Report: Jadeveon Clowney playing a waiting game?

Despite a fair bit of doom-mongering on twitter, the tweet above is probably good news for the Seahawks.

It’s been a relatively quiet first day of the legal tampering period for Seattle. With other blockbuster deals happening within the NFC West (DeForest Buckner leaving the Niners, DeAndre Hopkins joining the Cards) — the Seahawks are yet to make a move.

Importantly, none of their likely D-line targets are off the market apart from Arik Armstead.

A lot of people have been pointing to Buckner’s new $21m-a-year deal in Indianapolis as a bad sign for Seattle and their pursuit of Clowney. Why though?

If he was going to agree terms on a fat contract that was too rich for the Seahawks, he likely wouldn’t be taking his time to consider his next move. He’d just be signing on the dotted line. If there are things to consider and a process to play out, that likely means he hasn’t been immediately blown away by the offers on the table.

Furthermore — the Colts made a bold trade to acquire Buckner. The minute you chuck the #13 overall pick to San Francisco, you immediately hand the player a heap of leverage. You don’t trade away top-15 picks for non-elite players. You also don’t trade away top-15 picks on rentals. The Colts had to sign him and pay him.

Clowney is in a very different boat as a free agent.

There may come a time when desperate teams throw money at him to make a splash. That could still take him to another club. Many big name free agents, including Tom Brady, are yet to make a call.

Yet it’s also possible teams simply aren’t willing to pay him at an elite rate.

The Seahawks have clearly made retaining Clowney a priority. A bit of patience might land him at the price their most comfortable paying. We’ll see.

As for Seattle’s quiet start overall — it’s been fairly quiet for most teams with a few big headline moves. The players they need are still out there. The time to judge will be when the signings are made, not now.

Meanwhile they have given Jacob Hollister a high tender:

This would suggest they’re less likely to draft someone like Hunter Bryant.

And George Fant is moving on to the Jets after signing for $10m per year:

Increasingly it was trending towards Fant getting the starting opportunity he was looking for. There’s no news yet on Germain Ifedi. The Seahawks were never going to be shopping in the high-end market at tackle with such a major need on the D-line. Expect some kind of veteran hedge if Ifedi also departs, followed by some draft competition.

With the Dolphins making moves like this I wouldn’t be surprised if they jump to #3 to get Tua.

      • lil’stink

That would be a horrible idea, which is why they would probably do it.

  2. cha

I find it interesting that I haven’t seen anything about Dante Fowler. Nothing.

I’m choosing to believe that is good for Seattle as well, if they are interested in him.

    • Sea Mode

I saw something yesterday, but it was just a generic, “the Rams are working on new deals for him along with 3 other players” type empty report.

      Other than that, yeah, nothing.

    • Eburgz

Haven’t heard much on Fowler, Quinn, Griffen, Clowney, Reed . Not time to panic yet

  3. Rob4q

Interesting about Hollister – shows they really value him and what he brought to the offense to tender him at a 2nd round. Olsen, Dissly and Hollister will make up a nice TE group!

    • TomLPDX

They obviously value him as a player more than we do as fans. I thought this was significant. If you think about it, without Hollister last year, our TE goose would have been cooked. Willson was out injured a majority of the time and all we had was Jacob. The rest of our TEs were non-existant.

      • Kingdome1976

I as a fan valued him more highly than most. It seemed weird to me that he kind of got tossed to the side.

        • TomLPDX

I know, I never got that. I saw Jacob for what he is and he came through. Is he the best? No. Can he make plays? Yes.

I’ve been an NFL fan since before the Seahawks even existed and always appreciated individual effort by players. Jacob put forth the effort. Glad to see the Seahawks recognize this.

Ravens are giving former Rams’ DL Michael Brockers a 3-year, $30 million deal that includes $21m guaranteed, per source.

    • Simo

Ravens definitely being very aggressive during their SB window, beefing up their defensive line.

      • Greg Haugsven

Ravens attacking things. You have to think they are a SB front runner.

      • lil’stink

Everything is easier when you have a quality QB on a rookie contract.

  5. Von

Stephan Weatherly tothe Panthers. 2 years, $12.5. He was a guy I was hoping we could sign.

  6. Justaguy

I just don’t see how the DL moves forward next year without Clowney. Seems like the longer the wait the higher the price because the contingency plans will dissolve. Feels more like Clowney has most of the leverage in this situation and every day that passes he gains more leverage. Hope that I am wrong and Rob is right.

    • Rob Staton

That isn’t how it works though. The price doesn’t go up in FA the longer you’re on the market. Essentially teams are willing to pay what they’re willing to pay. If someone comes forward in the next 48 hours with a massive contract then c’est la vie. But if other players sign, his price will not rise because he remains unsigned. He knows his market by now.

  7. Al U

I would have considered the Colts and Ravens to be 2 of the more likely teams to pursue Clowney. The deals they’ve been doing on their D lines today must make that less likely now, no?

    • Von

I agree about those 2 teams. Buffalo could get into the mix.

      • Michael P Matherne

Is anyone buying the Bills as a legit Superbowl contender? Even if the Patriots finally relinquish their stranglehold on the division, I can’t imagine Josh Allen even holding the Lombardi trophy

        • Brian

Nobody expected Tannehill to lead a team to a championship game. Josh Allen finding success would seem as probable.

