All the right salary moves being made by the Hawks so far. This needed to happen and I couldn’t be more excited to see what’s next!

  2. JJ

Any word yet on Tyler’s cap number this year?

    • Rob Staton

      Not yet

    • Charlie TheUnicorn2187

      According to ESPN

Lockett had two years and a nonguaranteed $34 million remaining on his 2021 extension, which called for him to make $17 million in both 2024 and 2025. His new deal is for two years and a base value of $30 million, with an additional $4 million available in incentives and nearly $13 million guaranteed for this coming season

  3. Ian Heathrow

    Can’t wait, guys!

  4. Charlie TheUnicorn2187

Rob, hope you can touch on some of the other deals being reported about in the run up to FA. There are some questionable moves already being made…. fortunately Seattle has not come up in the conversation yet.

  5. Roy Batty

The Bucs finally signed Mayfield for $100 mil over 3 years. Now all the rumors about the Pats and whomever else can stop.

  6. HOUSE

Anyone know much about Rayshawn Jenkins? Looks like he’s heading to Seattle for a visit. Could be the type of “prove it” contract at the Safety position

    • Julian

I’d rather they looked at younger players in the safety position, at this stage of Free Agency. Rayshawn Jenkins is over 30.

  7. Julian

As someone pointed out on twitter, creating the Cap Space is likely the easy part, recruiting the right players to to fill the space is harder.

    • Roy Batty

I think MacDonald is the key.

      And money.

  8. Henry Taylor

Just getting this in before the stream starts, I spent some time watching Drake Maye (hadn’t really bothered as I’d always assumed he wouldn’t be an option). And like, I knew Rob is lower on him and I saw Chris Simms had him at QB6 (who has lost his shine a little on the position).

But man, he’s just not that good. Spraying balls all over the place. And yeah he’s got tools, but not like AR or Levis last year. The player I can’t get out of my head is stronger arm Daniel Jones, wouldn’t be surprised if he did fall.

    • Dregur

      Or…Mitch Trubisky?

    • Ben Fort Worth

Drake Maye will be a Top 3 pick this draft, bank on it!

  9. Sea Mode

Continues to go perfectly so far

All-Pro and Pro Bowl LB Bobby Wagner is expected to test the market, and it’s currently viewed as unlikely that he returns to the #Seahawks, source said. Coming off a career-high 183 tackles, Wagner joins a talented off-the-ball LB group in free agency.

  10. Big Mike

Thank you Bobby you are indeed a first ballot lock in my opinion. That said you’ve lost a step it’s time to hang em up.

  11. Ben

    Great conversation throughout!

    Re: The ongoing Bowers conversation-

If Bowers is considered BPA at 16, I think he fits in the group just fine. In 2025, he could conceivably be the #2 target. At worst being a great 3rd target as TE, allowing us to stay in a 2-WR set more often if that’s what Grubb is looking for.

Lockett is likely not on the team next year. DK should be here long term, but his contract situation looms, and having a clear #2 option would give the team some leverage.

    • Ty the Guy

Bowers is rare. Smart move is to just shut up and stash blue chippers on the roster.

JS should hedge on most if not all of S, LB, DL, IOL, and TE. Excited to see the value gems that may be available after first few days Make your run on Big Cat or if not, maybe a Robert Hunt? Then he just needs to let the draft come to him.

If a blue chip player falls to you, great. If not grab picks and take the solid bites of the apple.

    • DJ 1/2 way

Yes, based on Robs horizontal board, you take Bowers if he drops, but it all depends on the offense. If the difference between Westover and Bowers is insignificant in the new Seahawks offense- then you do something else. Somebody is going to want to trade up to get Bowers or you stick and pick a better fit-likely in the trenches.

The Mock draft on The Ringer is beautifully laid out with lots of info-but flawed in the order from the perspective of SDB. They have both Bowers and Chop Robinson available for pick 16. Who would you take?

    • Seattle Person

The thing about Bowers is that long term, it might be a benefit that he comes into the league as a TE and then stays a TE. Let’s say we let D.K walk after his contract and then have JSN up for his 2nd contract. Let’s also assume the WR market continues the way it does and the TE market also continues the way it is.

