Seahawks re-signing Jarran Reed

Well, we did say it wouldn’t be a Seahawks off-season without some former players returning.

And while the fanbase waits patiently for Bobby Wagner’s inevitable return (I’ve already written my article reacting to that, I’m just waiting to publish it) — it’s actually a more unlikely player who returns first.

Jarran Reed left the Seahawks under a bit of a cloud in 2021. He was only a year removed from signing an extension. They wanted to work on his deal, get something sorted to lower his hit and extend his stay. Reed wasn’t happy and they parted with an air of bitterness lingering. He joined the Chiefs for a year and then spent 2022 in Green Bay.

I like this signing, on a reported two-year deal worth $10m (the reported price, so it’ll inevitably be lower in real money). He’s always been a very solid player. He only turned 30 in December so he’s not old. He had four sacks for the Packers in an active campaign. He hasn’t missed a game since 2019. You can trust him to be stout up front, play the run and deliver some pass rush. He has a warriors mentality.

He’ll be a lot cheaper than some of the alternative defensive linemen available and you know what you’re going to get from him. He’ll do a job.

Reed also plays with an attitude and an intensity which is always good to welcome back into the mix. He’s not a shrinking violet.

I think he’s the kind of piece Seattle needs to go with Dre’Mont Jones as they fix this defensive front. Now they have Reed, Jones and Al Woods as a front three — with the potential to draft someone to add to that. Maybe they’ll also find some money to bring another veteran in?

The only reason I didn’t consider Reed in my free agency piece was because I thought bridges had been burned. Evidently not — and kudos to all for coming together because this is a smart fit for both parties.

Either way — this is the kind of start Seattle needed to free agency. It’s also indicative of a team who I continue to think are likely to do one of two things at #5 — draft Will Anderson or one of the top-four quarterbacks. They’re focusing their intention on big-bodied defenders in free agency, which to me is telling.

I’m on board. This is fun seeing the Seahawks take action early in free agency!

  2. Trevor

Add a Mazi Smith and Keion White or Ade Ade to that Veteran trio and you have a solid group.

    • Lengua taco

If we draft those three, I’ll do the worm the length of Broadway

    • Peter

Looking like a good balance of veteran talent but a good age with Jones to add some rookies.

  3. cha

See a need? Move to fill a need.

This is what we’ve always asked for from this front office.

Never expected them to move heaven and earth and commit $100m to the DL or something crazy. But at least they’re acknowledging 2022 didn’t work on the DL. That’s big.

I think Reed and Jones will be snap-eaters. Reed has always been in the high 60’s/mid 70’s in percentage of snaps and Jones played 81% last year. Nobody on the Seahawks DL was even close.

That may allow them to work in a Myles Adams or even a Jarod Hewitt around Draft Pick and Al Woods.

      Biggest benefit?

It might quell the ‘Seahawks are 100% drafting Jalen Carter’ hooey

      • TomLPDX

We can hope…so tired of this constant Carter talk.

      • Silly Billy

Signed 2 DL, resigned Geno to deal with a lot of easy outs. I’d say the stars are aligning toward us taking a QB at #5..

      • DJ 1/2 way

This also reduces the possibility the Seahawks bring back Shelby Harris at a much lesser salary.

        • Ben

Though I wouldn’t mind the depth if it works out.

I also wonder if the Seahawks can now take some risks on DTs in the draft. You don’t need someone like Kancey, White, or Ade Ade to start right away. They can be eased into the position or just be pass rushers first.

  4. Thomas

Do you think they’re counting on Lewis as the center if they don’t get anyone?

    • Rob Staton

I think whatever happens it’s clear they’re drafting Wypler or JMS

They might add a dirt cheap veteran just for depth

      • Andy J

I didn’t realize that Joey Hunt is still on the roster.

        • hoggs41

I wonder if Oluwatimi might be on there radar as well. Tested well at the combine and has good size. Maybe a fall back from the other two.

  5. All I see is 12s

Read was one of the players picked when they said they wanted to be the bullies again. So far as I know, he always brought that. The goal is to get savage upfront. He has that.

    • TomLPDX

      Yeah, just ask his girlfriend…

      • Big Mike

Oh Tom, ouch….oh wait, should I not have used that word?

  6. Travis

Seems like a fine deal, Reed is a solid player. Would’ve rather had Campbell but Reed isn’t bad

    • Rob Staton

      Go and get Calais too…

      • All I see is 12s

        This!

      • Trevor

        100%

      • Travis

I would not complain, d line would be greatly improved from last year

      • Elmer

        Yes! They need DL depth.