  8. Submanjoe

I think the moves today bode well for keeping Clowney. Cross colts off list perhaps. Titans suddenly have spent a lot on two of their own. Baltimore got Campbell, think they’d be out. And the lack of signings on pretty much all the “high price” pass rushers might mean the market isn’t as willing to over pay as much as in the past few years.

Interesting that all the Seahawks big free agents are still out there.

I’m glad they’re putting the 2nd round tender on Hollister, he plays hard. Good depth at TE now.

  9. Bob Parmenter

Rob, your observations on the Clowney situation are a pleasant dose of reality, as usual. It will be interesting to see if the rest of the league values him as much as he and his agent do, or do they fall closer in line with wat Seattle feels? If I had to bet this evening I’d say the team most likely to make him the best FA offer would be the Bills. We’ll see.

As for the Seahawks not being active this first day, they rarely are. For all that some fans believe they are cap “healthy” with plenty to spend, the reality is, in relative terms, they’re again in the middle of the pack. They will be able to make some deals, but they won’t be the headline buster type. Let’s hope they get quality fits for the team and scheme, they’ll need every bit of that. The NFC West gets tougher each year and their position in it could go either way with ease and a few game breaks for or against.

I know this blog focuses on draft picks, and mixes in the player acquisitions that complement, but to raise a familiar theme, I’m still concerned about the coaching under Pete. There have been a couple moves on the offensive side that look promising, but on defense little has changed. To borrow from “The Big Tuna”; “you are what your record shows you are” The in game scheme calls on defense have been suspect. The coaches we have, Norton in particular, may be fine during the week, but in live action they are wanting. As just one example, recall the K. Drake touchdown run in the second game against the Cardinals. The defense looked clueless about how to line up for the goal line stand. That happens way too often. Unfortunately that sort of thing can be enumerated very often throughout the year. Sadly not much appears to have been done to improve that. Norton has a career record as a lower third of the league DC, he is what his record shows. Hopefully we can get enough talent to at least remain respectable, though predictably suspect.

    • Kingdome1976

Norton is simply doing what Pete wants him to do. He isn’t a mastermind coming up with his own scheme. He is what Pete wants him to be, which in the end you have to blame Pete if you want to go there.

      • Uncle Bob

Pete is responsible because Norton is his hire, and Pete keeps him on as DC, and the overall scheme is Pete’s. All that is true. However, Norton is the one in Wagners helmet calling the plays as needed each snap, and the results are wanting. Same scheme with other DCs with more talent and the results were better. You can’t say Norton is irrelevant and blame the scheme. Pete should upgrade the coaching/alignment calls in game……………………….that’s my point.

  10. vanhawksfan

I can’t get over the depth that Baltimore is amassing right now before they’ve even added draft picks, which include an extra 2,3,4 for them this year. An mvp qb on a rookie contract is a unicorn that has never happened before in the salary cap era. Coupled with excellent management and coaching, they could win multiple Super Bowls in the next 5-10 years. Quite something.

    • Kingdome1976

I seriously doubt they win multiple Super Bowls. I like what they are doing but teams will look to destroy their newfound MVP in the next few years. Don’t be surprised if he gets a major injury for what they are putting him through.

      • ivotuk

He’s in the division with Cinci, the Browns, and Stealers. He, like Kapernick will get figured out, and like RG3, will get beat up. You know Pittsturd will take cheap shots.

        • vanhawksfan

I think that Jackson showed enough with his arm last year that he will likely morph his game along Russell Wilson lines. Harbaugh is a good coach who has shown that he can win with a statue or a speedball. I’m intrigued to see what kind of weapons they will add via the draft, such as Jonathan Taylor and one of the receivers. They don’t have a lot of needs. Anyways, back to the Seahawks, whom I’ve loved since the 70s. Just feeling a bit of envy for another well managed team.

  11. Darnell

I like that tender for Hollister. Having been to both Hawks and Huskies home games recently, Hollister moves around a football field noticeably more athletically than Hunter Bryant does; and that’s against NFL athletes in the case of Hollister. To be fair to Bryant though, he may not be far enough removed from injury to fairly judge.

If they go TE, I love what Thad Moss does as a blocker. Just an absolute badass.

    • Kingdome1976

Personally I think Trautman will end up being the stud TE of this class anyway. I’m not dismayed.

  12. Volume12

If Rivers signs with Indy and they have another strong draft like they have the past 2 years, that’ll be an interesting team.

    • Kingdome1976

I agree that Indy is THE team for Rivers to go to. Playoffs?…probably. SB run?…nope.

      • TomLPDX

Don’t underestimate any of these teams. Put Rivers in the right situation and he will kill you with a thousand paper cuts. That’s his game. If the OL can keep him clean long enough then he will gash you eventually.

        • DC

          Indy’s OL is Legit.

    • Eburgz

Frank Reich is up there with K. Shanahan as one of the best offensive coaches in the league. Always been impressed how Philip Rivers operates his offense as a true field general. A+ toughness too. I’d be interested to see how it works out.

