New podcast: Looking ahead to London

If you missed it yesterday, don’t forget to check out this breakdown of 30 draft prospects separated into four tiers. It’s early but already the 2019 draft is taking shape in a really good way for the Seahawks.

Here’s this weeks podcast, reflecting on Seattle’s strong performance against the Rams and looking ahead to the Wembley game:

It will be interesting to see how offense works when teams take away Run game.

    • Rob Staton

Good luck taking it away based on recent evidence. They will have to seriously commit to it. And that helps the passing game big time.

  2. UKAlex6674

I am PUMPED to be lucky enough to be going on Sunday. Who else is going? How far are you travelling? This is so exciting I actually think I am going to explode.

    • Trevor

Congrats that is awesome! I wish I was going.

    • EranUngar

I’ll be flying to London from Israel arriving Thursday morning.

It will be my first time watching the Seahawks play after following the team since 1979 and the 2nd football game I see live in a stadium.

      • UKAlex6674

EranUngar that is awesome! It’s my first game too. Although I’ve only been supporting them since 1984 . What was your first game?

        • EranUngar

My first and only game was The Jets playing the Raiders in Shea stadium in 1979. Kenny “the snake” Stabler….

    • Ghost Mutt

I’m flying over from Ireland Saturday morning. Can’t describe how excited I am – I’ve been to a few of the Wembley games but can’t believe I’m finally going to see the Hawks live.

      • UKAlex6674

Which part of Ireland? My girlfriend has family in Carlow. The only other live game I have seen was waaaaaaay back in 1988 at Wembley. I watched the Dolphins v 49ers as part of the American Bowl series! Was only a preseason game though.

        • Ghost Mutt

I’m from Kerry originally but, like pretty much everyone here, moved to Dublin years ago for work.

You a Londoner? Never tempted to check out any of the other Wembley games? I was lucky enough to head to the Chargers / Saints shootout years ago – really great game

  3. Georgia Hawk

I am incredibly shocked and pleased with how the O line looks in its current state…and Ifedi has been a HUGE part of that. Night and day play out of him this year. Arguably the best run blocking O Line right now, and Pass blocking actually looks serviceable. Big question is how can it hold up in terms of health the rest of the season.

    • Darnell

The cool thing is that there is actual depth now. I’m not sure I’d be particularly worried if Pocic, Fant or Hunt had to play. Jamarco Jones next year too.

      • Hawk Eye

a functioning o line and some depth. Finally.
In a few years, some of the media experts will still talk about Seattle’s terrible o line and give them a F for their draft because they did not take a tackle with their first pick.

now if they can solve the pass rush problem in the off season and if some of the kids can play and develop, we can watch Pete go for one more championship before he rides off into the sunset.
And hopefully, do to the Rams what he did to the 49’rs, make them our b*%#h

        • McZ

That’s because they had one-and-a-half serviceable games, minus 4th quarter vs Rams perhaps. If they have played five of them, and when passing comes back over 200yd, then we can consider the unit fixed.

Solari takes the approach I wanted to see for the better of the last four years. Let experienced players play until the younger, specialized positional depth pick is ready. Then make another mid-to-late-round depth pick. Pats are doing this for years, and they always end up with a top 5 OL. Caroline did it with Moton, Rams with Havenstein. It works.

  4. Kenny Sloth

Where are yall getting your cutups now that Draft Breakdown is totally defunct? Just Youtube and live games??

  5. Kenny Sloth

Jordan Brailford off to a blistering start with 12.5 tfl and 9 sacks already. Only 249 lbs

  6. vrtkolman

Big shoutout to Kenny! Last year, you called that Ifedi would improve big time in 2018 while everyone else (me included) was done with him.

    • Kenny Sloth

It’s such a common theme on the OL to see improvement from year 2-3. The penaltys were the worst thing and that’s almost always going to regress to mean.

Helps that he has a few monsters next to him. Duane Brown set the tone on Sunday on offense for me.

I can’t help but wonder what the OL might have looked like this year under Cable. No doubt we see some improvement, but I think the fresh faces were important on both sides of the ball.