By then, Bowers might be your offensive weapon #1 à la Travis Kelce. It might save you a pretty substantial amount of money. You’ll probably have to pay a WR in JSN and then a TE in Bowers. Pretty big difference not having to pay 2 top WRs assuming all markets stay relatively the same.

      • Peter

If I had to guess in two years the WR market will crater. Hard to see a world where up to 20 talented players at a position are entering the draft and them all getting big bucks in 3-5 years.

Look no further than last year. From JSN to Puka and a ton of playersin between.

  12. DJ 1/2 way

I love the QB talk. I just can’t seem to get enough. I like the balance between the two perspectives with both of you. I am falling on the side of Robbie on JJ McCarthy. I think it will be more likely to prepare Penix for an NFL pass rush than to have JJ throw bombs into tight windows.

JJ gives me Baker Mayfield vibes. If he is good in the NFL I think it is in 3-4 years and he is on a good team like early Russ. He might have Mahomes like savy and shuffle passes, but it will take more than that to win in the playoffs, and that is all we care about.

A lot will depend on pro days. If JJ kills it he likely goes top 5. I bet Maye does very little in an effort to not fall.

    • Roy Batty

On Maye, I think he does the opposite on his pro day. He will be in his comfort zone at his college practice facility with his own receivers and coaches. The more he can showcase, the better his chances of remaining a high pick. They will select drills that showcase his best traits.

If he does very little, that would be a massive red flag to any GM, coach or scout.

  13. Blitzy the Clown

    Jordan Schultz @Schultz_Report

Sources to @BleacherReport: #49ers star DL Arik Armstead has decided to become a free agent and will be released.

Armstead comes off a 6 tackle, 1-sack performance in the Super Bowl, and ranks 4th in playoff sacks among all active players.

His 8 playoff sacks rank second all-time in franchise history.

    • HOUSE

Beat to posting it. I’d say a bit surprising and maybe a backup option to re-signing Leonard Williams

    • cha

The Seahawks have options it appears.

      • HOUSE

Agreed Curtis. I think Leonard Williams has options, but us having options as well can prevent us from overpaying for Williams and/or outbidding ourselves in missing out on LW

  14. geoff u

Off-season coaching hires have been a solid A. Off-season cuts/extensions have been a solid A. Let’s keep it going into FA. Liking the approach so far. I also want to stay away from big FA additions and would prefer to roll any extra cap into next year.

  15. PatrickH

According to Adam Schefter, Russell Wilson to sign with Steelers.

    • Seattle Person

Mike Tomlin has a lot of Pete Carroll in him…

  16. HOUSE

    Russell Wilson signing with Steelers…

    • HOUSE

Reports are indicating he’s signing a “team friendly deal” where PIT is only paying him $1.2M and DEN is on the hook for $38M.

I wish him the best. PIT looks to have an upgrade over Pickett, Rudolph and Trubisky

      • STTBM

I hope Russ plays great. I hope the Stealers go down in flames brutally, every year for eternity…

Fuck the Stealers, their fans, and all the staff and players except Russ. That’s how I feel about Shitsburgh.

        • Seattle Person

          Eh…

They haven’t won a playoff game since 2016. Their situation smells like something we just got out of…

          • Roy Batty

And don’t the Steelers have a worse Oline than the Broncos?

        • Big Mike

Could not agree more STBBM. Hate the franchise and no, I’ll NEVER get over XL* cuz Dan Rooney was the REAL commish at the time and he arranged the whole sham. Fuck them forever. I would love it if they went 0-17 every year until there were 18 games and then they can go 0-18 for eternity. That said, I do hope Russ does well there.

          • Big Mike

            *STTBM (sorry)

            • OakleyD

That OPR on Darrell Jackson and holding call on Locklear will live with me forever!

              • Big Mike

I will go to my grave KNOWING that despite all the cheating calls for the stealers, if that holding isn’t called the Hawks win….Sean A. scores to put us up by 3, stealers tie with a FG we win at the end with a FG.
Of course that assumes no more cheating for the stealers and I suppose that’s just a fantasy.

              • Group Captain Mandrake

And we are all still waiting for Big Ben to actually cross the goal line.