  13. drewdawg11

Hollister is not a better receiving threat than Hunter. If you’re saying that you think he’s a more dynamic player on the field… I wholeheartedly disagree with you. I hope someone is silly enough to sign hollister and hand over a second rounder. It’s highly doubtful, but it would be great for the team. Jacob is a backup TE and he was thrust into a role for which he was never intended.

    • Kingdome1976

I think it was a good move. He works surprisingly well in our offense.

    • ivotuk

      doesn’t Hunter have injury concerns?

I LOVE Hollister, dude is a Warrior. He took some serious hits, and just got up and walked away. TOughness and Grit right there. Glad we tendered him at the 2nd round, but I hope we keep him.

    • Michael P Matherne

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the only cheaper option would have been to place an original round tender on him, and since he was undrafted that would just be the same as him becoming a free agent?

      • J

Wed still get right to match.

        • Mark Souza

Hollister is faster, quicker, and most of all, PROVEN. The Hawks know what he can do. Bryant is a college kid with potential who might be able to make it in the pros.

  14. Jordan E

With the Cardinals getting Deandre… 49ers in position now for a top WR in the draft. We really need to address this Dline in the next few days. Hopefully Clowney is the first of many moves to fix the Dline…

Rob what are your thoughts on Cameron Wake as a cheaper veteran option (maybe even just depth/rotation piece). He performed very well according to PFF. Been hearing rumors about Diggs. He’d be a exciting pick up but not sure how smart of a move that would be. I hope that Chris Jones contract goes south very quickly. Perhaps we could get him for a 1st and next year second.

    • Rob Staton

I’m not a big fan of cheap veteran options to be honest. I can go for Everson Griffen because he’s a BAMF and had a great 2019. But otherwise I want young prime players now. We need to get faster, quicker and more aggressive.

      • Zxvo3

Could they add Dante Fowler with Griffen? Would we have enough money if we resigned Clowney and gave Griffen a short term deal and Fowler a longer term deal?

  15. Rob Staton

A heads up guys that I’ll be heading to bed soon. If anything breaks while I’m sleeping I’ll write it up in the morning. Apologies for the delay in advance.

Dolphins signings keep happening. Van Noy for 12-13/year.

    • Volume12

Not a fan of the Flowers signing, Lawson is meh, but I like this one and the Byron Jones move.

  17. HawkfaninMT

    On Hollister:

I like it. He was productive and a strong in the offense. If someone signs him away, that second rounder would be in line with where we are projecting Hunter to go, so he is the draft hedge

    • Edgar

Hollister isn’t worth more than $800,000-1 mil. His small frame couldn’t fall forward into the endzone for the division against Clara, He had a couple bad drops late in the year. His first catch in the playoffs was fumbled but luckily not overturned. He is completely pedestrian.

  18. Paul Cook

Not surprised by the quick Hollister signing. I thought that would be an easier high priority for them, and never thought they were going to blow a lot of draft capital on the TE position, or make an overly big commitment on a FA or trade for one.

    • Rob Staton

Don’t pull a muscle on the back-patting, champ.

      • CaptainJack

  19. Michigan 12th

I have a feeling that our first pick in the draft will be a running back this year. I am certainly not saying that I want that, but just have a feeling.

    • Rob Staton

Well, they haven’t done anything in FA yet. So predictions or feelings like that are a bit premature.

      • Michigan 12th

I totally agree it is just a bad hunch I can’t shake. All I really know is that I have no influence or say over what they do or don’t do, and I trust them anyways. I do appreciate all the work you do fro us to entertain us through this slow time of year though. Thanks Rob.

    • Simo

I’m gonna go way out on a limb and predict their first pick will be a lineman!

  20. CaptainJack

Dolphins spending BIG on a bunch of good but not great players.

Who knows if it will work out.

  21. CaptainJack

I don’t mind bringing Hollister back.

But I also wouldn’t mind seeing less of him and More Olsen and (please lord) healthy Dissly

    • Greg Haugsven

Second round tender seemed rich but since he was undrafted I guess they felt they had no choice. Still only paying about $10 million for 3 tight ends.

  22. Sea Mode

The #Raiders are pushing to close out a deal with QB Marcus Mariota, sources tell me and @RapSheet. Mike Mayock’s No. 1-ranked QB in his @nflnetwork coverage leading up to the 2015 Draft could soon be on his roster.

    • mishima

Who is having a better day? Mitch Trubisky or Derek Carr?

  23. Greg Haugsven

All the good pass rushers are still available so we are good for now. Ngakoue trade, Clowney, Fowler, Griffen, Quinn.

  24. charlietheunicorn

The longer the Clowney thing drags out, the better it is for Seattle.

This means he has a slightly cooler market than anticipated.

  25. charlietheunicorn

    IMO

Cardinals have already won the FA period, with a trade/heist for a premium WR.

  26. GoldenTaterSalad

Sooo am I way out of the loop? Why wouldn’t we jump on Brockers at 10 APY if Jarran Reed wants 12+? I was under the impression that Brockers was probably a little better than Reed straight up.

    • Rob Staton

Well Reed hasn’t signed yet, so who knows what his market is.

      • GoldenTaterSalad

Sorry if you’ve already answered this, but what are your thoughts on the two? Is Reed a little better, a lot better, or equal to Brockers?

