CFB week 2: Joe Burrow & LSU impress vs Texas

— LSU beat Texas in a highly entertaining contest, punctuated by the performance of Tigers quarterback Joe Burrow. He was a surgeon in the second half, ending with 31/39 passing for 471 yards and four touchdowns. For years LSU were let down by poor quarterback play. This year it could be one of their key strengths. Burrow really looked the part as he sliced Texas open. Every time the Longhorns scored, Burrow would immediately answer. He looked like a pro in this game. If he can keep it going, he’ll end up on the NFL radar.

— LSU cornerback Kristian Fulton is well sized and does a great job tracking the ball in the air. There was further evidence of that in this game. He’s not a face-guarder and he regularly gets his head around to locate the ball in the air. Fulton was beat on an early touchdown. On the previous play he’d judged the throw to perfection — leaping to make a PBU on a shot to the right sideline. Texas went with the exact same call on the next play and Fulton didn’t get deep enough in his drop before leaping for the ball — leaving the receiver wide open to make a catch and run. It’s not overly concerning though. Fulton shows the traits to cross over to the next level — sticky in coverage downfield and on shorter routes. He can kick inside to the nickel. He’s physical and tracks the ball well. The occasional minor error can be rectified by scheme and coaching. The reality is — in Seattle’s scheme he’d never be asked to be in the position he was to get beat on the Texas TD. He’s a promising player within a good looking 2020 cornerback class.

— Jabari Zuniga (DE, Florida) was a player we talked a lot about last season as a possible Seahawks pick. He’s off to a flying start this season. His display against UT Martin on Saturday takes him to 3 sacks and 4.5 TFL’s in just two games. He’s a complete defender and is already taking over the Jachai Polite role as Florida’s main pass-rush threat. Another top pass rusher, Penn State’s Yetur Gross-Matos, gained half a sack in a big win against Buffalo. South Carolina’s possible first round defensive tackle, Javon Kinlaw, has sacks in back-to-back games to start the season. He had a TFL too in a blowout win vs Charleston.

— I need to watch more of Kenny Willekes (DE, Michigan State). He’s a difficult projection. Will his production translate? How good is he as an athlete? On tape it’s very easy to appreciate his effort and quickness. He’s been a playmaking machine for a while. He’s continued to produce this season despite suffering a bad injury a few months ago. Willekes had two sacks and two TFL’s against Western Michigan.

— For the last few years, Clemson’s defense has made the NFL draft headlines. This year the top prospects are on offense. Receiver Tee Higgins and running back Travis Etienne have immense talent and that showed again against Texas A&M. Higgins is such a fluid, natural receiver. Clemson do a tremendous job coaching up technically and physically gifted receivers. Etienne is a threat as a runner or receiver with an excellent lower-body base to create explosive power and quickness. Both could easily go in round one.

— Coming into the season I spent some time talking about Eno Benjamin (RB, Arizona State). He’s a powerful, gritty running back but he needed to show a bit more in the passing game. Against Sacramento State he had four catches for 94 yards and a touchdown to go with 69 yards rushing. He’s talented and fun to watch.

Last season we highlighted Maryland running back Anthony McFarland as one to watch. He’s diminutive but fast and explosive. Against Syracuse he had 75 rushing yards on 14 carries and two catches for 45 yards. He added three total touchdowns. He’s a playmaker and someone to monitor this season.

— Alabama were never likely to be threatened by New Mexico State but Tua Tagovailoa confirmed his credentials as the front-runner to go #1 overall next year. He was accurate, comfortable and he’s made a terrific start to the season. He scored four touchdowns in the game before taking a seat. Jerry Jeudy scored three touchdowns and had 103 yards on eight catches. It’s very possible Jeudy lands in the top-10 in 2020. Raekwon Davis recorded a TFL in an easy 62-10 win. Alabama always wait a few weeks to play anyone worthwhile.

