Mock draft: Two rounds, multiple trades

Time for a two-round mock draft that includes the Raiders trading for Antonio Brown, the Seahawks moving down twice to accumulate picks and the Broncos moving up to the #1 pick to get a quarterback…

First round

#1 Denver trades with Arizona to select Kyler Murray (QB, Oklahoma)
Murray is the most talented player eligible for the draft. The Broncos make a huge trade to get a potential superstar (if he chooses football…).

#2 San Francisco — Nick Bosa (DE, Ohio State)
The Niners get lucky and land the best defensive player and a complete pass rusher.

#3 New York Jets — Clelin Ferrell (DE, Clemson)
The Jets need an edge rusher not an interior rusher, so they go with Ferrell.

#4 Oakland — Quinnen Williams (DT, Alabama)
The Raiders snap up a player who could remind Jon Gruden of Warren Sapp.

#5 Tampa Bay — Rashan Gary (DE, Michigan)
A former #1 national recruit — teams will love Gary’s upside and he’ll go very early.

#6 New York Giants — Dwayne Haskins (QB, Ohio State)
Haskins is a bit overrated but the Giants are a good fit.

#7 Jacksonville — Dexter Lawrence (DT, Clemson)
The Jags sign a veteran QB (Joe Flacco?) and then draft a replacement for Marcell Dareus.

#8 Detroit — Jachai Polite (EDGE, Florida)
Polite plays with a relentless effort and regularly battled double teams at Florida.

#9 Buffalo — Christian Wilkins (DT, Clemson)
Wilkins will have an outstanding combine, teams will love his interviews and he’ll go early.

#10 Arizona trades with Denver and selects Devin White (LB, LSU)
Having moved down from #1 overall and acquired a bevy of picks, the Cardinals draft a rock-solid LB.

#11 Cincinnati — Jeffery Simmons (DT, Mississippi State)
If there’s one team that won’t have any issue drafting Simmons, it’s the team that selected Joe Mixon.

#12 Green Bay — Josh Allen (LB, Kentucky)
The top-five talk is a bit rich for a player who needs to be stronger. He suits a 3-4.

#13 Miami — Daniel Jones (QB, Duke)
It seems inevitable Miami will make a change at QB. The Senior Bowl is huge for Jones.

#14 Atlanta — Ed Oliver (DT, Houston)
Ed Oliver is a wonderful talent. But what’s his fit at the next level?

#15 Washington — Drew Lock (QB, Missouri)
Alex Smith’s future is uncertain but his contract is locked in. They need a cheap alternative.

#16 Houston trades up with Carolina for Greedy Williams (CB, LSU)
The Texans make a big move to solve a huge need.

#17 Philadelphia trades up with Cleveland for Raekwon Davis (DT, Alabama)
The Eagles like to be aggressive and target talented linemen.

#18 Minnesota — Cody Ford (T, Oklahoma)
He has great feet for his size. If he doesn’t work out at tackle, he’ll be a top guard.

#19 Tennessee — Jaylon Ferguson (EDGE, Louisiana Tech)
Major production, big talent — very raw.

#20 Pittsburgh — Byron Murphy (CB, Washington)
Highly competitive and gritty. Gets after the ball and hits like a rhino.

#21 Green Bay trades with Seattle to select David Edwards (T, Wisconsin)
The Seahawks traded with the Packers a year ago and history repeats here. Green Bay needs some new blood on the O-line.

#22 Baltimore — Greg Little (T, Ole Miss)
I think Little will kick inside to guard. He’s suited to the move.

#23 Carolina trades down with Houston for Taylor Rapp (S, Washington)
The Panthers reportedly want to target the safety position this year.

#24 Pittsburgh trades with Oakland for Dre’Mont Jones (DT, Ohio State)
The Raiders make a big splash and trade a first rounder plus for Antonio Brown.

#25 Cleveland trades down with Philadelphia and selects Marquise Brown (WR, Oklahoma)
The Browns select Antonio’s cousin to take his place in the AFC North and give Baker Mayfield another weapon.

#26 Indianapolis — Devin Bush (LB, Michigan)
The Colts get a speedy partner for Darius Leonard.

#27 Oakland — Zach Allen (DE, Boston College)
The Raiders get a steal to go with Quinnen Williams and Antonio Brown from the first frame.

#28 Los Angeles Chargers — Jawaan Taylor (T, Florida)
The Chargers don’t have many holes and have regularly invested in their O-line.

#29 New England — Parris Campbell (WR, Ohio State)
He’s fast and explosive and might just be the kind of weapon they like in New England.

#30 Los Angeles Rams — D’Andre Walker (EDGE, Georgia)
If they don’t re-sign Dante Fowler, Walker could be a cheaper alternative.

#31 Kansas City — Jerry Tillery (DT, Notre Dame)
They need to do something to improve the defense.

#32 The New York Giants trade with Seattle to select Jonah Williams (T, Alabama)
The Giants leapfrog the Cardinals to add an (overrated) offensive lineman.

Second round

#33 Arizona — Max Scharping (T, Northern Illinois)
Some think Scharping is better than Eric Fisher was entering the league.

#34 Indianapolis — A.J. Brown (WR, Ole Miss)
The Colts see an opportunity to get value in Brown.

#35 Oakland — Albert Okwuegbunam (TE, Missouri)
It’s believed Okwuegbunam will have an outstanding combine performance.

#36 San Francisco — Johnathan Abram (S, Mississippi State)
A tone setting safety with a great attitude and leadership qualities.

#37 Seattle trades down with the Giants and selects Montez Sweat (EDGE, Mississippi State)
After trading down from #21 to #32, then from #32 to #37, the Seahawks add some picks and then some speed, length and pass rush to the front seven.

#38 Jacksonville — T.J Hockenson (TE, Iowa)
The Jags attacked the TE position a year ago and might go back for more this year.

#39 Tampa Bay — Michael Deiter (G, Wisconsin)
There’s a feeling Deiter might be the best pure guard in the draft class.

#40 Buffalo — Irv Smith Jr (TE, Alabama)
He’s basically a big slot receiver. I’m not sure he’ll be a great tester at the combine.

#41 Arizona trades with Denver and selects Noah Fant (TE, Iowa)
The run on tight ends continues. This is part of Denver’s package to move up to #1 overall.

#42 Cincinnati — Kaden Smith (TE, Stanford)
Don’t be surprised if we see a lot of TE’s go in this range. Smith might be the best.

#43 Detroit — DeAndre Baker (CB, Georgia)
He has talent but he’s small and struggles to track the ball in the air. He might last.

#44 Green Bay — Deebo Samuel (WR, South Carolina)
Looks stocky but has surprising quickness and he’s a great returner.

#45 Atlanta — Brian Burns (EDGE, Florida)
Burns is immensely talented but if he weighs 225lbs how can he go in round one?

#46 Washington — Chauncey Gardner-Johnson (CB, Florida)
Great competitor, great personality. Boom or bust as a playmaker.