        • Rob Staton

I think Reed is better personally.

          • dj 1/2 way

And a better personality. A known fit in the locker room. And maybe pissed off for success.

    Fant to Jets

    • SteveLargent80

3/30 with 13.7 guaranteed. He got paid. League is desperate for O Lineman

      • Sea Mode

Good for him. From a 1-year college TE to a $10m/year NFL Tackle. Well done and good luck, George!

        • Lewis

Happy for him, but sorry to see him go.

    • Greg Haugsven

Odd that Fant would sign before Ifedi. The longer Ifedi stays out there the more chance he could come back. He will most likely do a three year deal as well. Im guessing Fant went back to the Hawks and said can you match and they said no. That Ricky Wagner deal is looking better by the moment.

      • dj 1/2 way

The NFL loves the projected unknown better than the known average. They are paying for the potential, and betting their jobs on it. A fair bet, I think, but not one the Seahawks make.

      • Lewis

Fant can play on the left side. He could be average and that desk will wind up a bargain.

    • Aaron

After his ACL tear in 2017 it’s good to see him get a shot at being a starting tackle in this league. Let’s just hope we don’t keep Ifedi…please please PLEASE!!!

      • Coleslaw

I actually want to keep Ifedi for under 10M. Draft a tackle still but more of a LT project in the 2nd or 3rd. Just beef up the spot and prepare for Duane Brown’s approaching retirement.

        • Greg Haugsven

If we could get Ifedi for $8 million I say yes. Anymore than that I just dont know. Im guessing he gets at least what Fant got though and probably more.

          • dcd2

Ifedi is going to have a hard time taking less than his backup just got. Might be the way this shakes out though. Bummer about Fant. I think we were all hoping to keep him.

  28. Rob Staton

Post updated with the Fant news.

Now off to bed… wonder what I’ll wake up to.

  29. pdway

Fant’s a good athlete – and a homegrown talent – a little bummed to see him leave. Esp from an area of need. Always hoped he’d be a starter for us – maybe even the LT someday.

    • Greg Haugsven

It does hurt, you just never know the life span on Brown. If you resign Fant he could have been your future LT as you mentioned.

  30. Greg Haugsven

Falcons cutting Trufant after cutting Freeman. Reports are they are after an edge rusher, possibly Fowler.

    • Von

I live in Atlanta. That’s been a rumor here for some time now. He’s a Florida kid, so he may favor being back in the South.

      • dj 1/2 way

It is like another planet, especially compared to California. The natives are the big difference. I love the South, but from a distance.

  31. BobbyK

My former student who works as a scout for the Cowboys – worked for the Jets the previous season and he and I had a personal conversation about Fant. He said how much he/they liked him (Fant). I am not surprised at all because I know/knew for a fact that an NFL scout (and the organization he worked for) really liked him. He/they also really liked Jacob Martin – after what Martin showed in training camp his rookie year (then the Texans did, too).

It’s funny how teams view players differently because I know the Jets liked Fant better than Ifedi, yet Ifedi started for the Seahawks at one of the tackle spots. Before we crack jokes about the Jets sucking (and they do suck), the Jets roster really isn’t much different than the Seahawks roster if the Seahawks didn’t have Russell Wilson. Russell simply masks a lot of deficiencies.

    • Tony

a top 5 qb tends to mask defenciacies in general. And all teams have flaws.

      • BobbyK

I never knew that. Thank you so much for your input.

    • Kingdome1976

There are many differences aside from Russ. From the top down.

      • BobbyK

Explain. I want an analysis on every position and every group and how a clown like Sam Darnold would produce more wins than Russell Wilson with a clown Seahawks team like we had last year. We have Bobby, they have Adams. Stud defensively. We had Clowney, they had Wilkerson (who was good enough to get franchised by the Giants). The Jets won 7; Seahawks 12; never mind the Seahawks opponents missed relatively easy FGs to lose games vs. the Russ led Hawks. So, again, please explain how the Seahawks and it’s terrible defense was so much better than the Jets. And if you’re asking, “From the top down,” I challenge you to find the talent difference – I have found, from the most part, that coaches look better when they have more talent. No?

    • 6x2 Stack Monster

Go back and watch Fant vs 49ers decleat 49ers OLB on run play. You don’t often see that in NFL with 2 players at line of scrimmage. Too bad Seattle didn’t lock him up to play RT and long term LT replacement last year.

Doesn’t it seem like every year the same teams jump on first day of free agency the New York teams and Cleveland ,Detroit I could be wrong .

  33. CaptainJack

So long George. I’m happy he’s getting a chance to start somewhere.

  34. Paul Cook

I kind of thought they were going to resign Fant. I guess that 10 mil APR was just too rich. I wonder how much the Hawks are going allot for the forthcoming CAP casualties this year? It’s going to be interesting.

Clowney is such a big domino now. So much depends on that.

    • Simo

They must already have an offer on the table for Clowney, especially after Pete said he’s a big priority. My guess: 4 yrs @ $19m/yr. He obviously hasn’t been blown away yet, perhaps no offers in the $20+ range.

      • Paul Cook

That would be great if your guess is about right and it came to that.