— Derrick Brown (DT, Auburn) didn’t have a great start against Oregon last week. He collected a TFL in a modest win against Tulane. Ohio State’s Chase Young had 1.5 sacks and 1.5 TFL’s against Cincinnati. Running back J.K. Dobbins — a SPARQ freak who led the Nike event in 2016 with a 146.76 score — is off to a great start this season and had 141 yards on 17 carries plus two touchdowns. Ohio State’s offense will be tough to stop this year and Georgia transfer Justin Fields is fitting in very well at quarterback (although it’s a scheme that is very kind to QB’s).

— I’ve been a fan of Steven Montez (QB, Colorado) for a long time. He’s underrated. He led his team on a fantastic second-half comeback to beat Nebraska in overtime. That included a 96-yard touchdown on a flea-flicker and a superb corner-of-the-end-zone throw with seconds left to tie the game. Montez can be streaky at times but he’s big, mobile and has a terrific arm. Laviska Shenault was quiet again. He had five receptions for 31 yards and three runs for six yards. I said last week he didn’t look anywhere near his best. Is there an issue?

— We highlighted Rondale Moore (WR, Purdue) as a player to watch at the end of last season and I want to try and see more as the weeks go on. Against Vanderbilt he had 13 catches for 220 yards and a touchdown. Purdue won a key game 42-24.

    SEAHAWKS FOOTBALL TODAY!!!

Rondale Moore is something else, but he won’t be draft eligible until 2021, right? 114rec/1258yds/12TD as a true freshman is impressive.

Also, in case anyone thinks there’s no elite athleticism behind those numbers, this is from Feldman’s Freaks:

    17. Rondale Moore, Purdue, wide receiver-kick returner

Last year, he took the Big Ten by storm and provided a huge boost to the Boilers’ resurgence. He was third in the country with 13 plays of 30 yards or longer. The 5-8 Moore earned his Freak status last summer before ever playing a game at Purdue when he squatted 600 pounds despite weighing only 174 pounds. Moore has added about 10 pounds this off-season, according to Purdue strength coach Justin Lovett, who describes the sophomore as a rare talent.

“We wear Catapult (Athlete GPS Tech) like most teams. What we found is that Rondale will hit a minimum of 21 mph every time he steps foot on the field, regardless of designed practice tempo,” Lovett says. “Rondale also routinely doubles the volume of the next closest player. This means he is running faster than everyone else while doubling up on reps. He is full speed all the time. His practice load would be higher than most game loads we typically see. His game loads blew us away when we saw them for the first time. We have been forced to keep a pitch count on him so to speak just to keep him within acceptable practice and training volume ranges.”

    How special is Moore?

“I was in Denver with the Broncos, then at UGA with Todd Gurley, two of our assistant strength coaches spent time in NFL and got Super Bowl rings,” Lovett says. “Collectively, we had NEVER seen ANYONE like Rondale from an athleticism standpoint before he showed up! When we asked to measure his height on his official visit he said, ‘How tall is fast?’ I figured right then that we might be in for a ride!”

      Yep my mistake.

Certainly doesn’t change the fact though that the 2020 WR class is likely to be loaded. Strange that the Seahawks drafted 3 WRs this year knowing that? Or is it just another case of “take your guys whenever they are there for the taking”?

V12 just mentioned Ok. St. junior WR Tylan Wallace. I’m a fan as well.

Deep ball hands catcher is what I like. Play at 3:15 shows a lot to like: tracking, adjustment, high-point, hands, balance, coordination. Love it.

And the release and holding on at 2:45 is impressive as well.

It’s possible that @HuskerFBNation CB Lamar Jackson (@theroyal_21) is the longest and best-looking corner in the 2020 draft. He’ll be a three-year starter and coaches like his confidence now. Jackson is getting drafted but how high? Ascending player. #TheDraftStartsInMOBILE

    10:35 PM · Sep 7, 2019

All I can say is that he’s sure got a lot of “ascending” left to do as a senior this year if he wants to interest the Seahawks at all. Sure, his frame looks great listed at 6-3, 215 and long arms, but he shies away from contact and gives up on plays in a very frustrating way. Gets washed out of plays by the tiniest of WRs. Can’t tackle worth beans.