#47 Carolina — Damien Harris (RB, Alabama)
Why not have a fantastic compliment to Christian McCaffrey?

#48 Miami — Gerald Willis III (DT, Miami)
Had an outstanding 2018 with major TFL production. He’ll excel in the short shuttle.

#49 Cleveland — Andre Dillard (T, Washington State)
Some scouts reportedly see Dillard as the best pass-blocker in a weak tackle class.

#50 Minnesota — Christian Miller (LB, Alabama)
If they lose Anthony Barr in free agency, Miller could be a replacement.

#51 Tennessee — Trayvon Mullen (CB, Clemson)
It is not a good corner class. Mullen has the potential to go in this range or earlier.

#52 Pittsburgh — Rodney Anderson (RB, Oklahoma)
A first round talent who lasts because he’s recovering from injury.

#53 Philadelphia — Benny Snell Jr (RB, Kentucky)
A really physical runner who has enjoyed a couple of great years in the SEC.

#54 Houston — Kris Boyd (CB, Texas)
The Texans double-dip at corner after a nightmare 2018 season at the position.

#55 Houston — Colton McKivitz (T, West Virginia)
He’s not as athletic as team mate Yodney Cajuste but he’s more consistent.

#56 New England — Jordan Kunaszyk (LB, California)
A good combine could launch the physical Kunaszyk up the boards. He ran a 4.29 short shuttle at SPARQ.

#57 Philadelphia — Kelvin Harmon (WR, NC State)
The Eagles might lose two receivers in free agency (Jordan Matthews & Golden Tate).

#58 Dallas — Deionte Thompson (S, Alabama)
I’m not sure why Thompson is considered a first round prospect. There’s no evidence for it. He looks like a Seahawks corner convert.

#59 Indianapolis — Austin Bryant (EDGE, Clemson)
Situational rusher but he often finds a way to make a sack or TFL.

#60 Los Angeles Chargers — Jaquan Johnson (S, Miami)
A safety partner for Derwin James. Small but physical.

#61 New England — Chase Winovich (EDGE, Michigan)
He just seems destined for the Patriots, doesn’t he?

#62 Kansas City — Elgton Jenkins (C, Mississippi State)
He had a rough outing against Quinnen Williams but who didn’t?

#63 Kansas City — Te’von Coney (LB, Notre Dame)
Not that exciting to study but a good combine would help Coney.

#64 New Orleans — N’Keal Harry (WR, Arizona State)
Looks the part but can you trust him to separate and make plays?

The trades in review

1. Denver trading up for Kyler Murray
There’s no doubt in my mind that Murray is the special talent eligible for this draft and a potential superstar. The Broncos need some magic at the QB position and make a bold move involving multiple high picks to grab Murray (assuming he chooses football over baseball).

2. Houston trading up for Greedy Williams
I think Williams is a bit overrated as a top-10 lock but he is the best corner eligible in this class. The Texans need major help at the position so make a big move up the board when Williams lasts into the teens. The Panthers are willing to strike a deal because they want to move down and get better value at the safety position.

3. Philadelphia trading up for Raekwon Davis
The Eagles usually focus on the trenches and are always willing to make a big move. Davis is extremely talented with Calais Campbell-type size. Philly sees an opportunity to go up and get him.

4. Green Bay trading up for David Edwards
The Wisconsin tackle has the kind of attitude you expect from Green Bay’s O-line and could be coveted as a long term replacement for Bryan Bulaga. The two teams made a deal a year ago and the Packers might be aggressive considering they own two first round picks. Here they give Seattle their third round pick and a little more on the side.

5. Oakland trades for Antonio Brown
If it wasn’t obvious by now, the Raiders are all-in on making headlines ahead of the move to Las Vegas. What could be more headline grabbing than a big trade for Antonio Brown? They have the draft stock to make it happen. Here they give up pick #24 plus change.

6. The New York Giants trading up for Jonah Williams
If the Seahawks can get to pick #32 some teams might be keen to jump ahead of Arizona to get at what’s left of the O-line class. The Seahawks get a day three pick in the deal to help fill out their board.

What it means for the Seahawks

They trade down twice and accumulate three picks in the process (let’s say Green Bay’s third and sixth rounder, plus New York’s fifth rounder). That gives them seven picks instead of four.

With their first selection at #37 they take Montez Sweat. As noted earlier in the week, I’m still trying to work out where Sweat fits into this draft. Will teams fall for his 35.5-inch arms and dynamic speed off the edge? Or will they have concerns about his ability to defend the run and weird spell at Michigan State?

In this mock I’m pairing him with the Seahawks — a team that has always been willing to roll the dice on a certain type of player with major upside. Sweat has the length and the twitchy quickness they love. He could be a complimentary pass-rusher for Frank Clark and improve the speed up front. Clark is one of, if not the most explosive edge rushers in the league. Pairing him with Sweat’s speed could be a nice combo.

Instead of picks in rounds one, three, four and five — these trades would give the Seahawks picks in rounds two, three (x2), four, five (x2) and six. The third frame could be a good area to look at the wide receiver or defensive tackle position. They’d have three picks to target defensive backs at the start of day three (their usual range for the secondary). They’d also have a sixth rounder.

It’s still incredibly early to project what they might do on draft day — but this kind of plan makes some degree of sense. They’re not going to spend just four picks in the 2019 draft — and the only way they’ll accumulate more is by trading down from #21.

While I disagree with many of the valuations of players, I do love the trade down scenarios and landing Sweat who will make a great Leo of the Seahawks.

I haven’t seen Murray mocked anywhere else. Do you have a bead on his intentions?

    • Rob Staton

I don’t think anyone knows what he intends to do. But the fact there’s been no announcement yet, to me, suggests he’s giving it a LOT of thought and therefore is seriously considering not playing baseball after all. So we’ll see. I’d love to see him in the NFL. Incredible, incredible talent.

      • Elmer

Rob, in your opinion does drafting Sweat carry any of the same risk that was associated with drafting Malik McDowell? Most would agree that, while we would love to have a player with Sweat’s talent, we don’t need a replay of the McDowell situation.

        • Rob Staton

No they are very different personalities

        • Jonathan

Gosh, this kind of commentary is tired. Yes, Malik McDowell had questions on his effort going into the draft, but is there any correlation between that and his ATV accident? John Schneider and Malik McDowell should not be judged by a freak accident that took away the playing days of a talented, but red-flag laden athlete. It seems like people assume that everyone knew this was going to happen because McDowell had effort concerns in college, but that is just hindsight. At the end of the day, the same logic that says they shouldn’t have drafted Malik McDowell could have been applied to Frank Clark, and yet one is on the verge of the franchise tag, and one is almost out of the NFL. I blame John Schneider for a lot of misses in the draft (Christine Michael, Rees Ohdiambo, etc), but trying to say that the Hawks should have known that Malik McDowell would have a freak accident is just wrong.

