Three round mock draft: 24th March

Unfortunately we’ve had to postpone tonight’s live stream. We’ll re-arrange soon. However, it does mean I can post my three-round mock draft a day earlier.

I haven’t done one of these for well over a month — so here’s a three-round projection. It’s a little different than the others you’ll see on the internet. Yet this could easily be the most unpredictable draft we’ve ever seen, given the circumstances.

Expect surprises. I wanted to show that here.

I’ve put the mock in list form first, then there’s a note on each pick. I finish with thoughts on Seattle’s selection and the options available.

Pre-mock notes

— There’s a lot of talk that we’ll see four quarterbacks drafted in the first eight picks. I’m just not convinced you can make a call on Trey Lance or Justin Fields that early. I’d have a really tough time if I was Miami and Atlanta at #3 and #4 passing on the two best players in the draft not named Trevor Lawrence.

— This might be the most explosive offensive line class ever. I’m recording pro-day data for a TEF article down the line. Some of the testing by the O-liners so far is remarkable. It’s an exciting group.

— There’s strong depth at receiver and cornerback in this draft too — with a value sweet-spot all the way from the end of the first round all the way to the top of the third. For all the hand-wringing about no combine or meetings — there’s clearly a lot to like about this class, especially on day two.

#76 New York Giants — Benjamin St. Juste (CB, Minnesota)
#77 New England — Forfeited
#78 LA Chargers — Ifeatu Melifonwu (CB, Illinois)
#79 Minnesota — Talanoa Hufanga (S, USC)
#80 Arizona — Chris Rumph (DE/LB, Duke)
#81 Las Vegas — D’Wayne Eskridge (WR, Western Michigan)

#85 Philadelphia (v/IND) — Dylan Moses (LB, Alabama)
#86 Tennessee — Cade Johnson (WR, South Dakota State)
#87 New York Jets (v/SEA) — Cam McGrone (LB, Michigan)
#88 Pittsburgh — Nico Collins (WR, Michigan)
#89 Detroit (v/LAR) — Amon-Ra St. Brown (WR, USC)
#90 Cleveland — Justin Hilliard (LB, Ohio State)
#91 Minnesota (v/BAL) — Richie Grant (S, UCF)
#92 Cleveland (v/NO) — Dyami Brown (WR, North Carolina)

#102 LA Rams — Tutu Atwell (WR, Louisville)
#103 San Francisco — Jemar Jefferson (RB, Oregon State)
#104 LA Rams — Jaelon Darden (WR, North Texas)
#105 Baltimore — Spencer Brown (T, Northern Iowa)
#106 New Orleans — Cornell Powell (WR, Clemson)

First round

#1 Jacksonville — Trevor Lawrence (QB, Clemson)

Urban Meyer took this job because of big Trev.

#2 New York Jets — Zach Wilson (QB, BYU)
His ability to drive the ball downfield from difficult angles, off-balance, and on the run, is reminiscent of the top quarterbacks dominating the modern NFL.

#3 Miami (v/HOU) — Penei Sewell (T, Oregon)
The depth at receiver means they might be able to wait on the position, while plugging in Penei Sewell to complete their O-line rebuild.

#4 Atlanta — Kyle Pitts (TE, Florida)
I’m just not convinced you can pass up a player like Pitts to take a rough-around-the-edges quarterback prospect, when Matt Ryan’s only 35.

#5 Cincinnati — Ja’Marr Chase (WR, LSU)
Joe Burrow and Jam’Marr Chase were the dynamic duo in 2019. Reunite them.

#6 Philadelphia — Jaylen Waddle (WR, Alabama)
The Eagles love speed. Waddle provides the electric downfield quickness that De’Vonta Smith lacks.

#7 Detroit — DeVonta Smith (WR, Alabama)
This is a huge need for the Lions and DeVonta Smith would be a great pickup for them here.

#8 Carolina — Mac Jones (QB, Alabama)
I’m not convinced Jones will be their guy. But DeShaun Watson is hardly in a position to be acquired at the moment.

#9 Denver — Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (LB, Notre Dame)
Highly explosive and dynamic — a true first round talent. He can jump a 39-inch vertical and a 10-3 broad jump.

#10 Dallas — Patrick Surtain II (CB, Alabama)
There are questions about his long speed but he’s in fantastic physical shape, he’s explosive and he can start quickly.

#11 New York Giants — Rashawn Slater (G, Northwestern)
I’m not as sold on Slater as some others but plenty think he’s a top-10 prospect. I think he’ll make a good guard.

#12 San Francisco — Kellen Mond (QB, Texas A&M)
I think he’s a terrific prospect and the third best quarterback in the draft.

#13 LA Chargers — Azeez Ojulari (DE, Georgia)
He’s fast and explosive with a dynamic burst to threaten the edge and the balance to straight and attack the quarterback. He has long arms. He could be special.

#14 Minnesota — Jaelen Phillips (DE, Miami)
Phillips was once a major recruiting superstar and has natural talent to get after the quarterback. Few players have his upside in this draft.

#15 New England — Justin Fields (QB, Ohio State)
The athleticism is top notch. The decision making, processing and ability to go through progressions is a concern. He and Cam Newton can run a similar offense — so this would be a seamless transition.

#16 Arizona — Jaycee Horn (CB, South Carolina)
He looks like a Greek God of a cornerback. Incredibly put together. Dominated Auburn’s Seth Williams.

#17 Las Vegas — Alijah Vera-Tucker (G, USC)
He’s just a class act. He has short arms so will kick inside but his explosive testing will be right up Tom Cable’s street.

#18 Miami — Micah Parsons (LB, Penn State)
There are some character question marks that could lead to a bit of a fall.

#19 Washington — Christian Darrisaw (T, Virginia Tech)
The profile is there but he reminds me a bit of Eugene Monroe. Can he be arsed to be great?

#20 Chicago — Trey Lance (QB, North Dakota State)
I thought his pro-day was more miss than hit. His technique isn’t quite right and it leads to inaccurate throws, even in a scripted setting. I’m not convinced you can bank on him in the top-five. For me, he’s a slightly better prospect than Jordan Love.

#21 Indianapolis — Kwity Paye (DE, Michigan)
The Colts love an insane physical profile and while Paye is rough around the edges, he has a high ceiling.

#22 Tennessee — Zaven Collins (LB, Tulsa)
He only ran a 5.03 forty at SPARQ but when you put on the tape he jumps off the screen. He looks like a first rounder.

#23 New York Jets (v/SEA) — Travis Etienne (RB, Clemson)
I thought he had a ‘meh’ 2020 season but ultimately he’s dynamic and quick and could produce big results in the Shanahan running scheme.

#24 Pittsburgh — Javonte Williams (RB, North Carolina)
He had a record 0.48 broken tackles per rush attempt in 2020, registered 7.0 YPC and 4.59 yards-after-contact per carry. He’s exceptional.

#25 Jacksonville (v/LAR) — Elijah Moore (WR, Ole Miss)
Moore is sturdy for his size and just a marvellous playmaker. He’s underrated.

#26 Cleveland — Levi Onwuzurike (DT, Washington)
He gets after it up front with effort and speed. He can disrupt. Some will be put off by a lack of length and skinny lower body.

#27 Baltimore — Josh Myers (C, Ohio State)
Incredibly consistent, tough and very athletic center with a long career ahead of him. He ran a 4.49 short shuttle at 310lbs.

#28 New Orleans — Caleb Farley (CB, Virginia Tech)
He has talent but you don’t see much effort in run-support, his tackling isn’t great and he’s not a physical player. He’s a player you want to like a lot but there’s enough to make you pause for thought.

