NEW: Radio appearance on 710 Seattle Sports

Earlier today I was invited onto the Jake & Stacy show (Curtis Rogers was filling in for Stacy). We talked about Jimmy Garoppolo, Baker Mayfield, D.K. Metcalf and more.

New DB coach/defensive pass-game coordinator Karl Scott talked about one way Seattle’s defense will be visibly different this year: players like Jamal Adams moving around more pre-snap in order to disguise looks and keep QBs guessing. “It’s kind of like organized chaos,” he said.

The feeling in the organization is that some of Seattle’s defensive issues in recent years were the result of it becoming too easy for good QBs to decipher, and that more pre-snap movement with an eye toward disguising looks — a hallmark of Vic Fangio’s system — will help.

      • Ashish

Will interesting to see how much difference we see during per-season games. Given they will not like to reveal much before the season.

      • TomLPDX

I’m really looking forward to what our D will look like this year. We made some really good hires and this guys want to be innovative. I think it is going to be a fun year for the Hawks. Might not show it in the W-L column but I think it will be really exciting for the players especially.

Today’s press conferences introduced us to a lot of new people. Like them all! Scott’s interview was really good.

      • Old but Slow

There is reason to hope that they will apply the same thinking to the offense. No more having the opposing defenses calling out our plays before the snap.

    • Malc from PO

I hope we can pull this off. Last couple of years at some points it seemed that our defense was too complex for the players to understand what they were doing (Tre Flowers’s comments, for example) while simultaneously being too easy for the opposition to read. That’s a rough combination.

      • cha

        Great observation

    • 10to80

It’s greatest benefit will be the first four weeks or so that teams don’t have tape on it. The fun one being game 1 where Seattle’s defense isn’t known, and Russ and Hackett are.

    • TomLPDX

Whatever…he ain’t our problem any more. Thank God!

      • king.

Russ was a problem (meaning net negative)? Russ was so much of a problem that we are thanking our maker that he is gone?

Russ ingratiating himself with his new team and fanbase by paying tribute to their history is anything other than a good move?

        • TomLPDX

          Yes.

          • king.

            Care to elaborate?

I get that some people think Russ became a problem over the last couple of years, but I specifically don’t get how embracing his new team is bad.

            • TomLPDX

Sure. First off, I love Russ. But I grew tired of his shtick, if you know what I mean. He will continue to be Russ and always will be. More power to him. But he gets tiresome, at least to me. My older brother is a HUGE Broncos fan, had season tickets for years and I was a fan of the Broncos from the beginning because of that even though we were in the same division, except when they played us. And it didn’t hurt that Gary Kubiak, my college QB when I was in school at TAMU, was on there team in multiple capacities.

I told my brother when the trade happened to get ready for Russ. You’ll love him but you’ll also get tired of his stuff. It’s nonstop.

I’m glad we moved on. There was a definitely disconnect between Pete and Russ and this needed to happen.

Agree or disagree, doesn’t really matter to me. I’m just glad the drama has moved on to another team.

              • Old but Slow

Too bad they didn’t give him #7.

                • Big Mike

                  I wouldn’t horsefaces’s number if they paid m3.

            • Denver Hawker

Local fans here already starting to turn on him. Not a majority or even close, but growing concern among Denver fans about how his lifestyle/personality fit with the team. Denver is much more blue collar fanbase and don’t care for all the positivity- want results. Had quite a few batted balls at camp and some jumped on that as reason for concern. This fan base will be far less tolerant than Seattle ever was. Wish him the best of course.

              • Roy Batty

Denver sports media won’t have to do much to surpass the Seattle media.

Nothing but softballs and walking on eggshells around here.

                It became a running joke.

              • Comfect

                That’s a very fast turnaround! He hasn’t played a down yet…

Note: I’m not saying you’re wrong, at all. It’s just funny how fast the media cycle turns, given that they literally haven’t seen the Broncos play with him yet.

              • 10to80

Interesting comments. Russ will not get a free pass on Denver because of all they gave up. And I don’t believe Lock will ever be held accountable I’d he’s not good in Seattle ( that’ll fall on Pete and John S).

It’s a high risk trade. High reward? Sure, IF they win the SB. If they don’t, or worse, say Russ got hurt (something no one can control), it’ll be a bust trade when Russ asks for top teir QB money he earned from Seattle– not Denver. Then the fan base will really turn.

Seattle can have a losing season, and they’ll be able to point you 4 high draft picks and 3 good players inn return for the rebuild did they DON’T have to pay for Wilson’s 50 million.

So, Denver, Russ, SB or busy

  2. Chase

Rob and/or others, do you think it’s likely they want to see how the QB situation shakes out with baker or Jimmy g before they extend DK? They could use the cap saved from not signing either to load into the first year of DKs cap hit if neither are signed? I’m not claiming to know anything about cap hits and contract structures, just clarification of a possibility.

    • cha

      That’s a great question.

I don’t think that is the case. My gut says they wouldn’t want to pay very much for either Baker or Jimmy, and so a negotiation with DK shouldn’t be slowed by them. PC’s comments did express some “hey this is on DK not on us” impatience.

In that piece I wrote up, I had the Seahawks taking $3m extra cap in 2022 on the extension, and having it hit hard early and be much flexible later. That’s their standard MO. But they did the exact opposite of that on the Adams contract. The saved cap money in 2020 by trading for him and then reduced his cap hit in 2021 when they signed him to his big deal.

So long story short, we can’t say with 100% certainty.

    • D

I think they’re waiting to see how dk recovers from his surgery before green lighting his extension. Pete mentioned in his pc the other day that they had an assessment due in two weeks on his progress so I guess thats the date to watch. I don’t think it’s anything to do with cap space this year

      • Rob Staton

        I doubt that

Especially given who they’ve paid recently

      • cha

I highly doubt that. He played on it nearly the entire season last year. It’s not like it is career-altering.