  2. Mark

I’m all on board with bolstering our linebacker corps. Sweat sounds like a guy we might be able to get a bit later on, but there’s something to be said for taking your guy when he’s available.

Rob, for posterity’s sake, what are your thoughts on Trevor Lawrence and Justin Ross?

    • Rob Staton

Clearly they are immensely talented players. I think it’s a bit early to be talking about pro prospects with either. But Clemson is just a brilliant teaching school developing great athletes that are technically intelligent. So I won’t be surprised if they achieve greatness.

  3. SamL

Great mock draft, it’s nice to read something that actually makes sense. I just saw a mock draft on bleacher report that didn’t have dexter Lawrence or Christian Wilkins going in the first wich is absurd. Another possible place for brown to land is green bay. The dont have much after Adam’s and they have two firsts and is the kind of thing that would get packer fans excited after a rough season.

    • Rob Staton

My advice to everyone would be — if you see a mock with Lawrence and Wilkins dropping into the late first or second round, click off that tab pronto.

    • Volume12

Wilkins will go early. Not many guys return to school to bolster their stock and it actually happens. Kudos to him for accomplishing that.

Lawrence won’t. He’s a pure run-stuffer who offers very little in the pass rushing department. Those guys aren’t top 15 picls.

      • Rob Staton

Lawrence has an exceptional chance to go in the top-15.

He’s not just a run stuffer. We’re talking about a freak athlete here. He ran a 4.61 short shuttle and a 5.00 forty in high school at 6-5 and 335lbs for crying out loud. Marcus Davenport ran a 4.41 short shuttle at the NFL combine at 264lbs. He was considered 1b to Rashan Gary’s 1a in the entire country for his recruiting class. He has exceptional quickness and agility for his size. Rare mobility. And he carries his weight superbly. He’s now up to 350lbs and looks even quicker now than he did before he got to Clemson.

How many 350lbs defensive tackles get 7.5 TFL’s in a season?

Vita was a #12 pick. Danny Shelton was the #12 pick.

        #12 is Dexter Lawrence’s floor.

        Top-10 is highly likely.

Since we are talking trades, an interesting article popped up proposing a traded of Mike Tomlin for some draft capital. I think he should move on, his message is not reaching the team anymore and he has lost some in the locker-room.

I agree Seattle will trade down, but I’m not sure how far they will want to slide down the draft?

If they slide out the 1st round, then they lose the extra year of control over the draft pick…. and if an EDGE or DE or OLB hits, they will be sitting pretty when the contract could become BIG NUMBERS.

(I’m still in shock the Bears went out in the first round)

    • Rob Staton

To be fair they’ve not shown much interest in that extra year of control in the past.

  5. Pickering

Great mock. Thanks. With so many new coaches around the league it will be interesting to see how this year’s quarterbacks’ group will be looked at and how many go earlier than thought. And with McCough not getting a future contract (not yet, at least), and Hundley a UFA, and making a worst (maybe, depends on perspective) case assumption that neither comes back next year, what can Seattle do to fill the qb void?

    • FresnoHawk

If they don’t sign a FA QB watch out one of our coveted picks will be used.

  6. Jake

I would be very happy if we were able to get Sweat. This team has a lot of young players that could have that big “jump” from year one to two. As for Sweat, he’s a great pass rusher who is also a good run defender which is kinda surprising considering his relatively thin frame would be a great pick up. Another move I would love to see this off season is to resign K.J. Wright, I’m not sure how some people have such short memories on how much of an impact he makes. What he did on Saturday he’s been doing for years.

    • Eburgz

I think the hesitation is paying big money to a guy that might have a chronic knee issue. I’d love to have kk back but we’ve been burned on third contracts before and there are lots of mouths to feed. I think without the injury concerns it would be a no brainer.

I’d like to see some incentive laiden contracts for these guys with injury concerns (Wright, Sweezy, Fluker). We’d better sign one if not both of kj/Kendricks, hopefully they are relatively affordable.

  7. Coleslaw

Great piece and I would love this approach. I think you may be onto something here. Since we pretty much know they’re going to trade down, I think we could be looking harder at the guys who might fall. Sweat, Simmons, Burns, Walker, Tillery are some guys who could be targets in this scenario. Somebody is going to fall into the 40s, maybe even 50s, it’s just a matter of how far can they trade down before ‘their guy’ goes, and finding a trade partner.

  8. HawkfaninMT

Pickering made me think of an interesting point regarding new coaches…

With all the new hirings it will be difficult to predict intentions of teams. For example with Kliff going to AZ I would be a bit surprised if they don’t go offense heavy in the draft. By the same token, he may think he can work with most offensive pieces and will be focused more intently on defensive talent.

An interesting corollary to that is the players these coaches inherit that don’t fit the system. Specifically thinking robald jones and Arians. But I’m sure there are more out there. Perhaps a blog post about the impact on both current rosters and draft predictions?

  9. Trevor

I hope the Hawks re-sign KJ and bring back Kendrick’s. They would be an awesome trio in base formations. Then if they drafted a guy like Sweat as a LEO they could use him a lot like they did Irvin early on as a situational 3rd down rusher until he develops the other parts of his game.

If Sweat has that all important sub 1.6 10yd split he is definitely one to watch.

    • McZ

I hope, they skip on Wright (because paying a lot of money for a guy with sore knees will bite us), keep Kendricks and add Ken Burr-Kirven as a late rounder.

That said, as we see small school guys falling behind in the weeks leading to the draft, I expect Zach Allen to be available at #37.

What puzzles me about Robs dract is the omission of Rashan Gary.

      • Look Who's Hawkin?

He has Gary going #5 to Tampa

      • Rob Staton

        Gary is #5

        • McZ

Awwww, how could I have missed that…. Shame on me.

      • Volume12

        Had him at #5 overall.

  10. FresnoHawk

NE has the 73rd pick and two 3rd round compensation picks this year and the more 1st round OT’s & QB’s increases our opportunity to trade back. Also 2016 we traded back twice and got 4th round Tedric on the 2nd trade. We have more 1st round capital this year so I would mock a top 10 3rd and top 10 4th.

  11. Mac

Trevor Lawrence is a bad man. Ive been watching his tape on rivals since the videos were posted up. He has the highest ceiling of any qb I’ve seen in a long time.

  12. C=Dog

    Now we are having fun!

Great looking draft, Rob. I think we have to anticipate that, with only four picks, Seattle is likely going to be busy trading back. Montez Sweat makes a lot of sense at this point of time.

I believe Pete Carroll was a part of the Vikings staff when they took Chris Doleman in the 1980’s. He was a long lean pass rushing LB coming out of Pitt and converted to DE. With Sweat’s long frame and twitchy production, it wouldn’t shock if Carroll’s thinking is 3rd down specialist year 1 and then with added weight, work his way into a starter down the line.