#29 Green Bay — Creed Humphrey (C, Oklahoma)
He’s a 3.25 TEF tester and teams will covet his mix of explosive physicality, aggressiveness, combo-blocking and agility. Players with his profile go early.

#30 Buffalo — Kelvin Joseph (CB, Kentucky)
Looks the part of a pro cornerback and after departing LSU he showed well for Kentucky

#31 Kansas City — Landon Dickerson (C, Alabama)
Teams will just love his personality and playing style. It won’t be a shock if someone takes a punt in this range.

#32 Tampa Bay — Najee Harris (RB, Alabama)
You’re the Super Bowl champs. Why not make a pick like this?

Second round

#33 Jacksonville — Pat Freiermuth (TE, Penn State)
The ‘Baby Gronk’ nickname is warranted. Superb body control and size.

#34 New York Jets — Eric Stokes (CB, Georgia)
An ascending player with great length, speed, agility and great consistency on tape.

#35 Atlanta — Trevon Moehrig (S, TCU)
This has become a big need for the Falcons. Moehrig is steady if somewhat unspectacular.

#36 Miami (v/HOU) — Elijah Molden (CB, Washington)
Outstanding player who will only last this long based on his size and straight-line speed. Ran a 3.93 short shuttle at SPARQ and jumped a 37 inch vertical.

#37 Philadelphia — Greg Newsome (CB, Northwestern)
Not a huge fan personally, I think he’s fairly average. He ran a quicker than expected forty but appeared to tire quickly during his pro-day workout.

#38 Cincinnati — Christian Barmore (DT, Alabama)
Turned it on late in the season but had a slow start. No doubt he can flash as a pass rusher in college but can he do it consistently at the next level?

#39 Carolina — Jalen Mayfield (T, Michigan)
Tackle or guard prospect with the skills to succeed at either position

#40 Denver — Tyson Campbell (CB, Georgia)
He has great size and agility but his long-speed might be an issue and I just didn’t see him play the ball well enough in college.

#41 Detroit — Tylan Wallace (WR, Oklahoma State)
Aggressive, physical receiver who plays beyond his size. The Lions double-dip at a key need.

#42 New York Giants — Gregory Rousseau (DE, Miami)
He’s long and lean but a lot of his wins are unusual. He’s not a dynamic speed rusher and he lacks the sand in his pants to control as a five-technique.

#43 San Francisco — Brevin Jordan (TE, Miami)
He ran a sensational 4.21 short shuttle at 250lbs at SPARQ.

#44 Dallas — Milton Williams (DE/DT, LA Tech)
What a pro-day! He ran a 4.25 short shuttle at 284lbs and jumped a 38.5 inch vertical. Incredible physical talent who can rush inside/out.

#45 Jacksonville (v/MIN) — Alim McNeill (DT, NC State)
Massive, highly athletic prospect who will shock people when he runs and does the agility testing. Ran a 4.27 short shuttle at SPARQ.

#46 New England — Wyatt Davis (G, Ohio State)
Having lost Joe Thuney, Davis could be a high-upside replacement.

#47 LA Chargers — Walker Little (T, Stanford)
He has what you want in a left tackle. He’ll only last because he hasn’t played for two years.

#48 Las Vegas — Baron Browning (LB, Ohio State)
Wow-athlete at linebacker with tremendous character and intensity. Ran a 4.18 short shuttle at SPARQ and jumped a 37 inch vertical.

#49 Arizona — Daviyon Nixon (DT, Iowa)
A TFL machine in 2020 (13.5). Nixon creates havoc from the interior and is a true playmaking defensive tackle.

#50 Miami — Kadarius Toney (WR, Florida)
There’s some talk that he loves making music more than football and there’s a roughness to his game.

#51 Washington — Davis Mills (QB, Stanford)
I think he’s a terrific prospect. Only having 11 starts to judge isn’t anywhere near enough, so he will last. Yet he has everything you want in terms of a player to draft and develop.

#52 Chicago — Asante Samuel Jr (CB, Florida State)
They created a hole at cornerback and it needs to be filled.

#53 Tennessee — Rashod Bateman (WR, Minnesota)
Had a highly consistent 2019 season but followed it up with a weird 2020 — before he wisely took himself out before damaging his stock any further.

#54 Indianapolis — Sam Cosmi (T, Texas)
They need a tackle and the Colts consistently take highly explosive athletes for their O-line. Cosmi excelled at his pro-day.

#55 Pittsburgh — Teven Jenkins (T, Oklahoma State)
He’s big and physical but do you need to kick him up the arse to max out his potential?

#56 Seattle — Quinn Meinerz (G/C, UWW)
The Seahawks will be fortunate if Meinerz is here. His combination of explosive traits, length and a wow-Senior Bowl could push him into the top-50 easily.

#57 LA Rams — Tommy Togiai (DT, Ohio State)
Incredibly physical interior defender who is a better-than-expected pass rusher and his motor never stops.

#58 Baltimore — Joe Tryon (DE, Washington)
He could go a lot earlier than this. He looks like a Terminator and can rush the edge with skill of brute force.

#59 Cleveland — Payton Turner (DE, Houston)
In terms of potential, Turner’s upside is through the roof. He can rush the edge with speed, mix things up with power and hand-use and he has superb balance to bend the arc.

#60 New Orleans — Terrace Marshall Jr (WR, LSU)
Marshall has some concentration drops but he also excelled during a difficult 2020 season for LSU.

#61 Buffalo — Tommy Tremble (TE, Notre Dame)
He’s a head-hunter as a blocker. His second name is what players do when they’re near him on a run-block. He destroys defenders.

#62 Green Bay — Jayson Oweh (DE, Penn State)
He has a first round physical profile and day three tape.

#63 Kansas City — Rondale Moore (WR, Purdue)
He’s fast, explosive and an incredible tester. The question is — can he be more than just a gadget player at the next level?

#64 Tampa Bay — D’Ante Smith (T, ECU)
He was superb at the Senior Bowl and whether he plays at tackle or guard he has the kind of potential teams crave on the O-line.

Third round

#65 Jacksonville — Amari Rodgers (WR, Clemson)
They need to build around Trevor Lawrence and he already has chemistry with Rodgers, who is built like a running back.

#66 New York Jets — Ronnie Perkins (DE, Oklahoma)
I love some of his tape and he plays with his hair on fire — but he doesn’t have an ideal frame for the position and his testing was pretty ‘meh’.

#67 Houston — Alex Leatherwood (G/T, Alabama)
Big, long, physical offensive lineman. He just isn’t very spectacular and he didn’t excel at the Senior Bowl.

#68 Atlanta — Ben Cleveland (G, Georgia)
He’s the ‘mountain’ from Game of Thrones. We’ve always said he’s a far better athlete than many think. He’s 350lbs and runs a 4.85. The strongest player in the draft.

#69 Cincinnati — Aaron Banks (G, Notre Dame)
Big, tough, physical left guard. This would be tremendous value.

#70 Philadelphia — Joseph Ossai (LB, Texas)
Explosive linebacker-turned pass rusher who could quickly move into their rotation.

#71 Denver — Jay Tufele (DT, USC)
Kind of a forgotten man in this class but he does a bit of everything — interior anchor, some pass rush ability.

#72 Detroit — Nick Bolton (LB, Missouri)
I really like Nick Bolton but the problem is he just isn’t very fast. He’s an old-school thumper.

#73 Carolina — Shaun Wade (CB, Ohio State)
He had a very disappointing 2020 season and it seems his stock has plummeted. He can still be a great slot corner for me.

#74 Washington (v/SF) — Carlos Basham (DE, Wake Forest)
He has physical tools but does he need to slim down to play the edge or get bigger to kick inside?