The bigger improvement has come in the coordination of the running game rather than the actual education/development of OL under Schottenheimer imo

  7. Pran

Prosise on trade block. Hope at least a 5th.

    • Rob Staton

It’s funny how the internet works. John Clayton just tosses Prosise’s name out there for Philly and now he’s on the trading block apparently. Someone better let the Seahawks know!

      • Pran

i think there is some fire…Philly beat reporters also mentioning CJ as one of the prospect.

      • Darnell

Clayton is a big time pro though. He doesn’t really wildly put stuff out there for attention. A lot connections and pretty dialed in from decades in the industry.

        • Rob Staton

I wouldn’t disagree that Clayton is connected and a good pro. But he also doesn’t break any news these days and mostly just offers opinions.

          • HENRY

How about Mckissic..does he see any touches when he comes back? Carson/Davis are rolling and they’re bringing in Penny but I feel like Mckissic posses a different skillset. Too many good backs but not enough touches. Good problem though.

            • Rob Staton

Sure, there’d be a role for him when he returns.

    • Kenny Sloth

Some of y’all are gonna be mad when he gets healthy in a contract year next season and leaves for nothing.

    • 80SLargent

Regardless of if it’s true or not, it would sure make a lot of sense to get draft compensation for a guy who basically seems has been pushed to the very bottom of the depth chart.
I still think the deadline is going to be pretty interesting. Seattle has to try to find some way to get some picks, since they currently hold only 4 for 2019.

      • EranUngar

They owe us a great dill.

They got Bennett for a 5th and when NE called and offered a 3rd, JS said he already shook hands on it when he could have gone back on his word for a better dill.

      • cha

Prosise has little to no trade value. It would probably be a conditional 2020 pick.

        • Rob Staton

They might give us a couple of protein bars too.

        • 80SLargent

Seattle once got a 7th rounder from Carolina for Kevin Norwood, who did precisely nothing in the NFL. A 7th rounder could turn into a couple protein bars, or they could turn into Chris Carson or Malcolm Smith.
At least Prosise has flashed (albeit briefly) some upper level talent in primetime, and it seems like there’s a lot of RB needy teams popping up around the league, so there could be some value for him – or a guy like Mike Davis.
Then again, I’d sure like to see a couple more “shock the world” games from Prosise, and I really like the idea of having an overabundance of talented and healthy RBs.
I’m really interested in seeing how Seattle plans on adding to their 4 2019 draft picks, besides trading down a billion times. Damnit, why did Earl have to go break his leg again?

  8. Stevo

I still can’t believe the NFL scheduled a Seahawks game in London just because Rob Staton lives there. But really, Rob deserves at least one a season, don’t you think?

    Enjoy the game, Rob!

    Go Seahawks Running Game!!!

    • Rob Staton

      Thanks man 👍🏻

Time to start moving on from all the drama/butt-hurt over the way the LOB went out and remembering the amazing things they did during 81 regular-season starts together…

    PC Tues. presser notes:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUgkYA417FQ

    On playing in London:
    – London game prep. has taken a lot of time and resources. Fun challenge.
    – Sleep on the way over then stay up once they get there. Every team has its own approach.
    – PC has never been.

    On the Raiders:
    – Star studded offense. QB completed 70%+. Lots of playmaking ability. They’ve been close in every game and PC expects them to get going soon results wise.
    – PC’s favorite Marshawn memory: probably New Orleans game. (taking the easy answer…)
    – On Marshawn being tough to handle for any HC, how PC handled it: “we had a great time together”. Gave him a fresh start from Buffalo. Brought toughness and mentality. “We went through a lot together and I have tremendous respect for the guy. Look forward to playing against guys I like.” Had a huge impact on the team in his own way, just like Earl, Kam, and now Fluker.

