New mock draft: 27th March (post 49ers/Miami/Philly trades)

Mac Jones’ Hasselbeck-bod could be heading to the NFC West

Following Friday’s day of drama, I thought I’d join the millions of others rushing to put out another mock draft.

To recap — the 49ers traded up from #12 to #3 in order to position themselves to get a quarterback. Miami, having traded down to #12, then struck a deal with the Eagles to move back up to #6.

Here are a few notes before getting into a two-round mock:

— When thinking about what the 49ers might do, consider the following. Kyle Shanahan has predominantly had success with Matt Schaub, Kirk Cousins and Matt Ryan. They traded for Jimmy Garoppolo. They passed on Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes. The scrambling, creative, improvising quarterbacks have not been Shanahan’s style. The players capable of staying on schedule, playing within structure and distributing the ball quickly and on time are the ones he’s gone with. A lot of people might not want to believe this but when you really think about it, Mac Jones could easily be their guy.

— Why would you trade so much to get up to #3 for Jones? Consider that many people, such as Mike Tannenbaum, have been saying that the feeling is Jones’ floor was #8 and the Panthers. If you truly believe Jones is the guy you can win with — and you know you have to trade into the top-seven — you might as well just go to #3 and make sure you get him. If you believe in a quarterback strongly enough to take them in the top-10, you clearly believe they are franchise-QB material. So while it seems expensive, is it really if you think you’ve found ‘the guy’?

— According to Tony Pauline, the Dolphins are planning to avoid players who held out of the 2020 season. Personally I think they moved back into the top-six because it was representative of where they think the elite talent stretches to in this class. The money is on them taking a receiver or Penei Sewell. I’m not so sure.

— I’ve spent a lot of time looking at Trey Lance and Justin Fields. I’m not saying for a second they are bad players. But I just cannot project them as high as some currently do. Fields has significant technical floors. From the long stride he makes on delivery to his elongated motion. The inability to process and progress through reads at a high level. That’s a problem. With Lance, he has minimal starts and he too carries technical issues which impacts his accuracy. He doesn’t throw with anticipation in the way some of the other QB’s in this class do.

— The Panthers apparently want to hit a home run at quarterback. Here’s the issue though. With the Deshaun Watson situation increasingly making it look like he won’t be dealt pre-draft, Russell Wilson having no interest in the Panthers and the top QB’s expected to go 1-2-3 — Carolina might have to accept their fate and kick the can down the road to next year.

— I’ve included four more trades in this projection. I have the Patriots moving from #15 to #9 in a deal with the Broncos. I have the Jets and Dolphins also trading back into round one. I have the Panthers trading into the back-end of round two with the Packers trading down.

As usual I’ve written out the mock in list form first, with thoughts on each pick to follow…

#64 Tampa Bay — Tommy Togiai (DT, Ohio State)

A thought on each pick…

First round

#1 Jacksonville — Trevor Lawrence (QB, Clemson)

Even despite Zach Wilson’s mind-blowing pro-day, the Jaguars are clearly set on Trevor Lawrence being their guy.

#2 New York Jets — Zach Wilson (QB, BYU)
He showed he’s a special talent. The problem for the Jets now is getting value for Sam Darnold.

#3 San Francisco (v/MIA, HOU) — Mac Jones (QB, Alabama)
A lot of people will freak out but the reality is Jones fits the Shanahan offense better than the remaining options here.

#4 Atlanta — Kyle Pitts (TE, Florida)
New GM Terry Fontenot said they would take the best player available here. That’s Pitts.

#5 Cincinnati — Ja’Marr Chase (WR, LSU)
Of course, the offensive line is an issue for the Bengals. But reuniting Joe Burrow with the player he enjoyed so much success with has to be tempting?

#6 Miami (v/PHI) — Patrick Surtain II (CB, Alabama)
Some teams are going to view Surtain as an elite-level player. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Dolphins went in this direction here.

#7 Detroit — DeVonta Smith (WR, Alabama)
This could be Jaylen Waddle too. But when you’re desperate for a receiver and the player who dominated college football is available, it’ll be hard to pass.

#8 Carolina — Penei Sewell (T, Oregon)
If the Panthers have to punt on addressing the QB position pre-draft, this is a nice consolation prize.

#9 New England (v/DEN) Justin Fields (QB, Ohio State)
Fields shares a lot of similarities to Cam Newton. This would be an ideal transition for the Patriots, who move up to make sure they get their guy.

#10 Dallas — Jaycee Horn (CB, South Carolina)
He looks like a Greek God of a cornerback. Incredibly put together. Dominated Auburn’s Seth Williams.

#11 New York Giants — Rashawn Slater (G, Northwestern)
I’m not as sold on Slater as some others but plenty think he’s a top-10 prospect. I think he’ll make a good guard.

#12 Philadelphia (v/SF, MIA) — Jaylen Waddle (WR, Alabama)
What do the Eagles love at receiver? Pure speed.

#13 LA Chargers — Azeez Ojulari (DE, Georgia)
He’s fast and explosive with a dynamic burst to threaten the edge and the balance to straight and attack the quarterback. He has long arms. He could be special.

#14 Minnesota — Jaelen Phillips (DE, Miami)
Phillips was once a major recruiting superstar and has natural talent to get after the quarterback. Few players have his upside in this draft.

#15 Denver (v/NE) — Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (LB, Notre Dame)
Highly explosive and dynamic — a true first round talent. He can jump a 39-inch vertical and a 10-3 broad jump.

#16 Arizona — Christian Darrisaw (T, Virginia Tech)
The profile is there but he reminds me a bit of Eugene Monroe. Can he be arsed to be great?

#17 Las Vegas — Alijah Vera-Tucker (G, USC)
He’s just a class act. He has short arms so will kick inside but his explosive testing will be right up Tom Cable’s street.

#18 Miami — Micah Parsons (LB, Penn State)
There are some character question marks that could lead to a bit of a fall.

#19 Washington — Trey Lance (QB, North Dakota State)
I’ve said for a while that Lance warrants a grade similar to Jordan Love. This is the range I think he should go in.

#20 Chicago — Elijah Moore (WR, Ole Miss)
Incredible player. Sturdy, explosive and fast. He ran a 4.35 at pro-day.

#21 Indianapolis — Kwity Paye (DE, Michigan)
The Colts love an insane physical profile and while Paye is rough around the edges, he has a high ceiling.

#22 Tennessee — Zaven Collins (LB, Tulsa)
He only ran a 5.03 forty at SPARQ but when you put on the tape he jumps off the screen. He looks like a first rounder.

#23 New York Jets (v/SEA) — Kelvin Joseph (CB, Kentucky)
They’ve added some pass rushers so they might pivot here to cornerback and O-line.

#24 Pittsburgh — Javonte Williams (RB, North Carolina)
He had a record 0.48 broken tackles per rush attempt in 2020, registered 7.0 YPC and 4.59 yards-after-contact per carry. He’s exceptional.

#25 Jacksonville (v/LAR) — Kadarius Toney (WR, Florida)
There’s been talk that his main passion in life might be a music career.

#26 Cleveland — Levi Onwuzurike (DT, Washington)
He gets after it up front with effort and speed. He can disrupt. Some will be put off by a lack of length and skinny lower body.

#27 Baltimore — Josh Myers (C, Ohio State)
Incredibly consistent, tough and very athletic center with a long career ahead of him. He ran a 4.49 short shuttle at 310lbs.

#28 New York Jets (v/NO) — Landon Dickerson (C, Alabama)
I have the Jets moving up from #34 to get ahead of Green Bay and Kansas City. Injuries or not, teams are going to clamber over each other for a chance to draft Dickerson.

#29 Green Bay — Creed Humphrey (C, Oklahoma)
He’s a 3.25 TEF tester and teams will covet his mix of explosive physicality, aggressiveness, combo-blocking and agility. Players with his profile go early.

#30 Buffalo — Travis Etienne (RB, Clemson)
In this range they can afford to seek value. Najee Harris is good but Etienne is simply quicker and more explosive.

#31 Miami (v/KC) — Najee Harris (RB, Alabama)
The Dolphins, having added two defensive studs with their first two picks, move up from #36 to add Harris to their offense.

#32 Tampa Bay — Jayson Oweh (DE, Penn State)
They’ve brought everyone back so can take a few shots in the draft. Oweh’s incredible pro-day performance could secure a place at the end of round one.