#75 Dallas — Dillon Radunz (T, North Dakota State)
Physical and held his own at the Senior Bowl but probably has to kick inside.

#76 New York Giants — Benjamin St. Juste (CB, Minnesota)
Long, intelligent, extremely agile cornerback who does a superb job playing the ball to break up passes.

#77 New England — Forfeited

#78 LA Chargers — Ifeatu Melifonwu (CB, Illinois)
I think he looks more like a safety than a corner.

#79 Minnesota — Talanoa Hufanga (S, USC)
I really like him. He plays like Jamal Adams for a fraction of the cost.

#80 Arizona — Chris Rumph (DE/LB, Duke)
Possibly the ideal replacement for Haason Reddick. He’s a hybrid SAM/DE.

#81 Las Vegas — D’Wayne Eskridge (WR, Western Michigan)
A dynamite kick returner who can make things happen in space.

#82 Miami — Khalil Herbert (RB, Virginia Tech)
He’s super quick and when he has a lane he can accelerate and break off big gains. Slightly older than ideal.

#83 Washington — Jevon Holland (S, Oregon)
Another forgotten man in this class after opting out who could provide some value.

#84 Chicago — Trey Smith (G, Tennessee)
He looks like a first round pick in terms of body type. His tape and health record is more day-three level.

#85 Philadelphia (v/IND) — Dylan Moses (LB, Alabama)
He was underwhelming in 2020 after returning from an ACL-tear.

#86 Tennessee — Cade Johnson (WR, South Dakota State)
He reminds me a lot of Tyler Lockett. He’s incredibly mature and won’t be fazed by the first weeks in camp. Superb Senior Bowl.

#87 New York Jets (v/SEA) — Cam McGrone (LB, Michigan)
Robert Salah loves athletic, dynamic linebackers with speed and agility. That’s Cam McGrone.

#88 Pittsburgh — Nico Collins (WR, Michigan)
The Steelers do a good job finding value at receiver. Collins competes for the ball well and can be a red zone threat. Can he separate at the next level, though?

#89 Detroit (v/LAR) — Amon-Ra St. Brown (WR, USC)
He’s polished and consistent but is he fast enough to go earlier than this?

#90 Cleveland — Justin Hilliard (LB, Ohio State)
His performance level at the end of the season was remarkable, especially against Northwestern.

#91 Minnesota (v/BAL) — Richie Grant (S, UCF)
He excelled at the Senior Bowl and made a lasting impression with his playmaking ability.

#92 Cleveland (v/NO) — Dyami Brown (WR, North Carolina)
Seemed to do a good job moving the chains for UNC and he can get downfield.

#93 Green Bay — Tyler Shelvin (DT, LSU)
Big, physical nose who can eat up space but he offers no pass rushing upside.

#94 Buffalo — Jamien Sherwood (S, Auburn)
Great testing numbers, packs a punch and could be terrific value here.

#95 Kansas City — Liam Eichenburg (T, Notre Dame)
The O-line rebuild continues. He could be tried at guard or tackle.

#96 Tampa Bay — Michal Menet (C, Penn State)
There’s nothing that spectacular about Menet — he’s just very, very consistent.

#97 New England — Joshua Kaindoh (DE, Florida State)
Kaindoh could go undrafted. But a few years ago he was the talk of recruiting circles and he has rare traits.

#98 LA Chargers — Jamin Davis (LB, Kentucky)
Solid linebacker prospect who flashes some big plays but doesn’t ‘wow’ on tape.

#99 New Orleans — Andre Cisco (S, Syracuse)
A dynamic athlete and playmaker who has a shot to be really good at the next level. Ran a 4.27 short shuttle at SPARQ, adding a 36 inch vertical.

#100 Dallas — Kenny Yeboah (TE, Ole Miss)
He has real mismatch qualities attacking the seam and in the red zone.

#101 Tennessee — Jackson Carman (T, Clemson)
I thought his tape was underwhelming and he’s very much a move-inside prospect.

#102 LA Rams — Tutu Atwell (WR, Louisville)
Explosive and capable of chunk plays but really undersized.

#103 San Francisco — Jemar Jefferson (RB, Oregon State)
I’ve got a feeling he could emerge as a mid-round steal.

#104 LA Rams — Jaelon Darden (WR, North Texas)
I can’t recall a player so adept at juking defenders in the open field.

#105 Baltimore — Spencer Brown (T, Northern Iowa)
Explosive tester, could eventually replace Orlando Brown at right tackle.

#106 New Orleans — Cornell Powell (WR, Clemson)
Only one season of production but he really flashed at times in 2020.

Thoughts on Seattle’s pick

It’s still not clear exactly how the Seahawks are adding to the roster, given they’re over the cap. No news has emerged on any contract restructures and there haven’t been any trades either.

The signing of Ethan Pocic was a classic draft hedge. It’s cheap, he can be carried as a backup and if the board works against you — you’ve at least retained your 2020 starter.

There are some strong center options in this draft. Explosive, physical players.

I have the Seahawks selecting Quinn Meinerz, who ticks every box for Seattle.

He has +33 inch arms. He had a superb Senior Bowl. He’s highly explosive — jumping a 32 inch vertical and a 9-3 broad jump at his pro-day. Had he achieved his 35 reps on the bench press (he didn’t do the bench due to a slight wrist issue) he would be a 3.41 TEF tester.

His attitude, personality and physical profile makes him the ideal Seahawks center target.

Of course, there will be other teams who also feel this way. It won’t be a surprise if he’s off the board by #56 and in that scenario, the Seahawks would have to pivot.

In my projection Creed Humphrey and Landon Dickerson are also off the board (although Humphrey has short arms and Dickerson has a concerning injury record). I still believe there’s a chance Josh Myers will go in the late first round too.

If Meinerz wasn’t available, they could look at guards instead with the possibility of shifting Damien Lewis inside (something I’m not a huge fan of). Ben Cleveland is a huge mountain of a man — the strongest player in the draft with great athleticism to match. Alex Leatherwood had an excellent pro-day. Aaron Banks, Dillon Radunz, Trey Smith and D’Ante Smith are alternative options.

There are pass rushers available — I’ve interviewed both Joe Tryon and Payton Turner and they’d be great options. Ronnie Perkins is there but I’m not sure his body type and agility testing will appeal to Seattle.

Jayson Oweh is pretty much Seattle’s dream of a LEO but while his physical profile is worth a top-10 grade, his tape is day-three level. Chris Rumph could be a SAM/LEO option.

At receiver, the highly explosive Rondale Moore falls a bit this time. There’s no doubting his athletic upside, it’s just a case of whether he’s just a gadget player or someone capable of becoming an all-round dynamic weapon.

Amari Rodgers might not have run well enough (4.5’s) to be considered. Cade Johnson was a joy to interview and plays a lot like Tyler Lockett.

The Seahawks need a third wide receiver one way or another.

There are plenty of quality players available. Picking in the 30-70 range will be a big deal this year. The Seahawks could really do with getting back into that part of the draft.

I’ve interviewed a number of the prospects in Seattle’s range here. I’ve re-posted them below in case you missed them, starting with my conversation with Quinn Meinerz…

Awesome, looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this. Maybe there will also be more to talk about in case something else happens today. I still want Dunlap and KJ back on the team!

      Me too Tom

Im skeptical of them adding more, these moves scream at a cheap approach to the DL. It may work, both of these contracts are pretty small, and they are solid, if unspectacular players. I fear, they view these signings as validation for their bargain basement approach to the DL. The problem is, they have no game changers, nobody that can really impact a game plan, or rise up and take over.

Adding Dunlap to this group, which now has some depth, would start to look pretty solid, and would allow him to lessen his snaps. Lets hope they do it, and I am wrong.