        • Simo

Agreed! He may be holding out to see if any teams come in above $20m. Gotta think he believes he’s in the same class as Clark and Lawrence.

          • BobbyK

He’s not though. He’s better than Frank in run defense, but he can’t get to the QB like Frank can. Those are the guys who get paid. And get picks traded for.

  35. drewdawg11

Not sure how to feel about this. Thoughts?

      • Michael Hasslinger

        Awesome

      • House

I think it’s a solid deal. It’s at market value (or just below) and 2 years gives us some flexibility if he doesn’t play well this year. On the flip side, if he plays well, he’s chasing a big pay day after his age 29 season.

        • Sea Mode

          +1

          My thoughts exactly.

I read 13.7 guaranteed. Not sure if it’s right.

      • Greg Haugsven

You would think around $15 or so. Maybe 10 mill signing bonus and $5 base. Cap hits of $10 this year and $13 next year.

  36. AndrewP

    Yo! Rob! Wake up!!!

    • Ralphy

Hahaha! I was thinking the same thing!

  37. HOUSE

Reed just re-signed a 2-year/$23M deal with SEA

    • HawkfaninMT

I like it… doesn’t break the bank, but fair value. Locks him up through age 29 when he will be a bit older and ability to re-sign will be available if the FO desires. He has the mentality and leadership the Hawks need more of, not less.

Clowney, Jefferson, Griffen, and Beasley and this DL will be ready for the draft!

      • Paul Cook

2 year deal has the potential to keep him hungry on the field. At least that’s how I see it.

        • House

Exactly. I saw guaranteed was a little over $13M total. Leaves little hit for next year if he underperforms and gets cut. I don’t want to think like that. I think he’ll play well without missing games

  38. clyles

    Field Yates
    @FieldYates

The Seahawks have tendered restricted free agents C Joey Hunt and DE Branden Jackson, per source. Hunt finished the season as a starter following Justin Britt’s season-ending injury.

    • Coleslaw

But not QJeff.. weird.. do they have something else planned for 3Tech or are they just already trying to sign him?

      • clyles

Hunt and Jackson were restricted free agents, whereas QJeff is unrestricted he also could end up commanding more and probably appears less likely given resigning J Reed.

        • Coleslaw

You’re right. I checked spotrac but I must have clicked the wrong name and read RFA.

    • Greg Haugsven

Hunt OK but not Jackson. We ate getting nickel and dimed with all these tenders.

  39. Alex H

Never understood the love fest with Fant. Didn’t think highly of him. Always thought Hawks fans had an unusual amount of hate for Ifedi, but somehow always clamoured for Fant. Simply irrational.

    • HawkfaninMT

I don’t disagree. Ifedi consistently started ahead of him even with all the negative fanfare. If Ifedi will cost same or less I will consider a coup for the Hawks

    • Volume12

Im happy for Fant, but that price is insane. $13 mil guaranteed! Bad teams will continue to stay bad.

      • dcd2

So, what do we think the plan is if we don’t sign Ifedi? Bryan Bulaga? Jamarco? Rookie?

Have to think with those options, we are prioritizing Ifedi. Wonder if his number (with us or another team) comes in over or under what his 5th year option would have been.

    • TJ

I hope they can get Ifedi back for a decent price. I don’t want to see them break the bank, but I would like to see him return. I don’t know how much of the negativity toward Ifedit came from his actual play versus his frequent and untimely penalties.

    • BobbyK

Never understood why Carroll started Marcus Trufant over WTIII. Never understood why WTIII was higher on the depth chart than Richard Sherman. Never understood why coaches who coach players in practice can’t know who the better ones are.

  40. Sea Mode

Whoa! Diggs to Bills. Great fit. Pretty steep price, but that was expected.

    Adam Schefter
    @AdamSchefter
    ·14s

Compensation update: Bills are trading a 1st-round pick, a 5th-round pick, a 6th-round pick and a 2021 4th-round pick for Vikings WR Stefon Diggs and a 2020 7th-round pick, source tells ESPN.

    • Sea Mode

      That’s the #22 overall pick.

    • Coleslaw

I freaking knew it!! I thought it would be either Diggs or Amari Cooper, but I knew the Bill’s were gonna spend some $ on a legit WR. Great move for Buffalo, they couldn’t allow Josh Allen to lag behind with a mediocre WR group. They were clearly holding him back last year. This is a great move and will bring Buffalo a lot closer to getting out of the dumpster.

Allen, Singletary, Diggs, Brown and Knox are a good, young offensive core. They have the OL. They have the defense. Now they can add another WR in the draft, maybe a RB and add to the defense and they should be ready to contend in the AFC IMHO.

    • Paul Cook

They were desperate for targets for Allen. Like neon-sign-like.

    • Tecmo Bowl

Seems like a lot to give up for Diggs. Glad we didnt pony up that much.

      • BobbyK

        No doubt!

  41. SoCal12

With Reed back I would like to see us give Raekwon Davis a look. They’re both Bama boys that seem to have a good raport on twitter. I think Reed could be a good mentor in helping unlock Davis’s potential.

    • Yimba

i just hope Reed focuses on unlocking his own potential to be consistently a threat. which he absolutely can be.

