College Football week 12 open thread

Apologies for the late posting of this. My schedule this week will initially include (but I will end up watching more games during the week):

Florida vs Vanderbilt
Georgia vs Kentucky
Tennessee vs South Carolina
Utah vs Oregon
Miami vs Clemson

I fear for Will Levis today against Georgia. Kentucky’s season is imploding, the offensive line is a horror movie and Levis is clearly nowhere near 100% health after his weekly beating. This could get ugly quickly. Although we’re seeing how competitive Vanderbilt have become in recent weeks (something lost on people, as we discussed the game last weekend). They’ve played tremendously well against Florida.

I might host a live stream tomorrow discussing Seattle’s draft position plus my observations on the draft and horizontal board. If people have interest in this, let me know in the comments section. I would do it at the conclusion of the Broncos/Raiders game.

TCU as a team have enormous bollocks

Amazing how they keep pulling off these close wins

    • DriveByPoster

Absolutely. What a way to finish the game!

    • Alaskahawk

Incredible how fast they switched players for a field goal and kick in under 20 seconds.

    • TomLPDX

      It was AWESOME!

Some of y’all are gonna snicker at me for saying this because Anthony Richardson lost today and because his stat line shows an INT that wasn’t his fault (betcha haven’t heard that before, but really it’s true).

But I’ve watched every Gators game this year (damned ubiquity of the SEC Network), and ARs growth/progression is truly remarkable.

If you watched him today, you’d see a QB regularly making adjustments at the LOS, going through progressions in the pocket, often reaching his third or even fourth read before pulling the trigger. Not every time, mind you. He’s still prone to one-read a play, but I tell you he’s processing out there in real time at a high level.

And of course we can all see his athletic gifts.

Accordingly, I’m stating my prediction today November 19, that if he declares, Anthony Richardson will be the first pick in the 2023 draft.

    • Rob Staton

This is the problem with draft media though

Feels like the technical side of the game, projection and transferable skills are second to ‘who is winning, who is putting up big numbers’

I’m not come across another website that has discussed that side of things in the way we have and I really wish that wasn’t true

      • Matt

Barring a massive turnaround by Denver; I really do think we will have Richardson as an option. LOVE the guy but he needs time that I just don’t think teams picking at the top will have (to see his development through).

That Denver pick has to be a potential cornerstone at a critical position.

      • Blitzy the Clown

I doubt I’d have the eye for it that I do without the discussions I’ve participated in here on the blog.

‘Seminar’ is too structured a term for the environment here, but I feel like the quality of the blog’s discourse — especially wrt the technical side of the game — is seminar level.

        That starts at the top.

        • Rob Staton

          Thanks Blitzy

        • TomLPDX

          Well said, Blitzy!

      • DriveByPoster

I don’t think it is just a problem with the media. I wonder if it is also something that the players feel about the NFL recruitment process (whether it is true or not is a different matter, of course). For example, I watched Kenneth Walker a couple of times when he was playing for Wake Forest & he was an absolute star. But he felt the need to transfer to Michigan State because he didn’t feel that Wake gave him the visibility & credibility that he would get in the Big 10.

So, if the players feel they have to move to the teams in the strongest leagues, & the best players migrate to the stongest college programs, then, superficially, it seems clear that winning is the primary yardstick for measuring if a player is good or not. QED.

It’s not true of course but it can certainly seem that way at times.

    • DKfan23

Agreed he’s maturing and playing better. I’ve also noticed that his receivers have dropped the ball at least 4 times today. Other than that Richardson played really good today.

  3. Rob Staton

Vandy’s Clark Lea is a heck of a coach

    • Trevor

He has done an incredible job this year with that Vandy team. If he can make Vandy competitive in the SEC that is next level type stuff.

  4. Glasto Hawk UK

Rob a live stream would be great after the Broncs game, however you do deserve a break sometimes.

I see you projected Stetson Bennett as a potential fourth round pick in your early board. I have watched his last couple of games and with my uneducated eye been impressed, seems a strong character, looks a leader, decent arm, and looks controlled. Don’t see him as Seahawks pick if Geno stays due to his age as he would be to old to sit for 2 years, coupled with his height and build he would be a gamble, do you see a landing spot for him?

    • Rob Staton

For me — it’s his athleticism that intrigues me. He can move around a lot better than people realise. Sneaky runner. I think he could be a very viable backup QB at the next level

  5. Romeo A57

Baylor played not to lose at the end and it cost them big time. Way too conservative on offense. I wanted to see Michigan lose just to see the look on Harbaugh’s face.