  7. Shane

Another smart move from Seattle, moved into get a good DT on a cheap deal with a solid, reliable guy who will play for u 100% every single game he plays, no wonder whats next to sure up this defence line, still need another NT i think.

  8. Nick

The Reed and Jones signings also continue a theme for Seattle: they do not like playing young DTs. It’s a position group where they value experience over youth. Good get, PCJS!

    • Seattle Person

DTs is a position that is really hard to get production from a rookie. I’m not surprised.

      • Peter

A ton of rookies a like but all this just draft three rookies, job done talk has been as Rob would say “a nonsense.” That would be a total mess for a while. Like actual years most likely.

        • Qwerty

It’s a position that often needs old man strength. Half a decade in an NFL strength program helps get them there. Especially the case for 0 tech.

  9. Cody

So just running through some theoretical situations. If we traded 1.20 for 2.34 & 2.68 (so we’d give up 850 to get 810 in draft value) and get Bobby/David in FA (and nothing else) and the draft looks like this (all players available within a handful of picks within these spots in the mock offseason’s draft)

    1.5: AR15/Levis
    2.34: JMS
    2.37: Trenton Simpson
    2.52: Keeanu Benton
    2.68: Siaki Ika
    3.83: Tyjae Spears
    4.120: Jammie Robinson
    5.148: Jonathan Mingo, WR

THEN our roster would look the exact same as 2022 with the following changes and AR15/Levis sitting in the wings:

    RB2: Penny to Tyjae Spears
    WR3: Goodwin to Mingo
    Center: Blythe to JMS
    Guard: Jackson to Haynes
NT: Same + Siaki Ika to develop
    DE: Shelby + Poona/Quinton to Jones+Benton
    OLB: Same
ILB: Brooks+Barton to Bobby/David+Simpson (and Brooks when he returns)
S: Same + Jammie Robinson waiting in the wings

To me those would all look like upgrades except for RB2 (unless you factor in injuries) and maybe guard is a lateral move.

    • Rob Staton

Not crazy about the return in that trade

      • hoggs41

Its going to be tricky for the second linebacker. Its going to have to be a guy who will probably start the first 4 games or so then be on the bench when Brooks comes back. That second LB will most likely need to be a draft pick.

    • Roy Batty

You’re giving up the chance at a blue chip weapon like Bijan or Mayer. I’d rather not leave the first round in order to pick up an extra late 2nd.

      • geoff u

I doubt either of those make it to 20, but if they are you just change plans and take em

  10. Gaux Hawks

I don’t love it… but I trust the opinions in this room.

Feels like we need one more… Khalen Saunders?

  11. TomLPDX

As a player, good add. As a character guy, not so much. Let’s see how he does this year on the roster.

  12. Luis

  13. BobbyK

So for the first time in years when they say they’re going to fix the DL… they’re actually doing it.

Starting with last years draft, they’ve been the opposite of the worthlessness they created around a half-decade or so prior. FINALLY!!!

Do I dare think there’s hope?

All of a sudden, DT is becoming a strength rather than a perpetual weakness. Not finished, but a gigantically great start. Reed is like a Chuck Darby, Brandon Mebane resigning… just a dude who is going to do a job and do it well. Plug an important role. Nothing more, but that’s okay.

Personally, I’m excited to get Wagz back. I don’t think the same guy, we all know he’s not, but he’ll plug a hole with Brooks out a bunch of next season. And having some help in front of him makes a tremendous difference.

For once, I don’t want to puke at the start of FA.

    • TomLPDX

One thing Bobby brings is stability and leadership to the D. Diggs never really did that. I hope we bring Bobby back on a fair deal but not for some ungodly amount.

    • CD

I disagree, I do not want Bobby back, he was making business decisions for his last 2-3 years with us. He lost his fire and grit.

He only turned it on last year vs the Hawks. It will be a waste of money, and loss of time on the field for a kid to learn.

I would rather grab a LB mid to late in the draft, then get a few to sign on as UDFA, then let the best man win (an only collect $800k for 4 years) and you live with that for the year. Plan B would be grab a vet once rosters get cut down after pre-season.

Anyone but Bobby – move forward not back Pete.

  14. Jonathan Evison

hey rob, with penny departing for philly, would you be surprised to see seattle go after bijan in round 1 (either trading down from five or up from 20)? i love your take on will mcdonald. given the these FA moves on the defensive front, i wouldn’t feel terrible coming out of the first round with will mcdonald and bijan robinson and possibly another pick. knowing how central a strong running game to pete’s philosophy, it’s not hard for me to imagine . . . yeah, he’s a running back, but clearly will probably be the best player on the board whenever he goes . . .