Is TB going to go undefeated? Bringing everyone back and still have all their draft picks. They draft well, sign their own and sprinkle solid FA.

Drafting is key and Hawks have tossed their picks away (trades and bad process/evaluations) for the last 4+ years.

    • John_s

It helps that they’ve drafted no lower than 19th since 2014. Within that time they’ve had 6 picks in the top 13

  3. Aaron Bostrom

Tom Pellisero just said both Sherm and Hawks are open to a reunion. Hope it happens.

The salary cap is an illusion! Sign sign sign!

I’ve been encouraged by the Seahawks using some means to stretch out the cap hits.

Now let’s step on the gas and finish this.

Sherman, Dunlap, a 3rd WR would set up the draft and the rest of the offseason nicely.

        • SpennyDunks

Dunlap, Sherm, and a cheap veteran with upside like Marquise Goodwin would really solidify this offseason for me and make me relatively optimistic for the season.

I could see them using future picks to get back into the draft this year as it seems like no other options (trading RW, Adams or Wagner) seem to really be likely at this point. Kick the can down the road and give this roster its one last chance.

    • Rob Staton

      Just get it done

Watched it earlier. Seems purely speculative. Nowhere does it state that the Hawks are open to a reunion.
        Am I missing something?

        • Sea Mode

I don’t know. It’s certainly no coincidence that Pelissero happened to be a guest on this segment, where he happened to be tossed a question about a Richard Sherman return, and it just so happened that he had a tidbit to share about it. That’s planned out.

If anything, it comes from Sherm’s side, because the only thing Tom said with certainty was: “Here’s what I can tell you: Richard Sherman is open to a return to Seattle.” The rest was speculation: “I believe the Seahawks would also be open to having Sherman back… etc.”

But when even national media starts recognizing that a reunion could be good for both parties and that there is no lingering bad blood to stop it from happening, then the idea starts to grow on people and maybe eventually even on Sherm and the Seahawks as well.

          • Gohawks5151

Sherm is his own agent too. So if the idea is out there then it’s probably from him.

    A note to the community…

I am gathering TEF scores from the pro-days. Some very interesting results and data. I will publish when the pro-days are complete.

I’ve been calculating for some guys, too. Problem is when some of them don’t bench. Usually if it’s just that missing then I use 24 reps, which is below the desired 27 but is usually close to the class average in past years.

But for someone like Meinerz, who didn’t bench because of his broken hand, I think you can safely give him 27 or even more. He said that his goal was 35 reps, and he beat his stated goals in both the 40 (said, 4.9, ran 4.86-4.96) and the vert (said 30, jumped 32). Plus he published some pretty impressive videos of him lifting things at home workouts, like the one you played back for him in the interview.

Quinn Meinerz: 3.12 TEF, 99.77 wTEF @320 lbs. (*supposing 27 bench)

      George Balekji
      @GeorgeBalekji
      ·Feb 3

Quinn Meinerz on his pro day goals:

      Run a 4.9 40-yard dash, 225 bench for 35 reps, 30 inch vertical.

(If he would have gotten 35 reps, his TEF would be 3.41 and wTEF 109.26!)

  5. Trevor

Dug up whatever I could find on Hyder last night from 2020 season and came away pretty impressed. He is not Dunlap but is a huge upgrade over Green and Collier at 5 Tech.

    Ideal scenario for 2021 DL

DE : Dunlap, Mayowa, Hyder, Robinson, Taylor?
DT: Mone, Reed, Ford, Collier (3Tech on Passing Downs)

    Trade or cut Green

    • Canadian Hawk

Does anyone know the status of Darrell Taylor?

      Is he finally healthy?

      • cha

Nothing since he was able to practice at the very end of the season and proclaimed by PC that he’d play if they went deeper in the playoffs.

I’ll say what I said last year about Penny: Take all the “good reports from VMAC”, workout Instagram posts, teammates saying in how great a shape he is, and PC saying he’ll start Week One with a huge grain of salt.

Remember, PC said all year he was thisclose to being ready to play. He didn’t play.

        Set the expectation bar low.

        • Canadian Hawk

          Thx Cha.

So is this just a case of remarkably bad luck or poor due diligence from the Seahawk medical staff?

The fact they traded up to get him, I’m assuming they were fully aware of his health status?

          • dcd2

No chance they would have picked him, let alone traded up for him if they knew how bad his injury was. Rob has touched on it a number of times, but COVID prevented teams from doing proper medical evals last year.

          • GerryG

Joe Fann ( I think) has a good article last year on this and was not too flattering, basically saying very poor due diligence

          • cha

A little from Column A and a little from Column B.

Taylor played through the injury, had a rod inserted in his leg in January and didn’t do the Senior Bowl or the Combine.

The Hawks had him in for a visit before COVID shut all the visits down.

They said they were thinking of taking him in the first round.

Were they able to do enough due diligence? It’s hard to definitively say but there is no way they would have traded up big draft capital thinking he’d miss the entire season.

            • GerryG

Makes you wonder if some folks did think that, and overly optimistic injury timeline Pete overruled them

            • dcd2

They said they were thinking of taking him in the first round.

This hubris scares the crap out of me. Either that or it shows the desperation they had in regards to our DL not having a legit rusher. Either way, terrible process.

              • GerryG

So true. Every time I hear that I think “this is not helping matters”

            • Gohawks5151

PC’s optimism set Taylor up for failure. It has been some time but I remember another Seahawks site interviewed a surgeon on how long the recovery for that injury takes and he said a year. Knowing that he was not going to play would have sucked but it wouldn’t have strung the player and fans along either. Plus it seems Taylor may have/had some issues trusting his body after the injury. The mental aspect takes some time as well.

              • cha

They seemed to point to the VMAC visit like they had some information other teams didn’t.

The problem with that logic is, other teams would/should have been really scared off by a major injury/surgery combined with not being able to schedule a visit to examine him. Wouldn’t shock me if several teams took him off their board.

The Seahawks should have been able to let him slip down the board and then pounce later in the draft, instead of feeling the need to reach.

                • Roy Batty

I’m just hoping that if he does show up at camp, the coaches don’t pull the Tedric Thompson/Jaron Brown “”He’s crushing it in practice” BS. Then game day he looks like it’s his first day on an NFL field.

                  • GerryG

Regardless of what they say, dont forget: he’s a rookie, who will be nearing 2 years since playing, and never really dominated against top SEC talent. Expect zero from him next year.

    • SpennyDunks

Thats the best and deepest the DL has looked in years. Hopefully Green can get us a 6th/7th lottery ticket. All predicated on bringing back Dunlap. Otherwise the pass rush looks similar to last year when they thought Mayowa and Irvin could be the answer.

  6. BoiseSeahawk

Glad they’ve finally gotten started in the trenches, but we still need Dunlap.
What are the chances we sign him now? 50/50? Less?

Assuming we get him back, mocking the draft was just slightly easier with 3 picks:

Round 2 Pick 24: Javonte Williams, RB, North Carolina (would be lucky at this spot)
Round 4 Pick 24: Ben Cleveland, OG, Georgia
Round 6 Pick 23: Olaijah Griffin, CB, USC

I think the hawks should consider Olaijah Griffin on their board. He will be available late and has huge upside as a former 5 star recruit.

    • Rob Staton

I wouldn’t hold out any hope that Javonte Williams will last to 56.

      • BoiseSeahawk

    • Ryan

The draft clues always irritate me. Hopefully they’re just random stuff – But you shouldn’t zero in so tightly on just one player that you have the ability to tweet out clues to his identity before the draft. Let the draft come to you, take the best player available at that time. Have contingencies. Stop it, Pete.

    • Michael Dinn

Pete’s clue means there will be a ton of undrafted free agents because they’ll be shopping in the Thrift Shop due to a lack of picks….

