College football open thread & notes (week 6)

Here’s what I’m watching this weekend in college football:

Missouri vs Florida
Tennessee vs LSU
Ohio State vs Michigan State
BYU vs Notre Dame
North Carolina vs Miami
Alabama vs Texas A&M
Oregon State vs Stanford

I’ll also be attempting to get access to the other key games involving quarterbacks as usual. I’ve also been busy watching non-QB prospects this week and have a whole bunch of notes ready to publish (stay tuned).

Quarterback watch

I’m not expecting a difficult day for C.J. Stroud against Michigan State. For well over a year now, the Spartans have been disgusting defending the pass. Stroud should have a field day here.

The game I’m probably most interested in is Jaren Hall and BYU against Notre Dame. This is the start of an intriguing double header for Hall (he faces Arkansas next week). Can he perform better than he did against Utah State? Can he go and get a big win against the Irish?

We’ll see if Bryce Young plays against Texas A&M. He’s listed as a game-time decision. This game is particularly intriguing given the bad blood over the summer between Jimbo Fisher and Nick Saban.

Tyler Van Dyke will start for Miami against North Carolina. There’s no doubt he’ll be fighting for his job now. I’ll watch the game and check him out but it seems clear his best bet will be to transfer in the off-season and have another go next year. I still think Kentucky would be a good destination for him in 2023.

Speaking of which, UK and Will Levis host South Carolina in a game they really should win. They need to bounce-back from the defeat at Ole Miss.

I will watch Hendon Hooker for Tennessee against LSU and Tanner McKee for Stanford against Oregon State. Elsewhere, Dorian Thompson-Robinson and UCLA host Utah in a very interesting game I wish I had access to. The Huskies and Michael Penix Jr go to Arizona State.

The Florida game against Missouri will have already started when I get home from work but I’ll watch it all back on catch-up. It’s a good test for Anthony Richardson against a Tigers team who pushed Georgia all the way last week. K.J. Jefferson and Arkansas go to Mississippi State. I would like to watch this game — but not to see a quarterback. More next week.

That Florida game looks to be intriguing.

Really hope he declares as a selfish fan.

    Rob,

Have you ever considered writing some kind of productivity book? Seriously, how do you do it?

    • Erik

I suspect ROIDS. There should be an asterisk next to all of Rob’s posts:)

Amazing support from the community too.

        You guys are awesome.

  3. Nathan W.

No love or attention for the Jayhawks? Gotta be one of the more feel good stories of American sports this year besides the Mariners.

  4. 509 Chris

Now you’re questioning the integrity of the entirety of SDB? How dare you? Honestly this made me laugh hard.

    • 509 Chris

Supposed to be a reply to Erik.

  5. Blitzy the Clown

I’ll be flipping between Texas v Oklahoma and Missouri v Florida to start.

    Then Utah at UCLA.

Really looking forward to Wazzu at SC tonight! Go Cougs! Beat them Trojans!!

    • Big Mike

Yes, Go Cougs. Since they Couged it when the played Oregon, maybe they won’t do it again this season.

    • BoiseSeahawk

Having nearly beaten Oregon, I’m interested to see how Cameron Ward performs against the Trojans.

      Also LB Daiyan Henley.

  6. Blitzy the Clown

WRT your last post What’s happening at the top of the draft…

It’s hard to see how Levis and Anderson aren’t 1 and 2 regardless of who goes first. Even if Seattle have two picks in the top 10 (which is unlikely), it still won’t be enough to get there. They’d have to include a future R1 at least.

I think Levis could make a significant rookie impact in Seattle’s current offense. Even more so behind this new OL with a full season of experience together. So if they did make the move, and I’m not advocating one way or another (unless it costs more than both 2022 R1 picks and their 2023 R1), I would think it would be with the intention of starting him in 2023. Especially considering his age.

Seattle need both a QBOTF at least a trio of new impact players on defense — one each of DT, LB and S.

