New mock draft podcast

We have another (longer) podcast dropping tomorrow going through a few different Seahawks topics. However, here’s a quick 25-minutes on my recent three-round mock draft with Brandan Schulze…

    First!

This is the content I want injected straight into my veins.

Ty Rob for keeping this hawks addict satiated.

    • FlappyHawkLord69

      Agreed! Great discussion. Thank you

  2. Sea Mode

I just did a deep dive on WR statistics in areas that I believe matter most for Seahawks WRs.

My conclusions are that there is a clear top three:
    1. Terry McLaurin
    2. Gary Jennings
    3. Marquise Brown

and another two in a tier after that:
    4. N’Keal Harry
    5. Jamal Custis

    with a couple more possibilities
    6. AJ Brown
    7. Keelan Doss (need 40yd time, level of competition is a concern)

Once again, this isn’t game tape at all. This is just key stats (not production).

Amazing that the first four names also meet the eye test and have been some of the players we have most discussed here on SDB throughout the entire process.

I’ll continue to go deeper later and explain the analysis more in detail.

    • Trevor

Look forward to seeing what you looked at Seamode. McLaurin is my favourite WR in the class and I would be so pumped to see him in a Hawks uniform. Incredible special teams player as well. He is exactly the type of young player that could be a real building block on the field and in the locker room.

    • GoHawksDani

Why did you left Campbell out?

    • Eli

I think Darius Slayton is being overlooked quite a bit this draft cycle, and would be a perfect fit for what we want out of our receivers

I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I want Harry, Paris Campbell, or an Edge rusher like Clemson Farrell if he falls. Some mocks think he will, but I won’t hold my breath. Harry adjusts to every ball and has great hands. He’s physical and he makes plays with the ball in his hands. He will make the run I g game better as well. Campbell is a former RB who learned how to be super productive at WR and he’s explosive. He may be just scratching the surface, and how good would he look across from Lockett?

    • Hawktalker#1

With you, but I am not big on Harry. Would prefer another option at WR.

      • CaptainJack

Agree, to me there’s not much separating JJ Arcega-Whiteside and Harry, and you can draft Arcega-Whiteside later.

        • Van Gogh

You ever see N’Keal play? Watched him for 3 years in Tempe. He’s a Stud. No comparison to A-Whiteside.

          • drewdawg11

I’ve also seen Harry in person a couple of times. He’s physically imposing and he is actually better with the ball in his hands than people realize. His biggest issue is just learning to run routes at full speed. In college he could sort of just win by jumping over people. He’s sudden enough and athletic enough to become a better route runner and gain some separation at times. His hands are outstanding. He just makes plays you need him to make.

  4. pugs1

Any thoughts on Darius Slayton WR Auburn as a later round pick for the Seahawks? He was a big play deep threat for the Tigers.

    • Sea Mode

18.6% drop rate, only 48.6 catch % in 2018 and only 29.6% catch rate on deep balls. That’s the worst drop rate in the entire class if my calculations are correct. I’ve ruled him out because of that alone. We want reliable targets.

      • Eli

Do you know how much of that is on him and how much is on outside factors like Stidham? Auburn offense took a HUGE step back this past season.

      • Pugs1

Not arguing with the numbers but their OL was awful and caused lots of problems for their offense. Curious on those numbers from 2017?

  5. Trevor

Jeffery Simmons supposed to be an upcoming VMAC visitor.

If the Hawks could get Simmons and McLaurin with first two picks I would do backflips!

    • Hawktalker#1

      Ditto

      • Hawktalker#1

However, McLaurin with the the first pick seem extremely unlikely. He should go much earlier than our first (post trade down) draft pick available, per Robs mock. If not, get him.

        • CaptainJack

I actually like McLaurin more than Harry

I think McLaurin will go round 2. I dont see him in round one at all.

          • Rob Staton

If you see him in R2 he could easily make R1. Because there’s at best 10-15 R1 talents only in this class.

            • CaptainJack

Who takes him round one though?
Raiders might but they signed Tyrell Williams JJ Nelson and Ryan Grant to go along with AB. They need a tight end and they also need to add to their defense.

              • Rob Staton

There are teams including the Seahawks who will consider a big nickel in late R1

                • CaptainJack

                  Talking about McLaurin here

                  • Rob Staton

Apologies. But yes — McLaurin has a shot at R1. The complete package.

        • McZ

McLaurin is WR #18 at NFL.com, and #16 at Walterfootball.

He is a very good player… 20 percent of the time. I don’t get, what people are seeing in him.

    http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/26465504/alliance-american-football-players-signed-nfl-teams

The league did exactly what it was supposed to do, give guys a look for NFL teams to sign later on.
It is very sad they can’t get the NFL to finance and support this venture more. They specifically need to have free TV games on NBC/CBS/FOX so that the brand can grow.