      • 12th chuck

I was going to say how much this comment made me laugh, but in the long run, kinda makes me sad 🙁

  8. UkAlex6674

Lots of doom and gloom surrounding Taylor and the pick at the moment. But just look at Jaylon Smith who was drafted injured by the Cowboys in 2017 I think. That’s panned out very well for him and them. I’m just trying to say let’s not shut the door on Taylor just yet.

    • Rob Staton

Come on Alex, those are very different situations.

There’s not one thing that is comparable to the two players apart from the fact they were injured.

This is no different than making a direct comparison to Malik McDowell.

    • God of Thunder

Good point re: the Jaylon Smith situation. Let’s look at this reasonably. All injuries, indeed all players and their situations, are unique. But there are patterns. Both Smith and Taylor were big guys on defence, touted as potential first rounders, with Smith having star upside, drafted by teams who knew 1) there’d be a delay before they got into the field and 2) there’d be questions about these players reaching their pre injury potential.

Smith blew out his knee (ACL and LCL) in the Fiesta bowl but opted in to the draft. The Boys took a flier on him in rd 2, knowing he would miss substantial time. The Boys had their doctor work on the knee. That’s important. He would’ve seen the damage.

Without reading too much into different injuries to different humans, it’s always encouraging to see a player miss an entire year, and debut as a good pro. Let’s hope it happens to Taylor!

      • Rob Staton

It’s not a good point though — and I mean that with the greatest respect to the both of you.

Jaylon Smith’s situation — in every single way — was different.

The only thing they have in common is they both suffered serious injuries.

Did Smith have a plate in his leg? No. Did Smith have reservations about practising? No, if anything he rushed back too quickly.

Nothing about the two scenarios is similar.

        • God of Thunder

          Fair enough.

I’ll add too that sports medicine has progressed greatly over the last decades re: knees — because they are such a common injury. In that too, the Smith situation is different. Known quantity and all that.

Are writers just recycling the point last year and connecting it with Russ wants more roster input?

Or has Russ actually renewed his pursuit of AB?

    • Rob Staton

This all seems to be based on John Clayton speculating something on a non-Seattle radio station.

But John’s never, ever wrong or inaccurate. Very much a ‘fine details’ man…

  11. Seattle Person

I think we have all been critical of our team and how they’ve operated. It was justified to do so! Part of it was just how bad last off-season was when they had a lot resources to make the team better. If they had poured those resources into players that really helped the team and couple that with solid additions this season, we would have been in a better position. I do like most of their moves so far. They have been solid additions but I’m like most here, they need to do more! Go for it! Bring Sherm home. Go get Dunlap. For me this is the only way to justify Jamal Adams still being on the team. Or else, it makes total sense for me to trade him and think about the future.

  12. Rob Staton

    Three-round mock draft tomorrow.

    I’ve never done a three-rounder before.

      • Hoggs41

That was my first thought as well Lewis. At this point we may have no other options to grab a draft pick. 3,4,4 and 7 is probably better than 2,4 and 7.

    • Sea Mode

I enjoyed the video formats where you used the PFN simulator picking for all the teams and explained each pick there.

Somehow getting both Williams and Meinerz would be a fantastic start. If they want to run the ball, get a stud RB and stud C. Let teams try to take the run away so we can throw bombs to DK. Pretty easy, really. As with most systems – if you have the horses. Williams and Meinerz would give this offense zero excuses. The depth would be pretty good. I’d be excited. But we’re probably going to roll with Carson and Penny and wonder where it all went wrong when Carson misses a month and Penny does something stupid.

    The other shoe drops

Isaiah Wilson involved in high speed chase, with drugs in his car, in January.

    https://twitter.com/theMMQB/status/1374770409472675843

    • CaptainJack

I feel bad about him. Obviously has some serious mental health issues involved. A healthy person doesn’t just throw their multi-million dollar career away like this. CTE?

    • dcd2

Sheesh. Quick fall for a 1st rounder. SDB was pretty hyped about him too. Glad we dodged that one.

    • Jhams

Really highlights what a crapshoot the draft is, and how selective people’s memories can be. Every time I see someone say “I said we should’ve taken Nick Chubb/TJ Watt!” I always think “Sure, but you also said we should take Isaiah Wilson too.”

      • cha

We don’t have access to players, coaches and scouts.

We just have trends, draft habits, profiles, some random internet interviews, and some tape to study.

I think this site does as well as anyone out there with that comparatively limited info.

The Seahawks’ recent misses like the two you speak of, were the results of the Seahawks going against their profile (Penny over Chubb), and taking a massive character risk (McDowell over Watt).

        • Jhams

That’s kind of my point though. That and the bias of remembering the times you (collective you here) are right and forgetting when you’re wrong. It just really irritates me when people use the “I said they should’ve took TJ Watt” line like it proves how smart they are.

      • Sea Mode

Yeah, but I don’t feel that’s totally fair. Everyone knows that, as internet draft junkies, we are not privy to the medicals or the character information that teams have (or are expected to have…) on different prospects. We can just go off of what we hear about for that and the rest of our evaluation is based solely on athletic traits and game film.

Isaiah Wilson was a case of a beast of an athlete/player. Zierlein said teams only had a few minor red flags on him, but nothing serious. Case in point is that he was indeed selected in R1 by an NFL franchise. I mean, if not even they knew, how were we supposed to know?

Chubb and Watt misses are criticized because we chose lesser athletes/players/dudes over them when it was clear enough for most of us to see this was the case.

The moves yesterday are playoff moves; keeps them in the hunt for a playoff spot, if things fall their way then an NFC West banner. Won’t take them past 2nd round of playoffs though.

In order to push for SuperBowl, they must add Dunlop (or Aldon Smith), Sherm (or similar), a 3rd WR and ideally resign KJ.

Bottom line… decent moves yesterday, but not near enough.

  19. CaptainJack

Aldon Smith is a free agent again… yes or no?

        • Sea Mode

I read teams (even the Cowboys) are worried about his “issues”. If even the Cowboys are worried, I’m not sure we want to open that can of worms…

Smith, 31, earned reinstatement last offseason and signed on a one-year deal to play for Dallas in 2020, where he participated in all 16 games and totaled five sacks.

At season’s end, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, “It’s inspirational to see a man like Aldon Smith have the comeback here that he had. … and we want him to build on it to the benefit of the Cowboys.”

That comment has caused some media outlets to report that Dallas is still trying to bring back Smith, and it’s caused other outlets to suggest that the recent signing of edge-rusher Tarell Basham is the reason Smith isn’t a Cowboy. Those reports are wrong; people who know Smith are concerned about his “issues,” not about him re-upping in Dallas … or, for the moment anywhere else.

In roughly 6 NFL seasons… he has over 52 sacks. What could have been with this guy…. he could have given the top sack artists a serious run for their money. We’ll never know…. along with him missing out on 100M or more in earnings during his career, due to missing so much time on suspension (etc).

I don’t have much hope that this will happen, but I think if they found a way to bring in playoff Lenny(possibly trade Penny), Antonio Brown(gives us a great #3 that wouldn’t have a problem being the 2 if an injury occurs) and Dunlap, KJ and Sherm to the defense, it would be a pretty successful free agency. Trade Adams for a 1st or 2 seconds. Maybe bring in Hooker. Could have a pretty potent offense and get some more intensity and leadership out of Sherm on the D.

  25. Matt

Great work Rob…wow, is this depressing. So many amazing options that would have dramatically changed the outlook of the future – but we wanted a blitzing strong safety who can’t cover, instead.

    Great mock nonetheless.

Unfortunately, it is what it is. If we could get Menierz I would be happy.

