Seahawks add C.J. Spiller

The Seahawks have signed C.J. Spiller today, adding much needed depth to the RB position.

With Thomas Rawls out and C.J. Prosise still recovering from a wrist injury, Spiller can act as a rotational back and a third down back. He was strangely cut by the Saints after week one despite not featuring against Oakland. New Orleans incurred a dead cap penalty because they kept him on the week one roster.

We’re just recording this weeks podcast now and will touch on this, plus we have an early 2017 mock draft.

I feel like he is the type of third back that we need. Unfortunately pro keeps getting injured but hopefully spiller can come in and make some things happen for us on third downs. Also it will take some of the load off of Michael while Rawls is out.

  2. C-Dog

Definitely looks like they are wanting a 3rd down back, and perhaps not the greatest sign Prosise is going to be ready anytime soon.

  3. cha

That wheel route play vs Dallas was a thing of beauty. The Hawks like to feature that play a few times a year and he’d be a perfect fit for it.

  4. HawkFan907

Awesome pickup. He can end up being a difference maker on 3rd down. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Prosise put on IR now, giving him that redshirt year the Seahawks seem to do every so often.

I really have to question this move, imagine the utter chaos of two RB’s named CJ in the huddle. Shirley we cannot be serious.

    • The Hawk is Howling

He is seriously, and don’t call John Schneider Shirley! Ha ha

      Go Hawks!

      • The Hawk is Howling

Damn screwed that up. He is “Serious” not seriously. I believe it’s from the movie Airplane or one of that dude’s other flicks.

        • Volume12

‘You can call me Sure or you can call me Lee, but don’t call me surely.’ ?

          Classic movie.

          • The Hawk is Howling

I am serious, but don’t call me Shirley!

  6. The Hawk is Howling

The last time we got an ex Buffalo Bills Rb it worked out straight awesome possum! He’s got the talent for sure!

    Go Hawks!

    • Volume12

Don’t forgot about Freddy Jackson too.

Spiller also gives us a Punt/kick returner as well.

      • The Hawk is Howling

That’s true Vol you’re so on top of it M8!

        Go Hawks

      • Kenny Sloth

That was my first thought. They’re not gonna keep him off teams!

  7. Volume12

I like this move. Gives us an extra back that we’ve needed.

If Prosise gives us anything, it’ll be a bonus at this point.

Seattle will never have enough RB’s in their eyes.

I’m looking at the what positions the guys that Seattle brings in for tryouts play. Seems to me they were looking for a RB, check, CB, LB or EDGE. Almost every workout they’ve had this season are one of those positions, except for a couple WRs.

    • Volume12

      FB too.

      • The Hawk is Howling

Speaking of Full backs we released TrukaFool. Do we even have one, which if not would be strange?

        Go Hawks

        • CharlieTheUnicorn

Currently, no FB on the roster. However, in the last game they used a TE out of the FB spot on a few snaps…. I guess you could call it more an HB, than TE. I see Vennett fitting into this spot when he is 100%.

          • Attyla the Hawk

I mentioned that too at the time of drafting him. Vannett motioned into the HB/FB position quite frequently at OSU.

Him having dual role versatility is like adding an extra roster spot.

    • C-Dog

It’s pretty exciting to think about what he might be able to offer as an OW, returner, and a 3rd down back. Also, it looks like a signing of team that is in the hunt for a championship, and isn’t going to rest. They want proven talent at this stage. Maybe redshirt Prosise.

  8. The Hawk is Howling

Oh yeah, I remember wanting CJ Spiller the draft we got Earl Thomas 2010. Now we gotz them both, Word!

    Go MF Hawks!

  9. Frank

The Hawk is Howling did you really just drop a Airplane the movie quote? You are Shirley my hero for the day:). He is 29 but has speed to burn and plenty of experience to add to the RB film room. I am not too exited, but pleased overall to add a veteran pressance. Does Spiller return kicks? How is he in pass protection?

    • Volume12

      He does return kicks.

Prosise is rumored to still be 3 weeks away. And with Rawls out for just as long, if not longer, they definetly needed another back. This is a team that wants to carry at least 3 active RBs with 4 on the 53 man roster.

From what I remember he was adequate. Mark Ingram was the pass protection back in NO.

Spiller is another Seahawk that has battled injuries, worked his tail off to get back into football shape, and is a roll of the dice. Not as explosive as he once was, but still a dynamic playmaker.

      • Cameron

Prosise was listed on the injury report as ‘full participant’ so he should be ready. I honestly wonder if this move has nothing to do with Prosise, just a chance to add a good football player?

        • The Hawk is Howling

          I sure hope so Cameron!

          Go Hawks!

        • C-Dog

It was interesting that Pete talked today as if his injury could be still weeks away. I think I heard that right, anyways. I’d gladly take just a chance to add a good football player, though.

          • GeoffU

I think he can practice just fine, but isn’t ready to play / full contact. Also can’t catch, which takes away half his abilities.

        • Kenny Sloth

Not so much Prosise as it does Rawls. The Seahawks are so fortunate to realize Awakened Christine Michael. CMS?

They can lean on him and now they bring in veteran competition to challenge the rookies for those snaps.

What I suppose they assumed would be ACM’s role this year which he rapidly outgrew

      • The Hawk is Howling

Vol I just read that Germain Ifedi and Nick Vannett should be a go. Also CJ Prosise has a good chance to play as well!

