CFB week 2 open thread

On my schedule today I’ve got Mississippi State vs Kansas State, Arkansas State vs Alabama and Clemson vs Texas A&M. My focus will be on the defensive linemen. Whatever happens this year, the Seahawks stand to be in the market for D-line help in the off-season. They could even double dip (first round pick plus a free agent, such as Jadeveon Clowney who absolutely destroyed Seattle in 2017).

If you’re watching a game, tell us about it in the comments section. Especially if a future draft prospect stands out.

EDIT — The Alabama game was out of hand early, so I switched to Nebraska vs Colorado. Steven Montez, the Colorado quarterback, looks like the real deal. Very, very impressed. Keep an eye on this guy. Ditto middle linebacker Nate Landman.

I’m really liking this Alabama defense. Especially Raekwon Davis and Deionte Thompson. Those 2 have a Seahawky feel to them IMO. I also like Devin a white out of LSU. That man flies around the field and brings the heat.

    • Volume12

      I agree.

Dionte Thompson is the real deal. ‘Bama hasn’t run the single high safety look in years. Speaks to his talent. He’s got the hardest thing to find in DB’s. Playmaking ability. He’s a guy that could stay at safety or make a move to corner. I got a feeling he’ll work his way into the top half of round 1 if he declares and stays healthy.

Dontae Johnson put on IR & Hawks bring up Akeem King from the practice squad.

    Tough blow.

Someone remind me – if Maxwell is healthy the Hawks can bring him back after the injury settlement after a period of time. I think it’s 3 weeks?

    • Rob Staton

      Yep

    • Volume12

Did Johnson really show more than Flowers?

      • Eburgz

I liked the way king played in preseason for the most part. Didn’t notice anything from Johnson and flowers looks promising but wasn’t very sticky in coverage. I was more bummed about losing fluker for the week than Johnson for the year.

        • STTBM

King was beaten badly more than once in each game. He also committed Carrols Cardinal Sin–allowing the WR to get behind him. He is clearly behind Flowers Johnson and Thorpe. Not good for Seattles chances at Mile High to be already down to their third CB.

DeShawn Shead is sitting out there now and after Sunday, he can be signed without guaranteed $s.

I kinda think it’s a pretty good likelihood Seattle will be on the look for some more veteran depth after Sunday.

    • Hawktalker#1

That is a good thought. It seems Seattle made a decision somewhere along the line that they were going to move on without him. Could have been just a value assessment at that moment in time as he was signed somewhere else as a FA. But thing are different now for Seattle and Shead. Might not be the worst idea and I always thought he played pretty well. It was Lane that I always had an issue with. Would probably be smart to pick him or another experienced CB up soon. We are too thin and experienced atm and it’s very concerning. If I’m a Seahawks opponent, I really go hard after whoever the CB is opposite Griffin. Not good for the Hawks.

What are the best options out there right now?

Lag check. Posted this at 11:53PST

      • Hawktalker#1

Interesting discovery on the lag issue. I normally use safari on an iPad, but just opened chrome on my iPad where I almost never read from SDB, went to SDB on Chrome and all the 11 threads that were showing available all displayed including my very very recent post.

However, after I made a post on Chrome and reloaded the site, it reverted back to a state where This thread showed me there were supposed to be 11 posts, but it would only display 4-5 of them. Couldn’t get past that until I deleted my browsing history, then I could see all the posts again. There has to be something related to browsing history or cookies that is preventing all the posts from being displayed and I bet that is what is causing what we believe to be the posting lag.

I have just started using another device after I post anything. Everytime I refresh the page with the device I used for my post nothing to very little changes. While I can refresh the page at the same time with another device and get updates. Luckily I have a separate phone for work.

          • Rob Staton

A quick reminder to everyone that I’m trying to find a resolution to this.

      • Sea Mode

Ha, we posted at exactly the same time. How long did it take yours to appear? I didn’t check the time on mine.

    • Sea Mode

      Good call.

  4. Volume12

Miss St’s Kylin Hill is a playmaker folks.

    • Tecmo Bowl

Yeah he is! That OL is looking good too.

Simmons is a baller. Someone will get a bargain with his baggage dropping him down the board.

      • Volume12

He’s a monster. Both on and off the field. lol

  5. AlaskaHawk

What are the chances of the NFL increasing practice squad sizes? It seems like it would be a win win situation to develop more players.