Not a bunch of new information, just some logical reasoning on the RW situation.

      And a colleague of Schefter.

The simple fact is the Seahawks have kept their options open by not re-doing his deal. Either for this year or next.

The situation remains fluid — regardless of what others might say, or whatever Wilson tweets.

  32. Blitzy the Clown

It’s so hard to mock Seattle this offseason what with only 3 picks and the expectation that they’re going to have to get back into the draft somehow.

But if they don’t and still manage to come away with Meinerz I’d be very happy. I love the guy even if I wasn’t aware of him until Senior Bowl week. Thought he was one of the true OL standouts there. Everything I’ve seen of him since, in particular Rob’s interview, only reinforces my opinion of him.

I also really like Ben Cleveland, but since they signed Gabe Jackson, I think Meinerz is the better choice between the two.

  33. Ryan Purcell

What do we think Diggs might be worth in a trade? 4th rounder? 5th? He was a pro bowler last year. It seems like he might be able to be moved without too much drop off. We have Blair and Amadi.

    • Rob Staton

Why trade the cheaper, better fit safety when you get so much more to get out of paying your blitzing box safety $18m a year?

      • Ryan Purcell

I have read your reasoning and think you have argued your point convincingly! I can’t disagree with you. But I don’t think it’s necessarily going to happen, so I’m looking at other scenarios. We do seem to have a lot of safeties. Trade Diggs, drop 6 mill from the cap and gain a fourth?

        • Rob Staton

          I wouldn’t trade Diggs, no

          • Ryan Purcell

Fair enough. I do think trading Diggs is a possible low key move the Seahawks could make, freeing up cap and adding a pick. (And they’ve made plenty of low key moves this free agency.) I’m also trying to get you one more draft pick to play around with!

            • Rob Staton

I just don’t see the gain from losing a player who fits as well as Diggs does in Seattle.

The answer for a trade is obvious. It’s just whether they’re willing to pull the trigger and make the right decision to not pay a box safety $18m a year.

      • Mike

There wouldn’t be a single team in the nfl that would say diggs is better than adams.

        • Rob Staton

And when did I make that claim Mike?

The comments section has been very frustrating the last 24 hours. I feel like I’ve had to respond to a lot of people not reading what I’ve typed

        • Big Mike

I’ll say flat out Diggs is better as a fit for the Seahawks and he’s getting what 5 mil per while 53rd ranked will be at 18 per minimum?

    • cha

The Lions shopped him with 3 years on his contract and the best they could get was a 5th – and they threw in a 7th to complete the trade.

He’s worth more to the Seahawks than they’d get back in trade.

      • Gohawks5151

Diggs did pick up a Pro Bowl nod since then so maybe the price is higher. We live in a world where Shaq Griffin got 14M a year.

        • cha

And Rodney Hudson only fetched a third round pick in trade.

If someone wants to give the Hawks a 3rd for one year of Diggs at $6m I aint gonna say no to that. But what are the chances of that realistically? A 4th even?

If it’s a 5th it is not worth making that trade.

  34. IHeartTacoma

Your mock looks great for the 49ers.

    • Gohawks5151

      • IHeartTacoma

I really like Jermar. Tough runner with some speed.

  36. Ed

Still hope for the Wilson train, it just seems by next year he is gone, so get as much as you can now. Getting 3 firsts (even mid/low firsts) and a couple of 2nds & 3rds (no aging players please) this year would be great for all parties involved. If PC is stubborn, then trade Adams, Brown and/or Wagner to at least get a few 2nds & 3rds or 4ths. If the Hawks at least do that, they can totally revamp their oline with Cleveland and Meinerz and maybe get Mills as well.

    2nd Mills
    2nd Meinerz
    3rd Cleveland

Doesn’t help the sorry D, but your Oline turns into the Cowboys line (Lewis/Meinerz/Cleveland) will not allow Donald to run free in the backfield. Ground and pound

The #Browns are hosting free agent pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney on a visit, per the wire. They tried to sign him a few times, now willl get a first look at him and how his knee has come around.

While a signing could come of this at some point, the thinking is that the #Browns pursued Clowney last year, but never really got to sit down with him face-to-face. That happens now, and we’ll see if they get together on a deal.

    • Rob Staton

Garrett + Clowney would be quite a duo

      • Michael P Matherne

Garrett + Anyone with a pulse, would be a better duo than whatever the ‘Hawks end up running out there

  38. BruceN

Great article. Like you said earlier, 30-60 seems to be the sweet spot of this draft. It’s likely JS will trade down to at least pick up one if not two more picks. I love your choice of Meinerz for the Hawks. But I’m not sure he’ll last much longer after our slot.

On a different note, there’s a rumor that Niners may be interested in Gardner Minshew. Do they dislike or not trust JimmyG (injury issues) that much? Would Minshew be a major upgrade?

  39. Julian Langdon

The more time goes bye without Seattle restructuring to create Cap space the more I think something bigger in Trade terms is coming. I don’t think it’s Russell Wilson, I think he’s set on playing for the Seahawks this year, but possibly a Wagner or Adams trade. Anything to be done with an extension or bonus restructure on an existing contract would have been done by now.

Based on Rob’s mock draft projections, if Quinn Meinerz or another top center wasn’t there at #56, I’d definitely pivot to another high ceiling, position of value player in the trenches, D’Ante Smith. Next year we’ll need to replace or re-sign both offensive tackles. It’s a position that is expensive in free agency and rarely filled adequately by a rookie. Seattle need to lay the groundwork this year and draft a player such as Smith who shows all the traits of being a successful Tackle in the NFL. The Seahawks will then have a player that can acclimatise at swing Guard / Tackle this year and move over to Tackle as a starter next.

      Well here’s an idea…

Let’s establish what those terms are. Then let’s establish whether they will be met. And then let’s make a call on who he plays for in 2021.

      Simple.

    • Jordan

I see an awesome season of sustained success for Russ and the offense in 2021. Just my prediction.

Could result in losing Waldron after 1 year though.

    • Big Mike

“hearing Wilson’s concerns” and working to meet them are two entirely different things. If I hear Carroll is letting Russ and Waldron take care of the offense, even “for the most part” I’ll be encouraged. Until then, I see it as Carroll’s typical “I can get them back on board” thought process. How did that work out with guys like Thomas, Bennett, etc.?

  41. Ryan

I just hate seeing Mond’s name linked to the 49ers. Anywhere but there.

Ignorance is bliss, especially trying to project a rookie QB. I’d take Mond in a heartbeat. The guy has shown positive progression each and every year. He’s not Mahomey but he ain’t chopped liver either. I would love for Seattle to take him and teach him behind Russ.

  45. Blitzy the Clown

In response to a comment in a previous thread about using a first round pick to take Mond, I said I would bet he won’t be taken in round 1. I wasn’t suggesting Mond isn’t worth a high pick, only that there are 5 other QBs who are consistently rated higher and I don’t think this is a 6-QBs-in-the-first-round draft.

But after watching Trey Lance’s pro day, I would definitely rank Mond above him. I don’t know that I would put Mond above Fields (yet?), although I do think he has a higher ceiling. I think he’s better than Jones, and clearly Lawrence and Wilson are the 1 and 2 of the QB class respectively. FWIW Jones reminds me of Alex Smith, and Trey Lance reminds me of Daunte Culpepper. Not sure who Mond reminds me of, maybe Steve McNair.

Anyway, I could see a team like SF buying into Mond. I think I could. There’s a lot to like with him. And if I did, then I guess pick number 12 isn’t unreasonable. Still not convinced he goes this high, but it’s possible. I don’t want to see him with Shanahan in SF regardless.

