Open thread Saturday

Let us know who you’re watching today. On my schedule is Florida State vs Miami, Notre Dame vs NC State and Tennessee vs Texas A&M. One of the players I’ll be looking at closely is NC State running back Matt Dayes. Keep an eye on him.

Watching the red river game. #7 CB Thomas from Oklahoma is ballin out. Multiple pass break ups and looks to have some size. Made a great open field Tackle before half time out numbered 2 to 1 on a hurry up spread out screen play to the wide out. Shed the blocker and blew up the play. It looked like Oklahoma wasn’t lined up properly and beuchel tied to take advantage of the numbers and Thomas laid waste to it. Awesome

    • HawkFan907

Another great tackle. Oklahoma has some great players out there.

  2. HawkFan907

It seems like you can throw out a lot of the game tape for N. Dame/N.C. State. They shouldn’t be playing out there.

Oklahoma’s Dede Westbrook made himself some good money today. He looks like he has game-changing speed after the catch, and has high pointed the ball very well today.

Mixon just had a huge blunder on special teams.

  3. Volume12

Love Texas RB D’Onta Foreman. So raw and still so much potential.

    • Volume12

Great balance, good lean, consistently breaks arm tackles, power in his legs, puts one foot in the ground and makes guys miss, patient, the speed he has at his size is crazy.

      What a talent!

      • Volume12

How many 245 lb backs have his speed to get around the edge?

        • HawkFan907

          Derrick Henry-esque for sure

          • Volume12

Kinda. I like Foreman’s feet better. Nice little ‘short steps.’ Henry was more of a strider.

And Foreman has that wiggle too.

What’s crazy about him, he’s still figuring out who he is and looks like he’s probably 10-12 pounds heavier than he should be.

  4. Volume12

Glad I’m not the only one who noticed this kid last night.

This is Boise St WR Cedrick Wilson- 6’3, 185 lbs.

Love that Boise St team Vol12, Cedrick Wilson is great. Also I really would like to see Texas RB D. Foreman for the Hawks. It must have been an off day for Mixon, I thought he would be superior to Foreman but Foreman and Perine out played Mixon today. They had fantastic performances.

    • Volume12

Like you said, off day. Good players have bad games. It happens.

Boise St RB Jeremy McNichols is a stud too. One of the most complete backs in CFB.

  6. East Side Stevie

Whats your Twitter name v12? Im gonna give you a follow

    • Volume12

I don’t have one anymore unfortunately. I kept getting myself in trouble. I’m going to get another account soon. And I’ll let you know.

For now, you can find me here my man. Ask away. Let me know what ya see.

  7. AlaskaHawk

Oklahoma State wide receiver James Washington having another great game with 66 yards before half. Had almost 300 yards last week. Could be a late first rounder to third round draft pick.

  8. Aaron

    Tennessee vs. Texas A&M

    Myles Garrett…

Still waiting for Cam Sutton to show up.

Trayveon Williams has had some nice runs.

    • Rob Staton

Cam Sutton has had an ankle injury for two weeks. He won’t return for a while.

  9. Volume12

Tennessee DL Derek Barnett had a PBU on A&M WR Josh Reynolds 25-30 yards down field. Impressive.

That’s a 270 lb cat. Was beginning to think he was slow and not very athletic, now I’m thinking his athleticism might be underrated.

    • Kenny Sloth

Derek Barnett is a throw back. On tape he sticks out like a boner at the club

      • Volume12

lol. WTF? He sticks out like…huh?

        • Volume12

Tennessee RB Alvin Kamara is a weapon man. Dude has burst for days.

This RB class just keeps getting better and better.

          • Rob Staton

            He has been sensational today.

            • Volume12

Why do these kids loose the ball at the goal line from behind or drop it before the cross the plain? Seems like every week a big game is impacted by it.

              What is happening?

            • Volume12

              260 total yards of offense.

He’s a game breaker. Tilts the field. And he’s right in our wheelhouse. One of the most complete backs in the country for me. Can impact the game on all 3 levels. Every time he touches the ball, I sit up in my seat. Exciting.

              • Volume12

And 3 TDs. That last one was all grit.