    • Georgia Hawk

NFL has the NCAA that does it for them, does it on a bigger stage, and ensures there are no contractual obligations to worry about. Why would the NFL do anything other than what they currently do?

      • Group Captain Mandrake

The same reason that baseball has lower divisions, the NBA has the D-League and MLS has developmental teams. We all know that college players don’t necessarily translate to the NFL (just look at how many tackles become guards) and this gives them a way to further evaluate players in a similar pro system. In reality, it would be nothing but a drop in the bucket cost wise for the NFL and expands the potential talent pool (think about all the injuries where they bring in some guy who hasn’t played at all in a year off the streets).

    @TonyPauline

“We spoke about Seattle trading back during last week’s edition of The Draft Analyst’s Podcast. One name to keep on the back burner if they trade down- Juan Thornhill/Virginia who they would move back to cornerback.”

    • CaptainJack

He has 31.something inch arms though. Doesn’t check the 32 box.

      • Rob Staton

That doesn’t matter because as we’ve been highlighting they’re nailed on looking at these guys to play nickel.

  8. CaptainJack

I really hope Jeffrey Simmons slips to round 2. I think he will. He’d be hard to resist there. Could even slide to late round 2. Look at how far Clark fell, and Clark wasn’t recovering from an ACL either.

  9. CaptainJack

No special traits. Disappeared at times during the season.
Harry has some awesome circus catches in his highlight reel but to me he’s slow and not really that spectacular consistently. Pass.

  10. CaptainJack

Does Thornhill really go late round one?

I just feel like he’s more of a round 3 talent. But then again Byron Jones went round 1 so…

I’ll be bummed if our first pick is a safety to corner convert. Trey flowers was found in the 5th and I think there’s plenty of Trey flowers types this year rounds 3-7.

    • Rob Staton

Thornhill wouldn’t be Flowers though. He’d be a dynamic big nickel. An increasingly important role these days.

    • Sea Mode

Agree completely on Thornhill R3 grade. If he goes earlier than that, it’s because a team is buying into his athletic upside.

But honestly, I don’t like him. Hard to argue with his production, but he doesn’t come across as gritty enough on the field or in interviews for my liking.

I still think we go DL or WR with our first pick and maybe look at S/CB in R3.

    • GoHawksDani

I’d be fine with Savage being our #1 pick. But don’t use him as nCB, but deep safety and use Hill as big nickle

  11. millhouse-serbia

I am filling out my draft table, and I am shocked how low are Omenihu and Mclaurin on Zierlein draft board.

    Mclaurin – 123

    Omenihu – 168

    • Rob Staton

      Too low

  12. millhouse-serbia

And while looking at all these draft boards one thing stand out…all of the FS/Big nickel options are graded in 30-60 range…so if seahawks want one of them they will almost certainly need to take him with their first pick after trade back…because as it sands now it is hard to believe that seahawks will have two 2nd round picks…
I am speaking abot Murphy, Thornhill, Savage, CGJ, Adderley…

Tell, Hooker etc will be available later…

    • Sea Mode

Man, PFF likes Murphy A LOT. #6 overall player on their top 250 big board.

But for me right now, give me Marvell Tell in R3-R4 for outside CB convert with flexibility to shift inside if matchup dictates.

I think for secondary, PC can make the most of gems identified a bit later on in the draft, as he has up until now. And we already have an athletic big nickel option in Akeem King who has shown promise already last season.

Anyone watched Marquise Blair? Nagy says he is rangy and physical and he has some high grades on PFF.

      • Rob Staton

I don’t think he’s as good as the #6 player (but PFF’s always way out there for draft stuff). But Murphy is a superb player. Hard to pick holes in his game. He’s just not an amazing athlete.

Marquise Blair is very underrated IMO. Round two.

      • Volume12

You take Tell and you better move him to corner. He’s not a safety.

  13. Rob4q

    Hey Rob,

What do you think about Sheldrick Redwine from Miami as a mid round pick to fill the FS/slot/Big Nickel role? He seems like an interesting prospect…

    https://www.nfl.com/prospects/sheldrick-redwine?id=32195245-4479-0651-4e15-c041fee677e0

    • Rob Staton

Not really studied him yet but will try before the draft

  14. UKAlex6674

This is a quiet period after the crazy first wave of FA and before the draft. There isn’t much going on. We can all quote from other sources and put individual spins on it, and it is the responsibility of the media to create storylines, maybe where there aren’t any. Personally – and I hope I am right because we would be foolish to lose a franchise QB – I think there is nothing in the Schefter thoughts and comments.

    • Rob Staton

I’ve worked in the media all my adult life.

It’s not the job of the media to create storylines.

It’s the job of some shows and presenters to do that (eg the hot take shows).

Adam Schefter is a very serious, extremely well connected journalist who deserves a lot more respect than he’s getting here.