          • Chris 206

Same here. In my mind the Carroll superbowl win will always be our 2nd. Don’t know if the refs were bought off in the Stealer game, but they certainly reffed it in a way that was indistinguishable from a bought off crew. I rarely, if ever, complain about officiating, but that game was simply too blatant to ignore.

  17. GoldenHawk

For what it’s worth, DraftKings has the Seahawks as the most likely team to draft Michael Penix at +330. Also have the Seahawks at +1200 to draft McCarthy, +1800 Bo Nix, and +5000 for Jayden Daniels.

Strangely no odds posted for any team for Drake Maye. I guess that might reflect that his draft position is EXTREMELY volatile.

    https://sportsbook.draftkings.com/leagues/football/nfl?category=2024-draft&subcategory=player-drafted-by

    • Seattle Person

I think it’s a pretty high chance the Seahawks trade up to try to get Penix.

      • Peter

Hope not. Feels like that is unnecessary.

        • BK26

Yeah that’s pretty deflating if it happens.

        • Seattle Person

It’s not crazy though. If McCarthy can have top 10 or top 5 buzz then it’s not crazy to think Penix can’t have top 15 or top 12 buzz.

We’ll see what happens. Can’t say it is necessary or not. Sometimes it’s the flow of the draft.

          • Peter

Penix doesn’t have buzz right now.

Maybe he picks it up but seems unlikely. Wisdom of the masses and all that….but pretty much “here,” which is wherever the Hawks/huskies converge on a Venn diagram is Penix a stick and pick or move up type player.

I’m not sure what he’s going to do at his pro day that generates any buzz. Run a sub 4.5 40yrd? Really jump 38″?

Because he had a pretty good combine. He did the work, checked the boxes, and still all over he’s a late first early 2nd.

            • BK26

Anymore, if you aren’t Josh Allening your offseason (I almost said “or pulling a Trey Lance, but he was still drafted 3rd overall), then your combine and pro day tells me nothing.

Even with Richardson last year, didn’t move the needle for me because I already knew what I saw. I think that if you get swayed (fans and media, teams are probably already set) by these glorified workouts, then you are getting talked into it.

This is of course barring stuff that we don’t get to see, like meetings, interviews, play dissection.

Penix, I think has fitted into opinions. He’s had more years, more tape, nothing new has happened to sway anything (the playoffs were overreactions/people that were watching him for the first time).

          • Roy Batty

I wouldn’t be surprised if Vegas picked Penix.

            • Peter

Maybe. I think he will be a first round pick. More often I see him around pick #26 as a team moves back into round one.

I’ve looked briefly at Raiders chatter and previously at Steelers chatter as landing spots and haven’t seen much talk of him from their fans.

He has real things holding him back.

-age…..I draft thing I don’t pay much attention too but teams do.
              – Injury history….clear medicals are fine but he needed six seasons total to overcome four straight of severe injuries.
-and the one I firmly do not get. Mccarthy played on “such a talented team” that his skills are unknown but Penix had all those weapons as if it’s a negative for him.

              • BK26

You mean teams aren’t weighing the same factors evenly with two guys?

I knock Penix for it, so I knock McCarthy for it. Between the two, one was able to be a giant factor in that offense, the other….how often do you forget that he is a part of it? Once excelled with top offensive talent. The other, he talks really well and (checks notes) fires his teammates up…

                • Peter

                  I judge them both.

But draft wise it appears one is a mystery wrapped in a riddle covered with secret sauce.

And the other is getting the….yeah but….look at that line and recievers treatment.

Penixis a good dude with good vibes but if you were a never was football player turned GM which player do you think you’d hang out with on the “quad,” and more likely give you a cool nick name?

    • Rob Staton

      Interesting

    • Danimal

This is more reflective of betting markets than what Vegas “thinks” will happen, right? All of the money is coming in on Penix>Seattle, so Vegas hedges losses by lowering the payout to get more money on him going somewhere else. Unless I’m mistaken on how these books work.

      • GoldenHawk

Yes, you’re right this is probably more reflective on where people have bet money rather than Vegas doing some deep dive research and coming up with the “exact numbers.”

As a non expert on this, I think “Vegas” does a little bit of initial research, puts out a number, and then adjusts it based on what people bet on.

All that said – I think these betting markets are generally sharper than any random NFL reporter’s prediction.