        • Kenny Sloth

Sorry I was trying to think of something that would stick out besides a sore thumb

          • Volume12

No it’s all good. Thought it was funny as hell. Hadn’t heard that one before.

  10. Volume12

This VA-Tech defense is confusing the hell out of NC QB Mitch Trubisky. His footwork is a mess. Great defensive game plan.

    13-33, 58 yds, 0 TDs, 2 INT’s.

  11. Volume12

Damn. BYU RB Jamaal Williams is gritty man. Another huge game.

    29 rush att, 162 yds, 2 TDs

Just has a ton of energy and a huge personality. Was kicked off the team twice IIRC. A testament to him to work his way back on the team and prove belongs.

    • teejmo

He was kicked off only once, for the 2015 season. I attended BYU, and their honor code is pretty strict. His season-long suspension was probably nothing major in non-LDS communities. During today’s game they showed a clip of his warm-ups, and he was playing catch with cameramen, BYU fans, MSU fans… He’ll probably be a fan favorite wherever he ends up in the NFL.

I still question his home run speed. 61 of his 162 yards today came a long run which probably would have ended up as a touchdown for most NFL backs. But he’s got so really good balance, vision, and burst, and he loves mixing it up between the tackles.

      • Volume12

Yeah, your right. He was suspended for the season opener against UCONN 2 years ago for underage drinking which is stupid.

Didn’t he run track? Looks like a mid 4.5 runner to my eye.

        • teejmo

Yep. That’s the honor code, which honestly isn’t that hard to follow… if you grew up a Mormon, which Williams didn’t. For any other school, he’d probably have never been suspended. Honestly, I’m impressed he decided to stick around – what with a full season-long suspension followed by a coaching change, would anybody really have blamed him for just transferring to a different school?

As to his speed, I might be nitpicking, but I swear that’s at least the second long run of the season where he was caught from behind, and not because he eased up at the end like that RB for A&M today. He does have a great burst – I can’t really think of many other running backs who can reach six or seven yards quicker than him.

          • Kenny Sloth

If you wanna talk about getting caught from behind, watch some McCaffery tape tape

            • HawkFan907

For real, it seems like every time I’ve seen Williams get caught from behind, it is by a 180lb corner. He didn’t get caught from behind once against Toledo. He runs with so much violence I love it. What a great player, He was one to watch for me today against a legit D-Line and he balled out. One of the most impressive RB performances today. His pass pro was awesome as well. Not a lot of the major scouts are high on him, so he could be a steal in the 3rd. Lower that pad level a little bit more (which is an adjustment for former track athletes) and he would be an ideal three down back at the next level.

              • Kenny Sloth

I’ll have to take another look because I don’t watch the BYU run game much

                • HawkFan907

It didn’t hurt that Malik McDowell was out the first half for targeting the game before. He was very hot-and-cold the second half. He showed top-10 talent, but disappeared at times.

                  • teejmo

Unfortunately, that point is kind of mute, since most of the BYU offense came in the second half.

  12. Volume12

Why the hell is Oregon wearing navy blue and black?

Oh well. Dawgs about to thump ’em.

    Woof! #Purple Reign

    • Kenny Sloth

Oh yeah. We’re starting a Freshman QB. Gonna be a long afternoon at Autzen

      • Volume12

Enough of the taunting flags. Dumb AF.

The NFL is wondering why their ratings are waaay down? No personalities, no fun. Everyone is supposed to be all… Hulk Hogan. ‘ Say your prayers, take your vitamins, drink your milk before bedtime.’

Kids can’t act like 18-22 year olds?

        • DavidM2

I said it last week I’ll say it again, this Udub team is looking for for a Natty. John Ross looking like high second early first round status. Ross and Gaskin having career days.

The death row D is elite for the college ranks.

          • DavidM2

            *fit for a Natty

          • HawkFan907

Ross is looking good. He has first round talent. I always get nervous about thin receivers coming back from major injuries and staying healthy at the next level. P-Rich comes to mind, given he is thinner than Ross.

          • HawkFan907

Ross is looking good. He has first round talent. I always get nervous about thin receivers coming back from major injuries and staying healthy at the next level. P-Rich comes to mind, given he is thinner than Ross.

