Video thoughts on the Seahawks D-line

I will have a write-up on the Vikings pre-season game on the blog on Friday (it’s a 3am kick-off over here) and on Sunday we’ll do a live stream debating what we saw. Feel free to use this as an open thread to discuss the game.

In the meantime here’s a video fleshing out my thoughts on the Seahawks D-line and why Jadeveon Clowney would be a positive (albeit unlikely) addition:

“(Adams) and Jordyn are both doing a ton of stuff,” Carroll said. “They’re not held back at all, they’re not restricted. They’re doing full-speed workouts, direction changes and all that kind of stuff, turning and running full speed, and in long durations to try to really guarantee their conditioning before we put them out there. We’ve just got to do the right thing to make sure their confidence is there and we have logged enough time in the football movement stuff so that we know when they get back out there, it’s not going to be anything new to them. So we’re really going overboard to try to pull that together.”

English translation: they’re still not fully recovered and are far from in football shape. The recovery will continue and it will take months, maybe more, to get them in playing shape.

This team needs Austin Ekeler’s trainer.

      • Blitzy the Clown

        And Austin Powers’ tailor

        Oh behave!

        • Palatypus

Or Austin Butler’s from the Elvis movie.

          • Big Mike

Thank you, thank you verrah much.

            • Palatypus

Hey, who was it that wore that weird gold shorts-suit to the White House?

              Tharold Simon?

              • Tony

                Walter Thurmond?

                • Palatypus

I think you’re right. Imagine if Rob found THAT at a thrift store.

    • Canadian Hawk

      Cha you’re the Carroll whisperer.

    • Justaguy

Pete could twist any narrative into a dichotomy of short stories nobody would understand. How can anyone play for such a douche?

One rookie I don’t see in pads who may not have been mentioned as potentially not playing is Cameron Young. Noticed he hadn’t been practicing much lately but Carroll was not asked about him. So, not sure why he is out. But that may play into why they added an NT this week.

    • Kyle R

So no rookie nose tackle because he’s possibly injured. Our fifth overall CB has a second Achilles injury. And we our down at least 2 or 3 running backs if I remember right. Damn rookie class is down quite a bit already and they need the preseason more than the vets.

      • Big Mike

        Hamstring not Achilles.
But your point is well taken

        • Justaguy

          Can you prove that?

  4. KD

    Finally! Live football. Let’s Gooooooooo!

  5. Big Mike

Am I the only one with Women’s World Cup instead of Seahawks football on the channel that’s supposed to be showing Seahawks football?

    • Palatypus

At the least the Swedish team is easy on the eyes.

    • Bmseattle

Im getting the jets/browns instead of the seahawks.

    • Palatypus

I believe you can watch it free on YouTube as part of their NFL Sunday ticket promotion.

  6. Kyle R

Thanks for the clarification. My bad but yes I don’t like the trend already. Anybody else’s feed go out?!

    • Kyle R

      Reply fail to Big Mike

      • Big Mike

I finally got it but I missed the kick off and the apparent injury to Eskridge.
        FOX 12 PDX suuuucks!

        • Big Mike

I left less than pleasant messages without being a complete Dick they won’t care but I felt better

        • Kyle R

I’m on the home feed with King 5 in Seattle and I missed the same amount. Eskridge is hurt already?…..oh no that’s a shame…everyone take a shot

    Hello Mike Morris

    • Palatypus

      You had me at hello.

    • cha

Give it to Boye Mafe. he took two blockers on and pushed them back!

      The coaches won’t forget that.

  8. Big Mike

    Waste of good field position
    Relatively poor punk

    • Big Mike

      *punt

  9. cha

Evan Brown moves his man well out of the way and yet Deejay Dallas can’t see the cutback lane my grandmother could run through, just plows into the pile.

Please get better ASAP K9. You too McIntosh.

    • Big Mike

      You too Zach

      • cha

        He’s playing tonight.

        At least he’s in pads.

  10. Kyle R

I know this is the first preseason game but I see stopping the run is in mid season form.

    • cha

      Rhattigan flailing.