    • Rob Staton

I don’t think Bijan lasts to #20. If he does, he should be considered best on talent. However, it’s a deep running back class so if/when he’s off the board, they can easily find someone later on.

      • Jonathan Evison

oh, i agree he won’t last until 20, that’s why i suggested they might trade down from 5 or up from 20 . . . he just looks like such a “sure thing,” and we’ve already reached with a first round RB in the recent pass (the very guy we need to replace) . . . i wonder if will mcdonald will last until 20, i’m leaning toward not . . .

    • 509 Chris

If we’re talking a luxury pick at 20 I’d rather dream about Mayer. He’s a good enough blocker that he’ll help in the passing game, he serves as the team’s 3rd passing target, and the team doesn’t have anyone currently signed after this season.

  15. Trevor

Colts traded Gilmore and released Matt Ryan to create 30 mil in cap space.

After the Panthers move to 1 could they be considering a move on Lemar instead?

    • Rob Staton

      I would say no chance

That’s not Ballard’s way of doing things

More likely creating room for someone like Orlando Brown Jr I’d say

      Wagner?

Looks more like he’s going to give an update on who the Hawks are keeping their eyes on, just like he did with Steelers.

It would be nice to hear where their spending their scouts time. I did enjoy hearing Schneider talk about how he isn’t hitting the road as much as he did in years past. He’s trusting his scouts.

      • Seattle Person

        I’m 95% sure it’s Wagner.

  17. Thomas Wells

Interested in where folks think reed and jones play in our scheme. Reed was a 4/3 nose in our old scheme. Is he looking at being an end in our base 3/4?

    • Rob Staton

I think he fits really well as a 3-4 DE

      • Thomas Wells

        Good to hear!

    • Seattle Person

Reed started at 1-T in the old 4-3 defense but then started playing 3T the last few years before his exit from the team. So he has enough stout and length to be a 3-4 DE.

    • Steve Nelsen

He played base DE in Green Bay last year in their 3-4 scheme and played well. The Packer fans really wanted him back.

  18. DJ 1/2 way

While I agree with much of the analysis above, I do not see a mention here that the Seahawks emphasis on DT could be influenced by the possibility that DE Will Anderson drops to them at #5.

    • Rob Staton

I’m not sure they’re signing DT’s because of that

They have OLB’s on the roster

And they could easily go and draft Will McDonald if Anderson isn’t available. Even then, it’s a deep EDGE class.

I did mention what I’ve been thinking for a while — that it’s basically one of the QB’s or Anderson at #5

      • Hawkdawg

Not convinced Anderson and MacDonald are fungible. Anderson a much better run defender, right?? MacDonald are more dynamic rusher….

      • DJ 1/2 way

Thanks Rob. I am no expert so I just try to fill in around the edges after reading all the comments.

  19. DarrellDownUnder

    What’s the holdup with Harris?
Trying to swing a trade for a LB?

  20. Trevor

Free Agency is setting up nicely for the Hawks to go

    #5 Richardson / Levis
    #20 Will McDonald
    #38 Mazi Smith
    #53 Wypler / JMS

    • JC3

No way they don’t draft a WR in first 2 rounds. Their WR position is paper thin.

      • Hawktalker#1

Maybe, Maybe not. D and the trenches are the priority

    • Simon

This is exactly how I want it to go. The rest of the draft would be gravy.

  21. Gaux Hawks

Pick Two: Keion White, Will McDonald, Mazi Smith

    • Trevor

      I would rank them.

      McDonald
      Smith
      White

      • Palatypus

I want Keion White and Keanu Benton based on what I saw at Senior Bowl practice.

I still haven’t seen enough of Mazi Smith to be honest.

    https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2023/03/14/colts-agree-to-deal-with-samson-ebukam/

Colts nab Ebukam. Got to think that Buckner is very available via trade.

    • Rob Staton

I’m not sure why that impacts things

      Different positions

Buckner still one of the best DL in the league

  23. Ukhawk

Subject to Georgia’s pro say tomorrow and his agility testing, I think Nolan Smith is strongly in play at 1.20 alongside Will McD4.

Given the latest D line signings, I believe they will look harder at Will A, Will M and Nolan S.

IF Smith tests, and tests well in the agility drills, I think he could have Micah Parsons -type upside.

As an OLB, he can both defend the pass and the run well, reminds me a bit of Clemons

    • Rob Staton

I know I’m repeating myself but I don’t think people realise quite how much of a tweener Smith is. He is not the long, bendy, super quick edge that Seattle has coveted

      • Palatypus

Maybe they really like Kenny McIntosh?