    • Hawktalker#1

I’d like to see them have a larger PS and pay them more as well. Let making a team’s PS have more general and financial value to those players.

      • Comfect

It would be kind of cool if they had a PS that was actually large enough to practice on its own.

    • JimQ

I’d like to see: Practice squad = 12 players, 2 or which can not be poached by other teams, this would limit the obvious use of “innovative” ways that teams currently use (ghost roster, etc). Also, why do they have players on the 53 man roster but only get to suit up a fewer # of players? That would seem counter-productive to me especially with injuries occurring so frequently.

  6. Tecmo Bowl

Arizona has to be happy they signed Sumlin for 5 years/$14.5m. Funny thing is he’s the highest paid coach in college football $12.4m this year. $10.4m buyout from A&M+ $2m salary. Sometimes it literally pays to do a poor job. Insane. Wonder how much Zona will pay him to not coach their team in the future.

Yet the NCAA refuses to pay the players.

    • Hawktalker#1

I heard we’re still not paying HS players either. A shame. 🙂

  7. Volume12

This 2020 RB class is gonna be crazy.

Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor, BC’s AJ Dillon, Miss St’s Kylin Hill, Ohio St’s JK Dobbins, Florida St’s Cam Akers, ‘Bama’s Najee Harris, Georgia’s D’Andre Swift, Clemson’s Travis Etienne to name a few

    • CHawk Talker Eric

Watching Georgia-SouthCar and I agree about Swift. In fact, I’m impressed with all of Georgia’s skill positions, particularly their WRs. Hardman has some sneaky speed, Ridley and Simmons are excellent downfield blockers.

      Strong offense for sure.

I’d like to focus on their D but the Gamecocks just haven’t been able to stay on the field 🤷🏻‍♂️

      • Volume12

Ridley is one of the more underrated wideouts in the country.

        D’Andre Walker has just been wrecking S. Carolina’s O-line.

      • CHawk Talker Eric

Damn, Herrien’s pretty good RB too!

        Georgia looking tough

  8. 12th chuck

off topic, just read a small piece on the injury settlements hawks gave on Friday, including Maxwell. Anybody know if we can not wait until week 7 for him to play for the hawks if he isn’t signed by anyone else?

  9. Rob Staton

Steven Montez the Colorado QB is the REAL deal.

    • EP

That receiver they’ve got isn’t half bad either. Laviska Shenault was making some sweet plays.

    • GerryG

      That WR Shenault too! Wow!

  10. Volume12

Such a big fan of Udub’s Taylor Rapp. Reminds me of Eric Weddle so much. Not a guy that makes a ton of flashy plays, but he’s a hammer. Hard worker, inspirational.

    And what a different backstory.

  11. DC

Oklahoma SO LB Kenneth Murray might be one to watch for down the road. Looked active vs UCLA with some TFL’s and a sack. Quick.

  12. Rob Staton

Wow, Colorado’s MLB Nate Landman is incredible too. Montez & Landman. Watch them.

    • CHawk Talker Eric

      Montez to Shenault!

What a pass/catch to win the game!

    • Volume12

That was a fun game. Landman was a grown a** man out there.

Colorado has a helluva weapon on offense in WR Laviska Shenault too.

    • DC

I only saw the late 4th quarter but witnessed Nebraska DE Ben Stille beat a tripe team for a sack. Wondering if he flashed elsewhere through the game.

  13. GerryG

Post with Chrome, read with Safari lol

    • Hawktalker#1

I wish that was the answer. It’s a lot more involved than that.

      • GerryG

Yeah everything disappeared again after that worked

  14. Volume12

Buffalo WR Anthony Johnson (6’2, 207 lbs.) is a stud. This is a guy I think Seattle likes. Someone on this Buffalo team. Could also be LB Khalil Hodge. Not a 1st rounder or anything, but really well rounded. Great physicality, turns into a RB after the catch. Big time YAC guy. JUCO transfer.

Best friend was killed yesterday, had the flu, say out the 2nd half. Scored the game winning TD with 1:00 left and finished with 6 rec., 76 yds, 1TD.

Coming off a season in which he had 76 rec, 1356 yds (the most outta returning WRs), 14 TDs

  15. Volume12

PAC 12 after dark never disappoints. Except for the fact that Rod Gilmore wasn’t announcing.

Herm Edwards just beat a top 15 team and now has the same # of wins over one of Michigan’s biggest rivals as Jim Harbaugh. Took him all of 2 games. lol