Second round

#33 Jacksonville — Pat Freiermuth (TE, Penn State)
The ‘Baby Gronk’ nickname is warranted. Superb body control and size. They’ve appointed his old coach.

#34 New Orleans (v/NYJ) — Kellen Mond (QB, Texas A&M)
I think he’s a great talent and he’s worth considering as a quarterback with starter potential.

#35 Atlanta — Trevon Moehrig (S, TCU)
This has become a big need for the Falcons. Moehrig is steady if somewhat unspectacular.

#36 Kansas City (v/MIA, HOU) — Quinn Meinerz (G/C, UWW)
Meinerz is a 3.41 TEF tester with great length and size. He was also superb at the Senior Bowl. He could go earlier than people think.

#37 Philadelphia — Greg Newsome (CB, Northwestern)
He ran a quicker than expected forty but appeared to tire quickly during his pro-day workout.

#38 Cincinnati — Christian Barmore (DT, Alabama)
Turned it on late in the season but had a slow start. No doubt he can flash as a pass rusher in college but can he do it consistently at the next level?

#39 Carolina — Caleb Farley (CB, Virginia Tech)
His injury is a concern. His tackling is another issue.

#40 Denver — Daviyon Nixon (DT, Iowa)

A TFL machine in 2020 (13.5). Nixon creates havoc from the interior and is a true playmaking defensive tackle.

#41 Detroit — Elijah Molden (CB, Washington)
Outstanding player who will only last this long based on his size and straight-line speed. Ran a 3.93 short shuttle at SPARQ and jumped a 37 inch vertical.

#42 New York Giants — Gregory Rousseau (DE, Miami)
He’s long and lean but a lot of his wins are unusual. He’s not a dynamic speed rusher and he lacks the sand in his pants to control as a five-technique.

#43 San Francisco — Eric Stokes (CB, Georgia)
An ascending player with great length, speed, agility and great consistency on tape.

#44 Dallas — Milton Williams (DE/DT, LA Tech)
What a pro-day! He ran a 4.25 short shuttle at 284lbs and jumped a 38.5 inch vertical. Incredible physical talent who can rush inside/out.

#45 Jacksonville (v/MIN) — Alim McNeill (DT, NC State)
Massive, highly athletic prospect who will shock people when he runs and does the agility testing. Ran a 4.27 short shuttle at SPARQ.

#46 New England — Ben Cleveland (G, Georgia)
The mountain from Game of Thrones.

#47 LA Chargers —
Jalen Mayfield (T, Michigan)
Tackle or guard prospect with the skills to succeed at either position

#48 Las Vegas — Baron Browning (LB, Ohio State)
Wow-athlete at linebacker with tremendous character and intensity. Ran a 4.18 short shuttle at SPARQ and jumped a 37 inch vertical.

#49 Arizona — Brevin Jordan (TE, Miami)
He ran a sensational 4.21 short shuttle at 250lbs at SPARQ.

#50 Miami — Tylan Wallace (WR, Oklahoma State)
The Dolphins wait on the receiver position and are rewarded with a highly competitive, very talented player in Wallace.

#51 Washington — Tyson Campbell (CB, Georgia)

He has great size and agility but his agility and change of direction might be an issue and I just didn’t see him play the ball well enough in college.

#52 Chicago — Wyatt Davis (G, Ohio State)
Very solid guard prospect who can start quickly.

#53 Tennessee — Rashod Bateman (WR, Minnesota)
Had a highly consistent 2019 season but followed it up with a weird 2020 — before he wisely took himself out before damaging his stock any further.

#54 Indianapolis — Sam Cosmi (T, Texas)
They need a tackle and the Colts consistently take highly explosive athletes for their O-line. Cosmi excelled at his pro-day.

#55 Pittsburgh — Teven Jenkins (T, Oklahoma State)
He’s big and physical but do you need to kick him up the arse to max out his potential?

#56 Seattle — Alex Leatherwood (G/T, Alabama)
With the top center’s off the board the Seahawks pivot to a tackle for the future. Leatherwood has decent length and jumped a 34.5 inch vertical plus an incredible 9-10 broad. That’s the kind of profile Seattle likes.

#57 LA Rams — Rondale Moore (WR, Purdue)
He’s a first round athlete — the question is whether he’s more than just a gadget player.

#58 Baltimore — Joe Tryon (DE, Washington)
Outstanding athlete who can drop when needed and is a great fit for the Ravens defense.

#59 Cleveland — Payton Turner (DE, Houston)
Massive potential, great personality. A player with a big future.

#60 New Orleans — Terrace Marshall Jr (WR, LSU)
He’s had some concentration drops but he still excelled during a miserable season for LSU.

#61 Buffalo — Tommy Tremble (TE, Notre Dame)
He’s a head-hunter as a blocker. His second name is what players do when they’re near him on a run-block. He destroys defenders.

#62 Carolina (v/GB) — Davis Mills (QB, Stanford)
The Panthers move up to at least buy a lottery ticket at the QB position this year.

#63 Kansas City — Walker Little (T, Stanford)
He has what you want in a left tackle. He’ll only last because he hasn’t played for two years.

#64 Tampa Bay — Tommy Togiai (DT, Ohio State)
Big, physical interior defender with a fantastic motor.

Thoughts on the Seahawks

This is why you sign a draft hedge. Ethan Pocic is eminently replaceable. But you’re picking at #56. You’re not sat there at #23, knowing you’ll be able to get one of the top guys (even after potentially trading down).

Explosive offensive linemen go early. Explosive offensive linemen with good college tape and a top Senior Bowl go even earlier.

I wouldn’t bank on Quinn Meinerz or Creed Humphrey being available and there’s just too much buzz around Landon Dickerson (even with his injury issues).

In this scenario the Seahawks have to look elsewhere.

They could focus on the guard position where options remain in a deep class (Aaron Banks, Trey Smith). I’m not a fan of moving Damien Lewis to center and I really hope they don’t decide to do that. However, it’s the kind of thing Seattle is always willing to contemplate it seems.

They could draft a tackle/guard. In this mock I have them taking Alex Leatherwood. I’m not convinced he has the feet and agility to hold down the left tackle position at the next level. Yet he does have decent length (34.5 inch arms) and major explosive traits. That’s generally what Seattle goes for on the O-line.

Dillon Radunz is a similar prospect they could consider here. D’Ante Smith has great length and excelled in Mobile. Brady Christensen had an unbelievable workout at the BYU pro-day but his lack of length (32 inch arms) is an issue in terms of projecting him to the Seahawks.

They could also move off the O-line altogether and look at receiver. Speed is important here — a 4.4 forty or faster is Seattle’s benchmark.

Rondale Moore is so explosive and quick that he could be an option. However — he’s very much an ‘around the LOS’ and YAC type player when the Seahawks want deep threats. They might prefer D’Wayne Eskridge, who was also available.

Another option could be Duke’s Chris Rumph, depending on how he tests. For me he’s a linebacker who can reduce down rather than a full-time EDGE. He could act as a SAM/LEO for the Seahawks but typically they only take exceptional athletes for that role. He would need to perform well at Duke’s pro-day on Monday. If they don’t re-sign K.J. Wright though, he’s an option.

So many people rush to tell you this draft is a write-off or worth punting on purely because there’s no combine, meetings and a few players opted out of the 2020 season. If you actually study this class, there’s a lot of really good players with quality depth at several positions.

The value from the end of the first deep into the second is not to be sniffed at.

I’ll happily hold my hands up if I’m wrong — but I cannot see any way John Schneider goes into this draft with only three picks. I also can’t see him trading out of the top-60 completely for the sake of a couple of late round picks to boost the coffers.

One way or another — I think they’ll make a move to re-gain stock.

We have to be realistic about how they’re going to do that though. A lot of people, in our comments section and on other sites, thought they could get a third or fourth round pick for Jarran Reed. That was never going to happen. In the end they couldn’t even get a swap of picks or a seventh rounder.

Trading Tyler Lockett would decimate your receiving group and create more friction with the quarterback (Freddie Swain and John Ursua as WR2 & WR3? No chance).

There are only three players on the roster who can be realistically moved to re-gain legitimate stock. The draft is a month away. It should be an interesting few weeks.

Nice mock, Rob. I like your QB projections, especially Mond to NO. Wow, that would be something to learn the trade from Payton. Also like taking a chance with Leatherwood so he can start learning under Brown’s tutelage.