      • Ukhawk

I understand but a) he was super quick and b) maybe it’s changed or needs to change given their new alignment. I think Smith will be highly covested by 3-4 teams. I believe he is athletic enough to project as a great 3-4 OLB

        • Rob Staton

But he’s quick running in a straight line. You don’t see him win that often off the edge with pure speed. Not like McDonald. And he doesn’t have a counter to play off his first move either.

To me he looks about 225lbs on tape rushing the edge. He looks tiny. I think his playing weight is about 230. I just don’t see what he is at the next level other than a great athlete. He’s not typically what they have looked for

          • cha

            Is he Shaquem Griffin?

            • Blitzy the Clown

Kinda. Not a bad comp actually. But I think Nolan is much more physical.

I dunno. I’m not in love with the guy or anything. But his athleticism is noteworthy. He seems better suited to working plays from inside out rather than outside in. His upside vs risk ratio makes sense in R2. Give him a try inside next to Brooks, or whoever starts the season. And if he doesn’t work out, it’s not like you made a big mistake. And if he works out, you could really have something special in him.

              • OakleyD

I agree, if they’re looking at Nolan Smith it’s as an athletic projection to ILB (Rush LB) rather than as an Edge.

If he can move to Edge in obvious pass downs in Nickel packages, also useful.

It is a projection though, teams don’t usually make that leap in Round 1. Much more likely at 37 than 20 imo – and that is still a bit high for me given our needs and likely players available at that time

    • GrittyHawk

I don’t really get the Parsons comp. Parsons was an ILB who sometimes rushed from the edge. Smith took nearly all his snaps from the LOS outside the tackle. Parsons also weighed 8 lbs more than Smith and there were no questions about his positional fit at the next level. They have similar athletic testing but other than that I don’t really see much in common.

      • Ralphy

Well if it’s not a smoke screen, it has to be Darnell Washington IMO. Can’t be McIntosh due to 40 time. If it is a smoke screen, this is when we here that the Hawks are hoping for Carter at 5 🙂

Only top 30 visits I’ve seen confirmed so far are Dawand Jones and Jammie Robinson

  25. Hawkster

AZ trades out of #3 to … #5 for the price of #37.
The QBs go 1,2,3,4 nd AZ takes Anderson at 5 and picks up #37. Both the DEN/RW picks goto AZ for #3.

  26. JN

When is the last time a rookie (highly drafted too) iDL truly instantly popped and was a huge difference maker as a rookie. None come to mind in the last 10 years other than Aaron Donald. These guys take time to adjust to nfl o linemen. People need to stop believing Jalen Carter will be an instant difference maker, and need to realize all signs points to QB at 5

    • Jordan

Deforest Buckner and Leonard Williams were the two that popped to mind as being bigtime right out the gates.

      • JN

Oh yeah I forgot about Buckner. I gotta disagree about Leonard Williams though, I don’t think he ever lived up to his hype. He might be my comp for Carter

  27. Robbie

I’m getting ready tired of this crap I’m seeing on Twitter, all 4 QBs go before 5 so Seahawks have a dream scenario of picking Wilson, Anderson or Carter. I’m not entirely sure how A. People can even seriously consider Carter at this point, B. Think Wilson fits in our system at all. C. Devalue the QB and positional value for the top pick. Oh well D-line is our biggest problem and the only way to solve it is selecting a D line at 5. Foolishness, you have the rest of the draft to fill needs with players with just as much upside and better character. The opportunity to draft a future franchise QB is way more important but oh, we can just worry about that next year. 🙄 Sorry for the rant, this is why I dont do Twitter often It just pisses me off. The draft can’t get here fast enough.

Not trying to go after Brian, but I redid my flooring in the ground level a few years back and needed something to listen to so started from the beginning. His draft takes were really really bad…he wanted players that I had either never heard of, or had a slight inkling of “oh yeah that was someone that played football.”

They have really gone downhill, almost gotten aggressively set on their takes. Except Jeff. Jeff is a national treasure. Of Canada and America.

        • samprassultanofswat

Well if Hawkblogger is dead set on taking a DL at #5 he might not be very happy with the pick.

I will be happy with one of the 4QBs or Will Anderson Jr. It would not surprise me if Richardson does go before Levis. There is a solid chance someone will fall in love with Richardson’s athleticism. The Question is: if Will Anderson Jr. is still on the board will Arizona select Anderson or trade the pick? Even though the Raiders signed Jimmy G. They move up and trade with Arizona.