  18. Charlie TheUnicorn2187

    ooooooooo

Wilson has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers, ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported on Sunday evening. He is signing with the Steelers for the league minimum of $1.21 million, according to multiple reports.

Sadly, no game between Seahawks and Stealers in 2024.

    • PatrickH

Steelers do play the Broncos in 2024.

      • Ian Heathrow

In Denver! Watch it be the season opening MNF game.

        • Big Mike

          Highly likely

    • Peter

      Sadly…..?

I for one am grateful to not have the steelers on the schedule so i don’t have to watch my team get it’s teeth kicked in as “locker room leader” Diggs waves players into the endzone.

      • Peter

That time we acted like we won the superbowl winning by one point against a soon to be 5-12 team at our house….

Just one more move to be done and dusted with that whole era and I can not wait.

    • Whidbey Tom

At least the Steelers are now unlikely to compete for drafting a QB. Too bad Wilson isn’t going to the Raiders or another team ahead of us in the draft.

  19. samprassultanofswat

Rob: You need to get an interview with Scot McCloughan. I would love to know what McCloughan has to say about this QB.

  20. samprassultanofswat

Rob: I agree with you. It’s looking more and more like JS is planning on filling his needs in free agency. So that he move up to take a QB. Like I just mention. I would love to know what Scot McCloughan thinks of this QB class.

I think you can get a lot of good(not great) players at a decent value.

As long as you break the bank and over pay someone. Let the free agency come to you.

  21. samprassultanofswat

As long as you DON’T break the bank and over pay someone. Let the free agency come to you.

  22. Ian Heathrow

This was a fantastic conversation. Thanks Rob/bie!!

As for the Bowers debate, I tend to side with Rob. I fear it would be too much of a luxury given the sort of offense I think we will be running. You likely won’t get as much out of him as the draft slotting warrants. One could argue that JSN was a luxury pick last year. But at least you can see him as Lockett’s successor and much needed going forward.

  23. Old but Slow

Early in the talk, Rob talks of the importance of QB and edge rusher. So, if there is a good pass rusher (Verse) at 16 I think it would be a good pick. I love watching Bower’s tape, and love him, but a chance to upgrade the rush should be a priority.

Trading back to later in the first would be my first choice, but I would stick and pick for Verse, Chop, or Penix. With Penix and his arm I am reminded of the old saw to focus on what he can do rather than what he can not.

    • Rob Staton

Verse will almost certainly not last to 16

  24. MarkinSeattle

The two guys I have been pushing for since early in the season are Cam Hart and Peyton Wilson. I was hoping that Cam Hart would continue to slip under the radar and we could pick him up in the 4th. However Nagy is raving about him, so I doubt he lasts that long.

    https://twitter.com/JimNagy_SB/status/1766828118977782139

  25. Julian

A lot of comments read, my preference is to trade down except if this or that player is there at #16. If you have a long list of players at #16 that include, Bowers, Penix, Robinson, Fuaga, Fautanu, Latham, Verse, Maye and others, you’re not going to be trading down, one of these players IS going to be there.

The reason we need to be honest about it, is because it means the Seahawks need to recruit a player in free agency, who would be equal to that value of a 2nd round pick, to fill that space on the roster. Hopefully it’ll be Leonard Williams, as the Seahawks need another top Defensive Tackle, that’s why they traded for him in the first place, due to lack of depth and ability in that position. At least now, if Williams over reaches with his salary demands, a 2 or 3 year contract offer for Arik Armstead could be a viable, quality alternative.

    • OakleyD

The good thing about this situation is that as a result, there will very likely be a market to trade down in.

If you have a similar group of talent you have 1st round grades on in that 20-32 range and you can pick up more draft capital, then maybe that benefit outweighs the benefit of 1 x blue chip player that isn’t a QB or Pass Rusher.

      Really interesting topic

  26. Julian

If the draft isn’t falling in Seattles favour regards drafting a QB they really want, a pivot at #16 could be to draft a player they think could replace a future trade piece in another draft one or two years ahead? Still wortht drafting a QB like Rattler IF he’s still there in the 3rd. Rattler himself, would be a fine back up to another rookie QB drafted in 2025 or 2026, if at that point the Seahawks need to continue pushing the envelope in the QB position.