            • DavidM2

Ross great at catching with his hands. Ultra fast with great moves off the line reminds me of a combination of Tyler Lockett and Percy Harvin. Could the Hawks be looking at him as an insurance policy on P- Rich? It may be interesting if Sowell and the offensive line continue to gel as the season goes on.

              I think V- 12 calls him DJax 2.0

              • Volume12

Yup. He’s got easy speed. Just electric.

Would be damn sweet if he was a Hawk.

    • DavidM2

      Ha V- 12,

Love that those Oregon unies say webfoots instead of Oregon interestingly funny.

      • Kenny Sloth

I’m an Oregon fan and that is going to be an ominous reminder of this game for a long time. We didn’t even wear school colors.

        • DavidM2

There will be burning of Webbfoot jersies!!

      • Volume12

I don’t get why they went with those units. I’m a diehard Seattle Sonics fan, or was, so maybe I’m partial to the Green and Gold, but black and blue? Web foots?

        Why Oregon? Why?

        • DC

Because they didn’t want to associate this game with anything they are ever going to wear again.

Of course, you need a walk in closet to keep up with their prolific volume of outfits.

          • Kenny Sloth

I love that aspect of our team

These ones had the fight song inscribed on the sleeves

        • Group captain mandrake

There were a whole bunch of teams doing throwbacks this weekend (Pitt and NC State for example). Evidently the web foot thing refers to before they were known as the Ducks.

  13. Nathan W.

Greg Gaines… could watch him and the Husky D all day

    • DavidM2

      Love me some Porkchop

  14. Kenny Sloth

    R.I.P. Oregon’s season.

UW’s LT looks great. Greg Gaines looks legit

    #5 Mathis flashed

    • DavidM2

Hey they could still be in for a Taxslayer Bowl

      • Kenny Sloth

I can’t scout when I’m faded, I look up and UW scores. Gaskin looks legit though. Really gets upfield well

The only Oregon fan in this bar

        • Aaron

“The only Oregon fan in this bar”

I’ve been enjoying Oregon’s fade in the PNW. That bandwagon reached fever pitch. Go cougs!

        • DavidM2

Oregon will be back. College programs have their off years too. It seems like Udub just got over about 25 seasons of being mediocre to absolute crap. I don’t think it’ll last that long for u guys tho.

          • Volume12

Ducks or the ‘Web foots’ ? need a new HC.

There was a reason Udub struggled to beat Oregon previously. 2 actually. Head coaches. Ya gotta get ‘your’ guys.

            • Kenny Sloth

Agreed never liked the appointment of Helfrich, perhaps new defensive coordinator Brady Hoke could be a candidate?

              • DC

Chip Kelly could be a candidate by the end of the Niners season unless they get smart enough to fire the GM. As a Husky fan I’m fine with Helfrich or Hoke as the HC.

  15. Jeff

    Rob,

I’d appreciate your thoughts on DB Dante Barnett of Kansas State. If you get a chance to watch any of his tape from this season, please make sure you get ahold of his matchup at Stanford!

    Thank you!

  16. HawkFan907

I’m flipping back and forth between Miami/FSU and Arizona/Utah. Checking out the hype on Kaaya and the Utah O-Line.

    • Kenny Sloth

I’ve liked Miami’s QB he has a nice feathery touch on his throws, but a class-common low release point.

JT Barrett apparently just had a relative stinker. Can’t wait to look at that tape

      • HawkFan907

Kaaya is a better prospect than Goff was last year. He can make the throws, he just makes some dumb mistakes.

Utah’s line has looked atrocious. There was one drive where they had 5 false starts and two holding penalties…. at home. I like Asiata as a pure guard, but it looks like their whole line including Asiata need to focus. It has been an embarrassment so far.

        • DavidM2

          Don’t tell me Rams this

  17. KD

Jake browning is just an assassin with the ball in his hands. The touch that he showed tonight was superb and he would have had a lot more yards had he not slightly overshot receivers on a few occasions. What an incredible player to watch.

  18. D-OZ

    What a Beat-down!!!GO DAWG’S!!!