Interesting run on centers at the end of the first, and it speaks to the strength of this draft at a position that is often not addressed on Day 1. And it’s interesting where Milton Williams and Alim McNeill go because I’ve been wrestling with who I’d want more. I haven’t decided yet but I can’t stop thinking about Williams’ pro day numbers.

    Here’s a question…

Are three rounds in a mock too much?

I’ve just looked through it again and written out like this, I’m finding it hard to compute.

I’ve done far fewer mocks this year and with hindsight I’m not sure three rounds was the best idea. But I suppose it presented options still on the board — plus presented options for if the Seahawks trade down.

    • ElPasoHawk

I loved it myself and it does give some perspective of who might be available when the Hawks pick. They always seem to drop back if they have multiple players at positions of need with similar grades still available. If they don’t get more draft ammo via trade I think they will fall back with so much similar talent available. Appreciate it Rob.

    • Zxvo3

Being a huge draft fan myself, I actually enjoy having the three rounds. It could be a lot to some people, but it lets me know how you value certain prospects.

    • BobbyK

I liked it. Impressive work. The biggest downer is the Seahawks only pick once in those rounds and that’s not your fault.

      • Hoggs41

I would say it is to much unless you have the Seahawks trading out of the second round.

    • David B.

I enjoy your mock drafts. I think others stated it well. Your perspective, insight and evaluations over three rounds is both impressive and appreciated.

I think you said it all when you said “expect surprises”.

Looking forward to the seven rounder 🙂

    • DJ Half Way (Sea/PDX)

Yes. Very good. This site is for the cutting edge of Seahawk Draft Geeks (and others). You should always be shooting for too much and over the top. It is much better to provide too much information than to “dumb down” the content for the average viewer. The skimmers can just skim, and the deep divers can really enjoy your content. I do!

    • Comfect

In a draft where the Seahawks don’t pick until the 50s, 3 rounds is great. I think in a normal year it would feel like too much for the return on investment (I mean, I love more of your content, but you should save your effort!). But for this one, it’s great.

    • Mick

Three rounds are quite interesting, because we get comments on more players than one round. I’m sure it’s way more work. We also have one pick, so to make it more Seattle interesting you’d need to go two rounds anyways. Nice job!

      • AlaskaHawk

Rob – You should repackage your three round draft and sell it on the internet as “Secret Draft Formula Reveals Team’s Picks”. It can be your lucrative side hustle.

    • CaptainJack

      Any guesses who will bite?

      • Blitzy the Clown

Depends on the price. But I gotta think they’re bidding against themselves by letting this leak. Though it’s not like it was a well kept secret to begin with.

I actually like Darnold. I think he can help you win games. He won’t win you games on his own, but give him a decent supporting cast and he can be effective.

If Seattle got a reasonable offer for Wilson (min 3 firsts and 2 seconds with the first year being high picks) then I’d part with a second round pick for Darnold, and I’d probably look to draft Mond.

        • DJ Half Way (Sea/PDX)

I think there is a better than 50-50 chance Darnold is better than Zach Wilson. This is the type of bet on potential that happens every year near the top of the draft. I say stay away from both and go with the middle, late and lower draft picks.

          • TJ

Listened to Kiper this morning on Get Up. He said that if he was coming out in this year’s draft, Darnold would be the 2nd player picked. I don’t pay much attention to Kiper’s predictions, other than for nostalgic entertainment, but I thought it was an interesting comment.

            • THeOtherJordan

The point though is some other coach or GM likely thinks the same thing. So the question is does Pete or John? Because if they do and the Jets are trading him then the next several weeks until the draft are going to get really interesting. And Seattle will be right in the middle of it.

              • Michael P Matherne

Do people have a career arc comp in mind for Darnold? Do we have any solid examples of a QB who has performed this poorly with his first team and then went on to be more than a good backup/below average starter?

I figure the best case scenario is if Darnold is the next Alex Smith. He can get you into the playoffs if everything around him is excellent, but that’s about it. Maybe you can get his Int% down, but he’s never gonna throw 30 TD’s.

                • cha

                  Tennehill

                  • Michael P Matherne

I guess that’s a decent comparison, but Tannehill was much better in Miami than Darnold has been in New York. I think Tannehill got kind of a bad rap in Miami, if you look back at his stats there it’s obvious he could be pretty darn good (2 years with +66% comp and 3 years with 24+ TD; Darnold has not sniffed these kind of stats in his career yet).

    • Scot04

      The Bears become a reality
If the price for Darnold is a 2021 3rd from the bears, or a 2022 2nd from the Bears.
      Then Bears get Wilson
      Seahawks gets 2021 picks 20&52, the a 2022, 2023, & 2024 1st on Day of draft.

Be tough to turn Down Darnold, 4 1sts and a 2nd…

      • Blitzy the Clown

I think it’ll take at least a 2021 2nd round for Darnold. But your premise still holds. I’d take 4 first round picks and Darnold for Wilson, as long as the 2021 first rounder is top 15.

        • Scot04

If you’re holding out for a top 15. There won’t be a trade. None of the 4 teams have that to offer.
          I think Darnold for a 2021 3rd is realistic. Maybe the Bears do a 3rd and a 2022 5th. Maybe a player and a pick for Darnold.
Just depends how bad they want Wilson.
So pick 20&52 plus 3 more 1st round picks works for me. Will be interesting

          • Roy Batty

I wonder how much cap the Bears will have in 2022 if this went down? They pushed a lot of Mack’s money into the future and will have their tops picks completely depleted. The Oline isn’t good and there won’t be any day 1 picks to help. Russ could be going into a meat grinder. Add the fact that it tends to get cold in Chicago and Green Bay. I would curious how many sacks Russ accumulates his first year?

  49. Justaguy

I’m going to be so sad when he goes to SF for a day 3 pick. He’s worth that as just a backup. Throw them Green for The Stache.

I get that the optics are bad for us trading for him, and it would create its own media sideshow. If you’re keeping the door open by not doing anything with RW’s deal, go ahead and make your contingency. Maybe it gets RW to open up his list?

I realize it very likely won’t happen. They seem to be drooling all over yet another NYJ player that is going to cost too much instead.

  53. TheOtherJordan

I don’t care what the tweets say. I think there is a greater possibility today that Russell Wilson gets traded then there has been at any other point thus far. Especially if the Jets have settled on Zach Wilson and trading Darnold. There’s too much smoke connecting the Seahawks with Darnold among NFL insiders.

One thing is very clear, the Seahawks are open to it. They could have done two things which are dead giveaways that he’s staying to put the rumors to rest. They could have restructured his contract or done the PR dog and pony show with Pete and Russ that Russell is our QB and we aren’t trading him. They’ve done neither. If Schneider has done his analysis and feels Darnold has as much upside as any QB in the draft not named Lawrence and he can convince Pete of that then this might actually happen. The issue could be that Seattle or more specifically Chicago isn’t the only bidder for Darnold.

    • Bigsteviej

A problem with Darnold is that he’s going into the fourth year of his rookie contract. The Seahawks would have to decide in early May whether to exercise his (now guaranteed) fifth year option, which they’d obviously have to do if they’d traded for him. That’s all before they have a chance to see him in training camp, much less in real game action. Or maybe they sign him to a multi-year contract. Either way it’s a pretty big commitment to a player who’s never played a down for them, in the game’s most important position.

      • TheOtherJordan

It’s a fair point and I don’t disagree. The only thing I would add though, when dealing with the QB position in the NFL today whatever move you make, it will be costly. The bears gave Andy Dalton 10 million a year. The 18 million to exercise the 5 year option on Darnold even if you do it blind is the cost of doing business in the NFL today at the QB position.