  6. Rob Staton

What a throw by Levis from his own end zone

    Ringo beaten again

    • Romeo A57

      Wow, that was awesome!

    • Blitzy the Clown

      Clutch

    • cha

      That’s what Levis brings.

      Stupid call on the kickoff.

      Penalty.

Their in their own end zone.

Levis flicks his wrist and they’re at midfield.

      • Rob Staton

        Everything against him

        What he’s had all year

      • Big Mike

Kiper was saying the same thing about Levis on ESPN radio this morning that you have been Rob………incredibly atrocious o-line and several injuries. He’s also standing by his prediction that Levis goes number one overall (which I believe he’s been saying for a number of weeks now).

      • TomLPDX

Even though the Wildcats lost today, they put up a good fight and Will redeemed himself a bit. It was a good 4th quarter game.

  7. Blitzy the Clown

That toss sweep is a nice little play

  8. Trevor

Would love to listen in on the live stream Rob.

  9. Blitzy the Clown

My daily table pound for Kenny MacIntosh!

    • Blitzy the Clown

      *McIntosh, sorry

  10. Burner

Do the stream Rob, I will tune in.

    • TomLPDX

      Me too.

  11. Rob Staton

Miami’s latest car crash performance ongoing

    Fire Cristobal already

    • TomLPDX

Are you kidding! Cristobal is their “savior!” Glad he left Oregon. 🙂 Dan Lanning is such a better coach.

      • TomLPDX

On a side note…to TVD: Get the hell out of Miami…NOW!

        • Neville

With what Michael Penix has done to resuscitate his NFL prospects, I have to imagine Washington would be a consideration for Tyler Van Dyke. Kalen DeBoer’s system is the polar opposite of cristobal’s.

  12. JN

Chris Rodriguez favorite player growing up – marshawn lynch

  13. Rob Staton

I have no idea what that play design was on the Ringo interception

  14. Demitrov

Always love the podcasts Rob. Would love one tomorrow with your thoughts on the state of things.

  15. Blitzy the Clown

    I’m telling ya about McIntosh

  16. Blitzy the Clown

Astonishing that Kentucky are down only 9 at the half

    Kudos to the Wildcat defense

  17. cha

Levis: “Sorry to hit you right in the hands, bud”

He’s getting extensive experience in what it’s like to play for a #1 overall pick quality team.

    • Big Mike

Lovie Smith just called. He doesn’t like your post cha.

  18. Blitzy the Clown

Wow Rodriguez just ran through Jalen Carter (and a few other Bulldogs)

    • Rob Staton

Carter has a tendency to do this

He has god-given talent but I want to see him do the gritty stuff too and just dig in

Kancey plays like his life depends on it. Carter sometimes plays in second gear because he’s better than most college O-liners. Will be interesting to see if he raises himself for the pro’s where life will be harder

      • cha

Kancey would be a great spiritual replacement for Poona.

An undersized guy who plays his heart out and has the fans rooting for him in a special way.

  19. cha

    Beautiful drive. Levis persevering.

  20. Blitzy the Clown

Brilliant drive by Levis. Just brilliant

    • Rob Staton

Won’t be many 99-yard drives scored against this Georgia team

      • Blitzy the Clown

Not to mention won’t be many 1st and goals for GA that end in a turnover on downs.

Kentucky is really stepping up in the second half.

And Levis…to think he’s playing with a bum left toe and injured left shoulder 😮

        • Rob Staton

I love how I get tweets about Levis every week despite him having to play in this s**t-show of a situation all year

Talk about a crappy hand he’s been dealt

Put some of these other QB’s on the one-yard line against Georgia, playing behind Kentucky’s O-line, with Kentucky’s receivers, without a coach on the sideline making all your reads for you. Let’s see how they get on trying to drive 99-yards down by 16 points.

  21. Romeo A57

99 yards against Georgia, impressive. That will debe o. The highlight reel

    • Big Mike

But a fade on the 2 pt attempt. Ugh. Hate that play.

      • Romeo A57

Yeah, that was ugly and disappointing

  22. KennyBadger

    Laces out.

  23. AlaskaHawk

    Ace Ventura Pet Detective!

  24. Rob Staton

Maryland’s DJ cranking out Spice Girls and the Village People in and out of plays vs Ohio State

Well, that’s not what I expected

  25. TomLPDX

It’s been a fun day of Football. Oregon State won! Yay! Washington State won! Yay. Texas A&M finally won (I hate Jimbo but we are stuck with him). OR will beat the Utes (I hope) and the USC/UCLA game should be entertaining at a minimum.