          • Rob Staton

I don’t understand the people who point blank to embrace why a QB is an option at #5

Or continually speak about an ‘ideal’ scenario with all the QB’s being gone

            It just sounds forced

    • BK26

It sucks, there is literally no other outlet to enjoy the offseason because the overarching narrative is Geno is the quarterback for next 10 years because he has played so well, and our defense is bad and Carter will fix it. I don’t know how you even watch his tape and see something generational. You mention taking a quarterback at 5 or even trading up and they start chanting “shun! shun!”

Anymore, people have ZERO attention spans. They don’t want to have to do any critical thinking. They want to be told what to think by people framing it like they are selling them a car. We have a quarterback already and everyone says Carter is the best so he has to be. No looking at scheme, no listening to the two men who are making the decisions, no looking at what is the best and smartest for the team. No looking at Rob for what he does.

I love this team and there is literally nowhere else to get honest discussion.

  28. clbradley17

It looks like both C Bradbury and Brendel re-signed with their old teams, the Vikings and 49ers. Wondering if C Coleman Shelton is still available? Haven’t seen that he’s signed with anyone, and he’d make a very good signing and hedge along with LBs Holcomb or Tranquill.

Saw this about Shelton – “Fun fact: Over the past two seasons, whenever an LA Rams running back rushed for 100+ yards in a single game, the offensive center was Coleman Shelton. That includes the final 3 games of the 2022 NFL season.”

  29. Robbie

But what would all 12 of my followers do without me 🤣🤣🤣

  30. clbradley17

Noticed a few days ago that the NFL just made 2 positive decisions for us regarding the draft. The criteria was met in the Steelers trade for Ahkello Witherspoon a couple years ago so we get an extra 5th rd. pick.

And we didn’t play or keep CB John Reid from the Texans long enough a year or more ago to have to send them a 7th round pick. So now we do have 2 5th rounders and a 7th, when a week ago we didn’t have a 7th and only one 5th rounder. Great news!

So now we have 2 #1s, 2 #2s, 1 #3, 1 #4, 2 #5s, 1 #6 and 1#7. That’s a total of 10 picks. Gives JS some more options to move up either day 2 or early day 3 for a high rated player that fell, or just fill out the roster more to cut players like JA and others after June 1.

  31. Bballin

One of the interesting things JS has said in regards to character is that some of the guys were in awe of the LOB guys and didn’t compete as well as they would’ve liked with them.

I think off field character (questionable in guys like j reed) vs. football character (great in j reed). Seahawks will live with the off field character, if you are a BAMF on the field.

    • Rob Staton

Not really sure how the first bit lands with the second.

Last year all the players they drafted were high character, mature, strong individuals. You just had to listen to them all speak. Intelligent, driven, focused. That’s the recommitment they’ve made. They’ve highlighted that. They’ve spelt it out to us.

They had great success with that class and they put it down to that recommitment to character. There is no way they are rowing back from it. And they don’t need to. There are four QB’s and one pass rusher at the top of the draft all with A+++ character and maturity. That’s the answer for them. And they’ll build from there — adding more driven, determined, mature, talented individuals.

      We can overthink this sometimes.

      • TomLPDX

I’m really looking forward to see how the first round plays out. We are in a win-win situation sitting at #5, even though we have to leave it to lady luck if we are going to get a QB. Anderson is a helluva consolation prize!

        • Bballin

My only point is “character” is a broad term and I think JS is more talking about on fuel bad ass competitive character IMO from the interviews he’s given.

This isn’t about Jalen carter I’m anti Jalen carter I think is on field shape/competitiveness is appalling. I’m not sure the Seahawks character claims are what everyone else thinks it is.

          • Bballin

Not overthinking at all jarran reed, Frank clark, earl thomas, michael bennett have all had off field issues.

I’d say they’re football character (competitiveness, instincts, determination or all great).

I think Seahawks care about the latter and are okay with dealing with the former

            • Rob Staton

It is overthinking it though. You’re now trying to separate what constitutes ‘character’. All you need to do is look at the 2022 draft class that they say was based all around their re-emphasis on character.

None of those players had issues off the field but ‘good football character’. They were all very mature, intelligent, focused players.

There’s no point trying to decipher beyond that really. And they are specifically talking about how they changed their approach last year. Trying to find answers from drafts 13 years ago or seven years ago is pointless in the context of this because they say the re-emphasis occurred last year. And we saw the types of person they drafted.