    On Offense:
    – It feels like we’ve re-discovered our style. Made a big turn that took way longer than PC ever wanted, but now we’ve got to keep it going. “This is who we are and who we will be.”
    – Having different RBs have success speaks to the commitment from A-Z. OL has been allowed to come off the ball more. Balance finally right between run and play-action.
    – On Penny: dying to get in there, just not enough opportunities so far. He’s fully back from offseason injury that set back his development a bit. PC admits Penny is frustrated (but in a classy, team-first way) and PC wants it that way, fire lit under him.
    – ADB in good shape coming back from injury, ball just didn’t go his way much.
    – OL will keep rolling with Fluker and Sweezy, but are confident in Pocic, Fant, Hunt as well. Those two have brought experience, communication, toughness, and strength.
    – Solari was instrumental in bringing in Fluker, knowing the kind of guy he would be in the locker room as well as on the field. Loves the game, approaches it right, knew the system already, helped the others learn it. A favorite in the locker room wherever he goes.

    On Defense:
    – Mingo learned a lot, hadn’t played WILL before. Will continue to play a lot of snaps, but not as many as last week. (89 snaps on Def and ST too much)
    – Rasheem Green is a couple weeks away.
    – KJ is running again but won’t be rushed since they have the break coming up anyway.
    – Praise for Tre Flowers causing turnovers. Risk with starting young players early is they have bad experience and can lose confidence. Tre is past that now, on his way to being a “legit starter”. 😉
    – What PC saw in him as a SS that has translated to CB: he’s physical, aggressive, and makes plays on the ball in the air.
    – On tackling issues vs. Gurley: he’s just really hard to bring down if given space. Few guys can do it.
    – Has limited contact in practice hurt our tackling? Yes, but there are other ways to get better. Imagination is a huge part of it. Visualizing what speed+angle+technique it would take to make the play even when they are not going full speed/contact at practice. Earl was one of the very best at that (often off in his own “zone”), and the results showed on the field. He’s held up as a model to others of what that success can look like.

    • Trevor

Thanks for doing this again this week! You do an awesome recap. Better than any of the news sites actually. Greatly appreciated.

Hearing Pete include Fluker with a group of Beast Mode, Kam and Earl with regards to bringing a toughness to the team makes me believe he is a guy the Hawks will definitely look to extend before end of season if he’d an stay healthy and I hope they do.

The interior of the Hawks OL has been a dream matchup for every team in the league the last 3 years. But with Britt, Sweezy and Fluker in the middle it is quickly becoming a nightmare and a group no one wants to face.

      • Sea Mode

My pleasure. Whenever I have time to listen to it at my computer, I can just as easily take notes in real time. Helps to get over the mid-week hump.

BTW, I wanted to mention it a couple threads back when you were praising V12 for talking up Chris Carson pre-draft, but props to you for banging the table all off-season for the Seahawks to sign Fluker!

      • DC

“Hearing Pete include Fluker with a group of Beast Mode, Kam and Earl…”

No kidding. That’s no joke to be included with 3 legendary Hawks. Stay healthy big boi!

    • Volume12

Hell yeah! These recaps/presser notes are my jam.

  11. millhouse-serbia

I still have hope that we could trade ET before trade deadline and get something for him. Maybe we can change our 3rd round for Chiefs 2nd round pick?

    • Rob Staton

Why would any team do that? They’d be paying for the right to franchise him, which the Seahawks aren’t going to do and would to likely more trouble in terms of holdouts and bad bargaining. Might as well wait until the open market begins.

      • millhouse-serbia

To avoid race with other teams. To have more time for contract negotiation. And at this moment, if they show him how bad they want him, maybe they can get him for lower price.

        • Rob Staton

It seems very unlikely to me. Especially because teams have no means of knowing how he’ll recover from the latest broken leg. Much better to wait until March and test it + talk contract having allowed his market to be set.

It’s also worth noting — nobody wanted to trade for him when he was healthy. There was seemingly tentative interest. Seattle never got a great offer. So now he’s hurt and unavailable, I can’t fathom any team making a move.

          • FresnoHawk

Seahawks did the right thing by trying to get more. It didn’t hurt them much for trying they end up with a lower draft pick a year later that can be used as pick equity in 2019. After all everyone complains the Hawks give away talent so at least we know that is not the case, the truth is they “grind out” these deals.

          • BobbyK

Don’t forget ET is one of the highest paid safeties. Any other team would still be on the hook for over $4 million in game checks THIS year. Not sure how that’s a wise investment by anyone.