Doubt the Seahawks would have any interest in Greg Gains. And third round is much earlier than he’ll go. Don’t think Montgomery lasts that long, and another RB pick doesn’t make sense. There’s depth in the UDFA and FA to add someone.Disagree about Hyatt, he’s better as a tackle and probably 3rd-4th rounder.

I do agree that we should double dip on DL. Pete and John need to take advantage of this years draft strength

      • C-Dog

Disagree on Gaines. I think he fits what they tend towards at DT and can easily see him go Day 2.

    • jujus

I really like what you have put together here

  13. Eburgz

Thanks for the mock rob. This one looks like it has a lot more variety in positions drafted. I agree Wilkins is too good to last as long as he does in a lot of these mocks but wouldn’t he be the prefect seahawk? On a side note, Clayton said on the radio today that Tampa Bay was going to draft Greedy Williams at 5 as if it was a done deal.

With Naz moving to defensive end (I’d assume primarily on base downs) it would make sense to draft a situational pass rusher for sub packages on money downs. Considering his weight do you see Sweat as a 3 down player or just a LEO type pass rusher early in his career? I’m hoping for Jake Martin to take the next step in that situational pass rusher role (Queem too hopefully) but you can never have too many pass rushers I suppose. If Sweat runs a fast 10 yard split like expected he sure looks like a guy with the tools, production and motor the hawks covet.

You mention concerns in the run game, I’m hesitant to add another weak run defender on the edge where we have had issues stopping the run. He probably won’t be asked to play on “run downs” (if there is such a thing anymore) as a rookie and hopefully he could develop in that area and add bulk to be a 3 down player, his length should be a huge benefit in the run game. He does look good in the run game to me in the limited stuff I’ve seen from him but the NFL is a different beast.

A similar player that’s available in your mock is Brian Burns who I think I prefer at this point. Burns doesn’t look as good in the run game to me but also seems like a much more nuanced (or refined or whatever you want to call it) pass rusher if pass rush is what we’re going for. He wins in a variety of ways and I think he would provide a bigger impact from day 1 & he has a nose for the ball. He doesn’t look as powerful as sweat but he isn’t as filled out either. Where you see “too light, red flag” I see untapped potential to get bigger and more powerful. These guys always get bigger with nfl weight and nutrition programs (steroids?) and burns has more room to grow into his frame I think. I see burns as more of a technician and sweat as possibly a better ball of clay. It will be interesting to see how these guys test. Seahawks seem to prefer the better ball of clay and trust themselves to coach guys up. Who do you prefer assuming burns can add some weight and retain his explosiveness? Or do you think he’s just too light and might always be.

    • Rob Staton

If you’re worried about run defense, Burns would be a bad idea. He apparently weighs in the 220lbs. Good luck defending the run at that size.

Clayton has no idea who the Buccs are going to draft. He’s probably just offering a suggestion.

      • Eburgz

I acknowledged that in my post. I envision them playing him in a role similar to Jake Martin this year or Bruce Irvin his rookie year. Using him in clear passing situations and minimizing his exposure to the run.

I’m assuming he can gain some weight and strength considering his frame. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him show up at the combine at a similar weight to Sweat at 245. It might take longer than that but 20 pounds isn’t out of the question. I suppose you could say Sweat could pack on 20 also, but he’s more filled out than Burns to my eye. Your right 220s is too small for an edge defender. We’ll see how they measure up and test at combine.

My preference would be a guy like Zach Allen but he isn’t available in this mock where we pick.

        • Rob Staton

Why assume Burns is going to add weight though and imagine he’ll be fine in the long run — but a guy like Sweat who is already 20lbs heavier won’t be able to?

          • Eburgz

Well, because I didn’t assume that Sweat wouldn’t be able to put on weight. Already addressed but I’ll try again because I’m bored. I think Sweat will gain weight and needs to. Sweat has put on lots of weight in the past year and he looks more filled out to my eye than Burns. Both are lanky dudes that need to put on weight, Burns more so.

I think burns will gain weight:
            1. Because he’s 6 foot 5 inches tall and according to Twitter or someone he’s in the 220s. He looks skinny and has room to fill out. FWIW he’s listed at 235, 10 pounds lighter than Sweat.

            2. Because he needs to if he wants play the edge in the nfl, if you and I know it I’m sure he’s aware

            3. Because guys almost always get bigger and stronger in NFL programs due to multiple factors.

The big question is whether he will retain his explosivness with the added weight. I like Sweat a lot. I think Burns is the more technically refined pass rusher and I prefer him if we’re looking at pass rushing specialists (which they would probably both be used as early in their careers)

      • HawkfaninMT

Should we be expecting a move back to the days of Red Bryant at 5-tech with Clemons at Leo? I feel like that defense was effective at funneling plays, runs in particular, back towards the middle and opposite side of the field. Also helping to minimize the run defense requirements of the LB lined up behind him. For those that are clamoring for improved run defense, this seems like a viable option. I’m sure there are other posters that understand the Xs and Os of this shift better, would love to hear those comments if it seems like this is the base front that they will be moving towards.

        • Rob Staton

No I don’t think so. They essentially created a role for Big Red because they wanted to take advantage of his leadership. But it was also a hindrance at times having a non-pass rushing five-technique and as soon as they won the Super Bowl, they moved on and had more conventional ends in Avril/Bennett with Clark eventually added too.

What is more likely is the addition of a Tony McDaniel type to play DT. We could see Rasheem Green used more at DE. And they might opt to bring in a big-time speed rusher. More speed is required.

    • Volume12

He’s not a weak run defender. Sweat that is. He gives a lot of effort in the run game and that length will help him tremendously when he learns how to use it.

      • Eburgz

That’s what I see on tape as well. Guessing the concerns come from his listed weight. I like Sweat. I think burns is a better pass rusher if we’re looking for pure pass rush. Burns gives good effort in the run game too but doesn’t look as powerful. Sweat probably has a better chance to become a 3 down defender IMO.

  14. David Ashton

Isn’t Michael Deiter looking to return for the Badgers?

    • Rob Staton

      He’s a senior.

He’ll be at the Senior Bowl later this month too.

      • David Ashton

My bad, must have confused him with Biadasz.

  15. Peanut

I don’t really know how my love for Washington Huskies came from, most likely that its close to Seattle, but how many are coming into this draft, and how will they get drafted? I see you have Murphy and Rapp going in the 1st round here, any chance they could fall to Seattle, and would they take them? Would love a little piece on the husky draft class in general, but won’t demand an entire piece just on one school. Maybe some Seattle native could write a guest-piece?
Anyways, Really looking forward to dive back into the draft world with you Rob, always love the posts, keep it up!

    • Rob Staton

I like both Murphy and Rapp but don’t think they’ll end up in Seattle.

    • C-Dog

In addition to Murphy and Rapp, I think DT Greg Gaines, RB Miles Gaskin, and OT Kaleb McGary should all get drafted, and then LB Ben Burr-Kriven, S JoJo McIntosh, CB Jordan Miller and TE Drew Sample all probably stand a decent chance as well.

