Some final thoughts ahead of the draft

— A year ago Tony Pauline correctly reported the Seahawks had a deal in place to trade down with the Atlanta Falcons. Hours before the start of the draft, Tony is now predicting the Seahawks will trade with Cleveland. The Browns would get #18 to draft a left tackle (Mike McGlinchey or Kolton Miller) and the Seahawks would get picks #33 and #35. That would be an incredible haul for Seattle. Right at the start of day two they could address two huge needs. It could be a cornerback (Isaiah Oliver), defensive lineman (Josh Sweat, Maurice Hurst), running back (Nick Chubb, Ronald Jones II), receiver (Christian Kirk) or offensive lineman (Austin Corbett, Billy Price). In terms of dream scenarios, this is it.

— Bob McGinn (another extremely well sourced reporter) says the league thinks Seattle will draft Shaquem Griffin at some point:

Some teams appear convinced that Griffin will join his twin brother, Shaquill, as a member of the Seattle Seahawks. Shaquill, a third-round pick last year from UCF, had a strong rookie season as a starting cornerback.

“Just the vibe I’m getting from things,” said one scout. “Some of the comments made by some of their guys about the type of kid he is and the football player he is and what he embodies.”

— Whatever the Seahawks do over the next few days, I hope there’s a strong focus on fixing the running game. New needs have emerged with Richard Sherman and Michael Bennett departing. Yet Seattle’s running game remains the biggest issue on the team. Pete Carroll can put together a defense. But for two years the running game has been a mess. And Carroll wants to be a running team. This is a draft set up for a team to fix their running game. It’s a very strong draft for offensive linemen and running backs in the first two rounds. If you really want to fix the run, commit to it.

— I’ll be doing a live blog throughout the first round. I’m also set to do a podcast with Kenny after the first round and make an appearance on the Beast Pode. I’ll post the audio on here later. I’ll also be doing a write-up either reviewing Seattle’s first round pick or assessing the remaining options for round two.

Thanks for the coverage, Rob. I’ll bet it’s a bit nicer time wise being in the States!

That really would be a dream scenario to get 33 and 35. A godsend.

    • GerryG

Especially since 33 is a prime pick to trade back a little more with, get a 3rd rounder, and still have 35

      • hawktalker#1

Could we really be catching a break this year with draft picks? Fingers and toes crossed!!!

  2. Coleslaw

The Kevin Hart ” Alright alright alriiiight” clue maybe is meant to be read as ” all right” as in the right side of the field.

Braden Smith played RG and RT. Alriiiight let’s go!!!

  3. Coleslaw

The cat and Shaq clue seemingly couldn’t be more obvious. Wiggle around the draft board for ‘Shaq’ Griffin.

  4. SoCal12

Cleveland will be my number 2 team this year if they give us 33 and 35. This might be why we’ve been looking at so many high second round talent. Would be big for us if this is the deal in place.

    • hawktalker#1

      +12

  5. Awsi Dooger

Well done on this blog. Great commenters also.

That #33 and #35 sounds too rich but I’ll root for it. The league is more interesting when the Seahawks are a force.

As a Dolphins fan I don’t know what to root for tonight. I’m desperate to move on from Ryan Tannehill but only Rosen seems possible to drop that far and the third down numbers are a major concern, along with UCLA’s pedestrian won/loss record with him in charge. I like numbers and don’t want to pretend they don’t matter.

BTW, my sister can see the Magic Kingdom from her house. Well, the fireworks anyway. She lives in Winter Garden.

    • Rob Staton

Nice. I love Orlando. I appreciate it’s not for everyone but I’d live out here given half a chance.

    • CHawk Talker Eric

I’ve seen both Rosen and Darnold play in person. Rosen is the superior talent, but Darnold has superior character. Take that for what you will.

I was going to say I think Rosen is the best passer since Luck. But that’s not a really a ringing endorsement, given Luck’s career so far.

    • Group Captain Mandrake

Just remember that whatever talent Rosen has – and I think he’s talented, if maybe a little soft – is dragged down by the anchor that is Jim Mora Jr.

      • Thy Hawk is Howling

        man·drake –

A Mediterranean plant of the nightshade family, with white or purple flowers and large yellow berries. It has a forked fleshy root that supposedly resembles the human form and was formerly widely used in medicine and magic, allegedly shrieking when pulled from the ground.

A Nightmare Before Christmas adorer are we Captain?
First thought was Sally worrying about the Deadly Nightshade hurting Jack.

I believe you may be intriguing?

Would you care to Elaborate on the use of Mandrake and are you really a Captain?

Also what player do you want to become a Hawk the Most?

