College Football week 13 open thread

Here are the initial games I have access to watch this weekend:

Florida vs Florida State (recorded, will watch on Sunday)
South Carolina vs Clemson
Georgia Tech vs Georgia
Auburn vs Alabama
Notre Dame vs USC
LSU vs Texas A&M
Washington vs Washington State

Feel free to use this as an open thread to discuss the CFB weekend.

A quick note that Tony Pauline continues to hear Anthony Richardson will declare for the 2023 draft. Richardson still has plenty to work on but again, so do all of the quarterbacks eligible for the draft. His combination of physical brilliance, system experience and upside will be incredibly enticing to teams.

I continue to think if he is available to the Seahawks, they should at the very least consider drafting him early. Being able to roll with Geno Smith and develop Richardson in the background could be an ideal long-term solution at quarterback — enabling the Seahawks to compete now but set-up their long term future. That doesn’t mean I think they should definitely do this, simply that it should be considered.

Jeremiah Trotter — future high R1 pick

    • clbradley17

Dad is the former 4-time Pro Bowl Eagles linebacker who helped them get to the 2004 Super Bowl, where they narrowly lost to NE 24-21.

    • Volume12

Absolutely. Has a chance to be better than his daddy and that’s saying something.

      • Trevor

Agree completely and Trotter Sr was a beast.

    Forget talent and position fit.

      🙂

    • Blitzy the Clown

Hey Crum! What is best in life?

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their fans!

    • God of Thunder

Shitta? That’s no name, that’s autocorrect.

    • Group Captain Mandrake

I have yet to see an athlete name that trumps Dean Windass.

      • Roy Batty

The most manly name I have ever seen, is and always will be, Joe Montana.

It sounds like a made up name to make someone seam like the ultimate American jock.

        • DarrellDownUnder

          Kinda like Johnny Utah.

        • James P

I always thought that about Colt McCoy.

  3. TomLPDX

You aren’t going to get to see the OSU/Mich game? Should be entertaining. Watched most of the FSU/UF game last night.

    • AlaskaHawk

Michigan QB seems a bit off with his passing in the early going. They are having a hard time moving the ball. Stroud looks good.

      • BoiseSeahawk

It’s wild how much space Stroud has to operate though. Half the drop backs he has like 20 square yards around him for like a minute. He’s looked inaccurate with the time he’s been given.

        • AlaskaHawk

Stroud has had three receivers drop balls that hit their hands, perhaps a bit to far in front- but they did get their hands on the ball.

Wow Ohio State blitzes and Michigan makes them pay. This is going to be a good game!

      • TomLPDX

Looks pretty darned good to me. That was a wide open WR for the TD

        • BoiseSeahawk

In the vacuum of this game, with his pass pro and receivers he’s going to look pretty darned good for sure. I’d agree with you that he’s pretty darned good too but not top 3 Great. Especially when he has the kind of consistent pressure he will in the league. He can throw lasers with accuracy when the target is set and the receivers staring him down or even running back towards him and he can throw the deep ball well (can’t deny that) but I don’t think this game translates to what kind of NFL QB he will be. Who knows maybe he will drastically improve at the next level and I hope he proves me wrong.

          • TomLPDX

He played very well in the game that means a LOT to Mich. I don’t see anywhere where I said he was a top 3 QB for the NFL. Just enjoy the game and celebrate a good game for him and his teammates.

            • BoiseSeahawk

Isn’t this a draft blog though? and specifically draft discussion for the Seahawks? “Top 3” refers to top 3 in the draft overall which is the highest I could see us sit after the season concludes with our first pick, unless we were to trade up or something. I’m just discussing Stroud as a potential selection in the draft, because that’s what this blog is about to me. At the end of the day I hope that Seattle passes on drafting CJ Stroud.

              • TomLPDX

I think we crossed paths here, BoiseSeahawk. We were discussing the play of the Michigan QB, not Stroud. I’m with you on passing on Stroud. He is a system QB for OSU. We good bro.

      • TomLPDX

Michigan just totally screwed up the end of the 2nd QTR. What a brain fart by Harbaugh.

        • TomLPDX

Michigan recovered nicely and took over the 2nd half. Good game Mich!