      • Kyle R

Interior LB and Dline depth is so razor thin.

  11. Blitzy the Clown

Coby Bryant is having himself some

    • Kyle R

Bryant is laying the wood and looking like he is taking the Safety role well.

  12. Big Mike

    Had him 😞

  13. Blitzy the Clown

Tre Brown dropped his head and missed the tackle

    • Palatypus

      Correctable.

  14. Palatypus

Yeah, that’s the Boye Mafe I saw at Senior Bowl practice.

  15. Big Mike

    Aaaaand tackling 😞

    • Palatypus

      That’s not tackling, that’s takkling.

  16. Kyle R

Wow King 5/NBC way to drop the ball on a the first game.

    • Palatypus

The key grip is a rookie.

  17. Big Mike

Did the vikings get a fg? I have the same issue again with all of a sudden a black screen and then Women’s World Cup soccer
Is that what happened to you Kyle?

    • Kyle R

Yeah it went black then we got commercials bright and clear then back to the technical difficulties screen again.

    • Blitzy the Clown

My NFL Network feed is all f’d up too

      • Big Mike

I’ve got a rerun of Jets versus Browns on NFLN

  19. Kyle R

  20. Big Mike

    SEA: 4:48
    🙁

  24. Big Mike

If Abe Lucas doesn’t miss seeing the block on that guy that made the tackle that play goes for huge yardage

  25. Blitzy the Clown

    Tyreke Smith!

  26. Big Mike

I hate going up third long
Seahawks blitz didn’t get there and that’s what happens if you don’t

  27. Big Mike

Spare me the “unfair” bullshit MRob.

  28. dand393

Boye Mafe only defender playing any kind of defense

  29. Kyle R

Even though I know the statistics don’t bare this out. It feels 3 and long for the Seahawks is like men on 2nd and 3rd for the Mariners and no one out. You just know it won’t end good.

  30. Big Mike

    💯

    • Big Mike

      This was meant for dand393

  31. Kyle R

And of course fucking technical difficulties again!

  32. Big Mike

Aaaaand we have women’s soccer again
    Good Lord

    • Ben

      The ads still work okay…

      • Big Mike

        Of course they do
My friend’s brother who is a huge seahawk fan is up in British Columbia and hes getting women’s soccer too. This is obviously a national feed problem

      • Kyle R

Guess they still want to cash the ad revenue checks.

    • Palatypus

All I’m getting is thw Playboy channel.

      • Kyle R

You’re still getting less penetration than the Vikings are getting on the Hawks Defense.

        • Palatypus

          Post of the day.

          • Kyle R

It was low hanging fruit but I took the dump off pass.

        • Big Mike

          *rimshot*

          Brilliant 👏

  33. Big Mike

And we’re back just in time to see that The Vikings went 80 yd in 11 plays ate up another 5 and a 1/2 minutes off the clock and now lead ten to nothing
Looks like the defense hasn’t changed a whole lot

    • TomLPDX

But we got to see NED score a goal…so there you go!

      • Big Mike

Come on Robinson how about they actually run the football effectively

    • Kyle R

Seeing as we haven’t seen the actual scoring play on either of them for the Vikings I choose to believe it’s still 0-0

      • Palatypus

This is where the ostrich meets the groundhog.

  34. HOUSE

Tre Brown getting tested… Blown tackle on a 3rd down and then giving up a TD.

    • Big Mike

Well didn’t we draft corner with the fifth overall pick in the draft this last April?

      • Kyle R

Who (I know it’s early) went to the school of CJ Prosise/Dee Eskridge health so far.

        • Big Mike

It is early but so far you are not wrong

  35. ShowMeYourHawk

JSN is going to get murdered out there tonight. He’s the only one doing anything in offense. Taking a lot of tackles so far…

  36. Big Mike

Missed more plays in favor of commercials

    • Big Mike

Utterly and completely amateur broadcast tonight

      • Palatypus

You watching the Playboy channel too?

        • Big Mike

          I said “amateur”

          • Albert Bryan Butler

            Takcling?

  37. Kyle R

There we go that’s a run I want to see.