  12. millhouse-serbia

There is debate on twiter right now. @hawkbloghwr ask this:

Let’s try this another way where folks hopefully don’t get as defensive.

What draft comp would you need to trade:
    1. Chris Carson
    2. Mike Davis
    3. Rashaad Penny

    • Rob Staton

I would urge people not to get involved

      • Aaron

        +12

Both Carson and Davis haven’t shown they can be a bell cow for 16 games. We need both of them. We literally just got Penny…you can’t be serious, right?

    • Darnell

Working with the assumption that the other two stay healthy:

Carson – I couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger for less than a late 1st
      Davis – 4th
Penny – 3rd, I think I would say no to a 4th. I think he got too heavy, and will be an exciting weapon either this winter or in 2019.

    • Kenny Sloth

Hard to see any of them netting more than a fourth

    • Kenny Sloth

Who cares how other fans value them

    • Trevor

I for one am glad we finally have a solid RB group and hope they leave it untouched. Carson and Davis have looked great but neither has had a full NFL season yet even. I would want to see at least a full year of production before even considering a trade.

All it takes is an injury to Carson or Davis and then all of a sudden things don’t look quite as deep. If this team wants to be a power run focussed team they need depth at RB and now it seems they finally have that. I hope they keep all 3 young studs and let them battle it out for carries.

    • FresnoHawk

After years of development, trading multiple years of draft picks, hiring new coaches, and spending 10’s of millions of $$ to develop a running offense after 3 successful games folks want to trade away the players?

      • Sea Mode

        +1

        My thoughts exactly.

    • AlaskaHawk

The original comparison was a running back versus a field goal kicker. I think that is an interesting question from the perspective of which is more valuable. In Seahawks case, they need a good field goal kicker. They have already lost a game or two due to missed field goals.

Speaking of missing field goals and punting, why do these guys look so good in preseason, and then shank the ball in regular season?? It’s annoying when a punter shanks the ball.

      • Elmer

Here is an off the wall question.

Suppose hypothetically that Dickson drop-kicks field goals. In that instance you would not need a holder.

What do the rules say about who the 11th person can be if it isn’t a holder. Could it be an extra blocker?

      • RealRhino2

These field player vs. kicker questions make no sense to me. I just don’t think people think this through. It is EASY to get a league-average kicker. There are guys on the street right now who should turn in performances that are fine. Justin Tucker was the example, right? Last year he hit 92% of his FGA. Kai Forbath is on the street; he made 84%. For the ENTIRE YEAR, Tucker had two more makes in essentially the same number of attempts. TWO. Now, you’d have the spread that out and see how likely it is that those two makes occur in situations that win or lose a game. Not often, I’d bet.

For example, in Tucker’s 2017 season, they had just three games finish within a FG. They lost all three. Which means you paid that extra money for no added value, essentially. A good, even great kicker is just not all that much better than an average kicker, and their chances of having a real impact are just extremely limited. It’s like having a GREAT pinch-hitter in baseball. Now shorten the baseball season to 16 games. How many times is just the right situation going to come up where that guy makes a difference? A good RB’s impact can affect every game.

    • Ashish

Seriously!! we had couple of good games and willing to trade your RB(s)? It’s long season, in football injuries are given having dept is must.
Penny is a great pick, imagine person you choose Carson in 7th Round and he is doing great how about the guy selected in first round. Just give some time.

      • AlaskaHawk

I agree with you Ashish. Having three good running backs is a problem that all teams would like to have. It wouldn’t bother me at all if they saved Penny until one of the other two got hurt or just stopped performing as well. Fresh legs at the end of the season could make a lot of difference. At this point there is no reason to use Penny before the break. And maybe no reason to use Penny until the playoffs 🙂

  13. AlaskaHawk

In our perennial discussion of cap space and players, I thought I would take a look at Seahawks players that will be free agents in 2019. There are about 30 players that will be free agents. That number surprised me, I can see why the General Manager is busy.