I think there’s also a good chance Jake Browning gets drafted. I know he’s polarizing, but I think he has a pro ready skill set that could make him intriguing to a QB guru type later in the draft.

That’s 10 Huskies that could all here their names called.

    • jujus

For all of the “great players” that have came out of WA that the seahawks passed on… how many of them have been deemed great and then been great in the NFL?

Try to objectively look and see what players UW has coming out and see none of them are a talent that fits the needs of the hawks.

The NFL is hard and I personally dont see any elite talents from UW doing anything- Vita Vea imo has the best chance to be something atm but other then that King has been weak, Ross – weak, Sidney jones – weak…

      • Hawkfaninmt

I like what I’ve seen from Buddha Baker thus far in AZ. With ET moving on he would have been a nice piece to have on board.

      • Volume12

I agree with you, but Vita Vea? Really? The most redundant draft pick of 2018?

It will never not be hilarious to me that a team whose been desperate for help on their backend for years passed on an All-pro in Derwin James.

        • Rob Staton

Vita’s been hurt. He was excellent at UW. I watched him live twice and he’s a freak.

  16. Ishmael

Bruce ‘I only want to coach the Browns’ Arians is coming out of retirement to coach the Buccs. Imagine wanting to work with Jameis Winston. Although I guess he had no problems with Roethlisberger so…

It’s an interesting mock. Suspect it’s very close to what the Hawks end up doing, I don’t think they really have another option – always going to be the risk with trading future picks – dug themselves a bit of a hole. Too many needs at too many levels to do anything other than find a way to recoup picks.

    • H

Tbf, as much as I don’t like Arians much, I think it’s an excellent hire for the Bucs. Winston is his kind of no f**ks given gun slinger. I can totally see that being an excellent pairing.

  17. Mark Souza

The only part of that draft I don’t like is Joey Bosa to the Niners. Twice a year, in our division? Ouch.

  18. Ishmael

Matt LaFleur the head coach of the Packers?

McVay and the Rams have broken brains all around the NFL. Might be something to consider for future mocks, that in a defensive heavy draft a few desperate teams could fight the board to try and get at the few decent offensive players coming out.

Guys like Arians and Kingsbury are going to want toys for their QBs to play with – that’s what they were brought on to do after all.

    • Rob Staton

Possibly. But these teams might be hoping the coach is the X factor on offense. And that they can simply add defensive talent.

      • Ishmael

Totally, was just a passing thought. GMs wanting to show they made the right choice, doubling down etc. There are a lot of really dumb teams in the NFL, the tunnel vision is real

  19. millhouse-serbia

Dane Brugler mocked Isaiah Simmons to Seahawks with 21st pick in his 2nd mock draft this year.

    • Rob Staton

The Seahawks are very unlikely to draft a 6-3, 225lbs safety who is likely going to run in the 4.6’s in round one.

They’ve taken one DB early in nine drafts under Pete Carroll. Earl Thomas. They aren’t going to extend that run to two DB’s unless it’s a special, special athlete.

      • millhouse-serbia

I agree with you and it was really strange for me when I saw that pick (I have high opinion about Dane). He mocked Montez Sweat to Baltimor with 22nd, and Christian Wilkins is 19th pick. He is really high on Nasir Adderley-25th pick to Eagles.

        • Rob Staton

Wilkins is too low and Adderley way too high.

          • Morgan

There is a growing contingent of people mocking Adderley in the first…though I think it’s more of a “look at this small school guy I like!” than an actual projection. I love Adderley and he definitely looks like a Seahawks S, with excellent awareness and an eager tackler. Hard to project him without testing results though.

    • Gohawks5151

I like this kid a lot as a SS/LB hybrid dude. Excellent tackler. Not an Earl replacement at all. More of a Kam if we are comparing to Seattle. Deone Buchannon if we are looking at the rest of the league. I talked about him in another post and someone else said he was expected to time in the 4.3 – 4.4 range so take that as you will. Also i think he is a sophomore.

      • WALL UP

He’s very talented and will have a long career in the league. Adding an additional 15lb to his frame could be a natural progression for his maturity. His length is reminiscent of KJ, also in a cerebral and instinctive way. Whoever drafts him will have a better team for doing so.

  20. Sea Mode

Interesting read, Kenny and fans of the “other” football. I wasn’t aware that we had an American in La Masia. The FIFA ban certainly set a ton of kids back and created a huge hiccup in the pipeline to the Barça 1st team.
Wish this kid the best of luck moving forward.

Trayvon Mullen and Tre Lamar declare for draft.

Aaaaand:Kyler Murray is reportedly leaning toward entering the 2019 NFL Draft 👀

    Details on this week’s @sticktofootball
    https://t.co/RxjxekyPsj https://t.co/U46iDrZ9SB

    • Rob Staton

I look forward to him being mocked by everyone in the top-five in about two months.

  22. Nick

Last night I watched the Mississippi State defense. And wow, they’re a fun D to watch. Reminds me of what Florida looked like a few years ago with Jarrad Davis, Jonathan Bullard, and Marcus Maye.

Sweat seems to win (mostly) through a straight up speed rush. He has pretty good bend. Simmons is a beast and will be a top 15 pick almost certainly.

I came away seeing the number 38 quite a bit. Abrams is a fireball! Not sure if Seattle sees S as a priority position (apparently they really like Hill and Thompson). But man that dude takes great pursuit angles and tackles hard. I expect him to be a very solid starter at the next level.

    • Rob Staton

Abram is very solid. There are some athletic limitations with him but he hits hard, roams around and he’ll be a very steady pro.

      • Nick

Rob, I went back and looked at which pass-rushing DTs had high SPARQ numbers. And Jerry Tillery stood out for me. Pauline has a Rd 2 grade on him, which could put him in a nice spot for Seattle after a few trade backs.

His tape against Stanford is really exciting. I’d highly recommend checking it out, if you haven’t already. He’s got some strong hands!

        • Rob Staton

He has some really good moments and some games where he kind of disappears. Teams are going to need to work him out as a personality too. For example, he had a twitter rant calling for Les Miles to replace Brian Kelly at Notre Dame. He’s missed some time for breaking team rules. He has a bit of a temper and that’s shown up in games too. He also has a LOT of non-football interests. He’s very into the stock market and he’s travelled the world. I think he speaks Japanese. Plays the sax. Not sure teams will have met anyone like him before.

Not your typical football player in terms of personality. He’s done a lot of travelling. Very into the stock market.

  23. AndrewP

Yesterday (or perhaps Monday), Dave Wymann chimed in on Kyler Murray… said he’d heard from multiple (independent of one another) sources that Murray leaves a bit to be desired as a teammate. Interesting bit to monitor as we move along.

  24. SeahawkeyezSubj80

My prayers to the B.Mebane family and what they are going through. Rooting for you and the Chargers in this trying time!

    • Coleslaw

Oh my God that’s awful…. Just hearing about this now.. Damn…

    • C-Dog

Devastating. I will be rooting for the Chargers to win the whole damn thing.