So why not draft Brian Thomas Jr or Amarius Mims, with a view to using DK or Charles Cross as that trading trading piece in 2025? For me, certainly if the team trades down at #16 this year, they have to draft a WR or OT in the early rounds, because they’ll need the trade capital in the years to come, to get up for the QB they need.

I don’t anticipate the Seahawks being anything but a Playoff contender under Schneider and MacDonald, so if things don’t work out in the draft for a top QB this year, they need to keep in mind, how they can get up into the top 5 in the years ahead.

    • Rob Staton

So draft players you don’t need on the off chance you can trade away players you hope succeed enough to have a market? That is a very bizarre plan I have to say

      • Julian

😂 It’s all about the QB Rob. I don’t know who Schneider might target, he might very well not be so confident to mortgage future drafts on any of these prospects or find a trade to be in a position to do so.

So what scenario in future years, would give Seattle a better chance of trading up to get a QB? Having Trade capital in players as well as picks. That can be planned for.

This is a period of renewal for the team. Schneider will have to be pretty damn sure, that ok, he won’t have any early round picks with a new coaching group to work with for the next few years, but he’s found the guy who he’s going to give it all up for?! This QB project might take more than one off season?

        • Rob Staton

          I get all this

It’s just this plan makes no sense

  27. Andy J

    Just thinking out loud…

    FREE AGENCY NEEDS:
    1-2 TEs
    1 OL
    1 DT
    1-2 LB
    1 S

  28. ukalex6674

I’m happy if they make a splash at the start of FA.

Except it it’s Geno Stone. That is one dude who may get seriously overpaid.

  29. ukalex6674

    Wilson to the Steelers?

    New catch phrase incoming…..

    LET’S WELD!

    • Palatypus

      Let’s scrap.

    • Thor

      “Let’s steal!”

  30. McZ

Yeah, don’t overpay… if you are in the position to do so.

Positions with no players on the Seahawks roster:
    – TE
    – LB
Positions aplenty on the Seahawks roster:
    – WR
    – CB
    – RB
Positions with a dearth in FA and draft:
    – TE
    – LB
    Positions aplenty in draft:
    – WR
    – CB
    Positions aplenty in FA:
    – RB

This smells like a lot of potential for overpay in FA. The magic of Seahawks team construction.

If you want to build a team like Baltimore, you have ot manage the roster in a way that you can take the BPA without creating gaps.

  31. Shibu

Not that I would be a huge fan of the move, but any chance we try to sign Chase Young as a reclamation project and see if Macdonald can’t unlock a bit of that potential that made him a high pick? Or is he still going to be too expensive for what he might offer?

  32. Schadyhawk001

Something I’ve noticed among many Seahawks fans in various venues including the comments of this blog is the idea that if we don’t draft a QB in the first then no worries we will just draft Rattler in the 3rd, however there are 31 other franchises and many other teams fans are saying the same thing about taking Rattler. It’s been the echoed among so many fans that we need to take OL up in the first and Rattler will satisfy our QB need – “easy peasy”. If I gave odds on the chance that Rattler is there at pick 78 I would say it is closer to 30%. What I think Rob has done well is show the other side of the argument that if you love a QB and have the ability to trade up to guarantee it and get “your guy”, than you go do it instead of putting all your chips in the Rattler basket and potentially miss out on your QBOTF for another year.

    • Cysco

I’ve been thinking that a “trade up” scenario doesn’t have to mean moving up from 16 and giving up a haul. It can also mean trading back up to the bottom of the first or top of the second round.

There’s a world where you draft at 16, then give up a future 1st and one of the thirds this year to a team like Detroit for their first round pick. If Rattler is the target or if one of the other QBs goes on a Levis type fall, this could be a viable approach.

    • geoff u

I’m not sure Rattler makes it past the Rams. In any case, I expect him to go in the 2nd round/to 3rd. I think Seattle will have to trade up to get him. I could also be completely wrong of course.

    • Gritty Hawk

Have to agree with this. QBs will always be overdrafted because of the positional value. I would be very surprised if a player as talented as Rattler lasts to 78. I would rate Rattler as significantly better than any of the other QBs taken in that range in the last few years:

      – Hendon Hooker (68)
      – Desmond Ridder (74)
      – Malik Wills (86)
      – Matt Corral (94)
      – Kyle Trask (64)
      – Kellen Mond (66)
      – Davis Mills (67)
      – Will Grier (100)
      – Mason Rudolph (76)

If I had to guess, I think Rattler will be taken somewhere between Will Levis (33) and Hendon Hooker (68).