  38. Edgar

Every year I get roped into the first pre season game….and I always turn it off mid 1st quarter, hit record on the dvr, and go do something else

    • TomLPDX

      Smart!

  39. Big Mike

    Back to women’s soccer
    Where utterly being clowned here
    I’m done
Maybe there’ll be a replay at some point somewhere like NFL network

    • TomLPDX

Aaaaaand, we got see a reply of the NED score from 15 minutes ago.

  40. Palatypus

Wait a minute. He didn’t Coug it?

  41. Mick

Great timing to wake up, touchdown.

  42. TomLPDX

So we scored sometime between the soccer match. Who and what?

    • MaxInVan

Lock to Easop Winston Jr. Made a nice catch in traffic while being a victim of PI

      • TomLPDX

        Thanks Max

    • AlaskaHawk

Bobo had a good catch somewhere in that drive. Before my tv went black and I missed the TD.

      • Kyle R

I noticed that too. I’m really pulling for him to take over the 4th WR spot.

    • Romeo A57

I am also having trouble watching this game. The “Fox Viewing Position” is not working. The dog is cooperating but the 4 year old keeps moving around.

  43. Olyhawksfan

Can the Seahawks play six pre-season games? I think they need it.

    • Olyhawksfan

Hey they scored! Maybe only five.

    • Romeo A57

They were really awful last preseason also and the team turned out decent. The bad tackling is a bit concerning though.

  44. Palatypus

    “Shar-bo-nay”

    Is that a wine?

  45. cha

    Brady Henderson
    @BradyHenderson
Scary scene at Lumen Field. A Seahawks player who I couldn’t identify with certainty was taken off the field on a stretcher, with his neck stabilized. That was after being looked at for 20 or so minutes in the medical tent. Tyler Lockett visited him, as did WR coach Sanjay Lal.

Might be Cade Johnson. Hope they’re just being extra careful.

Seahawks radio reporting that it was receiver Cade Johnson who was carted off the field at halftime. Waiting to get some official word on the injury.

      • Kyle R

Sure we get caught up with everything on the field but damn I hate seeing injuries anytime but especially preseason.

Cade Johnson is being transported to Harborview Medical Center as a precaution for head and neck injuries. He’s in stable condition.

        Prayers are up for him.

  46. Kyle R

I’m liking all this mix and match running and passing with the running back on these last few plays

  47. Kyle R

Bradford just took a man’s soul on that block.

    • Justaguy

      Can he play nose tackle?

      • AlaskaHawk

Not a bad idea, LOL. Lets get some use out of him this year.

  48. Justaguy

Zero sacks sounds about right. This team lacks any depth on defense

  49. AlaskaHawk

Let us be thankful we finally get to see Lock play a whole game. I’m strangely excited to see football again!

    • cha

He’s been very good this game.

Taken a step forward. A very healthy one.

  50. Kyle R

First preseason over reaction hot take. Bobo and Winston Jr are 4 and 5 on the WR depth chart at the start of the year.

    • AlaskaHawk

Agreed, a receiver in hand is worth 5 on suspension. har har.

  51. Romeo A57

I agree with that overreaction. Hopefully this is last game we see Dee Eskridge is healthy and never in a Seahawks uniform again.

  52. Kyle R

Not to mention you can never trust his health.

  53. Kyle R

Meant to be a reply to AlaskaHawk

  54. AlaskaHawk

My gut feeling is that the offense will be better than the defense this season. No big revelation there! lol

  55. Thomas

I think Bobo is making the team. I think he’s more than just a pre-season flash.

  56. Mick

That’s a way to start, fumble on first play, 30 yds touchdown on last. Good job Ahlers.

    • MaxInVan

He is fun. Give him a practice roster spot

      • Rushless pass

Don’t have to give him a practice squad spot. Every team get 3 quarterbacks now

  57. Kyle R

Yeah the offense will carry this team. Let’s just hope the defense can be middling and not a total anchor like last year.

  58. AlaskaHawk

Maybe the most fun from these preseason games is seeing the players who are just trying to make the team, or any team. Watching them getting their chance to play. A third string QB throwing to a receiver I’ve never heard of and it’s a success!