    Cue circus music:

Unless something radical changes this year, it’s a “no” from me. (Help me out if I’m missing something here…)

    Chris Mortensen
    @mortreport

Agent Drew Rosenhaus says there was a “robust” market for Antonio Brown once Raiders released. A few teams confirmed “interest” or “consideration” only to get a sense Saturday morning that Brown and Patriots were a “fait accompli”

Among those teams were the Browns and Seahawks, whose QB @DangeRussWilson enjoyed working with
@AB84when they were with respective teams. Common theme: Steelers. The Seahawks at Pittsburgh next week. Browns in same AFC North division

(Meant when Wilson and Brown were working in SoCal when they weren’t with respective teams.)

Brown also sought out advice from social media consultants for ideas on how he accelerate his release with Raiders. The first blow was posting the letter from Mike Mayock informing him of fines that included “conduct detriment,” which led to the next day confrontation.

I was busy yesterday so I know I’m late to this…

But AB to the Pats makes me sick.

  7. Volume12

I really like Kristian Fulton too. A lot of physicality to his game and he seems like a good fit in a zone heavy scheme.

Same with Kenny Wilekes. One of my favorite CFB players, but does he have the length and can his perceived lack of athleticism translate?

  8. Volume12

Oh man. If Seattle’s pass rush doesn’t eat today against this Cincy O-line thats a problem. Looking at this starting unit of theirs and other than Miami it’s gotta be the worst in the league.

Can not wait for Ryan Finlay to be their starting QB sometime this season and Cincy just goes from Andy Dalton to Andy Dalton: NEXT

  9. Volume12

It’s time to admit that Josh ‘tall, white QB so he’s good according to scouts’ Allen is not in fact good. 2 picks in the 1st quarter.

Meanwhile, Lamar ‘will probably have to switch to WR in the NFL’ Jsckson is 7-7, 140 yds, and 3 teeders .

    • Rob Staton

I can live without this on here to be honest. Leave that for twitter.

Josh Allen, physically, was a prototype. Hand size, height, arm strength, mobility. That’s why he went early. Rightly or wrongly. It had nothing to do with the fact he is white.

Lamar Jackson has a lot to prove he’s a legit starter. I liked him in college and wrote about him often. But he’s playing a team that could easily go 0-16. Let’s just admit that.

      • Volume12

Yes Rob. The Dolphins are bad. Like should be relegated bad.

Can we also admit that Jackson being 9-9, 204 yds, and 4 TDs is an amazing performance for a guy who couldn’t throw, regardless of opponent?

        • Rob Staton

But who actually said he couldn’t throw?

I never heard anyone say he couldn’t throw. Maybe someone did. Consensus was he’s a very capable QB and he went in R1.

And is it an amazing performance? He and the Ravens are whipping a truly hopeless Miami. To me it feels like a hollow victory for Baltimore and it’s hard to get anything out of that first half.

          • Volume12

If they thought he could make all the throws, I would suspect multiple sources wouldn’t have said he might have to make a move to wideout.

            Lance Zierlein springs to mind.

            – flips it rather than throws it
            – sails throws
            – underthrows deep ball
            – throws with too much of a narrow base

There were a lot of others who said he way too inaccurate. Bill Polian i.e.

For me it is an amazing performance when you complete 90% of your passes. I don’t care if it’s against the Dolphins or not.

            • Rob Staton

So Lance Zierlein had some negatives (and he writes pro’s and con’s for every prospect) and you’ve mentioned Bill Polian.

Loads of people liked Lamar Jackson. It’s simply false that loads of people were knocking his ability to throw or that there were any ‘racist’ overtones that led to him being drafted ‘only’ in the late first round rather than much higher.