  33. Roy Batty

That Leonard Williams countdown clock is getting louder and louder.

I can’t imagine he didn’t tell the Hawks the same thing Armistead told the Niners. With the recent massive deals signed by DT’s, they should get a good pay bump by hitting FA.

  34. dand393

Hey Rob and Robbie I just wanted to say it was nice to see you guys go back and forth on Bowers, having a mature, normal conversation looking at the positives and negatives which allowed me to come to my own conclusions on how I would feel if he were available at 16

    • Blitzy the Clown

      +1

I’m back and forth on Bowers. Can’t ignore his talent and potential. But it seems like a wasted luxury pick for a team loaded with offensive weapons, big holes to fill elsewhere, and a troubling history of mis/under using their TEs.

      • ukalex6674

        But it’s just that- history.

You can’t say because PC didn’t use TE correctly that we shouldn’t pick one.

It’s a new page on the play book.

        • Blitzy the Clown

I don’t disagree with that point. But of the 3 arguments against drafting Bowers at 16, that’s the weakest.

Are there enough touches on offense to justify a R1 pick on WR and TE in back to back drafts when you already have a R1 caliber WR in Metcalf? I know you can never have enough weapons. But when you already have Benelli shotguns in your rack, a good old Remington will give you just as much bang for your buck.

And what of LB, S, OG, and DL? Will Bowers add enough to compensate for those unfilled holes?

        • SeattleLifer

I think part of the problem is we don’t have a/our long term QB. Most QB’s have strengths and weaknesses to which areas/routes on the field that they throw to. Some are better at hitting TE’s up the middle on seam routes, over the middle on crossing routes etc. It would be a risk to invest in a high pick, high ceiling receiving TE when you may end up with a QB who does’nt excel at feeding the ball to that player.

      • BK26

That’s where I’m at. Would be nice, but other picks would be better for the team. He’s a perfectly fine blocker. You aren’t drafting him for that, though. You’re drafting a receiving option, something that we might be the deepest part of the team.

But you can find a tight end later on. Literally just draft someone from Iowa (not quite Alt this year, but Lachey next year will be right with the rest of them).

        • Patrick Toler

IMO just draft the best player. If you think Bowers is a star, and your alternative is to take a good tackle or edge, draft the star. They are too hard to obtain through any other means.

          • BK26

Personally, I’d rather have the good player than a 4th receiver.

But I get the flip side. If they draft him, I’ll be extremely excited to get him. And to dream of who we draft next year to throw to him.

            • Patrick Toler

If he’s a blue chip, then in years 2-3 (when we are hopefully building into a contender) you got a difference maker. At that point Lockett is likely gone and he could be a core piece to build around, as opposed to a good player at another position.

I’m pretty sure he will be gone anyway. But give me the best possible player 10 out of 10 times and figure out how to build around them.

      • geoff u

As ukalex6674 said, I wouldn’t pay any attention at all to history anymore. It’s all new coaches and schemes.

    • Denver Hawker

I’m quite at peace with the unlikely scenario of Bowers available at 16.

Win: we draft a blue chip potential x-factor that other teams need to account for a critical position for a young QB

Win: another team desires what I just wrote and trades a boat load of picks

Only reason I can see it being a Lose is if one of Fuaga or Fataunu are on the board also which is just as unlikely.

    I predict the Seahawks will:
*Not sign Patrick Queen or Madubuike.
    *Not sign Leonard Williams.
*Seek to obtain a 3rd or 4th round compensatory pick for Leonard Williams by focusing on free agents who were cut by their teams and don’t count against the formula (offsetting other free agent losses with similar players pickups, but not Williams’).
*Sit out the first free agent wave when it comes to players who were not cut by their previous teams.
*Sign a good safety for $6-8 million per year.
*Sign a pass rusher who was cut by another team
*Sign an inexpensive LB like Kenneth Murray later in free agency to become a reclamation project like Queen.
*Fill out the roster in the third round of free agency
*Add a large DT after June 1 or late in the summer.