I expect the Seahawks to resign at least 10 of the free agents. Some of them will be getting significant bumps in pay. For instance on the offensive line there is Fluker, Sweezy, Fant, and Hunt. FLuker/Sweezy are getting about 1.5 Million/year each and Fant/Hunt about 500K. I would expect whoever is chosen as the starter will eventually end up in the 6-8 million range, which is comparable to Britt at center. The other two may get a bump up into the 2 million range.

There are lots of other players that will probably get raises. Clark is way undervalued. Perhaps Coleman though he is making 3 million now. Jefferson is up for resigning. Moore is looking more and more like a second or third receiver.

Anyway I found it interesting and thought I would share.

    • Trevor

That is a ton of free agents. It seems like JS wants as little as possible on the books as they head into 2020 collective bargaining and likely lockout. I think they will be really selective about who sign to a long term deal.

For me Clark, Fluker, Coleman, Sweezy, Jefferson and Fant are guys they should definitely try to lock up.

      • Volume12

Clark, Fluker, Mike Davis, and Coleman should be the priorities as re-signs.

        • Trevor

Forgot about Davis and agree completely.

          • Volume12

Glad your man Fluker has panned out to put it mildly. As Sea Mode said, you were hanging the drum for him this off-season.

      • Sea Mode

I think I could do without Jefferson unless they feel he’s about to turn a corner in his development in a big way. He was already an older rookie coming out anyway, though I do know some players blossom late.

    • AlaskaHawk

If this current crop of receivers play well then Seahawks would probably favor continuity and sign Moore and Reynolds for at least 2 million per year. It has been hard to maintain a passing game with Baldwin’s health issues. I like Lockett a lot- but realistically any of those guys could go down with an injury. They need to keep the productive ones.

I’m deeply disappointed in Marshall (reference my bitch about preseason performance vs regular season above). I thought he would be a prime jump ball red zone threat. I still have hopes = but ….. he has to catch a higher percentage of passes.

      • McZ

I’m all for dropping Brown and Marshall. They are both distractions and keep guys off the field, that are desperate to play a down. I think, they really should give Reynolds and Scott a shot. They could learn a lot from a game like in London.

    • RealRhino2

Serious question? If we have about 30 impending free agents, that means 30 guys playing on the last year of their deals, right? Just like the other 200+ impending free agents throughout the league are playing on the last year of their deals? Not to open an old wound, but how is it that anybody would say Earl was being “done dirty” by the Hawks when they didn’t extend him and let him play out the last year of his deal? Because he’s played well in the past? Haven’t all of these guys played well for somebody in the past? I mean, that’s how they got deals in the first place. Why is for those hundreds of guys it’s okay for the team to wait and see how they perform, while for Earl it’s “Oooh, they’re kicking him to the curb! They doing him dirty!”

      • smitty1547

100% agree with you Rhino, I always hear the injury is why early wanted long term commitment, but rarely hear that’s also why the Seahawks didn’t want to give it to him. Seems they were right, just wish they would have traded him and gotten something.

  14. sdcoug

Sure wish the Cardinals weren’t our divisional rivals and that we had some extra draft capital laying around, cause Deone Bucannon would look awfully good as a Hawk

    • Rob Staton

If there’s a deal to do, I’d prefer Reddick. There’s your quick EDGE.

      • Trevor

I can’t believe that Reddick is even on the market. He seemed scheme diverse coming out of college. Would love to see them some how pick him up to add speed to the front 7.

      • Sea Mode

Maybe send Jaron Brown back and a 2020 R5?

I like Brown and he’s on a reasonable deal, but the more snaps and practice reps David Moore can get, the better IMO.

That said, I don’t know what the Cardinals need right now or if they would even want another WR. Send them QJeff and a late round 2020 pick…?

        • Rob Staton

I’d see if they’d do Pocic for Reddick.

          • millhouse-serbia

            Why Pocic? Why not Britt?

You think that they wouldn’t take Britt or?

            • Rob Staton

Britt is a proven starter. Pocic is on the bench.

          • Sea Mode

            I’m down!

          • FresnoHawk

If we trade Pocic we have to add an Multi position playing OL in the draft are you willing to do that for Reddick? No way would I give up a draft pick and a player for Reddick when Reddick hasn’t played much and was beaten out for his position. Player for player only!