  4. Blitzy the Clown

    Zach Harrison anyone?

  5. Volume12

I can see why GA-Tech DT Keion White is getting so much buzz. 6’5, 290 and he looks/built like a TE. Had 7 tackles last week, 4 TFL, and 3 sacks.

51 tackles, 13.5 TFL, and 7 sacks on the year from an interior pass rusher is impressive

    • Trevor

Full time 3 tech or could he be a base DE in a 3-4 scheme? Need to check him out.

    @PFN365

Earlier this week, sources close to the #Gators program reiterated to @TonyPauline that the belief is QB Anthony Richardson will enter the 2023 NFL Draft.

And with the first pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans select…

    • Volume12

      Will Levis

      • Blitzy the Clown

        😎

    • Elmer

      Roger Phartalotte

  7. Volume12

Marvin Harrison jr is the best offensive skill player in the country, top 3-5 pick this year if he could come out. Shame that he has to return

  8. Blitzy the Clown

What a play call on 3rd down by Michigan!

    • AlaskaHawk

I got to say Harbaugh is a heck of a coach. Even if I don’t like him as a person. I was puzzled about the end of the half series, not sure where those plays came from.

  9. Blitzy the Clown

What a play by Michigan defender Mike Sainristil! My oh my!

  10. Blitzy the Clown

LMFAO! Edwards 75 yards to the toe of the Shoe!

  11. Big Mike

Love seeing Ohio St. getting beat. Not a fan. Slimy program.

    • Blitzy the Clown

      Same Big Mike

    • Romeo A57

Definitely, and this game turning into a blowout probably keeps Ohio State out of playoff contention.

      • Big Mike

        Let’s hope so.

        • TomLPDX

Hope granted and agree completely with your sentiment about Ohio State. It was a great game and they got their asses kicked in the 2nd half.

I’m really torn between OR and OSU. Want to see Dan Lanning take the conference and have a good first year, but dang…Go BEAVS! No dog in this hunt…just a fan of good Oregon (the state of) football. I feel the same about the UW/WSU game but I’ll be rooting for the underdog there as well…go Cougs!

      • Elmer

If they get in they will be seeded 4th and have to play Georgia.

      • TJ

A CFP without Alabama, Ohio St. and Clemson? What is this world coming to? I might actually care this year. Watching the same 3 teams year after year after year is BAD for CFB. Glad to see new teams in the mix.

  12. Rushless pass

Clemson deserves better than DJ Uiagalelei!

    • Rob Staton

Well, their much hyped D-line hasn’t done anything in weeks

  13. Rob Staton

Can’t wait to see CJ Stroud receive the same scrutiny Richardson and Levis get this week…

    • Matt

I don’t see how someone can invest a top 10 pick in him…he’s so tantalizing with accuracy and arm talent…but man oh man does he process the game very poorly.

    • cha

Do you honestly think he will Rob or will they make excuses for him and soft-pedal it because Ohio St is a high rated program?

      • TomLPDX

He’s the golden child, I don’t see it happening.

      • Rob Staton

I’ve already read something on PFN saying ‘nothing will change CJ Stroud’s stock after this’

Fine. But then don’t overreact to everyone else

People make their mind up on draftable players online, create narratives and most of the time haven’t got a f-in clue what they’re talking about

  14. Hoggs41

Ohio St seems like a bully that just likes to beat on the weak. Once someone punches them back they fold.

    • Rob Staton

      That’s exactly what they are

  15. Big Mike

Sorry TomLPDX, but go Beavs 🦫 !

    • TomLPDX

See my previous comment Big Guy! I’m with you on this one.

      • Big Mike

Missed that. I like it. 😀

  16. Matt

Watching Stroud then Bryce Young…complete opposite players. I’d bet on Young because he really sees the game well.

    • TomLPDX

Can we put Young’s brain in Will’s body?

      • Jabroni-DC

I’m sure you could attempt to do that but it’s gonna create a very strange, national news type situation. I say go for it though.

  17. TomLPDX

Geez Dan, take the points! This game has too much left in it.

    • TomLPDX

Like I said…The Beavs are FIRED UP!

      • TomLPDX

Aaaaand, the Pac12 Refs win again. Geez!