I wish we could just enjoy football without all this stuff.

  10. Rob Staton

    Atlanta look soft.

Miami look like a bad college team.

Washington are proving today’s game isn’t a gimme for Seattle.

    • Del tre

Panthers look sloppy too, I think a lot of the NFL pundits have overestimated how good a lot of teams are going to be. That being said if the Panthers weren’t handing the Rams opportunity after opportunity the game might still be 0-0.

      • Rob Staton

Panthers look exactly like they did at the end of last season — awful.

        • Rob Staton

Also — Rams aren’t going away any time soon. Seattle needs to win games against them to have any shot to retake the NFC West.

        • Group captain mandrake

I know that teams can’t have multiple helmets, but would it be a different situation for a throwback uniform because it’s basically a one time thing?

When are we gonna have throwback jersey night?

          • Rob Staton

Probably never unless the NFL changes it’s rules on multiple helmets.

Seattle’s navy blue would just look… odd… with the throwbacks.

They’d make a killing on merch though if they got Nike to design a modern version of the throwbacks.

For the purposes of this party our biggest free agents all walk and Seattle doesn’t trade picks (which won’t happen but neither will this).

Rd 1, Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa
Rd 2, Curtis Weaver, DE, Boise State
Rd 2, Levi Onwuzurike, DT, Washington
Rd 3, Kylin Hill*, RB, Mississippi State
Rd 4-7, Shotgun method on DBs, TEs & Jon Runyan for name’s sake

It’ll be an interesting setup with 3 of our FAs as potential market setter-ish types at their respective positions in Clowney, Ifedi & Reed. Add in the inflated cost of any okayish OL & Fant could be looking at a big payday.

Here’s to a F-U-N 2019 Seahawks season filled with healthy players!

    • Group captain mandrake

This is my biggest fear with Ziggy. Super talent but always injured. Hopefully it’s just a precaution.

    • Coug1990

This is what I am thinking. The Seahawks have usually waited an extra week for players coming off an injury. Since he has come back sooner than most believed he would, this is probably a good idea. Need him for the entire season.

    Go deep!

  21. CHawk Talker Eric

I’ve seen that play that resulted in Wilson’s sack. It’s in 12 personnel. A play action right where the OZl block down right. The LT crashes down on the DT, the TE on the left engaged the DE, while the LG pulls behind the LT to pick up the TE who releases and catches the pass. It worked brilliantly vs MIN in the preseason. But here, Pocic misses his assignment, gets caught up with Brown and can’t get back to pick the the DE that Dissly initially engaged before releasing to catch the pass.

    • CHawk Talker Eric

Ugh. The horrors of posting on a phone

How are all our guys slipping on our own brand new turf?

    • Rob Staton

It was happening vs Oakland too.

  24. Rob Staton

Really struggling to understand our plays. We seemed to call a TE screen but Wilson either got spooked or there was a breakdown. Some of our PA stuff looks like we’re setting up for a screen but there’s nobody there as the pass option.

Just run the ball. It’s what we’re built to do.

    • Sea Mode

I do think CIN is selling out to stop the run.

Carson was open on that cross field route. RW just gotta start taking what’s there and build some rhythm.

    • CHawk Talker Eric

I did such a poor job of describing it but Pocic missed his assignment which was to pull behind Brown and pick up the DE (Dunlap?) when Dissly releases to the flat for the screen pass. Not sure why but it looked like Pocic pulled late and Brown crashed quickly, the net effect of which was a collision that prevented Pocic from executing his pull block.

      • CHawk Talker Eric

I need to see the replay to be sure but the more I think about it the more I think Pocic turned the wrong way. Instead of rolling to his right and pulling behind Brown, he turned left into Brown. At least that’s what I remember. Also Dunlap was really quick to Wilson after Dissly released.

  25. CHawk Talker Eric

Taking nothing away from QJeff, but Clowney made that sack happen. He’s been phenomenal so far.