  2. Bigsteviej

The 49ers passed on Watson and Mahomes because the team was such a shamble when Shanahan/Lynch took over that they thought they had to build up the OL, etc. before drafting a QB. They didn’t want to ruin a young QB (see “David Carr”). They’ve said that they didn’t even seriously scout QB’s in their first draft.

After Josh Allen carved up their defense last year Shanahan talked about the need for a guy who could use his legs when the first few reads don’t work. His thinking about the QB position is likely evolving.

Chris Simms, one of Shanahan’s closest friend outside of the team, among others thinks it’s gonna be Mac Jones, so you’re in good company. And it very well could be Jones. But Fields checks a lot of the right boxes, and there’s a personal connection (however minimal) with Shanahan. We’ll see.

P.S. Great mock, with wonderful writeups of the players/team needs.

They’ve said that they didn’t even seriously scout QB’s in their first draft.

      Then they are incompetent fools.

Because ‘not seriously scouting’ two of the best QB’s to ever play the game because you think you need to build up other areas first would be a crime against intelligent thinking.

    • God of Thunder

I went and spent 20 min at NinersNation. The posters there don’t know if the QB will be — as they put it — Lance, Fields or Mac.

Most *think* Mac or Lance. And I think a slim majority favour Lance.

All I can say is that SF must really love whoever it is they covet because they’ve given up a lot and there are issues with each of Lance, Mac and Fields…

Thanks for the mock Rob, love the Pen portraits.

I can’t remember who it was, it was during the Senior Bowl, but I did hear one of the Seattle commentators say that Alex Leatherwood reminded them of Germain Ifedi in his measurables and movement. I’m afraid I have been able to get onboard with him since. D’Ante Smith has a higher ceiling in my view, he’d be my choice in this scenario.

    • Trevor

I have been watching him all season because you spoke so highly of him.

  5. Peter

Absolutely amazing output given so little to work with.

Wonder how many readers will catch Javontae Williams as your first RB off the board……?……

Rob things change every year but is youtube where you’re still watching most prospects? Or some other site? Thanks

    • Rob Staton

A mix of YouTube and games saved on my TV

  6. Pugs1

Nice mock! Can’t go wrong with more OL help. What are the odds they possibly target a #3 WR at 56?

    • Rob Staton

      It’s possible, yep

  7. Julian Langdon

Seems to be a lot of ‘good’ Offensive Linemen this year with sub 34 (tackle) or 33 (guard) inch arms. I don’t know how many of them have taken snaps at Center but it maybe if a Teven Jenkins, Jalen Mayfield or Brady Christensen falls to #56, perhaps they would still be worth the pick with the Center position in mind?

    • Rob Staton

Mayfield’s testing was dreadful I think we can rule him out. I can’t see Jenkins at center. Christensen maybe.

      • Mike

Rob, loved reading this. Do you think Pitts is a better player than Sewell? I severely dislike the Ducks, but Sewell has bounced around the top-3 for most of the past year. How should people like me with an untrained eye view this?

        • Rob Staton

I think Sewell is an excellent player. But he has a couple of things playing against him. Other excellent players played in 2020 and team needs. The Falcons and Dolphins have invested in OT in the recent years. As have Cincy. Detroit needs a WR. So for me he could easily go at #5 or #8.

      • Julian Langdon

        Thanks for the feedback.

It’s said sometimes that taller players have a disadvantage at playing Center. Nose Tackles often a shorter player, can get under the pads quickly at the snap and then have a leverage advantage so pushing back into the pocket quickly? Does this shows in Pocic’s play (he’s 6″6), certainly it might make playing guys such as Myers or Jenkins, both 6″6 on pre Pro day measures, at the Center position less desirable?

I haven’t seen Jalen Mayfied’s testing numbers. Getting Pro Day test numbers is quite a task I find. I liked to use the Steelers Depot websight for the NFL Combine numbers in the past, but finding Pro Day numbers is much more difficult. Is there a web resource you use in particular for getting the Stats Rob, I find sometimes the Live Trackers such as PFN or PFF can take a few days to be updated?

  8. Big Mike

Appreciate the effort as always my man.
It will absolutely kill me if the stealers get Williams. Problem is, he makes perfect sense so it well could happen. 😞

  9. Henry Taylor

Thanks for the mock Rob, been refreshing all morning in anticipation. I did my own 2 rounder on pfn earlier and ended up in the same situation with the centres gone (painfully giving Meinerz to the Steelers 1 pick earlier) and also decided to take Leatherwood, but didnt find myself thrilled with the prospect. Especially because I could see it meaning Leatherwood starts at guard and Lewis gets pushed inside to centre.

He was gone in mine but for yours I think I would take Moore. The Waldron effect could mean they look to get more of a RAC element to their offence, something already indicated with the addition of Everett. Those fly sweeps the Rams love to run could be nasty with Rondale’s ability with the ball in his hands.

  10. Mick

Nice writeup Rob, this is such a pleasure to read. We got so many holes in the roster that I believe best thing would be to go best player available, and if that happens to be a corner, a tight end or a linebacker, so be it.

  11. Happy Hawk

Love your mocks Rob. You have 3 centers going in a row in the first round. All good prospects but has that ever happened in the NFL draft before 3 centers first round? Maybe if the centers get pushed down a bit the Hawks may benefit and snag Meinerz?

    • Rob Staton

Well just because something hasn’t happened before doesn’t mean it won’t happen now

      • Jeffers

Also they wouldn’t all have to go in the first round for them to all be gone by the time we pick, and in 2018 there were 3 centers picked by pick number 39.

  12. Ed

Good stuff like always. Need to become a draft guy and takeover for most of the jabronis out there.

I know a lot of people think Lions will draft a WR, but I just don’t see it. Yes, big need, but new coach and philosophy cry out ground and pound. See more LB or DL, so maybe a trade down or just take Parsons or Ojulari.

Hawks really need to get to top of 2nd. Who needs a blitzing S and aged but top MLB in the league?

    • Simo

Rob’s been saying for weeks that trading Jamal, Bobby, or Russ is really the only way they can get any additional draft stock. I also agree with him that its very unlikely they stand pat with only three picks (this has to be killing John Schneider right now), so we should expect a trade of some sort.

They have been filling some of the roster holes with fairly shrewd free agent additions, so let’s hope for a favorable trade or two followed by some excellent drafting!!

  13. Julian Langdon.

Another player I like the look of as a SAM/Leo type and has tested well is Shaka Toney of Penn State. Apparently he did well dropping in coverage when tested at the Senior Bowl, something he didn’t have to do much at Penn State. Could be a fourth round prospect?

  14. Happy Hawk

Saw that S Watkins signed with the Ravens. It has been rumored that the Hawks and the Ravens were negotiating with A Brown. Now with the Watkins signing looks like the door is wide open and frankly it makes too much sense to not seriously consider this. The Hawks have a need for a WR3, It would make their disgruntled QB happy and he has the skillset when paired with Lockett and Metcalf to present a scary passing game threat in 2021. Can the Hawks get a fair deal and will they take on his baggage?

    • Simo

Seems like a risk worth taking! Can’t imagine AB can command a very high salary, especially if only two teams were pursuing him!

    • Rob Staton

      I can’t see it

I don’t think anyone will sign Brown until right before the season anyway

      • cha

        I don’t disagree.

However, that would be the ultimate pass-aggressive Russ move by the Seahawks to sign AB right now.

‘Okay Russ we got your BFF signed sealed and delivered as you requested. Feel like behaving like a grownup and quitting this grousing in the media and get to work?’

That would swing the media over to the Seahawks’ side. Even though we know it’s not necessarily about players and more about system and coaching.

        • Rob Staton

I keep coming back to Tony P’s report that Seattle is ready to move on too.

I think both parties are just biding time.

Not sure trying to win RW round, even aggressively, is on the agenda

          • Trevor

Agreed I think there has been nothing out of the Seahawks and just some tweets from Russ about signings because they are kind of stuck together now unless the Bears step up and make a better offer or Russ expands his list. The idea that things are all of a sudden great again seems silly to me. This is far from over IMO.

          • cha

Curious to see how the Seahawks react in the light of the mega trades yesterday though.

Lawrence, Lance, Wilson, Jones all seem out of reach now.

Would they like Mond or Fields enough to make the move?

Or do they work Darnold for a couple years and evaluate their options in 2022?

          • cha

My point about AB and Russ wasn’t to win him back. But to jab him with a stick, like they apparently did with the Sherman ‘courtship’

They don’t seem interested in having mature conversation.

