Thanks so much for these Rob! Making the treadmill time fly by!

    • RomeoA57

I am happy to have something to listen to today for the drive from Tacoma to Portland.

      • Rob Staton

It was 5am when we did this over here so apologies if I sound knackered 😂

        • Rando31

          Rob,
The Seahawks gave Pete Carroll a second chance at life after college. They gave him carte blanche on personnel decisions, the GM, and his QB of his choosing. They gave him everything. I can’t imagine that he would choose to repay the organization by selecting the next young quarterback and not allowing the next head coach to choose his own (even if that’s after his contract expires). If it is the plan to draft a QB early, I would think Pete would step aside at that point. Conversely, if he doesn’t step aside before the draft, I would assume they punt on QB. Is that a fair assessment?

          • Rob Staton

No, there’s no reason to think that would be the approach.

      • Juju's

I make this drive often as well!

Where about in Tacoma are you from? I’m near 6 and orchard

        • RomeoA57

I am from the Portland Area(Clackamas) but work all over. Tacoma, Bellevue, Phoenix, LA, etc,

    • Palatypus

I listened to it when I took my 13-year-old dog Daisey to Blackwater State Park for the first time.

      Thank you for this.

It gets talked about a lot here but what the Seahawks currently lack is someone to take charge of negotiations and building for the future. John seems to be an excellent talent scout and great at drafting. Pete brings energy and builds culture. The huge Achilles heel on this team has always been making the tough moves in the offseason. Getting the right guys signed and not overpaying for players Pete likes personally, or overvaluing less important positions while neglecting the trenches. Toward the end of the last few offseasons cha will write up something about the bold decisions the franchise needs to make to cut dead weight and have money to spend in the right places. I read it and think wow, that would get things on track, but they never do any of it. Signing dre jones this year is the closest they’ve been since the Avril/Bennet deals to make a splash in the right places. Cha said Adams and Diggs both needed to go last offseason. That was proven correct. Rob was lukewarm on Geno and was one of the only voices pointing out that last year was really 2 halves, 1 great and 1 very mediocre at best. His high opinion of Levis and insistence that they should take a qb was also proven to be correct. Why does the front office not have voices pushing these moves?

I love the appearances you do with other voices. Do you ever watch Brandon Nelson? He’s typically pretty rational if not a bit boring. Solid takes though and he gets into the cap like SDB guys seem to like to do too.

    • ShowMeYourHawk

I think it’s “Brendon Nelson,” if we’re thinking of the same chap. His YT vids are usually well thought out with data to reference but yes, they are DRY and typically too long. Also, his occasional draft videos are rife with questionable and curious opinions.

He does typically avoid stirring the pot with smug, “debate me, bro” takes like you’ll encounter on Hawkblogger’s podcasts or Seaside Joes’s lengthy screeds, so that’s appreciated.

  3. ShowMeYourHawk

Slow down, Rob! You’re spread thin enough with sleep deprivation as is, no? 😆

    • Rob Staton

I won’t lie, my alarm went off at 4:45am for this one and it was not easy 😂

      • Dave stacey

So that was 1 hr 45 mins of sleep?
        Fair play!

        • Rob Staton

          Something like that 😂

  4. Peter

    Great pod!

Really been fascinating this year to think about a thing Adam Nathan has been saying for two years that the farther away you get from Seattle the relationship with the team changes.

I’m not vested in Pete one way or the other.

I’m more clinical in my viewing and think 10 years since a ring? That’s a nice long run.

Hoping for big changes but definitely not banking on it.

    • Big Mike

Speaking of Adam………….REALLY happy to see a Hawks win for him the other night, especially considering he had to sit in a damp, chilly environment after all that hassle switching flights, etc. If you’re around Adam, let us know a bit about the trip and the in game experience.

      • Peter

        Definitely this!

  5. cha

Well done Rob, and thanks for the shout out.

    • Rob Staton

No problem man, you do an awesome job!

  6. Lawrie

Merry Christmas to all, and let’s hope a terrific new year

    • Rob Staton

      Merry Christmas Lawrie

  7. Big Mike

Well done Rob. Sorry it was so early and thus a slog. I especially appreciate that you shouted out to Curtis too. He adds a lot to what is already a frantastic site. You guys compliment each other well having different strengths. Shout out to you for recognizing that and utilizing it. Best Hawks site on the net and it ain’t even close.

    • Rob Staton

Thanks Mike, Curtis has added so much to SDB

      • RomeoA57

        💯

    • DriveByPoster

Yes, I second that. Letting someone else come & play on your personal blog is a bold step. I am pleased that it has worked out so well. Good work cha! Also, Merry Christmas to Lawrie above & to everyone else too!