      • BobbyK

Anyone ever know why Reed was suspended?

        • yimba

i think if i recall correctly, it was a domestic abuse issue from college or something along those lines. i could be wrong.

          • Hawkdawg

Nope. Domestic abuse that allegedly occurred as a second or third year player for with the Hawks. Long investigation, no charges, NFL still nicked him.

            • BobbyK

So something Schneider and Carroll tried covering up or hiding? Or weren’t allowed to expose (though they’d never want to “expose” anything)?

              • cha

No, just a super long investigation.

  42. drewdawg11

Diggs to the bills!!! First rounder and more.

  43. Greg Haugsven

    Stefon Diggs to the Bills.

  44. CaptainJack

Love Diggs as a player. Steep price and I think we need to try to find a pass rusher with our first round pick.

Happy Josh Allen finally has a legit weapon.

  45. Paul Cook

The Diggs trade doesn’t bother me in the least as a Hawks fan. I never was a fan of that trade idea. Not when the draft is so loaded at WR’s and that there will certainly be some CAP casualties at the position.

    • dcd2

I’m with you, at least at that price. Great landing spot for him though. Bills might just be favorites to win the AFC East.

    • Simo

Yep, I’m with you on this one as well. Never thought Diggs to Seattle was realistic, the price was just going to be to high. Wonder how well he will do in Buffalo, Bills are an interesting team and on the rise.

    • Volume12

I have a feeling that Seattle’s list of targets at WR, draft wise, is gonna look a LOT different than the fans.

      • BobbyK

Like almost every position every year at every position?

        • Volume12

          Pretty much

  46. Zeke

I wonder if the Hawks considered trading #27 for Hopkins? Obviously DL is the top priority, but Hopkins is special and has a great contract for the next 3 years…

  47. drewdawg11

I can’t understand paying that much for a veteran when the draft is so deep this year. But hey, he will love playing with josh Allen… 😂

    • Greg Haugsven

I love it for the Bill’s. That have that two year window to win before Allen gets coin.

  48. Davido

Im so glad we didn’t go for Diggs for that price!

  49. Michael P Matherne

If I were a Bills fan it would be hard not to be a little disappointed with the price given how little Hopkins brought back. Apples to oranges, I know, but still I thought he’d be a little cheaper than this.

    • Davido

Im with you, comparing those is just crazy. I think it’s still a decently fair value a bit over the top imo but they have a big need at WR.

  50. Bigten

Do the Texans become potential trade back partners now?

  51. Greg Haugsven

Looks like Amari Cooper back to Cowboys for 5 years $100 million.

    • Sea Mode

That’s some serious cash. Looks like Redskins were heavily interested too:

      Adam Schefter
      @AdamSchefter
      ·9m

Here’s a twist: the Washington Redskins pursued Amari Cooper today and tried to pry him away. Dallas prevailed.

      • BobbyK

Redskins are worthless. They have a worthless owner. They are a worthless organization. They are worthless. But Dan Snyder is the owner and has lots of money and a big boat. Good for him. He’s richer than us. But a loser owner and judge of football “people.”

Rob would draft MUCH better than any Redskins GM at their first few rounds of picks. I would too, but not like Rob (digital track records of what all of us want are easily researchable).

The older I get – the more I respect smart people and sniff out idiots. Rob = smart. Dan Snyder = moron. Track records (especially digital now days) do not lie.

        • Sea Mode

At least they finally got rid of Bruce Allen… we’ll see if that helps at least a little bit.

      • dcd2

They had to restructure Zeke to do it too. He signed that deal less than a year ago!

Man, I hated the precedent that Elliot deal set (for Dallas). Holds out with 2 years left on his deal in Cabo through camp and they cave. Dak had one year on his deal, shows up and goes to work. His reward was no deal and now franchise tagged.

    • Kingdome1976

That’s how much they should have given Dak….unless they just draft Hurts of course.

      • Hawkdawg

No way. Dak wants $40 million/year. Has already turned down $33….

        • dcd2

That’s not what they’re saying in Dallas. Sticking point is Dak wants a 4 year deal and Dallas wants 5.

          https://twitter.com/mortreport/status/1239728052604633088

          • hawkdawg

That tweet also says that Dak’s been offered $35 million/year, and has turned it down. So I was $2 million low 🙂

  52. Greg Haugsven

If Branden Jackson and Joey Hunt both got second round tenders (I believe both were undrafted) that would be almost $12 million of cap space go e between the four RFA’s.

    • Greg Haugsven

Actually Hunt was drafted so he might get original round. Could be about $10.6 between the four. That could be a first year cap hit of a guy like Robert Quinn.

    • Tom Lynch

The tenders are not guaranteed. Good fall back Incase we strike out in free agency. Atleast, I think that is the thought process

      • Pran

Yes..they can always renegotiate to bring down the cap hit.

    • vanhawksfan

Joey was a 6th round pick. Jackson was a udfa.

  53. Gohawks5151

Reed’s deal is 2 year, 23 million. 11.5 M is probably fair. People worried about the over pay have to be happy

    • Sea Mode

Yeah, I think it’s a fair deal for both sides and the short length allows him to get back on the market before 30 once the new TV money kicks in and the Hawks have flexibility if he doesn’t produce more like his 2018 season.