  59. Malc from PO

Vikings number 16 needs to go work in a shop or something. He’s got no idea what he’s doing out there.

    • Malc from PO

That’s Jaren Hall, former BYU. Well it’s his first taste of NFL action I suppose but that didn’t suggest he can amount to much. Quote this back at me in 5 years when he wins his third Super Bowl, I guess.

  60. cha

    Jordan Ferguson has some chops!

    • Blitzy the Clown

Levi Bell and Christian Young looked good too

  61. KD

If nothing else, one big positive takeaway from this game is seeing the young guys noticing, reacting and taking advantage of opportunities when they present themselves.

    • KD

I’m also liking the enthusiasm that I’m seeing

  62. Seattle Person

My biggest take away from this game was the defensive line run fits went away from the Fangio principles. They didn’t do very much mirroring on the line. There were moments where you saw LBs meeting RBs in the hole. That’s encouraging. We’ll have to see what it looks like with the first team plays and the season starts.

  63. cha

    Liked:

-drew lock. Very good performance. Calm, in command and accurate. Used his athleticism and arm at appropriate times. Big confidence boost.
-Mafe and Hall. There’s the future right there. Bookend pass rushers to go with bookend offensive tackles. Mafe is showing his ability in real games now.
-JSN. He’s going to dazzle. Soon.
-the centers. Both had no major blown plays and both seemed competent. Olu had a couple plays firing off the snap I really liked.
-bottom roster guys. Bobo, Easop and Jordan Ferguson all put good things on tape. Robert Cooper too.
-Bradford looked very solid. Tell me why he hasn’t been able to get up with the ones?

    What I didn’t like:

-first half defense. Gaps not maintained. Assignments behind the LOS vacated. Poor tackling. What is this, 2022???
-John Rhattigan is the new Cody Barton. The textbook definition of a replacement level player. Collects meaningless tackles in bunches and cannot make plays when called upon. Getting duped by a big particularly fast QB in the flat was embarrassing
-Tre Brown had a bad missed tackle and was out of position on the TD throw.

    • LouCityHawk

      Agree with all.

Morris had a lot to like.
Char looked really good running and receiving.
Bryant was not bad, had some good plays.
      Park was encouraging.

I need to watch Bush again to see what was up

Brown really had a rough outing.
      Backup tackles played on skates.

      • Sten

Bush looked fast like a DB out there. It might have been his number messing with my head, but he was seriously flying around. What a steal if he ends up being good.

Also noticed in the 2nd half they were running behind Bradford on every play, and he was making big holes. Not amazing at pass pro, but the man finishes every block even if he gets beat off the line

    • Mick

Brown looked bad both on the TD and on the play before, he lost his assignment.

Am I the only one to see a bit of Kearse in Jake Bobo?

      • Rob Staton

I think he could be better than Kearse

      • cha

        I see Joe Jurevicius

    • BK26

My takeaway (from only watching highlights) is….do we finally have some depth? At least athletically? From the highlights (which are obviously the best plays), towards the end it looked like we were clearly more athletic all over and it was really getting to Minnesota. Could also be Hall crumbling too. Kind of reminds me of the early 2010’s: might not be the best overall, but damn that raw talent.

I’m going to be watching Lock closely. I’m a little worried about how they view the position overall. But he made some throws.

The announcers are going to give me headaches with Jake Bobo, thinking that they are being cute or quirky. I’m just going to call him “the Muffin Man” because I’d rather hear the Gingerbread man from Shrek yell that over and over than “Bobo! Uh-oh it’s BOBO!!!”

I really want to watch the full game. Glad to have football back, even if it is just preseason.

      THE MUFFIN MAN!!

      • Rushless pass

Are we talking Drury lane or Utility Muffin Research Kitchen muffin man?

        • Bk

Oh, Drury Lane. Idk why, but watching the td on Instagram, that was my thought!

  64. L80

Zach Charbonnet absolutely trucked Cine not once nut TWICE. Stole his soul…LOL