        Cheers,
        Cragie

  6. Misfit74

This is gonna be great! #GoHawks!

  7. Ashish

#33 & #35 would be BIG win. Yes there will possibility to move down few spots and collect a 4th depending on how many players are on the board.
Please hawks fix the run the game it’s golden chance next year we can add missing defense pieces.

  8. Nick

Oh my goodness I am so ready for this! Let’s go!

  9. OregonHawk

Pick #33 is a premium for a trade, with all the teams seeing overnight who is still on their board

  10. mishima

Will Farrell as Frank ‘The Tank’ Ragnow.

    • mishima

      ETA: Clue 1.

  11. CHawk Talker Eric

Well that’s one of my 2 Day 1 predictions: SEA trading 18 to CLE

My other prediction: SEA trade ET to DAL

  12. Greg Haugsven

33 and 35 would be sweet but why would Cleveland do it when they could do 64? Unless they only want to lose two picks instead of three. Dont get me wrong as I would take it all day. If they could also trade Earl for 50 and 116 we could potentially have 33, 35, 50, 114, and 120. Less than an hour left and my wife thinks Im nuts for being this excited about something. She asked me what I want her to do wit the kids and I said this:

Just pack them in the car and drive east on the freeway until 7pm then turn around and come back and the day should be over.

    • Ed

That’s why they invented Chuck E. Cheese

    • Layne

Maybe someone offered more than the Browns, Seahawks called them back., you have to give us more or we will do the other trade.

  13. HawksBill

Under an hour to go, so I thought I would post my prediction for tonight:

Obviously if Cleveland offers two 2nd round picks they will jump at that, but if not, in order of their preference:

    Tremaine Edmunds – EDGE/LB
    Vita Vea – DT
    Taven Bryan – DL

If one these guys doesn’t fall to them, they will trade out of the first round.

    • hawktalker#1

I think they’re jumping no matter what.

  14. Volume12

One thing about this draft in general? It’s maybe the most up in the air one in terms of teams drafting from top to bottom that I can remember in a long time.

    • Kenny Sloth

Notice how I didn’t post a final first round mock??

  15. LLLOGOSSS

What a major haul that would be. Anyone know what the point value is for that trade in the trade chart?

    • HawksBill

      seattle #18 = 900 points

      cleveland #33 + #35 =1130 points

      • hawktalker#1

Yep. Would be great and a little Browns-ish as well.

  16. Sea Mode

Well, better get this out there before it’s too late! Final Seahawks 2018 mock.

Thanks to everyone for a great draft season, and here’s to the Seahawks knocking this one out of the park!

    TRADES

    – CLE sends R2P33 + R2P35 to SEA for R1P18.
Using Pauline’s reported trade scenario. Hey, they are the buyers in this case, so they have to pony up.

    – DAL sends R2P50 + R4P116 + 2019 R1 to SEA for Earl Thomas.
It’s been taken too far now for nothing to happen.

    – CLE sends R6P175 + R6P188 to SEA for R5P156.
They see someone they like and move up for him in mid R5.

    PICKS

    R2P33- OL Isaiah Wynn, Georgia
A tempting offer was on the table to move down again from this spot, but PC/JS realize they shouldn’t try and get cute again with a potential pro-bowl OL is sitting there for them.
Wanna kickstart the run game? Draft this guy (and his teammate…)
Another Isaiah (Oliver) was sitting there on the board for them as well, but run game takes priority.
    [fallback: Billy Price, Ohio St.]

    R2P35- RB Nick Chubb, Georgia
PC’s ideal back. Smart, tough, reliable with a quiet fire lit inside him. This is the year to grab a RB early.
[fallback: RB Ronald Jones II, USC]

R2P50- WR Christian Kirk, Texas A&M
Seattle gets a perfect replacement for PRich, hedge for Lockett, and future leader on offense all in one pick. Grab a WR early or you miss out.
    [fallback: WR Anthony Miller, Memphis]

    R4P116- Shaquem Griffin, UCF
If there were ever a “Seahawky” backstory and attitude, it’s him. No more excuses for anyone. The importance of re-establishing the team culture can not be underestimated. Oh, and did I mention he happens to be a very talented player as well?
    [fallback: DE/OLB Ogbonnia Okoronkwo]

    R4P120- S Armani Watts, Texas A&M
Seattle took the leader of the Aggies on offense earlier, now they come back for the leader of their defense. A guy who flashes many qualities like Earl, albeit not the elite long speed, which ends up dropping him to R4. Comes in to compete with McDougald at FS.