            • Rob Staton

I didn’t say anything about a pick. Would I be tempted by a Pocic for Reddick swap? Yes. Because they have Hunt, Simmons and Fant as depth on the OL. And I’d be willing to trade some depth for a potential star speed rusher. I have no idea if that kind of deal would appeal to Arizona though. I suspect it wouldn’t.

              • 80SLargent

Since we’re rosterbating, how about Naz Jones for Reddick? I don’t know what’s going on with Jones, but it seems really weird that a guy who flashed like he did last season basically hasn’t seen the field this season. Both guys seem to have quickly fallen out of favor on their respective teams.
That said, I think there’s a near zero chance Arizona would trade Reddick inside the division unless they got something stupid good for him.

                • Rob Staton

Can’t see them dealing for Naz. I only touted Pocic because he was at least a R2. To be honest I doubt Arizona would bite on a Pocic swap.

                  • FresnoHawk

Isn’t Pocic on track & on time? Is there a consensus how good Pocic will be?

  15. Trevor

Rob I agree with one of the things you said about needing to add speed to the front 7. I think Green and Griffin were a start last year.

Now if they could only figure out how to get Devin White and Jachai Polite in Rd #1 they would be all set.

If a team came to the Hawks and offered a 1st round pick for Bobby Wagner would you take it if you were assured Devin White was still going to be on the draft board? Just a hypothetical because I think Devin White has the potential to be that good.

    • Rob Staton

No, I want Bobby in Seattle for life.

      • Trevor

Hard to argue with that and I agree. Incredible player and the type of attitude you wish every player had.

I kind of feel the same way about KJ. I hope he comes back healthy and they can find a way to keep him both would be a great veteran presence on a young D.

I would love to see White in a Hawks uni though as I think he will be a star. We need pass rush help a lot more however and I think Polite and Burns would be #1 and 2 on my wish list right now assuming Ferrell and Bosa are off the board.

      • DC

Bobby is currently the only remaining starter from the championship defense with KJ hurt. RW, Baldwin & Sweezy on offense. Time flies…

  16. Trevor

Water under the bridge but still wish the Hawks had taken a flier on Josh Sweat. He seemed to fit the profile Pete wants in a Edge rusher perfectly. Will be interested to see how he does when he gets some playing time in Philly.

  17. Hawk Eye

the Hawks have $44.8 million in cap hits this year for
    dead money
    IR
    NFI
    PUP

from cap total of $172 million

Rams have about $28.3M out of cap total of 177 M

about an extra 10% of cap they have available

let’s hope next year they are low on dead money and IR
hard to compete when 25% of your cap is not playing

I love the way US Soccer teams have like… 24 year old rookies.

Such a stupid lack of development

    Rob, London question.

Shad Khan appears to be angling for the Jags to have more than the one London game at Wembley in the future. There’s talk of splitting the 8 home games between Jacksonville and London.

Has the Jags’ annual visit built up a decent fan base in London? Or at least more than the standard NFL teams abroad would have?

    • Rob Staton

There aren’t many. Success is needed for that to happen. And for the most part Jacksonville has been terrible during the Wembley period. But if they continue to win things will change. I’ve noticed there are a lot more Hawks fans in the UK, mainly because of the wins.

      • Kenny Sloth

In addition to wins, perhaps, the culture of the team is quite attractive to new fans of the sport and there’s something brewing there in that regard of which I’m quite jealous.

If yall need some sport watchin and dont hate futbol give the usa v colombia game a watch. Both should fielding decent teams. Starts at 430 tonight.

Tomorrow should be a heated clash between Croatia and England in a rematch of the semifinal in which Croatia elininated England from the world cup this summer. New tournament called UEFA Nations League, this match will be played behind closed doors I think because of something shady Croatia did(?). That one is on at 11:30 am PST tomorrow

      Is Pulisic playing?

      • Kenny Sloth

He is Not. Him and our two other best youngsters are out with light injuries.

Honestly we still have an interim head coach so there ain’t much for them to gain from being in these camps anyway