            • Paul Cook

“They don’t seem interested in having mature conversation.”

Succinctly put. It’s almost embarrassing when you really think about it.

              • dcd2

I remember a buddy of mine who got divorced saying the tipping point is when their clashes moved from disagreement to resentment.

I feel like Pete and RW have come to resent each other to a degree. Hard to mend that fence.

          • Brett

That’s a very good point, Rob. Russell committed the ultimate sin here… he trashed the team. The management. The O-line. The defense (indirectly). And he did it repeatedly. In public. Through leaks via numerous avatars. Several LOB members got let go for this very reason.

This amounts to a challenge on a fundamental level not just to PC’s sense of what makes a great team, but to JS’s shared vision that the QB is one of the big ‘room-tilters’ in the building who has a fundamental responsibility not to trash his own house. RW has every right to speak his mind, but if John & Pete really believe what they preach, then this new ‘me-over’all-else’ RW needs to be shown the door. Else they should just let a 30-something player and his agent run the org. The wound created by this behavior – intentionally or otherwise – was that deep.

Likely the only reason they’d keep him at this point is they don’t have – and can’t manufacture on short notice – a workable alternative without doing a complete rebuild.

            • dcd2

I mentioned resentment above and I think this comment gets at the heart of it.

RW resents Pete for holding him and the team back. From insisting on forcing his ancient ethos into the modern game. And for squandering resources and by extension the championship years of this team.

Pete resents what you hit on above. Putting himself before the team. Taking his grievances public and prioritizing his ‘legacy’ to the extent that he won’t shut up about it in a single interview.

Both have valid points, but these viewpoints clash severely.

              • Paul Cook

Yeah, that seems where it’s at now. It’s funny that the local media, for the most part, is just not giving the breach in the relationship it’s proper due. Many of them talk and write as if getting a vet LG, taking a flier on that TE, and a few resignings is suddenly going to repair the emotional damage. It certainly doesn’t seem so to me.

                We’ll see.

            • Happy Hawk

If you lose RW then it will be a total rebuild.

        • Jordan E

Exactly!! At minimum AB would outperform his contract as well. Its clear Russ wants AB at this point and the Hawks are the one who is reluctant.

It could be a win-win for PC & JS viewpoint. If things fail it will reflect on Russ most likely and at the same time show that the front office is giving Russ the weapons hes requesting. AB by all accounts was a model player in TB. Pretty sure hes on medication and still doing therapy as well.

  15. TheOtherJordan

Great mock Rob. Personally, I don’t think Sewell drops past #5 but we’ll see. I understand the Zach Wilson love because of the physical attributes. However, I think it will be very interesting to watch as the years progress and he faces a level of competition he hasn’t remotely seen at BYU, in the greatest media microscope in the entire US, for a franchise that is notoriously poorly run. I don’t think he could end up in a worse situation than the NY Jets given his background and where he is coming from.

  16. ElPasoHawk

If Davis Mills is there when they pick at 56, I think it would be foolish not to snap him up. As you’ve said it is very unlikely that Wilson is here long term. I love the prospects of Leatherwood at LG and grooming him for LT, but they have to come out of this draft with a potential QB of the future.

    • dcd2

I’d be up for this as well, assuming the really like Mills. If we have a highly rated QB already on the roster we aren’t hamstrung in any negotiations, by needing to include a top 10 pick or make it a 3-way deal with some other team.

I really think they should go after Minshew as an alternative though. He won’t cost a 2nd rounder and it accomplishes the same goal. Maybe offer a conditional pick, where it’s a 2022 4th, that could be a 3rd if he makes 8 starts.

Duane is really starting to get up in age though.

      • ElPasoHawk

Yeah, Brown is getting up there and they need to start trying to identify/groom his replacement. The Adams trade has made this off-season so difficult. Zero draft capital and the two most important positions in the NFL with huge question marks. I have zero confidence that they will trade Adams.

  17. Strategicdust

After reading the great articles all year long on this site, I’m frequently frustrated how Seahawks veer off the draft choices we all think they should take for a player or position that seems questionable. If that happens this year, what position seems most likely? Quarterback (imagine the drama that causes)? Cornerback? Linebacker?

  18. Paul Cook

Mac Jones…at #3…I’m not a very good scout. I watched a lot of Alabama and I was never wowed by this guy. He actually was pretty nondescript to me. They had such talent around him blocking for him, receiving for him, running for him. Is he really going to be that good, warrant that high of a pick when the talent around him is not going to be clearly well beyond almost any team he faces, when he might have to carry a team to victory much on his own? I’m just not scared at all of this guy entering the NFC West.

But what do I know? I could easily be completely whiffing on this guy.

Trevor Lawrence is a no-brainer #1 pick. They guy can do it all. Even I can see real natural talent in Zach Wilson. So I get that. Don’t know enough about Lance. And Fields I could see as a real hit or miss QB, a QB whose talents may never translate to the NFL in terms of being anything resembling a franchise QB. But Mac Jones? Like I said, I’m probably way off base here.

I totally feel you about this draft, Rob. It’s painful to see how some real positional holes could be filled this draft if we had had our full bevy of picks. As it stands now, the Hawks really have to stick the landing at #56.

Great mock stuff. It is also hard for me to see Sewell fall to #8 or worse, but it’s possible. I watched him play a bunch out here and he was just sensational and dominant right from the get go.

    Anyway…you da man.

    • Blitzy the Clown

Reading up on Bama QB Mac Jones, fascinating background. As a scout team QB in one prax he kept throwing TD bombs against the 1st team D. Saban told him to cut it out. His response? “ Tell your defense to stop it”— trey wingo (@wingoz) March 27, 2021

      • Paul Cook

Fair enough. Like I said, I’m no talent scout, and probably whiffing on this guy.

        • Frank

Dig his personality a lot for a QB, processing, size, just doesn’t have freakish talent. My biggest worry is the Jets doing Jet things and drafting someone besides Wilson or Larwence and letting them slide to San Francisco.

  19. line_hawk

The Dolphins for all their wheeling and dealing are still the team without a QB. I don’t believe in Tua. Do you think Mac Jones would have been an upgrade over Tua? It will be a nightmare if they have 4 extra firsts but still don’t come up with a franchise QB. I would rather have chosen a QB at 3 considering their roster is good enough to not pick in top 5 anytime soon.

    • line_hawk

Picking Tua over Herbert might be their undoing. How one pick sometimes makes or breaks a team! Could you imagine them with Herbert & a boatload of picks!

    • DougM

Maybe they now have enough ammunition to trade up to the 2 spot.

  20. Hughz

Rob, what are your thoughts on KJ? It doesn’t look like he’s going to get the contract he wants. At what price point do you bring him back to the Hawks?

  21. Brondleman

Rondale Moore would be a dream pick for me. He would make teams pay for playing 2 deep against us but Pete’s a size queen and the Seahawks never seem able to implement a decent screen game so I don’t see it happening. I will be disappointed if they draft a Guard or future Right Tackle when they need someone who can play right away this year. I wouldn’t mind a future Left Tackle if they can aquire more picks and move up.

    • Pugs1

I agree on Moore. I know he is 5’7” but 4.29 40 and is build like a RB. His cuts are amazing! Pete does love speed.

  22. Rob4q

A couple guys who are moving up in the PFN SIM rankings that could be of interest to the Seahawks:

    Kendrick Green, OG/OC Illinois

  23. Blitzy the Clown

I didn’t get a chance to post this in the livestream thread but right after I finished the replay of that I caught Tony P on Breaking Down the Board with Anita Marks and Steve Verderosa talking about the same things you guys were at the end:

They [Dolphins] have another year to basically examen Tua and see if he’s their quarterback of the future. And if he’s not, you know what? They still have a bunch of draft capital that they could use moving forward to trade for a veteran quarterback. People talked about Deshaun Watson this year, that may be out the door. But you know what? We’ve reported here this could be the final year for Russell Wilson in Seattle, and Seattle and Russell Wilson may part ways after the season. Miami’s sitting there with all that draft capital. If they don’t believe that Tua’s gonna be able to take them to the level where they want to, you’ve got all that capital, maybe move it for a veteran like Russell Wilson. If he’s on the market after the 2021 season.

Granted he’s not making a prediction, and he was more talking about Miami’s future more than Russell’s. But still, it’s more smoke for a fire that some say doesn’t exist.