    • Rob Staton

Given Madubuike signed a massive extension in Baltimore, that prediction has a good chance of coming true!

Re: Edge Rushers, I’m not totally against adding someone, and I’m saying that as a big believer in Derick Hall

This is partly because I would explore the trade market for Nwosu (great player, but this team isn’t competing this year), partly because the draft is an abyss this year, and partly because there is value in having depth at the position.

I’m now trying to be cap conscious, although this can be hard – see the Simpson discussion.

Names that I’m interested in are DJ Wonnum (no proj), A.J. Epenesa (2/5per), Yetur Gross-Matos (no proj.). All hold more value than Taylor.

The ultimate answer is what Rob and Robbie said, let the market come to you, be patient, be sure you are covered with some solid and cheap veterans.

    • BK26

I’m all for bringing in Epenesa (surprise, surprise). Didn’t like how the Bills used him.

Can we take a minute to acknowledge what a great gambler Kirk Cousins is? He consistently bets on himself, either going for tags or testing the free market…he is a serviceable QB, but the amount of money he has made during his career vs his actual performance is quite remarkable. Kudos to him (in an honestly non-sarcastic way)

    • Troy

I mean he is a top 8-10 qb pretty inarguably. He has played things well but let’s not pretend he’s an average or below average qb, he’s solidly in top 1/3 of NFL qbs.

      • Peter

Kirk has made a ton of cash.

        Kirk sometimes plays fantastic.

Kirk is the poster child of why top 3rd qb or 8th-10th ranked qb or frankly a ton of other qb related talking points are immaterial.

ATL just picked Ridder and it didn’t work. Instead of paying a guy who has 1. Never won anything and 2. Might actually be a big reason why his teams have never won anything, ATL should be looking to take a swing at a good qb who for three to four years of play will be cheaper than one season of Cousins.

        • Troy

ya i mean, i’m not arguing that you SHOULD pay a top 8-10 QB top QB money, certainly it would be very difficult to win a super bowl doing that.

i agree with rob that there are probably only 4-5 QBs worth top money (mahomes/burrow/allen/jackson), and if you don’t have a truly top QB you are better off drafting and going with a rookie salary.

        • Troy

basically i just took issue with calling him serviceable, thats really not fair to him imo. he is a top 10 qb, firmly good not great territory.

          • Hand of God

which for me is a serviceable QB…i would agree with you, i think. He is no star, but not bottom of the pyramid. Now, from Atlanta’s perspective this is a good move – they have build up a solid team, and they needed a QB to unleash the potential….now they have one. And its a great move for Cousins, he makes great money and goes to a place where if things align well he might be well positioned for a nice run. As of march 11 2024, this looks like a win-win for both parts, frankly

    • Big Mike

Which is why he’s made way more than Rodgers (not counting commercials of course). But yeah, hats off to you Kirk.

Never did make sense that they would be a Fields destination with Getsy as OC

Compensation update: The #Raiders are signing QB Gardner Minshew to a two-year, $25 million deal that includes $15M fully guaranteed, per sources.

Bet you a ham sandwich he outperforms Baker Mayfield next year.

    • cha

      Just FYI…

Geno Smith has 2y, $27.5 with $12.7m fully guaranteed, plus a $10m roster bonus left on his contract.

      • Thomas

I saw that. Makes me think Lock will be relatively expensive.

  74. Patrick Toler

Outside of McKinnley, the safeties are all going for about 7m per year. It doesn’t feel like any of the other safeties (outside of Simmons maybe?) will top that.

BREAKING: Free agent TE Will Dissly plans to sign with the #Chargers on a 3-year, $14M deal with $10M fully guaranteed, sources tell @BleacherReport.

Dissly caught 13 TDs in six seasons with the #Seahawks.

    • Brodie

Who had Noah Fant as the last Seattle TE to get a contract on their Bingo card?

      • cha

Parkinson has huge length and has improved as a blocker and they’re buying his prime years for a reasonable number.

Dissly fits exactly what the Chargers want. A sturdy blocker and a guy who can run a route and surprise you.

Fant had the worst season of his NFL career and is probably trying to get more than he can. He might have to take a one-year flyer and reestablish value.