  25. DC

With a paltry 4 picks and a clear history of trading down in the draft the only way for the Seahawks to blow our minds this year would be to make a selection at 21.

  26. whit21

I agree.. but i thought they might make their pick last year, until Derwin James came off the board right before they picked.. not sure how high on him they were, but almost the type of safety and athlete ET is.. just in a different way. Would have been interesting to see what they chose to do if he was still there, since he was expected to be off the board after pick 10..

Again this year i think it comes down to whos left when they pick at 21.. they always wait til theyre on the clock to make a trade so.. If PC believes they already have most the pieces and just need to get better.. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did pick at 21 or move back slightly like they did when Bruce Irvin was drafted. Maybe thats what they need is a few top level talents to compete and hit the UDFA hard.

    • Rob Staton

I thought he was going to land where he did. And to be honest, with no pick after round one until round four, I’m certain the Seahawks were going to trade down whoever was on the board in round one in 2018. And that’ll probably be the case again this year with only four picks.

      • Whit21

yeah, you’re right.. i think its just my wishful thinking they will stay put enough to get someone really exciting in round 1.. they have yet to do it since 2010.. I dont really count bruce irvin or rashaad penny. Decent talent but they dont really jump out at you..

  27. RWIII

Rob: Do you think it is possible the Hawks could have Sweat play linebacker on early downs. Then rush the passer on third down?

    • Rob Staton

I don’t. He’s very much a long, lean pass rusher. Wouldn’t want him working in space. At his best getting after the QB.

  28. Rob Staton

Just finished a nice long podcast with the UK Seahawkers. We discussed the Dallas game, reviewed the season, talked some draft and looked ahead.

I’ll put it on the blog when it’s published in the next day or two. Something to look out for.

    • clbradley17

Great mock and news about the upcoming podcast Rob. I heard Tony Pauline saying on a podcast recently that he wants to see Sweat put on 15-20 lbs. for the Senior Bowl and win in the one-on-one drills. How would you feel about us drafting 2 or 3 DE/LB pass-rushers in the draft? In case one or 2 lag or are injured like Rasheem Green this year, or heaven forbid, Frank Clark is injured in 2019? Wouldn’t mind seeing them get Sweat in rd. 2, Porter Gustin or Shareef Miller in 3 or 4, and/or Justin Hollins of Oregon on day 3. All are 6’5″, big and fast pass-rushers.

I know he doesn’t have the pass-rushing stats Sweat does, but if Walker of GA is available after trading down once or twice, would prefer him if he shows he has the speed at the combine. Seems like he can stop the run and set the edge better than most, and has the capability to rush the passer, but GA mainly uses him as a solid player on the edge, rather than unleashing him to rush on most downs like many other DE/LBs. He dominated in the SEC title game against Alabama.

Also heard Pauline describe safety Nasir Adderley in glowing terms such as speedy, explosive, aggressive ball-hawk etc.(nothing negative), just needs to see him perform in the one-on-ones against a variety of FBS WRs during Senior Bowl week. And he said safety Simmons of Clemson is fast and a good player, but really needs to go back to school. The last day to declare for the draft is next Tue. Jan. 15. How do you see our priorities at other positions after pass-rushing DE/LB with our 1st pick?

And if we can’t or don’t re-sign KJ, would you prefer an inside run-stuffing LB like Kunaszyk of Cal or an outside LB like Germaine Pratt of NC St. if they drop some and are available in rd. 3 or 4? Just saw at PFF that LB Pratt “Of all FBS linebackers, Pratt finished with the ninth-best run-stop percentage of 13.4% while missing just four total tackles of his 92 total tackle attempts all season long. He led all ACC linebackers with 26 QB pressures despite just 79 pass-rushes.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fa0K_hDPETk&t=2s

      • Rob Staton

I think adding multiple options up front is a possibility but it depends on whether they can move down and get up to about 7-8 picks (I think it’s a certainty they will). For me I’d like to see a FA addition or two plus a high draft pick on the DEF front seven.

I wouldn’t disagree with Tony on Adderley. The thing is, I think people tend to get a bit carried away with the small school guys sometimes. They can go very early. They can even come from nowhere and go early (eg Ali Marpet). But I watched him and saw things to like and things to pause on. So I also agree with Tony, let’s see him in the Senior Bowl. If he plays really well and has an amazing combine, then I’ll buy into the early round hype.

I think Simmons is considered ‘fast’ in the same way Deionte Thompson is. I suspect both will run slow and people will be surprised. Just my belief.

I think our off-season priorities are more pass rush, more speed, more depth on defense. They have to add at least more pass rusher if not too. I’d like to get some speed at linebacker if possible. I’d like increased competition at corner and maybe someone they think they can develop into a playmaker at either CB or S.

Kunaszyk is tough and physical but he’s going to run a slow forty so that puts me off a bit.I’ve not watched Pratt.

        • clbradley17

Thanks for all the insight Rob. I think they drafted T2 as a possible playmaker from the 7 int.s his senior season at Colorado, but that hasn’t come to fruition so far. As far as drafting 2 or more pass-rushers, I was going on the premise that JS will acquire several more picks as in your mock. Not sure what is a Tony McDaniel type? I know he was a tall 6’7″ 300 lb. run-stopper – is that what you’re referencing? Also, if we can get Walker of GA after trading back, would you think he has the skills of an edge rusher, or is it too hard to tell yet mainly going off the SEC title game where he excelled?

  29. WALL UP

Any thoughts on DE Oshane Ximines? I didn’t see him in the mock. What round do you have him rated?

    • Rob Staton

Didn’t stand out much at all when I watched him. These smaller school players really have to jump off the screen. Marcus Davenport did a year ago. We’ll see how he tests etc but not sure where the high grades came from on Ximines based on what I saw.

      • WALL UP

Thanks Rob. it is difficult to evaluate, particularly when the competitive talent level isn’t as high in those smaller schools. Perhaps the inclination is to anticipate a worthy pick to jump off the screen because it is a smaller school.

On thing for sure, he’s a great locker room leader. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=td2zvg9mYBU

  30. Jake

Has anyone seen the post from pro football focus about the Seahawks going with Mike Mcarthy as the next head coach. If this were to happened I would go into a deep depression…

    • Pickering

Is that rumor based on a Kevin Bacon six degrees of separation line of reasoning because of JS’s past connections with Green Bay?

    • Hawktalker#1

Honestly, between the options, I’d rather hear more of the “trade Russ” clammorning I hate than the prospect of hiring Mcarthy.

      • Whit21

I read that.. i think its stupid since PC already signed an extension to 2021.. it looks like he will have to wait til next season to get a job since the Jets went with Gase. But that would mean PC steps down after next season and not coach out his new extension..

    • JohnH

Meh, just Mike Florio spouting nonsense as is his wont.