          • Rob Staton

Just look at their class last year

Those are the types of player they’re taking

            They were all very similar

  32. Hand of God

    Travis Homer to the Bears…

    • cha

      Adam Schefter
      @AdamSchefter
More running back movement: Former Seahawks’ RB Travis Homer is signing a two-year deal worth a maximum of $4.5 million with the Chicago Bears, per his agent Spencer Cannold.

Surprised the Seahawks didn’t match that. PC has always had a special place in his heart for Homer.

      • Blitzy the Clown

They dipping into this RB class fo sho

        • Rob Staton

          Maybe a double dip

          It’s a good class

          • Blitzy the Clown

Indeed. Wouldn’t be surprised if they take two RBs in lieu of a WR especially considering how well the class caught passes at the combine.

I’ve never seen anything like that — one position group outperforming another at the very thing the other is supposed to be good at.

I was particularly impressed with Charbonnet’s hands

          • geoff u

Certainly hope so, our runningbacks are always injured.

          • JN

Mitchell from ECU is a fun player, day 3 pick 3rd down back. Small

            • Ukhawk

Somewhat relieved to be moving on from penny, homer and Barton to newer pastures

      • TomLPDX

Ok, homer time. I want them to get my man Devone Achane as a day 3 pick to be our kick returner. That dude flies!

        • Rob Staton

He received a big bump in my new horizontal board…

          • TomLPDX

Can’t wait to see your updated Big Board. Hopefully an early day 3 pick. Personally, he WAS the offense this past year in some of A&M’s games as we sorted out the QB position and we lost Ainias Smith (who opted to stay at A&M for one more year this coming year due to his lost season to injury).

        • ErickV

Really like Deuce Vaughn , he reminds me a lot of Darren Sproles . I think he could be a serious contributor as a kick and punt returner.

          • TomLPDX

He was fun to watch. Totally get the Sproles comp.

        • KennyBadger

I didn’t watch much of A&M this year but every time I did I came away impressed by that guy. Although I think the hawks may already have found / stumbled into their kick returner.

      • Steve Nelsen

The minimum tender for Ryan Neal surprised me a bit. Maybe they are scrounging every dollar to bring back Bobby tomorrow. That is the only front 7 position without a starter.

      • James Kupihea

just glad that someone with any semblance of a ceiling could take his place.

    • Romeo A57

I like seeing this. Letting JAGs go and try to improve thr roster with better talent.

  33. Mr Magic

ANy shot we can get Harris back on a cheaper deal? He would be a solid fit to stay in the rotation.

    • Elmer

Yes, depth is needed. They also need to find NT depth behind Al Woods. Mone ended the season on IR and may not be the answer they want anymore.

    • Steve Nelsen

I would have said yes until Seattle signed Reed. Harris will be too expensive for a rotational non-starting role.

  34. clbradley17

Eagles signed Penny, so that’s another of our 2022 RBs off the board. So far the best news after signing Jones and Reed to bolster our DL is that LB Barton won’t be back for sure since he’s with the Commanders now. Relieved not to be grimacing or cursing him tackling air or his own teammate 30 times next year instead of the opponent.

  35. JN

Rumblings about maybe Mike Purcell NT Denver being released. Solid player and was the dude who screamed at Russ on the sideline

    • Steve Nelsen

He is 31 and was mostly a backup last year for Denver but he was OK and he wouldn’t cost much more than the veteran minimum. He is someone to keep in mind if he is released and Seattle releases Al Woods.

      • Rob Staton

They need depth at nose so I don’t think it would require Woods to be cut

        • Steve Nelsen

True. That might be my bias for them adding a young NT in the draft showing through.

  36. Madmark

Don’t be surprised if takes John Michael Schmitz at 37. This center they want and he won’t be at 52. Their are 3 teams that need a center and is the number 1 in this draft. The reason they is because he can step and start right away. He took over in his 1st year from a guy that had place the position. He played 4 years and everyone knew he was the leader of the offensive line. So don’t be surprised I just had him drafted at 35 by the colts.

    • Rob Staton

Center’s don’t typically get taken that early

And he isn’t a Tyler Linderbaum type

  37. Forrest

Tony P teasing = Aaron Rogers to Seahawks?

Green Bay gets Geno, Adams, Diggs and Fant.

    • Mick

No chance and I don’t want him here anyways.

    • Forrest

      Doubt it. But, I’m worried.