One less hole to fill in the draft, which makes me happy we can go BPA. Let’s see what happens now with Clowney and Ifedi.

    • Zeke

Eagles got Javon Hargrave for 3 years $13 APY. That would’ve been nice to go with Clowney and Quinn/Griffen

  54. Bankhawk

Having no truck with reality for the moment-my fantasy is that we pass on Hunter Bryant with the TE group already semi-squared away. With Reed re-signed, we land Clowney for a deal that is mutually equitable, grab Griffen, and sign Ifedi at a reasonable rate. This sets the stage, and in the draft…..(drum roll), the Hawks go full-tilt boogie and go up for Isaiah Simons, finding value at WR, developmental O Line and RB in the mid rounds! Just dreamin-heck, it’free!

    • Tony

I would do backflips on that scenario.

    • Sea Mode

Let’s do it! And don’t forget we would still have a R2 pick to scoop up Raekwon Davis or Jalen Reagor who falls to us!

  55. Kingdome1976

If we looked at the signs a little closer we probably would have seen Reed as a bigger priority. I think he is certainly one of the defensive leaders if not THE leader on defense and if we can upgrade our line he might be a 5-7 sack guy in the middle. I’m good with this deal.

    • BobbyK

      He’s Brandon Mebane 2.0.

      “Just” a “good” football player.\

      A stud, really.

    • DC

Reed was a 10.5 sack guy in 2018.

    • cha

If we looked at the signs a little closer we probably would have seen Reed as a bigger priority.

I’m not following. Rob has been talking about Reed’s fit in the culture of the Hawks for some time now.

And many in the comment section have been stumping for him.

You were surprised by this move?

  56. Coleslaw

Dang. Mario Addison to the Bills. I thought he wouldve been a nice option for us. I think they upgraded over Shaq Lawson. They’re so close to being so scary.

    • Volume12

If only tall Jimmy Claussen wasn’t under center.

That defense is excellent though. Most underrated safety duo in the league IMO.

      • Coleslaw

Just let Allen run and throw deep and you’re good lol nah I think he’s gonna have a huge leap this year

        • Volume12

I like that defense a ton and their crazy a** fanbase. For their sake I hope he does too.

          • Coleslaw

Right? Lmao I love their fans so much! Gotta respect that franchise. Awesome to see them actually winning again

  57. Sea Mode

Idk if I’m allowed to be a free agent, but if I was; I like those bright green uni’s. 😂 😉

    • Greg Haugsven

I’d take him back in a second.

  58. Paul Cook

I gotta admit that the idea of trading up in round one for a potential stud is intriguing. I like the Isaiah Simmons idea. I always loved him, but admittedly was confused about how to envision him position-wise in the NFL…was he a safety, or not? Then this site brought me to my senses. Talent is talent, and then the combine.

Ideally, I’d love to trade up for Chase Young. But that ain’t happening. Who else? I love CeeDee Lamb, but that ain’t going to happen. Anybody else someone would trade up for?

At least things are starting to happen in Hawkville. Exciting. No real misses yet.

    • Coleslaw

I would trade up to 15 for Andrew Thomas. If we cut Britt I would trade up to 20 for Ruiz. Kristian Fulton is worth it IMO but Seattle would never. That’s probably it for me

      • Paul Cook

I was thinking possibly Brown. I don’t know. Ruiz I would probably hope for a fall to us. Yeah, that Thomas is a mountain.

        • Coleslaw

Yeah, before Reed I might say yes but idk. If we got the DEs already I probably would too actually. But I wouldnt br giving up more than a 2nd and 4th for like 15 and a 4th

  59. Madmark

I was thinking Yannick was the move they would make and still think its possible. I think they want the numbers, youth, and injury record going forward for next 4 years. For some reason Clowney gives me the shivers. Now that Fant leaving and maybe Ifedi we may be dipping into this draft 3 times and I feel is perfect Talent to do so. RT I think will be the priority pick this year. Whoever they get will have start we just don’t have another tackle available and what they may get may have some growing pains. A later round LT wouldn’t hurt with Brown getting up in years. Maybe a Trey Adams. A center for the future Cesar Ruiz would be a great talent but I think RT more important. I think it may be in the 3rd round comp they get a Nick Harris from UW. I want another RB and I like Dillion in the 4th round. When Carson steps off for a rest I want the option to continue to be physical or to throw a speedy back out there like Hollister. I think Green will be much better next year. He was 20years old when he was drafted a junior out of college. He will have 2 year xp in the NFL and won’t be surprise as much as he was when he got here. If we pick Isiah Wilson I could see the same thing happening. A college sophomore that will need some coaching and xp to make himself a monster RT in the NFL. I don’t think great this year but I’m sure he could be a monster before his contract is up.
With what’s going on in the world. I find myself Isolated and having the NFL continue the process is one of the bright spots in my life, looking towards the Seattle Seahawks. This is my hopes and report from Tacoma. Washington.

    • hawkdawg

Big Husky fan here. Love the guy, but Trey Adams is not the Hawks’ future at LT. He’s not any team’s future, I’m afraid. He is not what he was before the injuries. Late round or UDFA, at best.