    • God of Thunder

Neither Watson nor Wilson are remotely likely to be moved this year. Next year conversely it’s very possible both are moved. Houston gets a chance to sort out their (obviously coming) rebuild. Watson settles out of court or goes to trial. The Seahawks have a year with Wilson and Wagner, and by editing, avoid the worst cap hit. And have time for planning. Other teams have a chance to get the trading ducks in a row.

      • God of Thunder

        *waiting not editing

This is the Bobby Wagner play I talked about in my LB review.

  25. Ukhawk

Interesting draft, not sure if they go for a backup tackle but guess it depends on how long Brown will continue.

Also Leatherwood really underwhelmed at the Senior Bowl. Wonder if Eichenberg or Littke would be preferred?

See Nixon and McNeill went earlier but I believe DT may be a strong option outside of OL, DB and TE/WR.

Rob IF they traded up (tough without ammo), who would you go for from pick ~20 onwards and who do you consider the Seahawky player in the draft ??

  26. cha

Not saying I 100% agree. Just loving the throw.

    • Rob Staton

      He’s got a point

  27. Frank

The amount of time and effort you put in is astounding, I know I sound the part of a critic trying to poke holes in your reasoning but it’s obviously head and shoulders above contemporaries. My gut feeling is San Francisco just outbid New England for Mac Jones. I think the Cam Newton was a one off, like Tebow for McDanials. Purely speculative, but I have a feel the trade line is still open on Draft day for RW, and a Fields is a likely target. He reminds me a lot of Wilson good and bad but a higher ceiling because of traits. Also wonder if the Giants are really set at QB and If Wilson wouldn’t like the Market, or who slides. I think this class could have a league changing QBs.

    • Paul Cook

“My gut feeling is San Francisco just outbid New England for Mac Jones.”

In spite of me recent ramblings about Jones, something about this rang true to me.

  28. charlietheunicorn

Lance is the #3 pick, but wouldn’t you love to be a team sitting at pick 4 through #8…. some extremely talented guys who might contribute day 1 will be available who might normally be a top 2 or 3 pick.

Are there more high quality offense players than defensive players? DE and CB always get way over drafted…. and my favorite pick at first glance #31 Miami (v/KC) — Najee Harris (RB, Alabama).

And… I can’t hate on #56 Seattle — Alex Leatherwood (G/T, Alabama). If he was picked, would they slide Lewis inside to Center? Very intriguing.

Center, RB3, WR3 and TE3 appear to be the major holes on offense while CB2, DT2 and LB3 might get love as well on defense. RB, CB DT and WR could be later picks, so I keep circling C and/or G/T for the round 2 pick. That is one of the reasons I really like the mock of Leatherwood to Seattle…. fits a need and provides good long term depth on the OL.

  29. cha

More support for Mac Jones at #3

    https://twitter.com/RealTannenbaum/status/1375561281579716617

    • God of Thunder

NinersNation posters going nuts; they have no idea of the identity of their QB of the future. And it’s annoying them.

  30. UkAlex6674

I’m on board with Jones at 3. There are a number of teams that would have been ahead of San Francisco that may have been interested. Makes sense to move up BUT you got to ask has Salah had some input on this by telling Lynch they are going to take Lawrence or Wilson at 2, so moving up to 3 will ensure the Jones pick.

    • Rob Staton

The Niners don’t need to know the Jets’ intimate plans to know Wilson is going #2.

      It’s been obvious for weeks

  31. Tomas

I have a sinking feeling that Pete’s first pick in the draft will be a defensive player. Since Pete seems to have the final say on everything, Is it not true that Schneider is GM in name only – the more accurate title being Assistant GM, to Pete. The facade of John holding typical GM decision-making authority serves to insulate Pete to from full accountability for his decisions, good or bad. Not saying here that John doesn’t have an important, oftentimes persuasive voice, but at best his GM title should be followed by an asterisk. I believe that clear, honest lines of authority/accountability would better serve any major corporate entity. Am I off-base in my thinking, and if so, how?

    • Rokas

it really depends who will be available when SEA is on the clock, and who do they like. Even if Pete has the final say, they used their first picks both for offense and defense, at least i can not see a pattern and what not. If that’s the roster we are going into the draft, I would not bet my money that they gonna select someone on a defensive side of the ball.

    • BobbyK

No. You’re right. He’s a GM in terms of getting help at safety for Pete (Diggs), pass rush help (Dunlap), and finding players like Reed. He has some strengths. He has a voice such as when he desperately wanted to draft Wilson, but the Wilson pick shows who is in charge. Pete wanted Wagner and got him. John had to wait and hope his guy would still be there in the third, which he was. I can’t imagine John wanting to do the Jamal Adams deal. That seems 100% all Pete. No sane GM would trade the farm for a guy like that.

      • Henry Taylor

I don’t think we really know that Jamal was Pete and not John. I think it’s clear Pete wanted him but we have nothing to suggest John wasn’t on board with it.

And I’m also pretty sure I’ve read that when Kendricks got drafted ahead of them, Pete suggested they take Wilson there but John was confident they could wait and they drafted Wagner. I’m can’t remember where I’ve read that so it might not be true, but it’s about as substantiated as your theory.

        • Rob Staton

          Well whoever made the decision…

          It was bloody stupid

          • Henry Taylor

            Yes it was

          • AlaskaHawk

Those are the sort of decisions that should have led to a real *ss chewing at the least and a firing at worst.

    • DougM

Cutting Reed and getting Al Woods for insurance just as getting Pocic for insurance, they could be targeting a defensive tackle as well as an interior offensive lineman. I could see them taking a defensive tackle first because there might be more of a chance to get an interior offensive linemen with their second pick.

      • Tomas

Interesting responses to my query, thank you all, gentlemen.

  32. BobbyK

Rob – Let’s say the Seahawks get #20. Who would you have them taking in the mock above if they had a 1, 2 and 3 (and Darnold, minus Wilson)? Williams?

    • Rob Staton

I might do a piece on that next week

    • Hughz

Odds are high they would trade back.

      • BobbyK

        What else is new?

  33. Trevor

Really hoping the Hawks add another solid young interior OL this draft. Ideally Dickerson, Meinerz or Cleveland. They are 1 for 1 since hiring Steve Hutchinson as an OL scout by drafting Lewis. I wonder if he will make a difference in how they draft?

  34. CL

[NFL Update] Jaguars making the AFC Title game in ’17 is incredible when looking at it this way: ’12: 2nd worst record in NFL ’13: 3rd worst record ’14: 3rd worst record ’15: 5th worst record ’16: 4th worst record ’17: Title game ’18: 5th worst record ’19: 7th worst record ’20: Worst record

Stunning… they have exactly as many playoff wins as the Seahawks in the last four years..

    • Big Mike

      But, but, 12-4

  35. dcd2

I can’t wait to see the numbers for Chris Rumph.

We don’t even have a SAM on the team at the moment. I do wonder if they’d feel comfortable with Rumph, as he was never really asked to cover at Duke. He’s more of an attacking 3-4 OLB to date. If he tests well and they feel he could play in space, he’s got crazy upside. Bruce was never asked to cover in college either.

    • Julian Langdon

It’ll be interesting to compare him against Shaka Toney. I like Shaka as a possible SAM, he maybe there on day 3, though he had a good pro day (except for Pittsburgh, who hasn’t) that might push him up boards. He was also productive sacking the passer at Penn State with 20.5 sacks in 4 years.

  37. Blitzy the Clown

I don’t expect it would happen, but just for grins, would you trade Adams back to the Jets for our original first round pick and Darnold?

    • Rob Staton

      No

      • Ed

Surprised you wouldn’t trade Adams for a 1st and Darnold. I would trade Adams for a 1st, don’t even need Darnold. Heck, I might trade Adams for an early 2nd.

        • Whit21

It seems like they’re trying to mend the relationship with russ.. why would they trade for darnold…. that just makes 2021 seahawks worse with two QBs that expect to start and lose your starting safety

    • Ryan

Maybe if it’s next year’s first round pick. I’m kind of worried it’s going to be pretty high.

  38. Keith

All this talk about Jones, Fields or Lance. The smart money says that the 49ers traded up to get themselves a box safety to compete with the Hawks.

