grief does Alabama not look ready for this game. They’re going to hear about it from Saban at halftime.

  22. Rob Staton

Tua has been massively overrated for two years. No idea where all this Tank for Tua stuff came from. All the Miami fans getting carried away were clearly desperate, willing him to be something he isn’t because they have no hope on the field.

Burrow is better in every single way.

    • clbradley17

Burrow is having a great day – 28 of 36 for 3 TDs, 0 int., 346 yds so far, late in 4th qtr. WR Smith of Bama looks fantastic too. Had 2 big grabs on a late drive with excellent CB Stingley of LSU all over him. Announcer mentioned that his teamate WR Jeudy said Smith has the best hands on the team.

  23. Paul Cook

You were pretty early on the Burrows bandwagon, and right you’ve been about him. He’s absolutely killing it again today in another big game.

    • Rob Staton

      He looks awesome.

  24. Volume12

These LSU WRs are on another level right now. Dusting some really good DBs. 2 of the 3 aren’t even draft eligible. Ridiculous.

  25. Paul Cook

As for Eason, he sure could use another year of snaps at the college level. As great of an arm as he has, I don’t see this guy being a productive NFL QB for a few years at best. And I’m a Husky homer. He’s still lacking from the leadership/decision making/making something happen standpoint. I suppose some team will take a chance on his talent fairly high in the draft, but from a growth and psyche standpoint, he just needs more time to develop it seems to me. Money will probably overrule such considerations, even though the money would be there in 2021 as well.

    • Rob Staton

Best case IMO is Eason needs seasoning and games. Worst case is he’s just an arm and you need more than that at the next level.

    • Volume12

If hes not that good than why stay? So the NFL can poke holes in his game?

He’s pressing. That whole team looks tight. Like someone sucked the fun outta the room/game for them?

      • Rob Staton

        You stay to improve.

It is possible to improve in college.

        Especially when you’ve barely played.

      • Paul Cook

A lot of that has to do with losing and expectations. They’ve lost every big game, and they’ve lost three games at home. They’re hearing it from all sides now. Even Chris Petersen, an all but unassailable head coach, is being questioned about his lack of wining the big game, his almost mind-boggling poor clock and game management in the clutch, and his perceived failure to get the best talent on the field at all times. It’s just been a bad year all the way around, and that takes toll on everyone.

On the positive side, this was actually thought to be a bit of a step-back year for the Huskies. They lost nine defensive starters, they were weak from a WR standpoint if they didn’t play the youngsters, and, due to injuries and transfers and an off recruiting year, they were weak in the LB department. Husky fans thought that Eason could compensate for these potential shortages, along with a vet OL and a strong running game. It didn’t happen like us Husky fans hoped.

But our recruiting is strong this year and has been the last two years. It’s actually not as dire as some Husky fans think now. We could rebound nicely, and things could be tra-la-tra-la again.

  26. Paul Cook

I love how Burrows gets hit, loses the ball, but immediately and aggressively makes the tackle after the recovery. Great presence of mind.

    • Rob Staton

That has to go down as a fumble too. McKinney with a FF on the blitz. Poor blocking by LSU. Nothing Burrow could do there. That’s not a pick.

  27. Bigten

This Edwards-Helaire kid is pretty impressive.
Doesn’t meet the size PC/JS like but is very elusive.

    • CHawk Talker Eric

His last TD run was beastmode

      • CHawk Talker Eric

        I’m sayin’

He just dragged most of Bama’s interior defense for a first down

    • Volume12

Versatile skill set, runs like a grown man, has some shiftiness to his game, refuses to go down, plays much bigger than his size? IMO he cheks alot of their boxes.

    • clbradley17

RB Edwards-Helaire does look very good, and really happy I turned on this game a short time ago, thought it was a night game. Gotta love how you see the emotion from him on the sidelines after he scored what appears to be the winning TD with 90+ seconds left. What a huge play by Burrows on that 18 yard run that extended the last drive that RB Edwards-Helaire scored on.

But then Tua throws a TD for Alabama to WR Smith on the first play of the next drive. LSU recovers the onside kick and wins the game 46-41. USC was inept not to retain interim coach Orgeron after he turned them around a few years ago, let him get away to LSU. .

  28. Denver Hawker

Went to CU/Stanford game. Parkinson is impressive- big tough target, good hands. Blocking against backs and linebackers with ease. Adebo wasn’t that special. Shinault is so quick for his size, drops his shoulder and is tough to bring down- such a unique talent.

  29. Trevor

And the Heisman goes to Joe Burrow in a a landslide . What a performance today. Everytime Bama made a run he came right back and responded with a TD Drive.

  30. Volume12

Boy this one looked different. Anybody have these 2 teams combining for 87 points?