      • cha

        👏

  8. KAMAL

congrats rob your everywhere and it’s not draft season yet great job

    • Rob Staton

      Thank you!

  9. Palatypus

    Geaux Saints?

    • nfendall

It pains me to say this but I would rather the Rams win tonight. The worst record that the Saints and Broncos can have, the better our 3rd round pick we get can be.

    • LouCityHawk

Easy for me to cheer for Saints, even with some of their less savory coaches and players, on account of Mickey Loomis.

One of my favorite Seahawk ‘What If’s’, what if Mike Holmgren got Mickey Loomis to stay on as Co-GM or something.

  10. Palatypus

Hey Rob, the next time someone asks you how to pronounce your name, “Is it Staten or Staton”, you should just say, “It’s Stallion. I’m Rob Stallion.”

Then snap your fingers and be transformed into a Fitzmagic outfit.

    The wife will love it.

  11. Anthony

Isn’t it amazing how one drive can sweep so many of the team’s issues under the rug? Pete is praised as a god and no one has even mentioned his stupid time out management. What is with the Pete worship from this fanbase and the local reporters? They all have the “I really hope Pete picks me, I really hope he loves my question; I want him to think I’m so cool!” vibe.

And meanwhile I’m still pissed off about his inability to adjust in-game, his painfully basic plans that relies on having superior talent, and the man cannot manage timeouts or challenges better than a toddler.

    • Rob Staton

Someone on the Seahawkers UK page posted a picture of Carroll on Thursday and said they were so grateful to have PC as coach ‘because it could be Josh McDaniels’ instead.

This is how elements of our fan base think.

      • Peter

With Festivus right around the corner….there’s about 10% of me that wants Pete gone just for this kind of super weird fan connection that is wholly one sided.

It couldn’t be Josh McDaniels. Because Josh McDaniels gets fired everywhere. And he would have been fired here and we would have moved on. Just like commentors have mentioned and you did a great job on this recent podcast. It goes Holmgren, a true coaching legend league wide, Mora a complete failure, and then Pete.

Whether it’s a week after 2024’s playoff loss or two years from now…folks I’ve got bad news, it’s fairly likely it will play out just like that again.

        And that’s okay.

The fourth quarter stuff really gets to people. It can be fun. But I’d like to see my team hang 28 in the first half on a team and beat anyone down. Or at this point be a team that other teams know if you let the hawks get up by 10 its over. I’d like to be sitting in the driver seat talking about whether or not we get the 1 seed.

Part two. If I can be honest I also want Geno gone for selfish reasons. Sure he’s average. Sure he can’t win unless every single thing is absolutely dialed in for him. Sure might be getting paid 7-8x more next year than Mayfield got this year to be the lesser qb…because ‘shrug emoji’ Hawk blogger and others just can’t see any free agents we should spend that money on so might as well be Geno…

Really though I’m pretty over the number done in to fans brains by the departing of Wilson and how it made the whole fan base split into these different groups. That I guess we showed him ( wilson) with Geno. If you say Geno is average and write out the stats and how we are .500 with him as the qb and say him getting a probowl is no different than carr, cousins, goff also being selected for the probowl…..fans will call you toxic.

At this point I wouldn’t mind a new coach and a new qb even if both were bad for 1-2 years together. If that made at the end of it fans that pulled together. Doubtful that ever happens again. But one can hope.

        • BK26

Took a few years, but Josh McDaneis eventually led to Gary Kubiak and a Super Bowl….

This weird dynamic with Pete and the past with certain fans is getting creepy….

          • Peter

Feel like the Dan Quinn talk is “bargaining.”

Some of this stuff has become so weird. What are folks going to do in any of the following scenarios:

            1. He retires. This year or after next. He’s had an amazing run. Has nothing to prove to anyone. There’s a good chance we are more or less the sane next year so he just thinks it’s time.

            2. In two more years the team is or isn’t sold and he has one of those Holmgren, Reid style five win seasons and has to go.

            3. Or….the one I want no part of but is actually painfully possible. Time reaches out and catches us all. For the old heads I’m not making any “age related,” comment….beyond what if the ship is still steady if unspectacular and being 73 or 74 means that things happen to you at 73, 74 and he can not continue.

            • BK26

Yeah..there are some…unique? situations that could pop up rather than the default “Pete will be back.”

That’s why I don’t want Quinn (who I do like). It’s too much like Pete, feels like Pete’s decision, bargaining to fans that are Pete cultists. Too much involvement for those that shouldn’t be involved.

      • bmseattle

Don’t listen to 710 espn Seattle unless you want to hear how amazing Pete is, right now.
Brock Huard, especially, is fawning all over him.