  31. Jake

Rob have you heard/watched S Nasir Adderley from Delaware? Holy CATFIsh! This dude JUMPS of the screen. Small school but the looks like a 4.4 athlete on the field. Ball hawk! If the Seahawks are looking for a special athlete at safety he could be on their radar.

    • Sea Mode

Yeah, we’ve talked about him before. IMO, with him it’s important to watch the game tape. Highlights are really amazing like you say, but in the couple games I found on YT he failed to make much of an impact at all and missed some tackles.

To me he looks like a 4.5 guy, not 4.4. I like the long arms and am still interested to see more of him at the Sr Bowl against better competition, but right now I’ve cooled a bit on him and am only seeing him in the R4-R5 range.

    • Rob Staton

I thought he did some things well, others not so much. Think people are getting a bit carried away on him.

  32. WALL UP

  33. diehard82

Rob, how does Green Bay wind up with the 32 pick to trade to Seattle?

    • All I see is 12s

Rob is projecting at the saints win the Super Bowl. The Saints traded their first round pick to Green Bay during the draft last year.

    • DC

GB owns New Orleans 1st rounder this year.

    • Forty20

They own New Orlean’s 1st round pick this year from the trade for Marcus Davenport in the previous draft.

    • Trevor

NO trades this years #1 to GB in order to move up last year and pick Davenport.

  34. Trevor

Rob what are your thoughts on Raekwon Davis? Seemed to get over shadowed by Williams this year and in thought his play was a little underwhelming to be honest. That being said he looked great the year before and is an physical specimen. Do you see him as a fit with the Hawks? Might he be available at 21?

Could the Hawks play a base front 4 of Clark and Davis at DE with Ford and Reed at DT. Then in passing does move Davis inside and bring in Martin or a situational edge rusher on 3rd down?

  35. Trevor

Forget my question about Davis he just announced he is going back to Alabama. Surprised both he and Derrick Brown went back for another year. Both could be top 10 picks in 2020.

    • DC

They must LOVE the college life.

    • Volume12

Davis needs to improve his ability as a pass rusher.

Brown will probably make more more $ next year. That Auburn front with him, Nick Coe, and Marlon Davidson is gonna be lethal.

      • Trevor

Agree on both points. Brown is a beast and Davis really needs to work on his pad level and leverage as well.

  36. SamL

Just got a notification. Kyler Murray set to declare for the draft.

  37. Trevor

Kyler Murray entering the draft that is awesome!

Kliff Kingsbury when interviewed earlier this year said he was a freak and would take him with the 1st pick in the draft if he could. Well now he has the chance. Seems like a match made in heaven for Cards fans. As an organization they need something for the fan base to get excited about.

    • Rob Staton

And in a few weeks everyone else will have him in the top 10 of their mocks…

      Or at #1…

  38. Trevor

#32 Packers- David Edwards (OT /Wisc)

Hawks get lucky as Lawerence falls into their laps as an instant fix to the run defense. JS has planned to trade back but Lawrence is too good to pass teaming with Reed and Poona Ford to give the Hawks an awesome young DT rotation going forward.

    • millhouse-serbia

I think I saw tweet from Lance Zurlein that Mack Wilson won’t declare this year.

When are you coming overhere? 🙂

      • Trevor

Will be there June – September I will email you all the info once I get things finalize. I am looking forward to it.

        • millhouse-serbia

So you will come somewhere between june-september and stay for one year or you will be here from june to September?
Looking forward to meet you. If you stay here for one year we will watch championship season together. 🙂

          • Trevor

I will be there from June – September and just be traveling back and forth from the mine site. Aftet that it will depend on how things are progressing with construction but I will be back for at least 2 more shorter trips as the project advances.

I am looking forward to it and we will habrtk set something up to track training camp and preseason etc.

  39. RWIII

Montez Sweat. My question with Sweat how is he going to hold up against the run.

    • Jake

Dudes a monster! I have a feeling he’s gonna shot up draft process.

Nasir Adderley Career Highlights. Check out the one handed interception at 45 seconds.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dwOuc8K4ik

        • Sea Mode

Look, I like the kid and am not trying to bash him, but I’ll just repeat again what I said above: watch the full tape to get a better picture. Probably the biggest drop-off of anyone I can remember from highlights to game tape.

And I say this as someone who loves watching highlights to see what a player can do.

          • Morgan Goulet

Watching the NDS game I was lamenting his missing tackles, but then I started wondering if he was just maintaining lane discipline. Usually the runner was tackled by a teammate very nearby. Regardless he looks much more comfortable in space, in pass defense, than he does in the soup. He undoubtedly fights in there though, he’s almost always engaging with a blocker through the whistle. It’s a middling batch of players at the position but he’s my favorite of the bunch. Role and playstyle reminds me of Kevin Byard when he was at Middle Tenn State.

    • millhouse-serbia

Joe Marino from TDN on Adderley:

I’m not saying Adderley is a top-10 player in this class (although that’s not much of a stretch) but I am saying film is among the ten best players I will study for the 2019 NFL Draft. He is outstanding and executes at a high level.

Processing skills? Exceptional. Plays fast and aggressive while making correct reads and positioning himself to make plays. Physicality? Tone-setter on the back end. Plays with a high level of urgency, rivaling what we see from Jamal Adams. Coverage skills? Extremely sound in zone coverage and clearly understands coverage spacing. Plays the ball at a high level. Range? Sideline to sideline. Versatility? No limitations to what he can do and function at a high level. Split zones, single-high, in the box, blitzing, man coverage are all within his realm of capabilities. Interchangeable and highly versatile. Has made big plays as a punt and kick returner. Does everything.

Adderley checks a lot of boxes and does so emphatically. He was an absolute joy to study on film and is a first-round safety all day long assuming he tests where I believe he will.

    • Eburgz

That’s a nice play. This dude is getting the Jessie Bates treatment. A ball hawk who can lay the wood with legit hustle is ecactly what we could use on the back end. And he plays teams. Sea Mode, what games do you recommend watching? To be fair TT disappeared for entire chunks of the season and isn’t the best tackeler, he could be a big upgrade. Level of competition they played against is night and day but still. I also really liked Natrell Jamerson last year and he’s on his third team so what do I know.

I waited all season to see what all the training camp hype was about with Tedric. Pete said he was the best player of camp, KJ was on the radio and said that he was going to shock us and that he was picking off Russ left and right. Was this talk all bullshit? Fabricated to light a fire under Earls ass? I don’t think so but I didn’t see anything in real games to get me excited. I’d prefer we play McDougald at FS and D. Hill at SS at this point. Maybe he just wasn’t comfortable?

    • Eburgz

Did you see the Michael Deiter clips a couple back? Someone get that dude his syrup to go along with his pancakes. Looks like he would fit in really well on this OL. Big, nasty and he can move.

Looks like a great Sweezy replacement if we can’t afford both him and fluker. Or just as depth if we do sign both considering the health issues Sweezy and Fluker have had. If we got Adderley & Deiter after a couple trade backs I’d be happy as long as we address the D line in free agency.