If the draft isn’t giving them options to fill DT, LB and S early for value then the better play is to go in for the QBOTF, lock that position down (with manageable cap) for the next 5 seasons, and starting next season.

    • AlaskaHawk

Maybe the best play is to trade first round picks for future first round picks. Preferably a future without Pete Carroll to screw things up.

  7. TomLPDX

I’m afraid the Texas A&M/Alabama game will be a dud. I have zero expectations for my Aggies today…I just hope they show up and don’t embarrass themselves too badly.

  8. JJ

I am digging Hooker. Not a first round pick, but I can see a 2nd.

  9. Elmer

Rob, what are you interested in seeing from Oregon State? Or is Stanford’s QB and OL the attraction?

    • Rob Staton

      It’s on British TV

  10. Silly Billy

It’s rare you see Oregon State on SDB. Go beavs!

Beavs run a very vanilla offense that works because their OL collectively is one of the best in the country. Not much NFL-caliber stars on offense except for maybe Luke Musgrave @ TE.

    Defense has some solid DBs.

  11. Blitzy the Clown

Anthony Richardson is starting to show off.

  12. JLemere

I wouldn’t bother watching Tanner McKee. Watched his games against the Huskies and the Ducks and he is not comfortable with running a RPO offense. If he wants a shot at the NFL, he needs to transfer out of Stanford ASAP.

  13. BoiseSeahawk

Hendon Hooker has had some absolute dime throws against LSU today.

His 40yd TD to his TE Hyatt was beautiful, and he throws in front of the receiver on redzone crossing routes unlike Russ.

I’d rather draft Levis though. Hooker doesn’t seem like as much a complete player and doesn’t have the size to be a Josh Allen type QB.

  14. Bllitzy the Clown

Florida got away with one there at the end but kudos to the Gators defense for holding on.

  15. DriveByPoster

Out of the random hat, I am watching Texas Tech/Oklahoma State & have just witnessed one of the most entertaining openings I have seen. From the start of the drive, when Texas Tech went for it on 4th & 1 on their own 30, to the final 27-yard TD pass, the TT redshirt freshman QB, Morton, has been firing bullets.

And now they go for on onside kick on the restart & recover it, but one of the Oklahoma players called for a fair catch on the high bounce & negates the recovery. 2 plays later Oklahoma are in the TT end zone. It’s 7-7 after 3 minutes of the game.

This one could get really wild. I am settling in with snacks at the ready!

    • Robert

That onside kick penalty was stupid. In my opinion fair catches should not be allowed on onside kicks. It takes away the whole objective of the kick. And they are already hard enough to recover for the kicking team.

      • DriveByPoster

Well the rule is the rule, so it was a heads up play by the Oklahoma player & probably not a great decision by the kicking team. Whether the rule is stupid or not is a matter for debate, but as I know almost nothing about the kick-off rules, I am not really in a position to comment.

The game is pretty entertaining though. 3 minutes into Q2 & it’s 21-17 to TT. At this rate we are going to end up with a basketball score.

  16. Blitzy the Clown

Fox absolutely buggered the broadcast of Utah/UCLA

  17. Peter

Still early ish in college but it feels like there’s a lack of real powerhouses this year. I know there’s winning teams but something seems a bit off. Hopefully it makes for some exciting conference championships.

  18. Roy Batty

DTR just picked apart the Utah defense. Great touch, zip and knew when a keeper is the best bet.

    • Roy Batty

Charbonnet punishes the defense, then DTR finesses a touch pass in the end zone…beautiful drive for a TD. The defense is on its heels guessing at what the hell is going on.

UCLA is taking under 3 minutes to demolish the Utah defense on each of the last two drives.

      SDB knows how it is…

      • Blitzy the Clown

Repeatedly. And well in advance of the herd.

  20. Roy Batty

Good god, I just checked the other football scores and noticed the Tampa-Cleveland baseball game is currently tied 0-0 in the 15th inning…holy hell.