    • Romeo A57

The Packers also wanted Barton and Homer so the deal fell through after they were signed elsewhere

  38. Kuya

One thing is apparent during the FA period. We are picking/talking to guys who has experience in the 3-4 scheme. I feel that’s why we haven’t signed Bobby due to fit. I feel we made a play for Hargrave (who played in PIT 3-4 before PHI 4-3) but was priced out and pivoted to Dre’Mont Jones (Den 3-4), who IMO is a better fit for this scheme. We made a play for Zach Allen (Vance Joseph 3-4), but pivoted to Jarran Reed (GB 3-4). QJeff & Poona fit 4-3 alignment. This is why I don’t see us going after Frank Clark or even Bobby, unless for sentimental or extreme deficit of LB depth. I’m sure we prob made a play for Larry Ogunjobi, but was prob priced out.

Rob, I think we should look at players who have experience in 3-4 and/or have the Seahawky traits to play in 3-4. I feel this is new territory for JS’s scouting team when evaluating players and makes it fun for him again.

Remaining top FAs who played in 3-4
    Lavonte David – LB
    SMB – CB
    Marcus Peters – CB
    Taylor Rapp – S
    AShawn Robinson – DL
    Trey Flowers – Edge
    Drue Tranquill – LB
    And more…

    • Peanut

You’re telling me we could have Rapp in a seahawks jersey but instead have Adams? Oh man.

  39. samprassultanofswat

Don’t want Aaron Rodgers. Would rather have Geno Smith than A-Rod.

    • 509 Chris

Really? The Rodgers hate is on another level. To be clear I don’t want the team spending any picks to trade for him or committing the kind of money he’ll want, but I believe he’s a better qb than geno and even at this late stage in his career could win more games this season than geno. Obviously he’s not coming here anyway but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he has a Brady in Tampa 2021 kind of season.

      • samprassultanofswat

        509. Geno Smith is all in on team first. BTW: What do you propose to give for Aaron Rodgers? Rodgers? Rodgers is owed 60 million this year. What would you do with Geno Smith? The Packers want to go with Jordan love.

  40. samprassultanofswat

Why is it that players that leave the Seahawk organization and go for greener pastures want to come back? I think that speaks loud and clear about the Seahawk organization.

    • Shibu

Could be that but also wonder if its because we are the only team that offers them anything and if it wasn’t for Pete liking “his guys” they’d be out of the league (i.e. Luke Willson)

      • samprassultanofswat

Shibu: If Seattle was the only organization interested in Jarran Reed. Then why did Seattle want to sign Reed on the second day of free agency. It’s highly unlikely that Seattle was the only team negotiating with Reed.

  41. PJ in Seattle

Travis Homer going to the Bears on a 2 year deal. Good thing this is a deep draft for RB talent.

    • Palatypus

One could argue that Travis Homer getting signed away is a sign that it is not.

BUT, the Bears STILL have the most money to spend after taking two of the best linebackers and a defensive end early in free agency. Homer is a good special teamer, so, they can afford that.

I could totally see the Bears taking Bijan Robinson at #9.

They are the team to watch.

  42. Tomas

Not impressed, more mediocrity … again.

    • UkAlex6674

Not every player can be a superstar.

And I don’t quite put Reed in the JAG category.

    • Rob Staton

      What were you expecting?

Browns to send over Myles Garrett for an exchange of fourth rounder’s?

This is a perfectly acceptable free agent signing

  43. Old but Slow

It will be interesting to see workout numbers for Israel Abinakana, the Pitt RB. Nice size, and some nice tape. Looks fast.

  44. MattyB

Does the Panthers signing Andy Dalton indicate they are also thinking Anthony Richardson to sit behind for one year or is it a experience QB behind a ready to go QB

    • Rob Staton

The signing makes it more likely, sure.

But I think they needed a veteran anyway. And it’ll be a hard sell for that franchise to trot out Andy Dalton next season after trading up to #1

    • Big Mike

Well if it does mean Richardson is going #1 overall, our Robbie is buying a (virtual) round for the community here cuz he’ll be 15K richer. And the round may be virtual, but the cash will be very real.
I want him for Seattle, but it would be a nice consolation prize if Robbie made a bunch of dough off the pick.

  45. DriveByPoster

I always liked Reed as a player & was disappointed when he left. Glad to see him back again. I agree with others that the ‘hawks will be dipping into this year’s RB pool & probably double-dipping. Personally, I really like Zach Charbonnet’s play & would be very happy to see him in a ‘hawks Jersey. He would be a great JL Williams to Walker’s Curt Warner!