I’m super stoked to see all those guys ball out!

        Go Hawks!

        • Volume12

I know Vannett is playing. Or at least based off his tweet it appears like it.

Ifedi was expected to play according to PC.

And this move might not have anything to do with Prosise. It was rumored he was 3 weeks away, so it could just be that.

It does kinda seem like Seattle has been or are looking for a RBs built like Spiller. They sign him, were interested in RB Lance Dunbar during FA, liked RB Tyler Ervin (at least spent a good amount time with him during his pro day), and drafted RB Zac Brooks. For me, that’s not coincidental.

          • CharlieTheUnicorn

I’ve notice Ervin on a few “not” highlight reel plays so far this season… and he has already had a bit of an injury issue. He has definitely had problems with ball control (fumbles) and making poor ST decisions… ie, running it out of the back of the end-zone and not making the 20. Maybe Seattle dodged a bullet.

Zac Brooks is also back on the PS, so they still like him.

            • Volume12

They might have. Whether they walked away from that pro day liking him or not is anyone’s guess at this point.

It just seems that Seattle may be going towards the stable of backs PC had at USC. Meaning, 4 different types of backs. I think they’ll always prefer their lead guys to be in their wheelhouse, that 5’9-5’10, 210-220 lb range. But, I’m not so sure their as rigid with those requirements like they are at CB and other positions.

    • The Hawk is Howling

Yep, evertime I hear someone say Shirley you can’t be serious I think of that line Frank. Glad I gave you a chuckle I like to make people smile or at least I try to.

You never know, CJ Spiller might resurrect his career with us? He’s definitely fast I know that much!

      Here’s to hoping?

      Go Hawks!

      • Volume12

Keep in mind that Prosise also has a cast on. Much different when getting live reps.

      • CharlieTheUnicorn

Also think about this….. there might be a package with both CJs on the field at the same time… both in the backfield…. then one can go out into a pass route and the other can rush the ball….. this would be very exciting.. almost a triple option kind of deal. This also reminds me of how the Patriots have a ton of guys able to make various plays from all over the field……

More weapons is a good thing… and after the bye week, watch out NFL!

  10. Kenny Sloth

Really like this pickup. Hope he trucks some fools.

    Thanks Bills, x2

  11. CharlieTheUnicorn

Here is why I like this move. You now can use him in KR/PR duties, to keep Lockett fresh and also keep the wear on tear down on his knee. You have more flexibility and options… and if you need to pop a big one, you can have Lockett return 2-3 a game, instead of everything.

Since we are talking ST, did anyone notice any major flub-ups by the LS this last game. I do not recall any low or inaccurate snaps to the kicker or punter. The ST overall appears to be on the rise, fewer missed tackles and some big time hits when they do tackle the guy.

How much money did we spend on CJ ? It is kind of strange why new orleans would randomly just release him, Any of you guys thinks there something negative we dont know about or are we just going to go with the “they needed cap room” story He wasnt even their feature back so its not like he was expensive for them, do we take on his salary from New Orleans now or do they pay him the rest of his money?

When we had Fred Jackson we signed him for a depth role correct? How often did we use him was he a 3rd down back all year for us? I dont remember him ever making a play or scoring a touchdown for us I guess thats why we resigned him but the reason I bring this up is what if CJ spiller is just going to be used as depth and we never even give him the ball just like when we have brought in other free agents that were considered special on offense we just never implemented them into the offense and this worries me not to to mention his whole NFL carrer has been plagued with injuries every team he has been on never got what they paid for he always gets hurt so some of you dont be surprised when he gets hurt for us. I just hope we dont waste this opportunity if we dont use him on punt return and kickoff return we will definitely be wasting him

    • EranUngar

Jackson did very little running for us but…

He was solid in pass protection, he had 32 catches for 256 yards and 2 TDS.

    • cha

The Saints absorbed $4.5m in dead money this year and $2.5m next year to cut Spiller. Ouch.

    • C-Dog

I think it was a weird situation down there for him. They got a BOAT LOAD of dead $ they are dealing with. I don’t think Seattle would have signed him for much, they don’t have much to spend.

Jackson was strictly a 3rd down back. I think Spiller probably gets looked at that role, but probably also depth. In NO, they kept Ingram in on 3rd downs, and I think Spiller was change of pace, and a fairly expensive one. My hunch is they weren’t playing him because they didn’t want to be on the hook for more $ in the event he got injured, kind of like what SF is likely doing with Kaper, and Washington did with RG3.

What does this mean for Seattle? We know Rawls is probably out for another month of more with a cracked bone in his leg, they probably don’t know what they really have with Prosise with, and Spiller can possibly offer some relief for both situations, depth at RB and a pass catching 3rd down back, in addition to being able to return if something were to happen injury wise with Lockett. In these ways, I think the signing makes a lot of sense.

  13. East Side Stevie

    why we didnt resign him***

  14. Steele

If the Spiller they get is prime Spiller, he will be yet another quick versatile utility back who should be very useful, especially on a depleted roster. Spiller, Prosise etc all come from that Reggie Bush style family tree that Pete loves.

The question is if Bevell is creative enough to make use of it.

    Bubble screens!

    • Rob Staton

      More Bevell negativity.

      Sooooo boring.