    • DriveByPoster

      Are you not entertained! 😀

    • Seattle Person

No ghost runner. Both teams struggle scoring and their pitching is very good. Not a good combo.

      • Rob Staton

I am not a baseball man

So feel free to tell me why this isn’t possible

But why, if it’s level after nine innings, can’t they determine the winner by recorded hits?

        • Roy Batty

It’s so rare that a rule change isn’t really needed.

Plus, pig-headed tradition. To put it into perspective, they are using a robot umpires to flawlessly call balls and strikes in certain minor league games. Yet, even though it’s a much better result, the traditionalists consider it blasphemy.

          • Roy Batty

Imagine a Premier League match going an additional 2 hours, without a single shot on goal until the final minute.

THAT is what just happened in Cleveland.

        • jed

That would be similar to football determining a winner by who has the most yards. It’s possible, but is kind of arbitrary and it’s playoffs so they want to have an actual winner.

        • Seattle Person

That’s a great idea but hits in baseball can be so fluky. You can literally do everything you can in a swing and get a base hit.

The ghost runner rule got major pushback so your idea Rob would absolutely drive the old timers’ brains insane.

          • Seattle Person

            *literally do everything wrong

          • Roy Batty

I just noticed Robbie Ray doing Robbie Ray things. Dude is getting shelled.

          • Rob Staton

This is why I’ve never really got into baseball

I am ignorant about the sport but to me every ‘hit’ feels like a hit and hope swing

In cricket you have a huge variety of distinct shots

            • Seattle Person

Kind of. Baseball is pretty unique but it’s hard to get into if you don’t grow up with it. It’s the same feeling that a lot of Americans have about soccer if I were to be honest.

It took me awhile to understand the little unique aspects of the sport. The thing that annoyed me for the longest time was the concept of a tie and being ok with lol.

              • Rob Staton

Funnily enough I’ve been to three MLB baseball games

I went to watch the Blue Jays twice on a trip to Toronto in the early 2000’s

I went to see the Mariners in 2006… against the Blue Jays. Seattle lost 10-0.

So these two playing in the playoffs intrigues me — the only two teams I tend to see live 🙂

                • DriveByPoster

Baseball is one of those games that I don’t really follow but I’ll happily watch it if there is no other sport on. Haven’t seen any MLB games but I did see a game in Japan. It was a great night out. Go Carp!

                • Seattle Person

And I have fallen in love with soccer or football. The World Cup is amazing. Your domestic and Euro cups are really unique and way different to what we’re used to. I love the idea of relegating teams.

In a lot of ways soccer is similar to baseball. It’s a sport with so many failures. Literally 10-11 guys to try to stop you. There are more similarities than one might think.

                  • Rob Staton

Meh, I don’t see similarities to football (let’s use its real name!) and baseball.

Aside from the potential for low scoring games

I don’t think people realise how fast and exhausting pro-football is

            • Roy Batty

There’s a reason the NFL and NBA surpassed baseball in popularity many years ago.

Here’s a small example as to why many people just can’t watch it: the batter steps up to the plate, digs in his back foot, gets set to swing, then calls a timeout, adjusts the velcro on his gloves, digs his rear foot back into the dirt, gets set to bat, then the pitcher waves off the pitch called by the catcher, the pitcher walks off the mound, rubs the ball, the pitcher accepts the catcher’s call, the batter calls timeout again…and we start over with the routine.

And that can be for JUST ONE PITCH.

        • DriveByPoster

My guess would be that, if the objective is just to get bat on ball, most batters would be able to just bunt the ball into the ground. So the last couple of innings of a close game might just turn into a bunt snooze-fest. Essentially you are giving the players a reason not to score & the cure would be worse than the disease.

          • Hawks4life

As big of a Football fan as I am baseball will always be #1, behind that UFC and then Football. Unfortunately the NFL has become less and less what it was, baseball hasn’t changed much and UFC has gotten better.

