New podcast appearance: Pedestrian Podcast

This week I was invited onto the Pedestrian Podcast with Stu and Adam to discuss the future of Pete Carroll, Russell Wilson and the Seahawks.

It’s a good conversation so be sure to check it out below…

Always love these. One thing that I haven’t seen or heard discussed is the possibility of Pete stepping down as coach and remaining EVP, overseeing the football operations. Due to his age, wouldn’t relief from the daily grind of coaching be a benefit?

    • Cysco

It’s been discussed, but most view that as unrealistic. Pete is too much of a control freak to give up the coaching duties. It seems like coaching is what really drives him. Additionally, I think that the personnel decisions have been the biggest issue/failing with Pete. The last thing I would want would be to make that his main job.

It’d be more realistic for things to go the other way. Pete becomes “just” the head coach and gives up the management stuff to John or someone else. With that scenario, I don’t see Pete doing it voluntarily. His ego would allow it. I actually think that’s where we are and why things have been so quiet. The silence could be because that’s what was presented to Pete yesterday and he is either considering it or is negotiating an exit with ownership because he won’t accept what would be viewed publicly as a demotion.

      • Hawk Finn

Yeah, it’s almost too bad because as Rob mentioned in the podcast, even his presence as a figurehead/motivator HC while delegating playcalling to established OC/DC would be a welcome change. He can maintain the vision, strategy, and culture while allowing others to evolve the game plan. What a missed opportunity if he refuses to cede total control for pride.

    • Rob Staton

I don’t think there’s any chance of this.

Pete would explode if he had to sit in an office. It’d be like Bear Gryls working at a desk in a shirt and tie.

      • Roy Batty

We talked about this weeks ago.

The idea of Pete Carroll sitting in a luxury box watching the game isn’t realistic.

Can anyone imagine the gum chewing ball of energy relegated to a suite, sitting next to business people who likely never played college ball, let alone professional ball?

It would actually be sad, to me.

  2. Mr drucker in hooterville

Then just fire him. Yank off that bandaid.

  3. Mr drucker in hooterville

I rather enjoy 3 blokes talking about football and it not be about pitches and friendlies.

  4. Peter

Always enjoy when you get together with Adam and Stu.

Really nailed it when discussing local fans vs. outside fans. And why one fan base might be content with 10-7 forever.

Really enjoyed Stu talking in disbelief about the “bounce back seahawks,” who also let the hapless Lions score 29. To quote him because it squares with my mood: “nah, I’m not having it..”

And finally. Hat’s off to the most succint and funny breakdown of college QB’s.

I think an important point was made about RW not having his press conference yet.

Last year PC’s was Monday and RW’s was Thursday from Mexico. He tactfully refuted nearly all of PC’s garbage about the offense with a great big smile.

You’d think the local press would be all over the fact that he hasn’t had his say yet. It’s obvious why – he’s waiting just like the rest of us to see what is decided.

    • MychestisBeastmode

There you go again with another good point.

How is it that nobody in Seattle media has you or Rob on their payroll?

  6. Adam Nathan

Thanks to all for listening, really pleased you enjoy the show

    • cha

Adam what is the blog address for your guys’ work?

    • Dave1401

Love it, keep up the good work!

      • Adam Nathan

We don’t have a blog as such, but if you follow the UK Seahawks group on twitter, or the pedestrian podcast on Facebook or instagram, you’ll find Stu’s writing links and links to all of our other shows etc.

  7. SonGoku

When do you think we’ll get some news about how the meeting went? Isn’t it a bit strange that there’s still no information out there?

    • Mr Drucker in hooterville

That there hasn’t been a leak tells me a change of some sort is coming. If Things were decided to stay the same with PC, he’d be leaking it or looking for Mike Salk’s cell #

My cheerless thoughts this morning: Jody is more likely to add a year to Pete’s contract than significantly limit his powers, much less remove him. The most positive thought I can muster at the moment is that at least in 2022 I’ll have two teams to root for: the Hawks and whatever team Russell Wilson is playing for

I listened to the Pedestrian Podcast last night and enjoyed every second of it. Greatly appreciate the efforts and talent of all involved.

    • Starhawk29

I disagree here. My father works at Microsoft and had some interaction with Paul before he retired. He sees Jody as a hard-nosed business woman that is not going to leave good enough alone. I’m cautiously optimistic something will happen, even if it’s just a mandate to fire KNJ and sign some bigger FAs.

      • MychestisBeastmode

Now that the cat’s out of the bag, Starhawk29, it seems you indirectly know more about Jody than just about anyone on this site (or any NFL circles for that matter). I’m sure we’d all appreciate any additional insights into her work ethic, motivations, what makes her tick, etc. Thanks 👍

I’m being mostly tongue-in-cheek, but seriously, nobody knows her thought process and any additional psychological profiling as it pertains to the Seahawks would be welcomed with open arms.

        • Starhawk29

Haha I just hope I’m right on this one. Still guessing like everyone else, but thought it was encouraging to hear her described as a capable leader.