        • TomLPDX

Damn refs. I hate PAC12 refs.

  18. AlaskaHawk

I’ve seen some better play out of up coming quarterbacks vs the senior quarterbacks. Makes me wonder if we can’t get Levi or Richardson if it’s worth looking for a quarterback = other than a backup in the late rounds. The Seahawks do have both Smith and Lock already.

    • Matt

If there is real conviction in a QB in R1 – I think you *have* to pull the trigger. If they think drafting a QB is a smart move but don’t have serious conviction, then I agree with your take – find someone later on.

Bottom line – I think if a QB is there that they love; don’t get cute and take advantage of that high pick. This is like money you won from a lotto ticket. Don’t spend it on a car – take advantage of the luck with a serious long term investment.

      Just my opinion of course.

    • Romeo A57

This was supposed to be the year for the Seahawks to pick a top QBOTF prospect. With Geno playing well this year it has become less important and building around Geno seems a reasonable strategy.

The downside of not drafting one of the top QBs this year is that you may not have a high draft pick in 2024. With 2 Firsts( probably one a top ten pick thanks to Denver) and 2 Seconds this year, Seahawks have the ammo to probably get one of the top 4 QBs. Caleb in 2024 may be better than any of the prospects this year , but if Seattle only had one First and one Second Round pick then they probabky won’t be able to get near him

  19. AlaskaHawk

Keep an eye on Christian Gonzalez, cornerback for Oregon Ducks. Just had a high point interception, 4th of the season. I think he’s a senior.

    • Seattle Person

I think he’s a junior but he’s 6’1 or 6’2. He’s really fluid back-peddling and flipping his hips. I think he’ll go in the first if he runs well. Rob had him mocked to the Ravens in the 20s. I think he has a chance to go higher after the draft process.

  20. Big Mike

Oregon St would be dangerous if they had a real QB
I wonder why Jonathan Smith can’t seem to recruit one?

    • Peter

Feels like that is getting to be an issue for a lot of the pac 12. Also ran transfers all over.

Dtr. Solid. Riley obviously with Williams.

Have no clue what is going on with either AZ program. CO?

Beavers and the Utes with some decent qb play could both be a thing.

  21. Peter

Nothing against oregon if they win but damn the beavers in it with a qb giving the ducks two ints on only 13 attempts.

  22. TomLPDX

    Wow!

  23. Rob Staton

So Oregon lost to UW and Oregon State.

    That’ll hurt…

    • Jabroni-DC

There are only two things I can’t stand in this world.
People who are Intolerant of other people’s college teams…
      and the Ducks!

      • GoHawks5151

A sophisticated movie fan I see

  24. Blitzy the Clown

    What a game in Corvalis!

    Congrats to the Beavers!

    • TomLPDX

      It was a great game!

    • AlaskaHawk

My family was rooting for the Beavers so I loved it. I thought the refs were going to sink them, but it all worked out well. Granted with help from a muffed punt and a weird bounce on the one yard line on a kickoff.

Mostly it just shows the power of a good running game, my mom commented on watching the linemen pushing the running back forward in a scrum. Good stuff!

    • GoHawks5151

      GO MF’N BEAVS!!!! HAIL OSU!

    • Elmer

      YES!

  25. TomLPDX

If you get a chance, watch Devon Achane tonight.

    • TomLPDX

Oh, and by the way…TAMU has a QB for the the next few years. His name is Conner Weigman

    • TomLPDX

Achane went for 211 rushing yards tonight with 2 TDs. Great way to end his Aggie career.

  26. Colin

Foskey is making a case for being the second EDGE off the board. A first round of Carter in the top 5 and Foskey in the 20’s would be amazing.

    • Rob Staton

I would be stunned if he ended up being the second EDGE taken

He’s a very solid player. Whether he has the twitch to be more than ‘decent’ at the next level I’m not sure. There’s nothing wrong with decent. But I’m not sold he’s a R1.

      • Colin

Would you take him or Myles Murphy for our system if you had to choose?

  27. Colin

Would you take him or Myles Murphy for our system if you had to choose?