I think as Seahawks fans we’ve been spoiled by the certainty that Russell has provided at the QB position. If we trade him we are going to have to accept there is a level of uncertainty and risk we’re just going to have to accept.

        • cha

$18million is a pittance. That’s not bad at all and worth every penny to get 2 years’ worth of looks at Darnold.

          • dcd2

But it’s 2 years, $28M and a 2nd rounder to ‘get a look’. It’s a small price for a franchise QB, but Darnold hasn’t shown he’s that. For Sam, I wouldn’t call that a pittance.

Maybe relative to what the Rams gave up for Stafford, it’s chump change. Relative to Minshew it’s a fortune, and you get 2 years to look at him without having to make an $18M decision sight-unseen.

From the sounds of things, the FO truly believes in Darnold as a potential heir apparent. I haven’t heard any mention of Minshew except from us.

            • Rob Staton

One thing people need to remember here though is there’s a reason many teams thought Darnold was the best player in the 2018 draft and why Minshew went in R6.

Darnold is not some bum. I’ve studied him in NY. He might never be elite but $14m a season for two years to take a look is not breaking the bank.

              • dcd2

I agree with you there. The people who do this for a living seem to have been or in some cases still are enamored with the prospect of Darnold. I’m no QB scout, but I know he’s thrown almost as many picks as TD’s in 3 years. A lot of that has to do with his situation, but he doesn’t come across to me as a top 10-15 QB.

Trubisky was a #2 pick. Josh Rosen was a top 10. Dwayne Haskins top 15. Some guys don’t pan out at all. I wouldn’t lump Darnold in with these ‘busts’, but I wouldn’t put him head and shoulders above many starters in the NFL either.

Just seems like if we go the route of building the way Pete wants it, that a 2nd rounder and $14M/year is kind of doing things like they’ve been doing them. It’s a half measure. Not committing to a cheap QB and not committing to a great one. Just getting an average guy and paying him average money.

            • cha

              We’re talking about Quarterbacks here.

              A 2nd round and $28m absolutely is a pittance for a look.

              • dcd2

Fair enough, I disagree. Use the 2nd rounder on David Mills and keep the money while gaining control for 3 more years. That is a pittance for a nice long look in my opinion.

                • Scot04

PC will want a QB he can compete with this year

                  • dcd2

That’s what Minshew would be for IMO. If Mills beats him out, great – 2012 reboot.

If we trade RW, how competitive are we really going to be? We’ll have $50M going to QB in Darnold + dead cap.

Minshew/Mills may not be better, but it would let you sign Dunlap for the same cost, and have two QB’s to fight it out.

      • lil’stink

I think if they made a move for Darnold they would also draft a rookie QB.

    • lil’stink

I can’t help but feel that as long as we haven’t restructured Wilson’s contract then PCJS are still open to trading him, but it might not happen until draft day.

the Jets have our R1 in 2022… why aren’t they doin everything they can to replace Wilson with Darnold?

    • GoHawksDani

Imagine them trading Darnold an their 2021 R2 for our R4 pick 😀 Just to cause media drama and potentially drive RW out of SEA so they can get a top15 pick next year from us 😀

  56. CallMeAL

Wow, really great interview with Quinn Meinerz! I really hate watching these videos as you see a guy like this and really like him and if the Seahawks have a chance to get him, they pick someone else. To many disappointments over the years.

Just looked on Overthecap.com and realized the Seahawks are really limited on guys they can restructure/extend for cap saving purposes. I don’t believe they will restructure RW and don’t think Wagner makes a lot of sense. Looks like it really comes down to Lockett or Brown and then there’s Brown’s age.

It really feels like some kind of a trade or trades are coming. They are over the cap, but still appear to be after Dunlap as well as in on other players.

Should be an interesting next few weeks!

  57. Blitzy the Clown

So, Jayson Oweh ran a 4.40 40yd and jumped 11’2″ in the broad at PSU pro day 👀

Oh and Micah Parsons ran a 4.39.

    • Rob Staton

These are the pro day numbers though.

      Add 0.06 to these times.

      And Oweh’s tape is…. ouch

      • Blitzy the Clown

No doubt but still pretty fast. And still an impressive broad jump. Oweh is this year’s looks like Tarzan plays like Jane.

        • Bigsteviej

Exactly. It’s not easy to name many players who were great combine athletes but who lacked production in college who then went on to stellar NFL careers.

    • dcd2

How serious are Micah Parsons ‘off field’ concerns?

Are we talking about the hazing – where he threw water on a player that was sleeping, then had gatorade thrown on him, and he punched/choked the other? I think the other kid pulled a knife on Parsons.

      Was there something else?

A pro day result I like a lot – and the subject is a likely round 3/4 pick. I’m amazed a 262-lb athlete can put up this kind of #’s. Also, pass rush need could be potentially satisfied with an early day 3 pick, sounds pretty good to me. This guy has sleeper written all over him. As an FCS prospect he’s perhaps a little more of a developmental type of prospect that should benefit greatly from NFL coaching & a proper conditioning programs. His physical traits seem to be exceptional as well as his “man among boys” FCS production.

    EDGE-Elerson Smith, No. Iowa: 6-064/262, 33-1/4“-arms, 83“-wingspan, 10-1/5“-hands, 4.74 40, 26- reps, 41.5″ vertical, 10′-7″ broad, 7.00 3-cone @ pro-day. **2019 stats: 60 tackles, 21.5 TFLs, 14 sacks, 14 QB hurries and five forced fumbles. The 14 sacks are the fourth most in the FCS and the 21.5 TFLs rank sixth & the 5-FF was 1-st. in the FCS.

    • JimQ

Another “sleeper” I like for a potential Round-7-ish pick, with pretty darn good pro-day #’s and great small school production #’s. Many boards show him as Rd-7 or UDFA selection = nice opportunity for Seahawks.

      TE(& punter)-Zach Davidson, Central Missouri: 6′ 6 5/8″, 245 lbs, 9 1/2″ hand, 32″ arm, 77″ wingspan, *4.64 40*, 17 bench, 37.5″ vertical, 9′ 9″ broad, 4.26 shuttle, **6.95 3-cone** – @ pro-day. He should be considered more of a WR/hybrid & H-back that could contribute as a moveable chess piece in a controlled and balanced offense.

Davidson was a Division II AP – First-Team All-American in 2019 and really cemented himself as a premier tight end in the league after scoring 15 times on 40 receptions and nearly 900 yards. But there is more to him than receiving talent. He was also an All-American Third-Team punter and averaged 40+ yards per punt on the season. Not only will Davidson’s length impress you, but his athletic ability at his size will also. While he’s still a fairly raw talent at the tight end position, Davidson offers tremendous value late in the 2021 NFL Draft as a player with loads of potential.

Again, this kid was a top level college punter as well and that adds some decent value as a B/U punter as well as his potential 22 +/- yard per catch abilities as a receiver with a high TD rate. Considering RW’s need for more playmakers he could be a viable receiver option with a late pick-IMO. So, I guess I’m saying that with only 3 picks & the OL/DL/Pass rusher needs, the 7-th round may be the place to pick some kind of pass receiver and I think this Davidson kid, even as a developmental TE, would be a good & useful outcome from a pick so late in the draft.

  70. cha

Russini: RW complimenting players. Issue isn’t players, it’s the FO.

Neither side has said anything definitive. Somebody say something!

Around league circles, RW trade can still happen. Closer to the draft is ideal.

    #77 New England — Forfeited

Shouldn’t the NFL award this pick to the Seahawks for being COVID-19 free for the 2020 season?!? Haha!

#103 San Francisco — Jemar Jefferson (RB, Oregon State)
I’ve got a feeling he could emerge as a mid-round steal.

Hopefully not for the 49rs though!!!