  46. Peanut

From my pov, signing 2 DL’s gives a chance to not be so forced to draft one early. Alot of fans google “seattle team needs” and just draft from that, not actual best player available. As mentioned in earlier comments on this thread, Hawkblogger is giving me actual heartpain with some of his takes. Refuses the thought of a QB and best scenario would either be a trade down cause more picks = better roster. Also Jalen Carter or Wilson at #5 = Superbowl, then they go 180 and just say “better QBs next year” as if you want to be picking in the top 3 any year.

Also, how about just cutting Jamaal Adams lose and sign Taylor Rapp to a nice deal? Or is that the Washington fan in me just projecting?

  47. SpennyDunks

Would love to bring back Harris at a cheaper rate if his market isn’t what he expects. If he goes from our best to our worst DL, then we can sleep pretty happy at night, Campbell sounds great as well. Harris/Campbell and Mazi Smith please.

    • SpennyDunks

If we manage to grab Richardson/Anderson at 5, and Mazi Smith and Schmitz in the second, who does everyone want at 20?

      • Shibu

I don’t know why, but Michael Mayer is just the embodiment of a football player to me and I think he would be a really solid pick if he lasts that far. I could easily see him becoming a safety blanket for our QBs. After him I’d probably say Will McDonald just has those special traits that could make him really good.

        • 509 Chris

I really want Mayer too. Robs been talking about him for ages so I paid a lot of attention to him. The team will need a tight end out of this draft or next anyway.

      • D-OZ

        mcdonald,white or Washington…

    • Simon McInnes

Agree. Don’t see Harris as part of the problem last year. But please to have Reed back all the same. But regret the loss of Travis Homer

  48. Trevor

    Day 1 : Jones
    Day 2 : Reed
    Day 3 : Ashawn Robinson ?
    Day 4 : Drue Tranquil ?
    Day 5 : Bobby on a cheap 2yr deal?

    • Rob Staton

I’m ready for three signings in three days

      • Trevor

Just think if they can add Robinson now it opens everything up in the draft on the defensive side of the ball.

  49. Romeo A57

I can’t stop laughing at the thought of people genuinely upset at the thought of Homer not being on the team. RB3 is exactly the kind of position you want to go younger and cheaper. Getting attached to players who produce very little is beyond me.

He amassed 453 rushing yards and 464 receiving yards in four seasons in Seattle. This little bit of production will not be missed.

    • D-OZ

      +1

    • Feindt

He is one of the best pass protecting RBs in the league, hence his frequent use on third downs. Also a good contributor on Special Teams. However always an underwhelming rusher..

    • Shazzy

It’s about the pass blocking not the rushing production

  50. Trevor

    My non Seahawks bold prediction.

Colts trade #4 to Commanders for #15 , a mid round pick and a 1st next year.

Colts then sign Lamar Jackson to an offer sheet using the two Commanders 1st round picks as the compensation.

Irsay’s stick it Baltimore one last time.

    • Trevor

This would be 100% an Irsay move not Ballard.

      • Rob Staton

But Irsay has ceded at every stage so far to Ballard

And this isn’t a Ballard move

I think there’s more chance they trade for Samuel L Jackson personally. Ballard knows he can get a good cheap, young QB at four.

        • Trevor

Thats a good point. You are probably right they are likely clearing cap space to get an OT or impact WR for the rookie QB. Would still like to see it happen to shake things up.

Not really seeing many landing spots for Lamar to be honest. I certainly would not want to the the owner / team on the hook for a $200 mil fully guaranteed deal who a guy who has not finished each of the last two seasons.

The #Seahawks aren’t tendering RFA LB Tanner Muse, per source. Muse played in every game for Seattle last season.

    • GrittyHawk

Special teams. He only got significant defensive snaps in 3 games last year, with a high of 38 in week 18 after the Brooks injury.

    • cha

      Glad they are not. Smart.

Dare I say past Seattle teams would gladly forked over the $2.627m tender for a guy who was mostly ST.

  53. Sea Mode

I doubt it because of the two centers that fit us available in the draft, but maybe he could be a trade target?

    Jeff McLane
    @Jeff_McLane
    ·11h

“If I got to learn under him for another year, or play alongside him for another year, I’m going to be OK either way.”

Cam Jurgens has prepared for the inevitable Jason Kelce return, which means the center may move to guard.

    • Rob Staton

Nah, they are locked into him as the future at center for when Kelce goes

Expectation is he’ll play guard until then

  54. Trevor

    From Jim Nagy

SOURCE: Georgia DT Jalen Carter will only do position drills at today’s pro-day. No 40 or other testing. Carter weighed in at 323 pounds, up 9 lbs from Combine.

The red flags keep piling up. But yeah the Hawks are definitely taking this guy at #5.