  28. Sea Mode

Holy cow, this dude is on fast forward!

    https://mobile.twitter.com/Texans_Thoughts/status/1596674091725262848

That 2nd juke is one of the best I’ve ever seen.

  29. Trevor

If the Hawks don’t go early Spencer Rattler is a guy I would take a flier on during Day 3. Has all the physical talent in the world if he can figure things out. Seems like an ideal project to try and develop.

    • Rob Staton

Would have to be late day three. The talent is clearly there but:

      1. He’s had two good games

      2. Even today he threw a dumb interception

      • Trevor

Agree completely he has been a disaster the last couple of years. He is a long shot but if the Hawks decide to not go QB early then I would prefer a guy like Rattler on day 3 as a lottery ticket to bring in and try to develop.

  30. pdway

I dont watch nearly as much college football as many of you – and so don’t really weigh in much in that area – and also, sorry if this has been well covered on here – but is Caleb Williams the SDB consensus top pick in the ‘24 draft?

    what a wildly entertaining player…

    • Rob Staton

I think it’s a bit early to say that

    • cha

That RW backyard run was super fun.

      It was also very dangerous.

You run without securing the ball like that in the NFL and you’ll get stripped.

You’re also asking to get clobbered or brought down awkwardly.

  31. Rob Staton

Another great day for Mario Cristobal I see…

    • Robbie

The worst coach in college football!

    • GoHawks5151

I feel like a lot of parents will be picking up their kids

    • cha

And that is without facing Calijah Kancey and his 92 PFF pass rush grade.

    • TomLPDX

So glad he isn’t at Oregon anymore.

  32. Steven

Michael Penix Jr has a really strong arm when throwing down the field, but his offense, like CJ Stroud’s, is as basic as a children’s popup book. Like, you could probably teach it to a random stranger walking down the street. Plus his medicals make Dee Eskridge look like a pillar of health. Don’t see how he is even drafted at this point

    • Palatypus

A random stranger here in Florida is probably on meth.

      • Steven

If Penix Jr didn’t go to UW, no one would think anything of him. The local bias is strong here.

        • Palatypus

The local bias here in FloraBama doesn’t even acknowledge that the PAC-12 exists,

    • Rob Staton

He’ll be drafted but you’re right about the offense

  33. Steven

If Anthony Richardson or Will Levis went to UW, they would be in the Heisman race. Put MPJ on Kentucky and they don’t win three games.

    • Palatypus

Based on Kentucky’s offensive line and MPJ’s injury history, I doubt he would last three games.

    • Palatypus

Also, I don’t think Barry Sanders could have won the Heisman at Washington because the East coast media just doesn’t care.

  34. Palatypus

One of the announcers just said that WSU planting their flag at the fifty-yard line in Seattle was “the ultimate sign of disrespect” and that “they are really salty about it.”

I don’t know. It’s not like they pulled a Randy Moss and acted out taking a crap on it.

Or actually took a crap on it.

  35. God of Thunder

The Apple Cup wasn’t too bad viewing!

But on to QBs. Bryce Young: he’s so smooth and smart, processes the game well, good arm, nice mechanics, but my word he’s … slender.

  36. Roy Batty

I just watched the Apple Cup on YT. Great back and forth, but the superior athletes for the Huskies started to wear down the Cougs and control the LOS, allowing so many explosive plays to develop.

Penix has a good arm, but he is a one-read QB. The Washington receivers were better than the Coug DB’s, making his life so much easier. He only seemed to look at his second and third reads when he was scrambling. At times, he would stare down his receiver, even if both he and his his receiver were surrounded by defenders. If he did that in the NFL he would lead the league in INTs. A day 3 pickup by some team?

    A,very entertaining game, overall.

Oh, and Robert Ferrel has hands made of super glue. How many fingertip catches can one man make?

  37. Happy Hawk

David Shaw resigns as HC of Stanford today. He must have another gig already lined up in the pipeline.

    • Rob Staton

He says he hasn’t. I think it was just time. Stanford went stale years ago.

  38. Thomas

    Rob,

Speaking as a Huskies fan, I’ll be interested to hear how you evaluated Cam Ward. I know you’ve graded him before. It seems like he carried WSU last night.

  39. Robbie

    Oh COME on! Muffed punt…..ridiculous