    R5P141- DT RJ McIntosh, Miami
The quest for an interior penetrator will not end. He just has that knack and ability to shoot gaps, penetrate and blow up plays in the backfield. Will hustle 50 yds down field to make a tackle. One of the few to get the better of Quentin Nelson a couple times, which speaks to his potential. Inconsistency vs. the run push him down to R5.
    [fallback: Derrick Nnadi, Florida St.]

R5P146- CB Isaac Yiadom, Boston College
I’m staying away from Holton Hill for now due to off field stuff. It could check out in the end, but until I’m sure, I’ll say no thanks. Enter Isaac Yiadom. (as suggested by several others here)
From the little I’ve watched, he comes across right away as an intelligent player. The next Richard Sherman needs to emulate that part of his game as much as the physical profile. Good patience in press coverage. Aggressive and sticky in coverage. Well spoken in interviews.

    R5P168- TE Chris Herndon, Miami
Similar upside to Ian Thomas IMO at a much better value. We have two blocking TEs now, time to grab one with some pass-catching upside as well. (though he’s no slouch blocking either)
[fallback: TE Tyler Conklin, Central Michigan]

    R6P175- S Tony Brown, Alabama
ST demon. Seahawky competitor. Win getting off the bus mentality.

    R6P188- LB Leon Jacobs, Wisconsin
“Mr. Versatility” backs up all 3 LB spots and contributes on ST.

    R7P226- CB Jordan Thomas, Oklahoma
Since we miss out on Nick Nelson, here we grab another nickel CB prospect. As Rob pointed out a while back: since 2010, only four CB’s have run a sub-4.00 short shuttle and measured with 32 inch arms.
He also made tons of plays on the ball. Had 2 INT and 17 PBU his junior year alone. 8 INT total in his final 3 years.

    R7P248- WR Keith Kirkwood, Temple
    Awesome person and incredible catch radius: 6024, 221, 33.75 arm, 81 wing, 35 vert, 4.45 40yd

    UDFA
    – QB
    – LB/SS Oren Burks, Vanderbilt
    – RB Ryan Nall, Oregon St.
    – FB Khalid Hill, Michigan
    – DB Tracy Walker, Louisiana-Lafayette

    • Kenny Sloth

      Nice working with you gentlemen

      *80’s handshake and victory cigar*

      • HawksBill

Ditto. This is easily the best place for ‘Hawk Heads.

        • DCD2

Pixelated original Tecmo Bowl high 5’s all around!

Despite not having a couple of my favorite guys in the draft on here… I’d take this haul any day. Nice work!

    • Rik

I’d celebrate this draft haul for days!

    • hawktalker#1

Sweetness – and I don’t mean Walter Payton.

      • hawktalker#1

I would say that definitely was a strong effort to fix the run game (and a lot more)!!

    • drewdawg11

I would take that draft all day, every day.

    • Rob Staton

      Would love Wynn + Chubb

  17. Kenny Sloth

    Twenty minutes boys

      • Ben Ft. Worth

I just got Matt Hasselbeck’s autograph!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!

        • Ben Ft. Worth

Shaq Griffin looks so nice, and very humble. Hes literally standing right next to Guice. Guice has been a total douche to all the fans here. I do not like his attitude or swag. And I’ve been banging the drum the hardest on him. Grab him if hes in the 3rd, but omg when blew off that kid the way he did, no thanks!!

          • DCD2

            Have yourself a blast Ben!

          • DCD2

Are you wearing Hawks gear? We’ll keep an eye out for you

  18. HawksBill

Wow, looks like the Seahawks are serious this year, I don’t see a live web feed on their website of the draft room.

  19. Ground_Hawk

“Alright, alright, alright” lyrics from a Decemberists track. Nick Chubb was born in December.

    • Thy Hawk is Howling

      Nice catch Ground_Hawk ! I’m down

  20. DCD2

Nice warm welcome for Roger 🙂

  21. Largent80

I’m tired of them drafting what they think is the next big thing for the defense while the offense is in stink mode. Draft a REAL running back, not some wannabe like Ballage. Get it done John Schneider. Quit fin around and get us a REAL rb.

  22. JimQ

I’d like to see the EDGE, RB & WR positions addressed with the first 3 picks.

My final picks early in draft——> EDGE/OLB-Lorenzo Carter, WR-Antony Miller & RB-Rashaad Penney.
IMO-Plenty of CB’s to pick from = less need for high pick at that position and could still sign Maxwell if
they don’t get better. Griffin in R-3/4 sounds like a lock & I like OG-Wyatt Teller with a Rd-5 pick.

  23. Layne

Wow KJR Radio is about 3 minutes ahead of NFL network.