    • Sea Mode

Didn’t you know? The NFCW teams made a secret pact to have no first round picks for the next few years. The Cards have just been lagging behind, but there’s still time for them to fall in line…

    • Big Mike

      🙁

  39. Julian Langdon

It’s interesting seeing teams on manoeuvres to take a quarterback, at the moment it’s at the top of the first, but I’m thinking about the next tier. A team like New England, Philadelphia or Carolina need a QB, where do they position themselves? For them I don’t see there is value in selecting a QB in the second round. For me there are early 1st round QB’s, late 1st round QBs, then 3rd rounders and below.

Any team taking a QB in the early rounds is doing so because there’s a plan of succession for them to be the starter in, at most, a couple of years. Why waste an early pick otherwise (yes Green Bay looking at you). For any other position than a QB and perhaps a Left Tackle, who’ll need more time to develop, a pick in the first two rounds should be made with a plan to start the player fairly early in their NFL career.

So with a QB it comes down to the fifth year option. You think he could be your franchise guy. You don’t want to have to pay him too soon. So you have to take him in the first. You like him. He flashes the ability, he has the size, the arm and the athleticism, but perhaps had poor receivers or coaching. Maybe he had limited starts but crucially, he is projected to go in the second round. If you can, trade to the back of the first and take him then (you’ll likely pick up a second 2nd round pick as well). If he has some major flaws, mechanics or unlikely measurables, but weaknesses that you speculate can be overcome, maybe; take him in Rd 3 or later. At best he could turn out to be a very pleasant surprise, a la R.Wilson and Prescott, but most likely will be your backup in the longer term. Crucially you haven’t used a 2nd round pick on player you’re only hoping, might be able to start.

Also, are there any veteran QB’s who have their salaries indexed to the Salary Cap at 14% or less? It’d seem the sensible way for them to be paid, from the teams perspective but also the QB’s, assuming they want to win something? It’s well documented that QB’s with a cap hit of over 13% don’t win Superbowls.

    • Scot04

I’ve heard it mentioned before. I just don’t understand how anyone can possibly think about a position change for him. He doesn’t even seem to feel comfortable coming back and playing his regular position. I’d just like to see him get on the fricking field. I don’t really care where it is. Seahawks need all the cheap players they can get.

      • cha

I think there’s so much creativity wasted with articles like these. I’ve so often seen writers treat depth like it’s a problem. It’s not! It’s a huge advantage! Why is that so hard a concept to grasp?

The premise of that piece is “oh no this talented guy is 3rd on the depth chart, we need take him way out of his natural position and put him somewhere else where the team has a need, that’ll be clever!”

It should be “the Seahawks have great depth at LEO/EDGE. What kind of rush packages could they put together to keep everyone fresh and cause trouble for offenses?”

That second article would be some crack good writing. I’d love to read that.

        • Rusty

He was definitely primarily a rusher but he was asked to do ‘SAM things’ on occasion, and not just dropping off on zone blitzes. He’d follow a TE or RB out wide and either reroute – flat or just play man coverage

Depth isn’t a bad thing but right now he looks more like DE5 than DE3, and he could still be in the rotation

Possibly a lot to put on his plate. But if he did end up being good at it it’d help make some more ambiguous fronts to be a more effective pressure team as gets mentioned here a lot. Taylor + Mayowa on the edges and you’ve got two essentially 3-4 OLB’s who could drop into coverage or rush, essentially what they wanted to do last season with Mayowa and Irvin

          • Rob Staton

Our hope for Taylor this year should be that he plays at all

            Nothing more, nothing less

    • Pran

might as well carry water bottles to fellow players to be on field..

    • Rob Staton

      🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

    • BobbyK

Think of the LB investment if they did that!

SAM – A guy they took in the 2nd round last year who they also traded a 3rd round pick just to get.

MLB – Highest paid in the NFL.

WILL – 1st round pick last year.

Bench – A guy they just took in the 3rd round two years ago (traded up to get).

I can’t think of any team that runs a 3-4 who have made more of a LB investment than Pete/John.

      • BobbyK

But, yeah, there’s no way he’s a SAM. At least with having Dunlap/Mayowa at LEO they aren’t pinning any hopes on Taylor. If he contributes – that’s great. They really screwed themselves over last year pinning hopes on him.

      • dcd2

Those are sunk costs. None of which are providing any great value.

Bobby as much as we love him is killing us with that contract.

    • Submanjoe

On some level it is just disrespectful to have these guys change positions like the Seahawks do.

    • D-OZ

Interesting take. I think they are going to get Taylor to 100% or @ least close to it before they turn him loose. I think it may be removing the rod in his lower leg, which is a two month recovery. I mean who would would feel right with a rod in their lower leg? Certainly not me. He will play in 21….

    • Henry Taylor

Am I the only one that doesn’t think this is that bad of an idea, his primary role would still be rushing the passer and the transition would essentially be to play the role Bruce played (who was also drafted to be a DE).

He does need to get on the field before we can talk about any of this, but I don’t view it as forcing a square peg into a round hole at all.

      • Rob Staton

Taylor’s best quality, without a doubt, is rushing the edge — his balance & ability to bend and straighten to the QB, his dynamism as a pure pass rusher.

If/when he ever takes the field — that must be his role.

There’s a reason they gave him Von Miller’s number. It’s not because a shift to SAM linebacker should be in his future.

        • Henry Taylor

But he’d still get to do those things in nickel situations, the move to SAM would simply represent an opportunity to get a better front 7 on the field in base downs. Plus given their propensity to blitz more often now he could also rush the passer out of a 2 point stance, like Von Miller.

          • Rob Staton

I haven’t seen anything to think Darrell Taylor is a prospective SAM candidate.

To me you might as well say Cliff Avril could be a SAM.

His best quality, arguably his only quality, is rushing off the edge. His balance, his ability to bend the arc and straighten to the QB.

They took him to be a pass rusher. He is their prototype EDGE for size and physique. He’s a pass rusher.

            • Matt

Mentioned this below – my guess is that his leg injury was so serious that he is unable to play at a weight conducive to DE. I think this is about salvaging a terrible pick with a player who was seriously injured and is not expected to “make it back” to what he was.

              • Rob Staton

Well if that’s the case I suspect his career is over

                • Matt

Do you remember the pictures of him this year? He didn’t look like a football player. I’m very much worried this is a salvation effort, not some dynamic plan.

                • Ryan

Feel sorry for the guy, but that pick now looks so bad. Trading away a 3rd to move up 11 spots and still bypass Chase Claypool, Jaylon Johnson, Trevon Diggs, Cam Akers, Jalen Hurts, JK Dobbins, and Denzel Mims in the next 11 picks… this team, man.

                  • Rob Staton

                    Inept decision given the circumstances

      • cha

I’d argue the Seahawks could catch up with the rest of the league a little and run nickel more often.

Amadi deserves more playing time. And if Adams is still on the team, Blair as well.

        • Lewis

I argued this last year. Run more big nickel. Let Adams do his thing without compromising (hopefully) coverage over the top.

    • Matt

All the pictures of Taylor last year showed a guy with dramatic weight loss. I’m speculating, but maybe the leg injury was so bad that he can’t retain his original weight and to salvage his career – they are moving him to SAM where he doesn’t need to be in the 260s to contribute.

  40. RWIII

Thanks Rob. Nice article. Complete with a short synopsis on the top prospects in this 2021 N.F.L draft. If possible John Schneider and company need to look offensive line with their first pick. Preferably center or offensive tackle. I always love reading your mock drafts. You put out a ton of information.

  41. Edmonton Hawk

Here’s a possible later round or free agent prospect.
Canadian running back Kyle Borsa recorded a blazing forty-yard dash at the University of Regina pro day on Friday.

    The six-foot, 200-pound ball carrier ran a laser-timed 4.38 forty-yard dash.

Borsa demonstrated not only elite straight-line speed but also impressive quickness with a 6.95 three-cone and 4.19 shuttle. Strength and explosiveness won’t be an issue either — he recorded 22 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press, a ten-foot, three-inch broad jump and a 35-inch vertical leap.

  42. charlietheunicorn

Normally I would say let a guy who is 32 or older walk, but KJ played some of his best football in the last 2 seasons….. time to bring him in back on a fair deal ….. 4.5M or so…. putting off some tough decisions until 2022 in the LB corps.

    • Rob Staton

Yeah why not pay Wagner and Wright $21.5m this year to go with a first round pick.

One more year of massive resource at LB will probably produce a different result to the last few

      • Big Mike

And hey I know, after this year let’s pay an oft injured, poor in coverage box safety 18 per. Championship

      • dcd2

Should we play without a SAM this year then?