        • Rob Staton

We were so close to a serious discussion about the future of this team

And one drive, preventing a five game losing streak, has blown it away

          • Big Mike

But Rob, all those issues are gone with the wind. People who think they’re still there are just haters.
Man Brock used to be good.

  12. Peter

    Man….

The rams feel ridiculously hot right now. Nacua just playing lights out.

I’m fairly confident that Seattle will win 4 in a row after losing 4 in a row. Decently hot. But what the rams are doing including the loss in OT to the Ravens feels like they should be a team that can upset the nfc playoffs.

Still think the niners but rams…they feel like the dark horse people want our team to be.

    • ukalex6674

      Spot on.

Playing solid football in all three phases. No one will want them if they make the playoffs.

For me, Mcvay should be in COY discussion.

      • bmseattle

        I agree about the Rams.
The49ers are clearly the class of the NFC… but I think the Rams have the best chance of upsetting them in the playoffs.
It would really be pretty funny if that happened.

  13. Peter

I feel certain the next coach is Dan Quinn.

But an out of the box coach: Dave Canales. Knows the ‘culture,’ but more importantly has had a few qbs with their best years under him.

  14. Yikes - Cut Adams Now

Have had to work full time and on my days off the last 2 weeks. I’m not sure if it was here, but saw a couple days ago they’re talking about shutting Yikes man Adams down for the year. What is it this time? What a waste of money and picks this guy is and will continue to be for another year or 2 in dead cap hits.

    • Rob Staton

I don’t think we will see him play for the Seahawks again.

      • Big Mike

STILL trying to temper my hope…………

        • Rob Staton

          No need

          He’s done

  15. AlaskaHawk

Seahawks just happen to be in one of the strongest divisions in football. Somehow the 49ers get stronger every year. The rams are usually very tough. And the Cardinals are inconsistent but can put together a good effort. It kind of sucks but the Seahawks have been getting into the playoffs most years.

I know we all want more and analyze all the faults and bad/good moves the team has made. Let’s just say the playoffs are a first step. That isn’t complacency – it’s knowing you have to get to the playoffs to go farther. Anyway I was reading that if the Seahawks beat Tennessee they will probably get into the playoffs. So it looks like the team is about where they were last year in abilities. No big surprise since the same quarterback is on board and same coaches.

    • Peter

You said it though. We get to the playoffs most years. There were debates about the merits/virtue of playoff experience vs draft stock last year.

Is the team better, worse, or same as last year?

The playoffs are imminently in reach. It’s where we go that’s the question.

According to my own very unscientific findings…the Rams currently have a top ten offense. Seattle is bottom half of the league in offense and defense. Do we make any noise in the playoffs or are we yet again one and done?

It just doesn’t feel like a building block.

    • Rob Staton

So how do you take the next step?

Change the coaches and the QB

      Which is the point

      • BK26

Those simple of changes could be HUGE too. Thought about it the other day: how much worse would we be in the AFC where we are vastly outclassed at quarterback, but also at coaching? How many coaches would just pick apart this defense and throw it in the middle of the field?

      • AlaskaHawk

We have all discussed steps. I’ll add cut the non performing players. Big picture will be the sale of the team which will guarantee coaching changes.

I’m going to enjoy the ride till then !

    • Ben

How many years are we supposed to spend on the first step then?

      • AlaskaHawk

This is two years into the reset. If the Seahawk actually find a good quarterback they could season him in 3rd (next) year and the 4 th year draft they would have a shot at going pretty far into the playoffs. Some where in that timeline the 49ers will have to make cap cuts of good players and might be weaker.

On the other hand things might continue the same next year because Pete is under contract through 2025 so the whole schedule would be delayed. Or if the fiat Qb doesn’t work out that would cause a delay. Yuck!

  16. Group Captain Mandrake

Nice work being the voice of reason, as usual Rob. It must be a bit gratifying to see the local media start to come around and see the common sense you’re usually putting out there. Keep up the fantastic work, and have a great Christmas!

    • Group Captain Mandrake

      Usually? That should read always.

  17. cha

Jamal Adams game status for Sunday listed as OUT

    • Big Mike

      *dancing*

Rob has been assuring us we’ve FINALLY seen the last of the peacock in a Hawks uniform. This is one more step to fruition.
      GOOD RIDDANCE!!

      • 12th chuck

that would be an early Christmas present!

  18. Quinn

What will the community do if Pete was given an extension after the Titans game?

    • Rob Staton

We won’t have to worry about that because it’s as likely to happen as me scaling Everest in a scuba-diving outfit

  19. PJ in Seattle

Somebody wake me up when it’s the start of the Spencer Rattler era in Seattle.

Or honestly, any young gun QB coming out that they’ve invested proper scouting and capital in. For all the reasons stated, we need that guy. A bridge to nowhere leads… nowhere.