  60. Coleslaw

Idk how much $ we have but Robby Anderson clearly has a colder market than expected. I’ll take him for 10m/year if we have room. He could be a huge playmaker here, and fits perfectly imo

    • hawkdawg

On the film I’ve seen he almost looks like a developed Ursua might look…

    • Yimba

i think at this point he is the #1 Remaining WR, so he will for sure still get paid more than the seahawks are willing to pay for a WR. which is great. we have to pay most of the money to DL and maybe OL.

i think this just shows that the seahawks are 100% drafting a WR this year.

  61. Denver Hawker

Overall, it feels like they overpaid for everyone today, but perhaps their hand was forced with so many FA and RFA to tend:

Reed- overpay, but shorter duration helps the deal
Hollister- overpay, but short deal and may have been only want to keep him
Hunt/Jackson- low risk, known quantity backups, probably could have signed in FA for less

At this point, I’m still holding out for Clowney and Yannick, but seems like that will require a cap casualties to make it happen. Fingers crossed they can get Yannick for just a 2nd.

In PC/JS I trust, but gosh it seems like so much promise was made of this offseason and so far the big trades contemplated (Diggs, Campbell) have sailed and we haven’t secured a real pass rusher yet.

    • cha

It’s Day 1 of the offseason. Don’t worry, there’s tons of action left!

The RFA is just as much a tool to keep players from leaving via FA through the big windows as it is to designate salaries.

Hunt, Jackson, Hollister, Moore, the Hawks aren’t locked into paying them those salaries. They can pay the full tender, negotiate with the players for lower salaries, or rescind the tender outright and let them walk and reclaim the cap space. It’s a handy way to restrict the movement of players for a year and keep your cap relatively low.

So the advantage is, they can pursue Clowney, Yannick, Fowler, etc and then go back to these tendered RFAs and negotiate a lower salary or cut them loose. They’ve hedged their bets a bit and possibly filled some important parts of the roster.

      • Denver Hawker

Thanks for the note on the RFAs- that certainly makes the price more acceptable knowing it provides ultimate flexibility.

  62. charlietheunicorn

Good on Fant. He really made himself into a quality tackle in the NFL after starting close to ZERO coming into the NFL. Seattle saw something in him and developed him and gave him the coaching to blossom. I respect him for taking the deal and the Seahawks for giving him a chance to shine. Hopefully, he can continue to elevate his play and his pay with the NYJETS.

  63. dcd2

I would just like to say that I really appreciate being a Seahawk fan. I know some people gripe about Pete’s philosophy or John’s drafts/moves etc. from time to time. But man, go spend a little time on some other teams’ sites now and again and you realize how good we have it.

Jaguars – Complete catastrophe. Took a wrong turn at every meaningful decision of the last 3 years and turned a truly fantastic defense into a joke that no one wants to play for, all while ruining their cap.

Chargers – I used to live in San Diego and the Chargers would hire some of us Marines to do security at the games, so I still follow them. They have a few die hard fans, but for the most part probably the most apathetic fan base in the NFL. Consistently more visiting fans than Bolts fans at home games.

Falcons – Ask a Falcon fan what they think about the direction of the team (and the PSL’s at the new stadium). That Super Bowl meltdown will scar them forever.

Cleveland – The poster child for unfulfilled expectations and mediocrity.

Redskins – Possibly the worst meddling owner in football. 1 playoff win in the last 20 years and no one wants to play there.

I could go on and on, but I’ll leave with the Texans. BoB traded Nuk for a 2nd and DJ’s awful contract on the same day they signed Eric Murray (Who?) to a 3 year $20M deal, and Cobb to a 3 year $27M deal. Their fans are absolutely losing their minds about these recent moves.

Anyway, we have it pretty damn good. In 10 years with Pete & John, we’ve missed the playoffs twice and had a losing record twice (both 7-9). That level of consistency is second to only the Pats who are gifted 6 games/year VS the dregs of the AFC East.

Being a Seahawk fan and having this community is about as good as it gets as a fan in my opinion.

    • DC

If you lived through the great Seahawks’ famine of the 1990s then you no doubt appreciate what we have now. Russell ‘Moses’ Wilson…

  64. Bankhawk

Dcd2: all I can add to that is;Amen, brush!

  65. charlietheunicorn

“Looks like Amari Cooper back to Cowboys for 5 years $100 million.”

Here is the kicker in this whole deal, the Redskins supposedly offered a decent amount MORE and he turned it down. Instead, he wanted to stay in Big D with an owner who loved him.

  66. EranUngar

Luke Wilson is back too so the TE room is set.

Om another note – With Reeds short term contract and the new CBA increasing the low end salaries, the available cap space for 2020 is in the mid twenties at best (including Dickson’s inevitable release).

Getting more then one additional big contract player on the DL becomes very difficult….(Yes, I know they CAN Rob but its becoming less likely)

    • Rob Staton

Everyone thought the TE room was set when Hollister was tendered.

Don’t rule anything out. There’s nothing tying them to Willson or Hollister.

And nothing has changed at all in terms of long term contracts. When they have less than $10m you can make that case. Until then, you’re just making the same mistake. They can structure deals however they want.