Some thoughts from Dane Brugler on WR class.

“The opinions on this WR class are all over the map from scouts. This position more than the rest will have the most fluctuation in the rankings between now and April. Ole Miss’ DK Metcalf leads the way – he’s raw in areas, but freaky with his speed and length. Then there are a handful of WRs who will try and separate themselves the next few months. NC State’s Kelvin Harmon has outstanding play strength – is he fast enough? Arizona State’s N’Keal Harry is a power receiver who struggles to separate mid-route. Ole Miss’ AJ Brown is a natural hands catcher and natural route runner, can he live on the outside? It’s going to be a fun group to debate.”

Whoa..i just listened real hawk talk…and at the and they spoke shortly about offseason plans…
And hawkblogger said this:”I would seriously consider trading Bobby Wagner”.

Fuck no…no no…we have chance for something big in next 2,3 season, and without Bobby our chances are much much muuuch lower…it would have sense to me if we are 3-13 team who need couple years to build a new team(and it was something I spoke about last year)…but now when you need just a few defensive pieces to become a real SB contender you can not trade you QB of defense…

    • Trevor

Agree that makes zero sense and would never happen IMO.

    • Rob Staton

So Evan Hill wants Pete Carroll fired and Brian wants Bobby traded.

When did the world become one big episode of a Skip Baylis show?

      • Trevor

The desire for people to draw attention to ones self and create drama is a huge issue in society today which has been amplified by social media. Think about it a person who did exactly this was elected president of the USA. Not sure what the solution is except to just try and block it out and try to teach our kids how to live and be comfortable with who they are and to not need the attention of others to feel fulfilled or content.

      • Logan Lynch

I used to follow them on Twitter including some of the other SEA staples, but I honestly unfollowed every single one after the wild card game…except Rob of course! This year just seemed to hit an apex for some reason and it became annoying.

I agree with Trevor, all of the sensationalism going on is insane. I rarely go on Fieldgulls anymore because of it. SEA had a disappointing loss, yes. On the whole, this was an extremely successful season and the arrow is only pointing up for them. Sometimes Pete says overly optimistic things, but I honestly believe him when he says that this team has the makings of a championship core.

I’ll echo again that I enjoy this site so much because we can come on here and have rational, intelligent debates without too many “hawt taeks”. Like the one about trying to trade Penny already. Give me a break.

      • Look Who's Hawkin?

I keep up with ‘Seahawks Twitter’ and sometimes it is fun – the CableThanos videos were great. But most of the time I wonder if these guys even enjoy watching their team play! Goodness, all they do is gripe about the Seahawks. The coaching, the philosophy, the playcalling etc. etc. At the end of the day, we had a squad that exceeded expectations, this season was a lot of fun because I was able to watch games without the pressure of high expectations like in years past. It was a fun ride, so why not enjoy it as such! But some people have their narrative and will do whatever they can to affirm it. The “running doesn’t matter” crowd couldn’t make too many peeps this season because of how successful the Seahawks played, but the second they saw their opportunity after the Dallas loss, boy did they take it. But like I said, gotta uphold the narrative!

  42. Sean

I just want to thank everybody here, I have been struggling with depression this blog has been a bright spot in my otherwise horrible mindset. I wish everyone here the best, I probably won’t be back on this website again. Go hawks.

    • Martin

Hi Sean. Keep following the blog – it’s fun! What else is life for but enjoying the stuff we love?

      • Sean

Thank you for the kind words. There is not much time for me left but would like to wish you and your family on your endeavors going forward! Also damn we could use some pass rush help. Watching the Huskies and Seahawks religiously is a demonstration of lack of pass rush.

        • Trevor

Stay strong Sean! I struggle with addiction and it is a daily battle. This blog, Rob and all he amazing members on this blog have been a blessing for me.

May sound silly but when I get anxious now I log onto the blog to read the content , check out the posts and then do some research on players people have identitied or talked about discussed. When I am done the anxiousness is normally combine as my mindset has been changed and I can go about my day in a much more positive frame of mind.

I would also check out Eckhart Tolle and his work on “living in the moment” he has some quick little exercise you can do that really help.

Take care and hope you stay engaged here!

          • jujus

Good recommendation on the book by Eckhart tolle

      All the best

    • GerryG

Please stay and continue to talk Seahawks with us!

I know things can be tough, but having an outlet to talk shop with like minded folks can be a great outlet.

Stay strong friend, there can better days ahead.

    • C-Dog

      Hang in there, Sean!

Seattle’s pass rush is coming and next year we can all start scouting all those speedy receivers. You definitely want to be around for that.

      Go Hawks!

    • Eburgz

Hey Sean. Hope to see you post more. Lots of Seahawks discussions to be had yet!

Might not always feel like it but life is good brother. Stay strong.

Which pass rushers are you eyeing this draft season? Lots of great options this year.

    • Hawk Eye

you are not alone. Some people have a constant struggle and we all have an occasional bout of depression.
Find someone to talk to, just talking to people about it can make a difference, if only to let you know others go through it also
try to exercise and eat right, etc, it won’t cure you, but it can help.
There are chemical imbalances that can be treated with certain drugs.
Lots of info on the web to research, maybe too much.
Wish you all the best and hope you find a way to deal with it

    • Rob Staton

Adam Schefter says the door is open for Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury to draft Kyler Murray No. 1 overall and trading away Josh Rosen.

    • DC

Kliff Kingsbury back on October 28, 2018:

“Kyler is a freak…..I would take him with the first pick of the draft if I could.”

  45. Forty20

You have him vaguely in our range but I looked at a little bit of tape of Zach Allen and came away pretty impressed, Rob. Good first step, inside/out potential, made plays against the run and pass and seemed to be a fairly heady player when it came to diagnosing and reacting to plays.

How do you think he stacks up against Sweat for Seattle?

    • Rob Staton

Very different player obviously. More of an orthodox DE or even a five-technique. Could play inside/out. Combine is huge for Allen. Seattle isn’t taking him without a good short shuttle, split or some explosive traits.

    2019 NFL Draft early declarations:
    https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/draft-2019-early-declarations
Near the bottom of the page, Mike Bell of Fresno St. has excellent passer rtg. against (46.5) and other very good stats, have him listed as a CB, he played FS. Could be a great rd. 4 pick for us – 6’3″ 205, can play FS or CB, 87 tackles in 2018 including 10 apiece in conf. ch. and bowl game, 3 int.s and 8 passes defensed. Not a senior so he won’t be at the senior bowl. Have to wait until the combine or pro day to check out his 40 time, etc..

    • FresnoHawk

MLB Jeff Allison & WR Keashawn Johnson are by far the best players at Fresno State. I question how tuff Bell is? I think the linebackers is we’re the talent is in the Mountain West. We need to keep a close eye on Boise State RB Mattison, he’s a polished physical runner if he test well at the combine he’s gonna be the next beast in the NFL but scouts say he’s too slow.