  27. CHawk Talker Eric

I hate commenting during the game, it’s usually just knee jerk reaction stuff, but I just can’t understand why PCJS thought sticking with TT was a better choice than signing Tre Boston on the cheap. At least give Hill a shot.

  44. Sea Mode

Hopefully coaches collected enough info on CIN so as to make adjustments and clamp it down in the 2nd half…

    • Sea Mode

      Uggghhh

      • Volume12

Maddening as it is, this is a wild a** game.

        • Sea Mode

          Oh, totally.

We really needed that break of a missed FG.

          • Volume12

Badly needed that. This O-line is just getting overwhelmed.

  45. Hilyard Row

Seahawks offense SUCKS. What is going on?

    • Rob Staton

Cincy, in fairness, have come up with a game plan to nullify everything we like to do.

Got to find a counter punch. It’s unnerving that they didn’t have something on that second drive.

    • Sea Mode

Duane Brown got beat on 1st down.
      Carson slipped on 2nd down.
And it’s 3rd and forever again.

      That’s what’s going on.

  46. Troy

Our pass pro has devolved to worst in league levels, this is hard to watch

  47. WALL UP

This is a good punch in the mouth that will humble the entire team. Coaches as well

  48. Sea Mode

Shaqill showing up for a couple plays.

  49. Volume12

That big 73 is a stud man.

    • Volume12

      * 72

  50. Aaron

So I think Solari may just ask his guys to come in for a few more meetings this coming week…just a hunch.

  51. CHawk Talker Eric

That was a Ricky tacky hold call on Ifedi. I’ve seen way worse go uncalled.

  52. Volume12

Look at that! Good pass pro and we get an explosive teeder.

    All Lockett does is…???

    • Sea Mode

PC: nah, we was just toyin’ with you, Cinci… we’ve actually got this guy named Tyler Lockett…

  53. UkAlex6674

Just keep positive. It looks a bit rough but it’s week one. I recall the same v Denver last year. That season worked out pretty good. The playoffs are in January not September. GO HAWKS!

  54. Volume12

IDK what happened to C-Dog, but his guy QJeff is ballin’!

  55. Volume12

    Flowers is getting f***ing roasted!

    • Volume12

TBF, that was a good play by Flowers IMO

      • Sea Mode

        really harsh call

        • Del tre

Well, on the bright side Shaq is looking like a bonafide #1 this game

  56. Volume12

When did Pocic become the Hawks best O-lineman?

  57. Sea Mode

Dang, my heart stopped for a sec when Carson came to a stand-still behind the OL there…

  58. Volume12

Green with possibly the biggest play of his career. 🤞

    • Volume12

      Ball game!

      • Sea Mode

        Well that wasn’t close at all… 😉

    • Sea Mode

And QJeff with the greatest game of his career.

      • Volume12

        God he was awesome today.

Look. It was an ugly, but a W is a W and with Seattle being at Pitt next week in a 10 AM and N.O. at the CLink week 3 this was a must win.

        • Sea Mode

Absolutely. Would have been nice had the Rams dropped the game to CAR, but oh well.

      • cha

Has Q arrived? That was fun to watch.

  59. Sea Mode

Great start for DK as well.

Looks like Dissly (knee), Poona (calf), and Thorpe (hamstring) were the only injuries. Hopefully nothing serious.

    • Milwaukee hawk

Makes me nervous it’s the same knee Dissly tore his patellar tendon on

      • Sea Mode

Yeah, not good at all. But Twitter reported he was walking around unattended on the sideline afterwards, so hopefully just a scare.

  60. Sea Mode

Anyone get a clip of that snap where Al Woods absolutely obliterated his blocker?

    • Sea Mode

(CIN was lucky their run play was called to the left and not towards him!)

    • Sea Mode

INT (or fumble recovery, whatever), 4th down stuff, drawing holding penalties, and a huge pancake: I say give that big man the game ball to share with QJeff!