            • AlaskaHawk

I rather enjoyed the Phillies and Cardinals last night. (The only one on a non ESPN Broadcast).

The Cardinals went into the last inning ahead 2-0 and exited the game losing 3-6. It was absolutely fun to watch.

        • Old but Slow

I can understand how a game you have not grown up with can seem strange. Baseball is an odd duck, to be sure, but cricket?

          • Rob Staton

            Cricket is incredible

            A less boring baseball 😂

  21. Blitzy the Clown

Pretty impressed with the Bruins offense overall. Couple of interested prospects on their OL. Not to mention their TEs Michael Ezeike and Hudson Habermehl.

I ran the PFN simulator the other day and nabbed Levis, Bresee and Charbonnet with the Seahawks’ first 3 picks.

      • Roy Batty

I must admit, the simulators were very entertaining last draft.

Completely unrealistic when doing trades, but very entertaining.

Must admit, saw a bunch of couples wearing Bama gear at Disney World. Guys were bang average and all looked the same, women all 9/10 range

    • Thomas

Yep. People never believe me when I tell them that.

      • Roy Batty

LOL. The last time my wife and I went to visit friends in Newport Beach, CA, we walked around town for a bit before dinner. My wife asked my buddy, Paul, “So, is everyone in this town a swim suit model?”

  31. Blitzy the Clown

Oh come on Bruins where the hell is the defense!

  32. Blitzy the Clown

    Kazmeir Allen!

  33. Roy Batty

Russell Wilson has partially torn lat.

  34. AlaskaHawk

I can see why people like DTR , but realistically the UCLA team is better than the opponents they have played. So it’s a bit like watching other teams like Ohio or Alabama play a lesser team. Is DTR worth a draft pick? Sure why not.

    • Roy Batty

The guy was threading the needle with 20 yard frozen ropes.

Hell yeah he’s worth a pick.

    • Blitzy the Clown

UCLA may be better than Utah, and should be ranked higher come Monday. But Utah is still a top 20 program regardless, and known for its defense. A defense that was shredded by the Bruins today.

So, yeah. He’s definitely worth a draft pick.

    • AlaskaHawk

I liked the long touchpass to the receiver going down the right side for a touchdown.

      • AlaskaHawk

        Left side!

    • Rob Staton

This is a weird take Alaska

Their last two wins have been very impressive

      • AlaskaHawk

I don’t think it is weird to observe that in their overall schedule they are playing weaker teams. He is good and should have a good record. His passing is helped by a strong 200+ running game.

I did say he was worth drafting!

        • Rob Staton

You said they are way better than their last two opponents

          They aren’t

These have been two really good wins

          • AlaskaHawk

            Yes they were good wins.

  35. Rob Staton

Will Levis out with a foot injury, not playing today

His crappy O-line has finally managed to do it

    • HOUSE

It’s a bummer we don’t get to see him play, but it may also be a blessing he isn’t getting murdered because of his crappy OL

    • Rob Staton

Bryce Young also not playing today due to injury

      • HOUSE

Right after the UGA game, they were saying there isn’t really a timeline on Young’s shoulder. AC joint is probably a couple weeks. Being a QB, I’d fear that injury would linger/be at a high risk of re-injurying.

    • icb12

In a boot too. Not a great sign generally.

      • Rob Staton

In fairness if you have any kind of foot injury now you end up in a boot because I think they help with healing (?). He was listed as a game time decision.

  36. Rob Staton

    Congrats to the Mariners

I watched the end of a baseball game the last two nights for the first time ever

Guessing he won’t be shut down though.

    • Sea Mode

Superman complex. I’d think you’d just about have to tie him down to keep him off the field.

Although, it would be a pretty convenient out for him from all the pressure and scrutiny. Blame the struggles on the injury, take a few games off to heal and get out of the spotlight, then make a strong comeback.

Either way, our draft picks should be looking good…