      • Roy Batty

There is a reason Google Cloud, Amazon and others are in high rise buildings in South Lake Union. Jody Allen had some say in the way Vulcan strong-armed the city to change the height limitations in that neighborhood. They bought up much of the land and weren’t about to relegate it to 2 story apartments and parking lots.

Whether that type of business approach is applied to the Seahawks, who Knows?

        It would be nice, though

        • Starhawk29

That is my understanding of it as well. As has been mentioned before, I just hope she cares about the success of the franchise.

          • Ben

I didn’t realize she was the CEO of Vulcan from the beginning. She’s got quite a track record of success and business acumen.

            • Rob Staton

              Such as…???

    That’s good, right?

    • BobbyK

No. That’s not good. It’s better to have guys like Pocic, Fuller, Jackson (and give up a 5th round pick for), Everett, Mayowa, and Hyder. That’s the glue that holds a Super Bowl winner together!

      • Mr. Drucker in hooterville

Yes. A Squad full of 7’s rather than some 10’s at key positins!!!!

        • BobbyK

I’d argue Everett is a 6 and the rest of the bums are 5 or below. Like Pocic is more like a 3.

      Unger, Linsley, Humphrey…..PC/JS hate Centers

Good like when lime juice squirts in your eye as you’re trying to slip the slice into your Corona 👑 bottle.

    • MychestisBeastmode

Fail… My post above was meant in response to Cha re: Kinsley being a BAMF

      • MychestisBeastmode

        *Linsley.

Fail x2, but I blame autocorrect this time rather than my fat thumbs.

        • TomLPDX

You could’ve blamed the lime you know! 😉

  11. Roy Batty

    Loved the discussion.

The level-headed talk about the state of this franchise, all by 3 people living a literal ocean away, says lot about the local media and fan base.

    Thank you guys for this.

Also, the Boris quip was a nice bit of levity at the beginning.

  12. Jordan

Of course Bobby got some votes, but also congrats to Diggs, Brooks, Dickson and Bellore on receiving all-pro votes. Though I feel like Homer is clearly the dude who warranted all-pro votes as the special teamer.

  13. Gaux Hawks

Any chatter coming out of New Orleans yet? Direction of franchise, quarterback, coach, etc.??

I’m desperate… and anything will help fill the huge vacancy that the Seahawks left in my directionless soul.

  14. Ashish

Yesterday’s comment by Rob regarding when the last coach was fired has kept my hopes up. So I’m checking the news constantly. Also NFL article did mention about Seahawks can be a surprise on coach vacancy.
    Allen, please make it happen.

The Packers signed LB De’Vondre Campbell to a one-year, $2M deal on June 9th. He had been on the. open market for almost 3 months.

Today he was named a First-Team All Pro.

GM Brian Gutekunst doing work yet again.

  16. Gross MaToast

Jody Allen’s statement of support for the head coach, staff, and direction of the team sure is taking a long time to draft. Pete told us they were all in complete alignment, so I’m not sure what the holdup might be.

Far be it from me to speculate, but could there be an attempt to wrestle some power and control back from Pete and set him up as a Sabanesque-type head coach primarily responsible for press conferences and pre-game speeches before ultimately deciding it’s easier to simply cut the cord and move in a different direction? Again, I’m not going to speculate, but a statement of support announcing complete alignment seems like a two paragraph press release.

    • 805Hawk

Im shocked there hasn’t been a leak of some sort on what went on in yesterday’s meeting. Maybe it’s continued into today? Worst nightmare is we hear nothing for weeks and just have to assume things aren’t changing at all. Of course, then we will be waiting on Russ to have his say.

      • Gross MaToast

It probably won’t take weeks and I think we know where Russ stands. Pete tried to speak for all involved, but not sure anyone bought it.

    • GaiusMarius

You’d think there would be candor at the meeting.

Allen & Co.: Pete, we love what you’ve done, but we need to shift some things around (description of reduced powers and revised role).

      Carroll: Hell no.

Allen & Co: We really appreciate your time with us! We’ll prep the press conference, describe it as a new direction and amicable parting of ways.

      • Gross MaToast

I’m not sure why it should be any more difficult than this.

    • Blitzy the Clown

I’ve thought for a while now that this process will take as long as a couple of weeks because I think:

      1. Carroll has convinced Allen in their meet yesterday that he should return, provided Wilson returns as well;

      2. It will take a period of time, maybe a week, for Wilson to effectively communicate to the team he will not return if Carroll does;

      3. It will take another period of time, perhaps a few days, for Allen to make her final decision, which I believe will be to move on from Carroll while retaining JS and Wilson.

      • GaiusMarius

I’d take that. It would have us keep our franchise QB and make big coaching changes, granted it would take longer to make that obvious. Still, I’d take it!

  17. CL

So let’s assume the rumors were true:
JS is getting control over personell decisions and no other changes.

What do you think Russ will do?
I have a hard time thinking he wouldn’t force a trade. I really think that he only stays if there’ll be significant changes.

Fingers crossed that Jody will make the right decision.
