Really good listen! As someone who will be at the Cleveland game this weekend, I both love and hate the positivity regarding this one. I was at the Steelers game and your measured approach tempered my expectations which made the result all the more fun. Now I’m going in confident which could be a recipe for disaster!! Thanks again for the great content. I’d really love to see another big INT from Thompson and this feels like a great opportunity for him. He has dealt with a lot of negativity from the fan base, and from my perspective has handled it with class. Mayfield will take some unwarranted risks downfield and I hope he capitalizes. Go Hawks!!

      Thanks for listening!

Gardner Minshew is who the Browns thought they were getting in Baker Mayfield.

    • Volume12

TBF though, that is one of the worst O-lines in the league. Hands down.

Looking at your top 50 list. Curious about a couple things.

Was Oklahoma C Creed Humphrey not on there due to him being a R-SO? Not a fan? Or just haven’t got to see much of him yet?

The ‘Bama OT’s. Leatherwood and Willis. Outside your top 50 in that next tier? Need to see more?

    • Kenny Sloth

Bama RT is a dude not sure he’s a top 50 guy tho

    • Eli

Was sad to see A.J. Epenesa not on the list.

      • Rob Staton

        Very overrated

        • Eli

          How so?

          • Rob Staton

Don’t get what the fuss is at all. Last year he was spelled a ton and his performance was so hit and miss. For long stretches you barely notice he’s there. No idea why or when he became this consensus high pick.

This year was meant to be his time to shine. He only has two sacks and two TFL’s in five games.

            • Eli

Watching his tape he’s consistently double-teamed or chip blocked, and run plays rarely ever go to his side of the line. The chance to rack up counting stats haven’t been as available this season since teams are going out of their way to gameplan him out.

That being said, he’s among the leaders in overall pressure, and in the games I’ve watched there’s quite a few times he’s a half-step away from a sack versus a QB hit. I would recommend his tape against Rutgers and Iowa St. as good examples of just how much disruption he can cause. He’s not a gaudy speed rusher but he is a technically sound power rusher who impacts the game in more ways than one.

Hope you come around. He might not be a Top 5 worthy player, that is very true, but I struggle to agree he deserves to be outside the Top 50. I think he ends up pretty similar to someone like Justin Smith or Cam Jordan.

              • Rob Staton

I didn’t study Justin Smith coming into the league but I did study Cam Jordan. In my final mock draft I had him down as the #3 overall pick — that’s how much I rated Jordan. Clearly that was a rubbish projection because he lasted into the 20’s but the assessment of his talent was fair. I have to say — I don’t see Cam Jordan in AJ Epenesa.

I think unfortunately you’ve just nailed part of the problem. The lack of great physical skills. It’s fine to be a technician. But Zach Allen wasn’t a great athlete this year. He lasted until round three — pick #65. That’s despite being an absolute game-wrecker at times for Boston College during the 2018 season. Epenesa isn’t having that impact and never really has. To me there’s just a distinct lack of anything to get excited about. I liked Allen more than I like Epenesa. And for me — that middle-round range is where I see Epenesa currently.

                • Eli

Fair enough, sounds like a case of floor vs. ceiling. Testing will be important no doubt – I don’t think he’s gonna have a great 40-time but I think he’s gonna end up surprising a lot of people with the rest of his athletic profile.

    • Rob Staton

Not full studied Leatherwood but he hasn’t stood out watching Alabama. Not studied Humphrey much either.

    #22 in DVOA defense.

Pete can you please move on from this awful full time 4-3 base experiment?

    • Sea Mode

      4-1

      • UKAlex6674

Well put Sea Mode. I think people tend to look at the stats rather than anything else.

The D got burned a lot against the Rams, but made the plays when it had to do so.

The most important number in football sits under the ‘W’.

        GO HAWKS!

      • Brazilian Hawk

In spite of our defensive performance let’s get real here.

We could easily be 1-4 if Russell Wilson weren’t in god mode playing like the best QB in the NFL (or if we didn’t face three of the worst NFL teams this season).

I think we can all agree we’re far away from the golden standard defensively.

        • Rob Staton

The defense is a mile off what it needs to be. There’s still room to grow. Hopefully they will. But it’s ranked about #22 per DVOA and that feels about right. Bottom third.

        • Sea Mode

Let’s get Reed back and get the rest of our pass rush up to speed and on the same page. I’ll give it to the halfway point of the season. Then we will know what our defense is really made of. Hopefully turnover numbers increase with more errant passes being forced by pressure.

          • Logan Lynch

To add to this, the DBs have to start just making plays when they get the chance. Aside from T2’s awesome INT, they arguably could’ve and should’ve had 4 or 5. McDougald should’ve had 2 including a pick 6…by the way, he doesn’t look the greatest this season imo. Taylor had 2 chances at picks. Griffin had 1. If they come down with a few of those, it has the chance to drastically change the outlook from that game. They’ll need to start making those plays to help this team reach their goals.

  7. D-OZ

Experiment,I think is the wrong analogy… The only time it has worked for the Hawks is when Green, Nash and Bryant were up front. With a great group of linebackers and Safety’s. And I am not talking about Bosworth either!!! GO HAWKS!

  8. millhouse-serbia

We have toughest schedule till the end of the season by the opponent DVOA ratings.

    • Rob Staton

One of the reasons I’ve been trying to dilute some of the ‘12-4’ talk.

    • mishima

      Errors in round/pick.

      • Comfect

I don’t think those are errors; I think the point is that we’d feel better about the drafts if the players we got from them had been acquired in that order with those picks rather than what happened.

        • Rob Staton

          Exactly — and it’s a great image.

Yes you want your high picks to come off. But we shouldn’t judge a GM and staff simply by high picks. It’s about a cumulative class. And the Seahawks have continued to add excellent players even if some of their more recent top picks haven’t ended up being stars.

Rob: Just wondering. Looking back. Do you think the Hawks made a mistake letting Justin Coleman go.

    • Rob Staton

Well, they didn’t let him go. He was paid a fantastic contract.

I can totally understand why they chose not to match that contract. Hindsight is a great thing. It’d be nice if he was still in Seattle. But I get why he isn’t.

  13. millhouse-serbia

Blair is stricly FS right now, by PC.

Rob, from this distance, would you change your pre draft opinion that PC and JS are looking for big nickel amd not safety?

    • Rob Staton

I’ve thought that if they were going to add someone in the off-season it would be a playmaking safety. Not said anything about a big nickel recently.

      • millhouse-serbia

Yes, I know that. I thought on your pre 2019 draft opinion. Never mind. If PC thinks Blair is future FS, than question mark is does hi think Lano is SS of the future, or they will be looking for SS at 2020 draft.

And if they are willing to play a lot with 3 LB as we can see this year, maybe someone like Isaiah Simmons who is LB/S could be perfect player for that starting role.

        • Rob Staton

Blair could always be used as a SS in the future, even if Carroll has said today he’s a FS (I haven’t heard the press conference so not sure what he said).