I’m not being a smart ass. We don’t have a SAM on the team right now. It’s a weird position for us. I guess we could try Barton there?

I don’t love spending a fortune at LB either, but KJ wasn’t the problem with the defense. He was its best player.

I’m genuinely wondering what the plan is at SAM. Move to a base big nickel, with Blair/Jamal?

        • Rob Staton

Personally, I’ve always just felt it’s a position you just fill. They used to have guys like Malcolm Smith, O’Brien Schofield and Barkevious Mingo doing that job.

I’m not against Wright coming back but I just think at some point we have to address the fact we’re spending an obscene amount at LB and S.

          • dcd2

I suppose filling the spot with JAG is possible, and might need to be the route.

No matter what we do, we’re going to be paying upwards of $20M to LB due to Bobby’s contract.

            • Rob Staton

Well you all know what I would’ve done.

I’d have moved off Wagner’s contract by now.

For the price of his $17m I would’ve rather paired KJ Wright and Haason Reddick with Jordyn Brooks.

              But what do I know?

              • Sea Mode

I really hate that we didn’t snag Reddick. Only cost $6m too. Give him $7m or $7.5m if that’s what it takes. Probably about the range they are going to end up giving KJ, who is 5 years older and offers no pass rush.

  43. SamprasSultanOfSwat

When it comes to Bobby Wagner. Next year(2022) the Hawks will ask Wagner to take a pay cut. If he refuses they will probably release him.

    • Rob Staton

Actually they’re more likely to extend him.

$17m is too much this year. If they’re not asking him to take a pay cut now, they won’t in 2022.

  44. SamprasSultanOfSwat

Agree. 17mil for Wagner is too much. He knows he is overpaid.

  45. Mr. Bitter

Love the MIA/Surtain pick. With the Parsons character concerns and Farley back surgery, Surtain should be the first defender off the board. I wouldn’t be completely shocked if ATL pulled the trigger at #4 if they can’t trade down.

It’s obvious that Miami is playing the long game and is all about amassing draft capital. What kind of compensation do you think the Dolphins could fetch for Xavien Howard?

    • Rob Staton

Not sure but it seems pretty clear that isn’t going to last in Miami

  46. Trevor

With the 56th pick in the 2021 NFL draft the Seahawks draft David Mills QB Stanford and Seahawks Twitter has a complete meltdown.

    • bmseattle

Well, it seems like Seahawks Twitter should be fine with that pick, since they seem to think we’ve filled all our needs in free agency and have a finished roster as is.

  47. Gary

Is anyone else as astounded as I am about the price of moving up in the draft? It cost the Niners two firsts (PLUS a third) just to move from 12 to 3. Then the Dolphins had to give up a first to move just six spots, from 12 to 6. I don’t know how this market is established but if I were a GM with more than one-year outlook, I would never make those moves. I know people will say when you think you have your long-term answer at QB, you have to act boldly and pull the trigger. But as many here have pointed out, you’re sacrificing your future for a lottery ticket that may or may not work out.

I feel like it’s easy to devalue future first rounders because you can’t associate those picks with a specific player yet. But once those drafts are upon you, I feel like many GMs will rue the decision they made in previous seasons and the fact that they are sitting there without a ticket to the dance. Look no further than our beloved Hawks, and how we wish they could address glaring needs but don’t have the draft capital to do so. First rounders are the way to secure elite talent for five years at bargain prices and should be a treasured commodity. Yet teams seem willing to give them away with little regard to the future. The cost of moving up just a couple of spots seems out of all proportion to the reward. Let the draft come to you and take BPA I say. That way you at least have a chance of assembling a stacked roster with affordable talent on both sides of the ball.

    • drrew76

It’s probably KJ or bust in terms of comp picks — if he signed somewhere, the Hawks could end up with a 4th from the Griff to Jax deal.

  49. dcd2

Watched some tape of Tyson Campbell (CB – UGA) this morning. He looks like a really good player.

I don’t think he’ll last to the 4th based on what I saw, but if he did… that would be a great pick.

Smooth footwork and hips. Good speed. Willing and capable run defender. Really liked him. I thought he even held his own against Devonta Smith. Smith got 3 or 4 catches against him, but they were all contested. When Smith would get matched up against the other db’s, Mac Jones went to him to the tune of 100+ and 2 TD’s.

VS Florida, he did a nice job on both Pitts and Toney. Pitts went up and got a nice jump ball over him, but he was right there.

His teammate Eric Stokes also has the measurables that the Hawks look for. He had an amazing pro-day but I didn’t really watch him, considering Rob had him gone before our first pick.

    • dcd2

Some amazing talent coming out of Georgia this year.

      Ojulari, Stokes, Cleveland, Campbell, McKitty….

Crap. I went to see if I was missing anyone and now see Campbell off the board at #40 in the latest 3 round mock. I was going off the horizontal board that had him as a 4th rounder.

      Back to the drawing board.

  50. BoiseSeahawk

Trying to become ‘cool’ with the idea of the 49ers getting Zach Wilson is tough but its helpful to look at Darrell Taylor’s highlight reel where he sacks him multiple times in one game.

    Release the Darrell!

    • Rob Staton

There’s no way the Jets pass on Wilson after that pro-day yesterday

      • BoiseSeahawk

        I hope you’re right 100%

I was reading some of their fan content on the NYJ side and they were talking up Justin Fields as if he should be the first overall QB taken!!! Haven’t heard that anywhere else but anything can happen with an organization as poorly run as the Jets.

        • Rob Staton

They probably don’t have the first clue on what they should be looking for.

Maybe if they’d watched the all-22 vs Indiana, studied his base and elongated throwing motion, watched the lack of anticipation and the WTF moments he has, they’d have a very different opinion.

It’s not the hardest thing in the world to watch where a QB’s feet are, where they hold the football, whether they throw with anticipation (just look at whether the receiver is looking for the ball when it’s released), whether they throw from different angles with accuracy, whether you can drive a ball into a tight window, whether you can improv.

Any Jets fan banging the table for Justin Fields over Zach Wilson is a plonker.

          • Big Mike

            “plonker”……nice

    • hawkdawg

That is way too cheap for the same player as last year. So the question may be whether we get that player. If we do, good signing.

  52. DrivByPoster

    Hi Rob,

Pat Macafee talking about the RW situation a couple of days ago. It’s not that though but the opening few lines about the abuse he is getting from Seahawks ‘fans’ that I thought might provide you with a bit of moral support!

    • Rob Staton

      I wish I had Pat’s salary too!

  53. Julian Langdon

There’s been plenty of talk today about the 17th game from next year. I know it’s a tough game and I think players are reluctant to put themselves at risk for more games than they have to, but if there is one thing I think the NFL lacks, it’s games. I get the offseason is fun and all, but a regular season that lasts just 4 months is nothing, it’s shorter than an English summer! I think dropping friendly’s down to 3 games is a good idea, how about one at Lumen Field, one away and one at Autzen Stadium where the Oregan Ducks play. That’d be a good marketing and publicity exercise.

For me a season of 18 regular games, would be a great fit for 32 teams and provide a rotation, where it wouldn’t be 4 years between certain teams playing each other. It’d look like this.

6 games every season against divisional opponents. 3 home, 3 away

4 games every season against all teams in the same geographical division of the other conference, ie for the Seahawks the AFC West. (Broncos, Raiders, Chargers and Chiefs) 2 home, 2 away

8 games against all the teams in two of the other six divisions in a 3 year rotation. 4 home, 4 away

This would mean less travelling distance due to a geographical bias for 10 games, which I’m sure helps with recover and I’d throw in an extra bye week in the season and an extra week’s gap at the end of the season before the playoffs to help with players recovery also. That’d be a good weekend to focus on the NCAA bowl games, giving them a higher profile before players declare for the draft.

The entire season would run from September until the SuperBowl in the first weekend in of March, With a greater chance of less inclement weather in March, the NFL might even expand the number of cities that it’ll allow to host the Superbowl. The NFL Combine and draft would be put back a month respectively.

That’d be my ideal season, and we’d have less of the year without games, rather than most of it, as is currently the case.

    • Ed

Like the SB in March though. Should be Sat night too. With two weeks off, shouldn’t matter Sat or Sun, especially since two playoff weeks have Sat games already.

I like the idea of having odd number of games, so you either have a winning or losing record. Make it 19 (won’t happen, just saying).

I would rather see no preseason games, or make the preseason games like your practice squad and mostly backups, with players that played over 50% snaps only allowed to play a total of 1 quarter the entire preseason.