        • D

I’m just basing it on what Pete said at the pc! Could very well be bs and a diversion but he deliberately mentioned the assessment in two weeks. If I was about to invest north of 100 mil in a player I’d want to be sure he was healthy.

          • Rob Staton

I think you’re reading too much into it

          • cha

He was talking about Chris Carson, not Metcalf.

  3. Forlorn Fandom

I wouldn’t intentionally choose to lose, but really like the play of taking a high upside boom or bust if the price is right like Lock. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Waldron can harness a better Lock than the league has seen, but what happens if he plays pretty well but not elite? There hasn’t been a QB mentioned, not already on the roster that’s best case scenario would keep me out of the QB draft next year.
In a crazy alternative universe that Lock or Geno run a decent offense and wildly out perform the expectations, is there a point you’d choose to skip QB next year and truly make a team centered around defense and running the ball?

  4. Jed Simon

Wow, Rob. Absolutely breathing fire today. Brilliantly done. Jake clearly got a kick out of it.

Question: Given the extreme number of injuries that have frustrated promising young core Seahawks over the past few seasons, how is one to make declarative judgments about Seattle’s 2022 roster quality with any level of confidence?

If only half of these injury-plagued players should make it back to the field and go on to perform at levels commensurate with draft position, trade compensation, or salary cost, then wouldn’t this roster currently be poised to receive a major shot in the arm this season?

. . .And that’s before factoring in whatever contributions the rookie class might make, what kind of productive onfield chemistry the team might form over the course of the season, the influence of the new coaches and schemes, etc.

Those who matter-of-factly declare this roster to be among the league’s worst (a sentiment near-universal across sports media) rarely account for the potential impact of prior draftees finally returning to action and finding ways to contribute. They won’t all make their comebacks, but some surely will, and some might really benefit from the various schematic tweaks. And in the strange case of L.J. Albatross: If he should go on to have a productive year on the inside, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised.

    • Rob Staton

I think that’s what it is. This is a team with some young players with potential but they need more to be a contender and there remains a lot of unknowns. The basis of 2022 should be trying to find players who we can view as plus starters for the road ahead.

  5. UkAlex6674

Re LJ – agreed, its a fresh start for everyone but he is really going to have to show something special.

Bo Melton, fellow rookie draft pick and WR Dareke Young almost HAD to be on Seahawks’ OTA practice field this week.

Pete Carroll, his assistants were not happy those 2 missed minicamp last week with soreness the coaches felt they should have gotten in good enough shape to avoid

    • Hawkdawg

He actually also implied the same thing about Walker III, who also had to lay off because of hamstring soreness and who is considerably higher up the chart in terms of team expectations….

    9) Seattle Seahawks: Will Anderson Jr., EDGE, Alabama
I know what you’re thinking. I’m thinking it too. Will Anderson Jr. should not have fallen this far. But if the draft order plays out as the current odds project, many teams picking early might not need an edge rusher or may give the QB position greater precedence. Detroit picked Aidan Hutchinson. The Giants picked Kayvon Thibodeaux. The Jets picked Jermaine Johnson II. Jacksonville picked Travon Walker. Even the Falcons got Arnold Ebiketie in Round 2.

EDGE isn’t a top need for many teams picking early on. But the Seahawks do have room to add to their rotation. And at this point, the value with Anderson is too good to pass up. Anderson gives the Seahawks a potentially dominant edge defender with high-end explosiveness, lateral agility, power capacity, and a plasma-hot motor in pursuit. Anderson is arguably the top prospect in the 2023 NFL Draft. This is as far as he feasibly falls.

    26) Seattle Seahawks: Cameron Ward, QB, Washington State
The Seahawks passed on a QB earlier. But now, at the back end of Round 1, the value is much better. It’s tough to tell who will work their way into the late-Round 1 range. There are a few candidates, among them Spencer Rattler and Tyler Van Dyke. But another notable name in the mix is Cameron Ward, who transferred to Washington State from Incarnate Word. Ward has an incredible arm with high-end velocity and elasticity. And a year at the Power Five level could provide him with the stage he needs to ascend.

    • Rob Staton

There’s more chance of me winning ‘rear of the year’ than Will Anderson falling to #9 overall

      • Ukhawk

You’d have my vote if it would make it happen – sweetcheeks!

      • Big Mike

Your wife called and said you’ve got her vote.

        Seriously, Anderson #9, ZERO chance.

      • TJ

I find Spencer Rattler’s name being mentioned in the first round to be equally hard to believe. Yet another reason why I think most mock drafts (not including the ones on this site) are a total waste of time.

        • Rob Staton

Rattler has no business being discussed as such

He’s fighting to save his career this year. Needs to win and keep a job, let alone build towards R1

    • Jordan

With 4 picks in the top 60, I think the targets need to be: QB, disruptive front 4 defensive player, interior oline, off ball lber.

I think if they stick to the same approach in the 2023 draft that they had in 2022 they should be able to have a very productive draft.

If QB doesn’t fall right then there is also some really good players at WR and CB too.

In locking up their star, the Steelers also created $2,487,675 in cap space.

Breer says Browns willing to eat half of Mayfield’s salary in trade. Carolina waffling.

    https://youtu.be/Z-wBQwUP4o0

Thinks teams like Carolina and Seattle are assessing their programs after OTA’s, says that Lock not being ahead of Geno Smith at this point is ‘not great news.’

As an aside it appears the consensus including Rob was correct on Matt Corrall. The Panthers drafted him and have a perfectly good placeholder in Darnold and STILL are the top suitor to land Mayfield.

    • AlaskaHawk