    • Von

I was texting w/ my brother before they. I said 48-48 and it goes to overtime.

  31. Ben Ft. Worth

Joe Burrow deserves the Heisman!!! Just give it to him!!!

  32. Ishmael

Ed Ogeron sounds like he’s about to cut a promo, love it. Great game.

    • Volume12

Cajun Fred Flintstone is a great gimmick

    • CHawk Talker Eric

Trojans nation are crying their eyes out. They never should’ve let him go. But I guess Clay Helton seemed better?

  33. Volume12

Grant Delpit has a big issue. Still a great player, but he can’t tackle. Thought McKinney outplayed him.

    • Trevor

I thought there was no chance the Hawks would have a shot at Delpit or McKinney. Now I am not so sure both won’t be there in the middle of Rd#1.

Either would look good in a Hawks uni but I prefer Delpit still.

      • Ben Ft. Worth

I’d die if we got Delpit!!! Omgosh!! What a dream come true….but sadly I dont think our Hawks have a shot.

      • Volume12

Keep an eye on Florida St’s Hamsah Nasirildeen.

        • Trevor

I really like him foo Vol.

Seems like every year there is an FSU defensive guy we seem to like more than most and I think this year he is that guy. I bet he tests well and will be bigger than expected at the combine.

    • CHawk Talker Eric

Whoa. Jonathan Taylor steamrolled Iowa for 250 rushing yards 👀

    • Rob Staton

McKinney just blitzed all game and his open-field tackling is poor.

Outplayed? Sure, if one safety just acts as an extra rusher all game and the other actually plays some coverage.

  34. Trevor

Is DeVonta Smith the best Bama WR. All three go in top 40 I think but wow Smith gets easy seperation. Would be hard to argue with Robs mock with the Hawks taking him after watching him today wow. Locket, Metcalf and Smith would be special.

The LSU wideouts are so good too. Still have to see how they run but this looks like the best WR class in years if not ever.

    • CHawk Talker Eric

Been saying for a while I think Smith has the potential to be the best pro of the 3 Bama WRs

      https://seahawksdraftblog.com/2020-nfl-mock-draft-2#comment-455331

    • Volume12

K’Lavon Chaisson came to play today Trev. For awhile there, LSU didnt have an answer for him up front.

      • Trevor

I am really anxious to see how he tests. He looks the part for sure.

  35. Paul Cook

What a great game to watch. So much talent and enthusiasm. Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, and LSU sure seem like a cut above everyone else. Burrows…I’m sold. Wouldn’t surprise me if he goes #1.

  36. CaptainJack

PJ Fleck and the Golden Gophers are for real?

  37. charlietheunicorn

With all the talk about Burrows, which NFL team would be a perfect fit for him?

I keep thinking the Jaguars are a team needing to upgrade the QB position… and they will be picking in the top half of the 1st round. Could he be a guy that could/would work with John Gruden and the LV Raiders? Bengals (if they trade Dalton for some other picks)?

    • Justin Mullikin

The NFL team that picks #1. I would take him above all the other QBs. There is something special about him.

      • Paul Cook

If I had to make a guess about those who might be the horniest for Burrows…I would say the Broncos, Bengals, and the Bears.

        But what do I know…

        • charlietheunicorn

How about the Atlanta Falcons? They are in a top 3-4 pick position currently.
I would suggest trading Ryan while they can. They need some cap relief and draft capitol to start rebuilding the team after the HC gets the “inevitable” boot at the end of the year.

        • Rob Staton

Chargers or Titans for me. Go and get him.

          • CHawk Talker Eric

Chargers make a lot of sense. Rivers is a decent comp for Burrows.

            • Paul Cook

The reason why I mentioned the Bears, Broncos, and Bengals was as follows…

              1) The Bears have been searching for a QB since Sid Luckman

              2) Elway, one of the greatest QB’s of all time…wants another franchise QB

              3) The Bengals, like the Bears with Trubinski, realize that Dalton isn’t the answer

We all know that if you don’t have a true franchise QB, your odds of taking it to the house diminish severely.

              It’s all in fun…

  38. Paul Cook

Tua is a very good QB prospect. I’d chance him if I was a GM picking 2-6 ish. But Rob is right about something. He’s VERY mechanical in his passing delivery. Kind of like the anti-Aaron Rodgers in this way.

  39. Paul Cook

This Hawks 49ers game is a big one. Put simply, a friend of mine is organizing a big dinner party for the game. It’s got a buzz to it out here in Seattle. People/fans are really into this one.

  40. Paul Cook

My baby is an Oklahoma girl. So Oklahoma is my 2nd string college team.

CD may be the best of recent OK WR’s. And that’s saying a lot. Sterling, Marquis, etc… This guy’s got game. NFL? You never know. But someone will take a chance on him and pick him pretty high.