        • STTBM

I’m bummed about Parkinson. We wasted him in Seattle. He’s fast and his best years are going to be as a Ram. Bleach!

Happy for him though: playing in LA with a great coach will maximize his skills, make him more money, and be more fun.

And it’s not grey all the time there. Unless you count Smog…

        • geoff u

Dissly will be a good Harbaugh guy*

          *provided he can stay healthy

    • Troy

another hawks TE gets signed, well that makes our TE situation pretty interesting now…hello Brock Bowers!

      • Gritty Hawk

Mike Gesicki, Hayden Hurst, Ben Sinnott. Let’s get it done!

      • Henry Taylor

If Brock Bowers is there, sure go for it. But I’m otherwise quite content having a mid TE room for a year.

After seeing some of these LB deals, I’d prefer us to draft Junior Colson in round 1 then give Jordyn Brooks $10-15 million annually.

    • STTBM

There’s no way I want to pay Brooks that. The guy just isn’t very bright. He’s never gonna be a student of the game/field General like Wags. And that impacts his play: he’s not as good when he’s the guy making the defensive calls.

He’s worth less than Luvu to me, by a good margin. But other teams might not see it that way.

      • Nick

A great “coverage” LB who has approximately….1 interception in 4 seasons. Give me a break. And oh, he has two FF in 4 years, too.

        • STTBM

Luvu also has 12.5 sacks the last two years, and he is better in coverage than Brooks.

Brooks had his best year last year, and he still isn’t great.

          • Nick

One of my main measuring stick for this offseason’s success is whether we pay Brooks big. Seems like a real fork-in-the-road moment

          • STTBM

Brooks has 1 int in 4 years, 2 forced fumbles, 5.5 sacks the last two years, and less tackles.

Any way you look at it, he’s not that good.

            • Rob Staton

Neither was Patrick Queen until he started working with Mike Macdonald

    • Chris 206

Did you mean “than” rather than “then”?

Couldn’t tell if you and STTBM were agreeing or disagreeing …

      • Nick

Oops. Excuse me. I’m saying that Brooks should not be paid that much imo.

  79. Nick

Could Isaiah Simmons be the Kyle Hamilton-esque player MM would like in Seattle?

    • ukalex6674

Simmons was very highly regarded in here by most when in his draft season.

      • Nick

I know! I loved him coming out.

Could be a very exciting addition to his defense (which apparently loves flexibility).

        Makes a lot of sense.

  80. Sandman

Hoping a few more top Seahawk FAs get a day one deal. Surprised CP and Uncle Will signed before Fant. Big Cat, Brooks and Lewis getting no luv but their comps getting big paper.

  81. Mike B

I just reviewed the current Seahawks roster on Over the Cap–yikes. I don’t care whom the Hawks draft this year, or which free agents they bring in…this team will not be very competitive in 2024. Seven, maybe eight wins? I’m fine with that provided they build for 2025 and beyond, but 2024 is gonna be rough.

Specifically, the Giants are sending the 39th overall pick, along with the 2015 fifth-rounder to Carolina, for Brian Burns. New York still has the 47th pick, which it landed from Seattle in the Leonard Williams trade.

Getting paid like a top 10 non-pass rush linebacker? no thanks.

      • HOUSE

I think fair value for Brooks would’ve been around $7M/yr

  91. HOUSE

Noah Fant returning to SEA on a 2yr/$21M deal.

Kind of feels like an overpay to me, but I’m good with it being only two years

  92. Troy D

It probably is a slight overpay but it keeps our main weapons all here for Grubb to work with and lessens the needs a bit in the draft. Wouldnt be surprised to see a FA later on in the offseason for depth. Maybe can go undrafted for a 3rd TE and have your TE room cost not too much more than Fant.

If we arent going QB in R1 , I want us going for the trenches all draft long.

  93. Troy D

Big Cat is back. There we go. now we are talking

  94. Coach

Seems like a pretty steep price, but he was rated #69 on the top 101 free agents on nfl.com so I guess it isn’t too bad compared to the deals that Parkinson and Dissly got. I think Fant has more upside as a blocker and receiver than they do.

Corbin Smith just reported that we resigned Leonard Williams for 3 years at $21 million per year!

    Go Hawks!