    • TomLPDX

If the Aggies played Vandy this year, we’d probably get our asses kicked.

      Signed, a despondent Aggie.

  26. BoiseSeahawk

    Great Pac12 double-header tonight
UCLA / USC should be a really good game aside from Oregon / Utah.

I appreciate your coverage of the few draft diamonds on the Bruins squad this year Rob with DTR and Charbonnet. Bruins players are almost always overlooked as compared to SC players when it comes to draft day. I’ll be curious to see how good this “Bobo” kid is too. (Best name in NCAA football right now other than KoolAid McKinstry and both are looking like they’ll go pro)

Any players on the SC side worth watching Rob?

  27. Rob Staton

Army beat UConn today… throwing one pass all game

They literally ran on every play expect one

    Won 34-17

    • BoiseSeahawk

and the one pass attempt was incomplete.

    • TomLPDX

I guess Mora had a dirtbag OLine and DLine.

    • Romeo A57

Hey don’t give Pete any ideas, just kidding 🙂
Didn’t the Patriots beat the Bills last year throwing only a few passes?

      • God of Thunder

        Lol on the Pete joke.

Yes, the Pats beat the Bills in a snowstorm or was it a windstorm, where the Pats only threw the ball a I think three times!

    • Palatypus

Navy did this to Army recently. I believe Ricky Dobbs was the quarterback.

  28. Trevor

PFN put out a Mock today where the Hawks got Carter with thier first pick and Anthony Richardson with the second pick. One can dream I guess. Can’t think of a better round 1 than that.

    • cha

Rob’s draft stuff might not be fully cooked yet (nobody’s could possibly be at this point) but it’s a far sight better than most.

    • Ben

It would not be possible for me to be happier if we left the first round with those two players.

  29. TomLPDX

    I really like DTR!

    • TomLPDX

      And Charbonett and Bobo…

  30. Blitzy the Clown

What a second possession for UCLA!

  31. Blitzy the Clown

    Booyah!

  32. Blitzy the Clown

    Bruins gonna ruins them Trojans!

  33. cha

DTR just sent a USC defender into the next zip code on a run block.

Don’t tell me USC/UCLA is not a good rivalry.

  34. Rob Staton

I think Hendon Hooker just blew his knee out

Went down untouched, was screaming in agony. Turned on his knee awkwardly

    • Palatypus

      I think you’re right.

    • Palatypus

They said that South Carolina was a 21-point underdog. They are currently up by 32. That’s a 53-point swing.

  35. BoiseSeahawk

    What a drive by DTR!!

to come back after that sack fumble, that was impressive

  36. ElPasoHawk

DTR is a BAMF. Love the grit this young man is showing. Would not be unhappy to see him drafted by the Hawks.

    • cha

      What a drive!

      • Palatypus

They probably shouldn’t have kicked it short.

  37. Romeo A57

The battle of LA, defense optional. What teams are going to be “Tanking for Willams” next year?

    • Palatypus

See how all the UCLA defensive linemen have their hands on their waists between plays. They’re gassed.

  38. Palatypus

Barlow just stiff-armed a tackler who was behind him at five O’clock. That was a very Bob Cousy thing to do.

    • Palatypus

I would test for this. Coaches always want running backs with great vision. Bob Cousy was great at no-look passes for the Boston Celtics because his bug-eyed peripheral vision could see people behind his ears.

I wonder if Barry Sanders could do that.

  39. HOUSE

    Ouch… DTR throws an INT

  40. Matt

What a game! I LOVE both of those QBs. Can tell their respective teams absolutely love their guys.

  41. VancouverHawksFan

Its clear that if Caleb Williams was draft eligible this year he would go one right? What an absolute star. Creative runner and an absolute HOSE.

  42. GoHawks5151

Dalton Kincaid is a beast. I haven’t watched enough of the ND tight end but I wouldn’t mind this kid

  43. Shane

Rob, your analysis of the College Scene is 1st class, especially as you do this in your spare time whilst working for the BBC, your take and option on a livestream is always welcome, especially now when Seattle has yet another important draft to succeed in like last year. I don’t get to watch college football, so having someone inside knowledge is valuable, especially on who’s hot and who’s not throughout the season. The crap that’s being talked about Will Levis is staggering, people don’t simply the talent and why he’ll be a top 3 pick in the 2023 draft. I’d love to get the Richardson in on Seattle’s 1st pick, as despite Geno’s performance, 2nd season always the true test as to how good someone is.

    • Rob Staton

      Thank you Shane

  44. Josh

Skinner had 2 picks last night.