Also, would have a midseason all teams bye as well as byes only 4 weeks after midseason bye so you don’t have one team with bye week 4 and another team bye week 13. That’s just dumb.

      • Julian Langdon

I believe, and maybe it played out this last season when not having a proper pre season, that pre season games are quite good for conditioning players fitness? It’s also a good exercise to try certain plays in a game scenario and for rookies to become accustomed to a match routine and new environment without the same pressure of in season.

Having an even number of games allows a schedule of a certain symmetry that I like. A 8-8 or 9-9 season is always going to be a meh season anyway.

    • Sea Mode

      Cliff Avril
      @cliffavril
      ·2h

One more game to the @Nfl season might not sound like much to fans or ownership but that’s brutal for the players…

      • Julian Langdon

Yes I saw that, but with less travel, more bye weeks and a shorter pre season, that might compensate?

Also, I’m not entirely on board with what Cliff says, because most teams play a short 16 game season. Other players then play on in the post season and all players are happy to play more games to get to a Superbowl? So essentially playing 2 extra regular season games would be tougher on 4 extra teams in a season than is currently the case?

  54. charlietheunicorn

I was just poking around center rankings. A guy who might be 2nd round or 3rd round material is intriguing to me. Quinn Meinerz / Wisconsin-Whitewater / Senior who is 6’3″ 320 lbs.

    https://www.profootballnetwork.com/quinn-meinerz-nfl-draft-player-profile-uww-center/

Nice read about his background. Definitely keeping an eye on this guy… since his upside is pretty high and he is projected to be able to play at OG or C in the NFL. And hey, he smashed guys at the Senior Bowl.

    Jarran Reed to the Chiefs.

    Those were the days.

    • cha

      Good grief.

      • Rob Staton

In an alternative universe the Seahawks have Clark instead of LJ Collier, Reed instead of Al Woods and IDK maybe draft someone like Daviyon Nixon or one of these DE’s in round one with actual athleticism and don’t have a metal rod in their leg.

        • cha

There’s no one on the inside with pass rush bona fides right now.

Poona has some upside but he has 2.5 career sacks.

Collier has 3 and hasn’t shown all that much.

Mone only booked 228 snaps last year.

Al Woods’ specialty is short yardage stuffing.

          Lattimore is…Lattimore.

For Jarran Reed and the #Chiefs, it’s a 1-year deal worth up to $7M with $5M guaranteed, source said. Very nice in this market, with a chance to cash in next year. Had it been about the money, he would’ve stayed in Seattle.

          • Trevor

That last line says it all really.

            • Tomas

For how much longer do we have to pretend that Carroll has fostered such a “great culture” in Seattle?

              • Rohan Raman

Well, it’s not like the Chiefs just made a SB. And it’s not like one of the DE’s for the Chiefs happened to be a major part of Reed’s best season.

              • dcd2

This is sadly true. I wonder how much RW’s impact on the ‘culture’ factors in too.

I get the feeling most of the NFL is cringing right along side us with every Bain-inspired tweet, fragrance, man-bun, Ellen show, bible verse and teammate under the bus that Wilson airs.

    • Scot04

To think how many here wanted to keep those two long term. This is like a big gut punch. Great pickup by the Chiefs as usual.

Basically a kiss my A** to Pete since it’s only a 1 yr deal, & he’s basically making the same he would have made had he stayed and let them restructure.
Couldn’t work out much better for Reed.

      • 12th chuck

doesn’t seem like the Seahawks are the place people want to play. lost out on an o lineman last week hawks offered more cash, he said no thanks. I doubt Sherman wants to come back either

        • Scot04

Well if I’m Reed and I know that Wilson isn’t a certainty for 2021; I’d be wanting a more long term commitment too. Otherwise best going to a team and taking that same 1year deal. He knows Mahomes isn’t going anywhere. He went from a chaotic mess to a stable well run franchise.

    • BruceN

He didn’t want to give the Hawks a break but signed with the Chiefs for $5M guaranteed, up to $7M stretch goals). I find it interesting that players feel disrespected when given the choice but then sign much less else where they realize where the market is at.

    • Rob Staton

I’d rather take a chance on a guy like this on the cheap than pay someone else $18-20m for the same role

      • lil’stink

Let a rookie like Diablo battle it out with Ryan Neal. The only players on defense worth that kind of $$ are pass rushers and maybe a shutdown corner.

        • BobbyK

Or battle it out with a guy they drafted in the 2nd round only two years ago. So many wasted or dumb picks.

      • CaptainJack

He would be an instant upgrade to adams. So glad we cut reed though so we could sign with kansas city for pennies.

        • dcd2

Really? A mid round rookie is an instant upgrade to an all-pro?? On what planet?

I know people want to cast Adams off, but let’s be real. We (self included) were all hyped about Obi Melonfawu a couple of years ago too. He did jack squat with his physical profile.

I think the pendulum has swung too far, with comments like this. Jamal is a really good player and he’s unlikely to be traded.

We overpaid for him by a boatload, and didn’t have a plan for him when he got here. I’ll give you those points, but come on.

Yes. Adams can’t cover. Easily injured. Small for the position. He shouldn’t be starting on this team.

Wow. Can I sell you my lottery ticket for $1000? It might be worth $1M after all.

I’m going to go ahead and bookmark this comment. I’m sure it will age like fine wine.

              • CaptainJack

I’d be thrilled if we managed to trade him away for as much as a third round pick. I thought Ryan Neal easily matched him on the field.

Reed basically signed for what he would have made over the 5M we still have to pay him. So really he just went to a better team for the same money.
We cut Reed because he wanted a long term commitment here. Seahawks weren’t asking him to take a paycut, just a restructure. Sounded like it went badly. It’s a shame really that it for what was just for cap space.
The Seahawks shouldn’t be in this position. It’s feeling more and more like they’re done with their offseason unless they trade Russ. Might just be me, but it feels like we’re going to keep Adams and possibly play hardball with him, and threaten him with the franchise tag. A dumb decision as he should be traded, but it doesn’t even feel like they’re heading that way at all. I hope I’m wrong.

Oh, they’re not done. Just wait until John Schneider turns a late second round pick into 6 seventh rounders! Draft day magic. I can’t wait.

I want to clear here, so that this comes off in the spirit that it is offered. I agree with you point-by-point:
    -Adam’s is a great player.
-He is (somewhat) unlikely to be traded.
    -We certainly did overpay.
But I also want to ask if you (or others) agree that it is important, if not imperative for JS to get us back into this draft and at least make a decent run at restocking the roster with some young, cheaper talent?
And for any who will grant that, what assets do we currently possess that can be employed in such an effort?
I may be ‘thinking inside the box’ too much, as it were, but I don’t see a ton of ways to do it. We’ve had a somewhat more encouraging free agency period so far when compared to last year’s (okay, I know-that’s setting the bar low, but even so) and I’d sure like to see a draft that was at least frosting for the cupcake.
Love to hear back on this, though I need a bit more time to read prior entries in the column as some folks may already have addressed the matter.
    Cheers.

Yes I think we need to get back into the draft. Only real options are trading Wilson, Wagner, and Adams. That’s about it as far as I can see. They won’t and shouldn’t trade lockett or Brown.
Preferably Adams and or Wagner make the most sense

i agree that the Seahawks badly need to get back into this draft. imo, PC has a proven philosophy — play tough in the trenches, pressure with four, run the ball with authority, complete the circle, etc. — but to win playing his preferred style, there needs to be talent. and lack of talent (and attitude) is one of the major issues facing the team right now. unfortunately, they also have major holes and not a lot of depth at key positions. trading Bobby Wagner and Jamal Adams, arguably the most talented players on defense, might seem counterintuitive. but their combined cost is far too high and, as we’ve already seen with Adams, limits the team’s ability to address other areas of need, and, indeed, play the style that PC wants. the draft is the best way to acquire cheap talent. PCJS had historically good drafts from 2010-12. if they can find some of that magic again, then this team has a path to contention. admittedly, that’s a big IF.

Now, as I scroll up (down?) I’m seeing the name Divine Diablo, and really liking the sound of it from what I’ve read (though I haven’t had time to watch any tape yet-gotta get to that).

Do we get at least a 2022 compensatory pick for Reed? Very bad moment, he’s an improvement for the Chiefs and we should have tried a bit longer to get something in return.

No compensation picks on released players.
